In Caste War Now and Never scholar S. B. West considers Yucatan's nineteenth-century Caste War, the longest and most violent Indigenous uprising of the Western Hemisphere, to argue that it actually never occurred.

Instead, West writes that the violent events grouped under the "Caste War" label must be understood through alternative frameworks that resist the emergent logics of race war and include related regulatory matrices like gender and land. Through this lens, the Caste War emerges as a discursive construct rooted in an anti-Indigenous archive that served the political interests of a frustrated regional elite during the rise of liberalism and nationhood. West argues that Caste War discourse unfolds as a technology that mobilized and legitimized genocidal actions against racialized rebels and inspired assimilation into hegemonic political and social structures.

In the second half of the book, West looks at the Caste War to engage its contemporary polysemic nature through close readings of Yucatec Maya texts, stories, and other forms of knowledge production. These sources reframe the Caste War as an important part of a framework of resistance that defies colonial time and reclaims narrative control of its events.

Caste War Now and Never captures how Maya communities understand the conflict as ongoing and demonstrates that although the Caste War never occurred as such, it continues to endure presently.

Poster Propaganda in Soviet Uzbekistan explores how revolutionary politics and the socialist future were visualised in Uzbekistan during the first two decades of Soviet power. The first book-length study to place visual propaganda at the centre of Soviet Central Asian history, it examines how the Soviet state used images to mobilise the population, remake society, and reshape human consciousness itself. In doing so, it reveals how the Bolsheviks reckoned with the ethnic, cultural, and colonial complexities of the vast territories they inherited from the crumbling Russian Empire. Through a richly researched analysis of propaganda posters, the book rethinks communist visual culture alongside the political tumult of nation-building, revolutionary internationalism, and colonial legacies in Uzbekistan in the 1920s and 30s. Drawing on extensive archival research and the period's vibrant Uzbek- and Russian-language periodical press, the book demonstrates how local and national concerns intersected with policies and new cultural norms emanating from Moscow. The politics of representation became a site of intense debate among indigenous intellectuals, European artists, Bolshevik ideologues, and propaganda theorists, all of whom contested who should depict the new Soviet Uzbekistan, how, and what effects such images should have on ordinary viewers. These debates illuminate both the ambitions and the limits of revolutionary imagination in the formative decades of Soviet power. By examining Soviet theories of spectatorship alongside the everyday visual environments experienced by Soviet Uzbeks, the book reveals how the Soviet propaganda system functioned in both theory and practice.

Hedging, not balancing or bandwagoning, is the modal behavior of the non-great powers under uncertainty. Despite its prevalence as a state alignment choice, hedging has remained an undertheorized subject in the study of international relations. This Element presents one of the first theoretical works on strategic hedging in world politics. Tracing the multidisciplinary roots of hedging as an instinctive human behavior, I contend that sovereign actors hedge in ways similar to commodity traders, farmers, fund managers, academic writers, politicians, and individuals in competitive organizations under conditions of high-stakes and high-uncertainties. I then develop a two-level theoretical framework to explain when, how and why states hedge, rather than balance or bandwagon. Using selected Indo-Pacific countries as empirical cases, I conclude that while structural-level conditions largely explain the shifts in alignment decisions (e.g., from non-hedging to hedging, or vice versa), domestic factors explain the variations in hedging choices.

This book traces the shifting contours of caste and agrarian inequality, revealing how older hierarchies are being reconfigured in new forms and how they impact democracy. It offers a compelling ethnographic account of how democratic mechanisms-including political participation, elections, and protest movements-actually function in rural India. Focusing on Indian Punjab, it reveals the often stark disconnect between formal democratic ideals and ground-level realities. Engaging with major debates on clientelism, identity politics, and the criminalisation of politics, the book sheds light on the complexities of political representation and accountability. The book also fills a critical gap in the political anthropology of Indian Punjab, offering valuable insights into the region's current political discontent. This title is also available as open access on Cambridge Core.

Belize is often described as a "pristine" ecotourism destination with a landscape that is "naturally" valuable. Yet for much of the twentieth century, British Honduras-as the country was known under colonial rule-was seen as lacking value, an unprofitable backwater. Valuing Nature at the Ends of the World explores how Belize's precarious coastal environment has become a site for a new kind of capitalist value production, in which landscapes and ecosystems derive worth from their vulnerability or looming destruction in the era of climate change.

Drawing on a decade of ethnographic research, Patrick M. Gallagher offers a critical account of market-oriented conservation in the Caribbean that ranges across everyday coastal life, emergent ecological science, and climate policy spaces. He shows how the long material and social histories of racialized colonialism shape the making of technocratic tools for valuing nature. Gallagher traces how new forms of capitalist value emerge from the interaction among colonial pasts, contemporary conservation practices, and vivid scenarios of imminent climate change-driven disaster and loss. He also examines how people and policymakers in Belize imagine and create new ways of life in a changing environment. Ethnographically grounded and rich in theoretical insight, this book illuminates how the Anthropocene environment, newly visible and valuable at the moment of its presumed disappearance, came into being in Belize and around the world.

This book offers a theoretical and empirical explanation of the intersection of border, diplomacy, and security, with particular emphasis on the border policies and practices of Nigeria and South Africa in the context of border enforcement, cross-border concessions and agreements, visa regimes, migration control, and refugee policies. Primarily focusing on physical frontiers, particularly borderlands, the author draws on the African realist assumption of African international relations and the lived experience of state and non-state actors to explain the divergence and convergence in the border and security practices of the two states, emphasising African agency and experiential realities in the understanding and framing of the continent's experience. The book also examines the limitations to the effectiveness of the two states' border practices and how such factors impact not only their security landscapes but also the regional 'borderless Africa' agenda in the context of the AfCFTA and the continental-wide Free Movement Protocol.

This volume brings together a diverse group of Australian scholars who offer a range of perspectives on Australian identity and "being Australian" through the lens of food. It addresses the complex nature of Australia's always-evolving culinary landscape where multiculturalism and enduring Indigenous foodways are entangled with settler-colonial legacies. How has Australian food culture been shaped by the way Australians see themselves and by their cultural assumptions and aspirations in an increasingly globalised world? What role do foods from Indigenous and immigrants' cuisines play in Australian culinary identity - how have they been acclimatized and acculturated, interpreted or adapted, adopted and at times co-opted in Australian and global contexts? And how do Aboriginal Australians and immigrants assert their senses of identity through food?

Through its multidisciplinary approach to these and other contemporary debates around food and identity in Australia from both non-Indigenous and Aboriginal scholars, this book makes a unique contribution to the literature on food and food culture in Australia.

From the forging of a constitution for the postindependence republic to the reign of Narendra Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party today, the idea of India as a nation-state has predominated. Yet the country encompasses a vast diversity of communities, regions, languages, and cultures, calling into question any unitary identity.

In this magisterial account of Indian politics over the past seventy-five years, the renowned scholar Partha Chatterjee challenges common notions of "state" and "nation," arguing for a more capacious understanding of "the people." He examines the varying trajectories of the Indian nation-state, as opposed to what he calls the "people-nation," analyzing the complex connections between the two. Chatterjee offers a persuasive political-economic analysis of the transition from the time of developmental planning to the present era of capitalist dominance. He combines keen analysis of changing caste-class-gender formations in the country's diverse regions with a close examination of the uneven spread of India's capitalist economy.

By looking beyond the nation-state, this book unveils many hidden aspects of Indian politics today-and makes a powerful case for a future in which the federal system respects the equal worth of each part of the country.

While ethnic voting is usually linked with stable voting patterns, Indian elections are notoriously fragmented and difficult to predict. The Reciprocity Trap argues that the instability of Indian elections can largely be attributed to the weakness and mobilizational strategy of political parties, which leads to the under-mobilization of the poor. Using an impressive array of data, ranging from geo-coded polling station data to elite interviews, Pradeep Chhibber and Francesca Jensenius show how the poor are more likely to shift their allegiance between elections, to "waste" their vote on unviable contenders, and less likely to participate in all forms of political activities. This groundbreaking work reintegrates class and economic status into the study of South Asian politics, which has long been dominated by discussions of identity politics, showing that while identity groups may provide a stable source of support for parties, the volatile choices of the under-mobilized poor ultimately determine who wins elections. This title is also available as Open Access on Cambridge Core.

In the last four decades Latin America has experienced one of the fastest growing higher education sectors in the world. 25 million students are currently enrolled in more than 3,800 universities. As a result, higher education in the region has had to respond to growing demands for access, pressures for quality and sustainable financing, institutional diversification and internationalization, while simultaneously facing technological disruptions and governance challenges that require new leadership and management approaches.

In light of these developments, this book addresses various aspects of higher education policy in Mexico. It offers a comprehensive view of the challenges universities currently face, the organizational models that have emerged to respond to them, and policy solutions for strengthening them further. In doing so, the book offers a valuable contribution for the study and understanding of universities in the region and beyond. It is an indispensable tool for researchers in public policy and education policy, as well as policymakers and institutional administrators.

This edited book establishes a justice-oriented agenda for understanding and acting on disasters in the world's most hazard-exposed regions. Challenging technocratic and event-centred framings, the volume theorises disasters as historically produced and politically mediated, tracing how colonialism, capitalism, extractivism, and uneven governance create and compound risk. Across four parts-foundations; (re)conceptualising disasters; methods; and critical voices from the field-the chapters develop key ideas such as critical vulnerability, structural/prospective amnesia, and disaster populism; advance plural, decolonising methodologies (including talanoa, autoethnography and co-production of knowledge); and offer grounded cases from Aotearoa New Zealand, Japan, the Philippines, Rapa Nui, Chile, Vietnam and the Pacific. In doing so, Critical Disaster Studies in Asia and the Pacific centres Indigenous and local epistemologies, Gender Equality, Disability, and Social Inclusion (GEDSI)-informed practice, and systems-behaviour models for transformative disaster risk reduction. Bringing together leading and emerging scholars across disciplines, this is an indispensable resource for researchers, practitioners and policymakers seeking to move from managing hazards to transforming the conditions that generate disaster risk.

Rammohun Roy (1774-1833) has been variously celebrated-or critiqued-as the 'Father of Modern India', 'the Erasmus of India', the first embodiment of the Bengal Renaissance under British rule, or, indeed, as the first modern Indian intellectual whose dilemmas revealed (to later analysts) the constraints of a colonial formation of politics and economy. He agitated for the freedom of the press, argued against the practice of sati, fought for the Hindu widow's right to inherit property, founded a religious organisation (the Brahmo Samaj) based on Unitarian principles, and gave evidence on Indian issues to the British parliament in 1831. He has been acknowledged as one of the progenitors of modern Bengali prose. His international reputation was unprecedented - much admired in America, he was feted in Britain and France, and the Spanish Constitution of Cadiz was dedicated to him. The Cambridge Companion to Rammohun Roy offers a revaluation of Rammohun's life and work through fresh readings of his life and legacy. It also aims to present a global connected history of modern thought in the early nineteenth century, prioritising local sources in both the English press and Bengali-language publications that were so far unexplored.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is described as the basis of a "fourth industrial revolution" with profound effects to science, industry, and various aspects of society. Rooted in philosophical and technological developments dating back to ancient times in both the West and China, AI has emerged as a powerful force transforming basic relations between humankind and machines.

Historical Dictionary of Artificial Intelligence in China gives special attention to the individual scientists and entrepreneurs in the West and China responsible for major developments and advances of AI technology along with developments in ancillary fields such as science fiction and films that influence elite and popular opinion on the frequently opaque world of AI. This is done through a chronology, an introductory essay, cross-referenced dictionary entries, a glossary, appendix and an extensive bibliography.

≫First caller, good morning≪ ? this is how a famous radio show in Benin begins. Callers can express their concerns on almost any topic of public life, if they do so precisely and politely. These programs are called grogne, and listeners can denounce grievances. Grogne programs are media dramas with typical rhetoric and interaction rituals. The most frequent callers to these programs, the grogneurs, have become committed media activists. Tilo Graetz examines their topics, motives, strategies, and public position. Based on field research, he offers scholars of African Studies new understandings of media change in West Africa, and provides non-specialists with comprehensible insights into vibrant debates in this region of the continent.

A lively, accessible introduction to the asymmetrical relationship between the United States and Mexico, one of the most formative international relationships in geopolitics today.

The border between the US and Mexico is the world's longest between a wealthy industrialized nation and a part of the Global South. The economy, society, culture, and politics of the two nations have become inextricably linked.

As the United States continues to assert its considerable geopolitical power, this book reminds us that this trend runs deep in the country's history, starting with its closest neighbors. Buchenau explores US territorial expansion, the Mexican Revolution of 1910, disputes over agricultural and mineral wealth, and the migration of Mexican laborers. Despite that massive power imbalance, Buchenau shows us that Mexico's influence on the United States is just as significant as the inverse.

This book presents a critical examination of Carl Schmitt's political framework, particularly in the context of decisionist regimes in the Middle East. Departing from conventional discussions on Schmitt, it challenges the perceived stability and power promised by the 'friend-enemy' dichotomy, revealing the inherent chaos and dysfunction beneath the decisionist facade. By contextualizing Schmitt's ideas within the complex political landscape of the Middle East, it sheds light on the region's regimes, hitherto unexplored through a Schmittian lens. Distinctive in its approach, the book reframes Schmitt's theoretical contributions, diverging from normative assessments and legal dichotomies to explore the functionality of his proposed political alternative. Through an interdisciplinary lens that integrates discussions of sectarianization, coup-proofing, and neopatrimonialism, it unveils the broader implications of decisionist practices, transcending conventional elite-centric power analyses. Offering a unique dual contribution to the literature, this book presents a fresh critique of Schmitt's ideology, challenging its efficacy in ensuring long-term regime stability. Moreover, by applying a Schmittian perspective to the Middle Eastern context, it not only recontextualizes Schmitt's concepts but also prompts new inquiries into the region's political stability, marking a significant advancement in the understanding of decisionism and governance dynamics in the Middle East.

Approaches the history of the Mughal Empire at the level of human experience, through a diverse group of autobiographical narratives.

Starting from 1526, the Mughals ruled over much of India for three centuries, perhaps the most important Islamic empire in the early modern world. This period saw the production of a fascinating variety of memoirs and autobiographies in which residents of the empire reflected on their own lives, on Islam in a Hindu context, and on the relationship of individual subjects to their new rulers. Those written by Mughal royalty-especially Babur and Jahangir-are well known. This book considers the less well-known writings of diverse others, from the poet laureate Faizi to those who were not part of elite society but a few notches below it, such as the lowly envoy Asad Beg and characters like Mirza Nathan and Abdul Latif, who lived dangerously on the Bengal frontier. Also considered are prolific Hindu writers, such as Bhimsen Saksena and the witty Anand Ram Mukhlis, who lived in Delhi through the turbulent 1730s and 1740s. Together, they offer an original and differently critical perspective on the empire-its religious, social, and political tensions, as well as its strategies for overcoming them.

Covering over two centuries of such materials, Mirrors of Empire is a work of cultural history that is also firmly rooted in social history. It incorporates extensive translations from Persian, including materials that are little-known even to historians and specialists, and shows the transformation of the empire from its difficult emergence, to its expansive height, to its phase of disintegration in the middle of the eighteenth century. Gracefully written, the book approaches the Mughal Empire at the level of human experience, rendering it accessible and not a mere abstraction.

This book provides a comparative and up-to-date account of the recent Labour governments in Australia, New Zealand, and the UK. Focussing on the cases of the Albanese government in Australia, the Starmer government in the UK and the Ardern government in New Zealand, it offers an important and concise account of how the centre-left is finding new political pathways in the twenty-first century. The book focuses on a three key policy areas - including political economy, welfare policy, and industrial relations, with a critical review of the relationship with the trade unions. It concludes by exploring the ideological trajectory of these centre-left parties, and considers how the politics of 'labourism' is transforming. It will appeal to all those interested in public policy and party politics.

This book analyzes how Japan, Taiwan, South Korea, and China achieved rapid economic development through public policies and technological innovation in East Asia. The work examines the fundamental role of the state and industrial strategies in the process of technological catching-up in these economies. Throughout its chapters, the author explores the historical foundations and economic policies of each country under global geopolitical pressures. The book begins with two chapters addressing the economic rise of East Asia and the main heterodox developmental literatures, followed by four chapters discussing these specific experiences (Japanese, Taiwanese, South Korean, and Chinese), and finally, a comparative conclusion. Finally, the analysis focuses on the role of state-owned enterprises, government planning, and technical bureaucracies in sustaining growth. Written in clear and accessible language, this book is essential for researchers, students, and anyone interested in understanding the role of the state and the lessons of Asian development for the contemporary global landscape.

This extraordinary memoir by Concha Lombardo de Miramon is the only known autobiography written by a nineteenth-century Mexican woman. In it she recounts her life from her birth in Mexico City to the beginning of her long European exile following her husband's execution for supporting Maximilian, the ill-fated Austrian prince who established an empire in Mexico. Now available for the first time in English, translated and edited by Silvia Marina Arrom, it offers rich insight into Mexico's past from a female perspective. Concha provides not only eyewitness accounts of Mexico's bitter civil wars and leading political figures, but also lively anecdotes of daily life that both confirm and question stereotypes about women and gender. Readers will enjoy, and relate to, her accounts of family secrets, childhood mischief, possessive boyfriends, marital spats, practical jokes, daring escapades, and, finally, a love story that ends in tragedy.

This element offers a fresh and distinctive viewpoint on the historical-archaeology of monarchic Israel during the Iron Age (ca. 1000-720 BCE). It provides an easy-to-read archaeological overview of main finds from key sites in the northern parts of the southern Levant, which opens the door to beginners as well as to experts into the world of biblical archaeology. It further discusses methodological questions pertaining to the identification of political entities in the archaeological record, and the ways in which material remains and textual sources interact. This book does not presuppose Israel as a well-defined and long-lasting political entity but aims to uncover its underlying social and political hierarchies and interactions, thus portraying a more nuanced image of monarchic Israel: the communities from which it consisted, the socio-political infrastructure that facilitated its emergence and maintenance, and the ways in which political hegemony was exercised within it.

Since 2015, China has actively promoted "third-party market cooperation" as a new model of international economic engagement. This approach brings together China, advanced economies, and beneficiary countries to jointly develop infrastructure and construction projects, moving beyond traditional bilateral cooperation framework. Official narratives portray tripartite cooperation as a "triple-win" arrangement that combines China's manufacturing capacity, partner countries' advanced technologies, and the development needs of beneficiary countries. While such cooperation promises risk-sharing, resource complementarity, and enhanced project quality, it also introduces new challenges, including higher transaction costs, divergent governance practices, and complex negotiations among multiple actors.

Addressing the central question of why stakeholders choose tripartite cooperation and how three-party collaboration shapes project outcomes, the book makes both theoretical and practical contributions. It integrates transaction cost theory, international relations theory, foreign direct investment theory, and infrastructure natural monopoly theory to advance a novel concept of "semi-internalisation." The analysis provides policymakers, practitioners, and scholars with a framework to understand partner selection, interest alignment, and the evolving dynamics of one of China's significant yet understudied innovations in global economic cooperation

The Oxford Handbook of Social Policies in the Global South offers a comprehensive set of contributions assessing the current state of research on social policies and institutions in place outside the advanced capitalist countries. They are written by researchers with a deep knowledge of developments in the Global South. Collectively, the contributions consider three main research questions: What are the main social policies and institutions in place in the Global South? What explains their current level of development and future dynamics? And what are the outstanding factors influencing social policies in the Global South? The chapters were commissioned and written with the express purpose of offering an overview of research on social policies at the regional level and at the national level in countries with large populations, covering research in all developing regions. This is an ambitious goal given the number of countries to be included and their diversity. The volume opens with a set of global overview papers aimed at providing a window into current research on the main factors influencing social policies in the Global South and the main actors shaping them. The Oxford Handbook of Social Policies in the Global South is the first to offer a comprehensive and critical overview of social policies in the Global South.

A remarkable transformation is taking place in the Middle East. As old ideologies from nationalism to fundamentalism falter, many people are embracing a new vision grounded in secularism, gender equality, and individual freedom. Cracks in Tradition is a bold, data-driven account of the rise of liberal values in the Middle East, revealing the depth and breadth of a movement with the potential to change the course of world politics.

Drawing on more than 70,000 face-to-face interviews and in-depth qualitative insights from Egypt and Tunisia, Mansoor Moaddel rigorously analyzes real-world attitudes and trends. He provides a nuanced portrait of a region in flux, where liberal ideas are gaining strength despite the enduring power of fundamentalism and authoritarianism. Challenging entrenched assumptions and longstanding biases, Moaddel demonstrates that liberalism has emerged organically from within Middle Eastern societies, driven by local social, cultural, and historical dynamics. His groundbreaking model of ideological change shows how key domains of social life-governance, gender, and personal autonomy-are being reshaped by new systems of meaning, spurring the spread of liberal values. Provocatively argued and empirically rich, Cracks in Tradition provides a fresh, optimistic perspective on the future of the Middle East and global democracy.

This study examines the intersection of media, politics, and public discourse in Uganda, tracing historical trajectories from colonial print cultures to contemporary digital activism. It adopts a qualitative approach grounded in mediatization theories, arguing that Uganda's media system operates as a field of negotiated hegemony where power and resistance coexist. Across twelve chapters, the book explores print, broadcast, digital, religious, and gendered mediations of political life, revealing how communication practices construct, sustain, and challenge state authority. The findings underscore that media in Uganda is not merely a reflection of society but a central arena where citizenship, identity, and legitimacy are continually performed and contested.
