Threads of Meaning focuses on the extraordinary imagery of gilded eagles, griffins, and archers in roundels across multiple media to reveal how imported figural silks from the Islamic world and Byzantium saturated ritual, politics, and art in thirteenth-century England.

Drawing on royal and ecclesiastical inventories, chronicles, and surviving objects, Amanda Luyster reconstructs a vastly enlarged corpus of figural woven silks imported into England: about forty extant textiles and some two hundred more recorded in local collections. Silks are highlighted at moments of intense meaning such as Frederick II's peacock and eagle cloths gifted to Henry III and Piers Gaveston's provocative purple and pearls. Threads of Meaning illustrates not only how elites understood textiles through Byzantine imperial codes, but also how these motifs moved across media including tiles, sculpture, and wall paintings, extending silk's authority through English art. In doing so, Luyster offers a new visual history in which imported silks, and the English objects they inspired, suggested sanctity, sovereignty, network connections, and military victory. Richly illustrated and archivally grounded, Threads of Meaning reframes Gothic England within global exchange.

In the 7th and 8th centuries, numerous new cities were founded in what is now Iraq, often in the vicinity of existing settlements. The international conference, whose contributions are presented here, examined this phenomenon and the accompanying processes of transformation, using the case study of al-Hira as a starting point. The volume combines source-based contributions on the history of events and historical topography with the presentation and analysis of the results of settlement archaeological investigations and excavations that have been carried out in the area of historic al-Hira since 2015. Supplementary papers use comparisons to place the case study of al-Hira in a supra-regional context.

A nuanced and authoritative account of what constitutes antisemitism-and when criticizing Israel or supporting Palestine becomes antisemitic

Since the October 7, 2023, attack by Hamas on Israel and Israel's ensuing war in Gaza, difficult questions about when criticism of Israel or support for Palestine becomes antisemitic have moved to the center of public life and political debate. Amid growing antisemitism and fierce disagreement over what is or isn't antisemitic, what is needed now more than ever is a clearer and more sophisticated understanding of antisemitism and how it relates to Israel-Palestine. In The Question of Antisemitism, Dov Waxman provides precisely that, presenting an authoritative guide to today's contentious debates about antisemitism, anti-Zionism, and Israel-Palestine.

The Question of Antisemitism argues that antisemitism has become so contested today primarily because it has become inextricably entangled with the highly charged and polarizing issue of Israel-Palestine. Written in an engaging and accessible way, the book explains what antisemitism is and how it manifests; explores the relationship between anti-Zionism and antisemitism; unpacks the controversy surrounding the "IHRA definition of antisemitism"; assesses claims of a "new antisemitism" aimed at Israel; and investigates whether the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement targeting Israel is antisemitic. The book also challenges claims that antisemitism is rampant on U.S. college campuses, and it documents the serious and far-reaching harms caused by the growing abuse of antisemitism accusations.

Providing essential answers to the most difficult questions regarding antisemitism today, The Question of Antisemitism offers a deeper understanding of one of the most important and divisive issues of our time.

This book examines how various Australians understood or expressed their experience of the Great War and early war commemoration in transcendent terms, and in so doing contributed to the creation of an Australian foundation myth, Anzac. The significant breadth and depth of religious or transcendent experience for some Australian Great War servicemen challenges longstanding historical accounts of soldiers-world-wide-as secular in outlook or unconcerned with or with no experience of religious or transcendent (sublime or numinous) experience. The book adopts an empirical approach to historical sources (letters, diary entries, verse),? ?while drawing on insights and methodologies from historical biography, micro-history and comparative studies in myth, religion and phenomenology, and in particular, those of philosopher and historian of religion, Rudolf Otto. It is an interdisciplinary study grounded in deep archival research which breaks new ground in the field.

An underwater look at Sydney that surfaces new and unfamiliar histories of people, objects, spaces, and environmental and social change.

The Underharbor places the ocean at the center of a cultural history of Sydney, Australia, a place built on and around seawater, where the community is linked historically, emotionally, and psychologically to the water. Drawing on a series of vignettes that focus on Sydney's underwater dimensions-including the harbor's relationship to technological modernity, Indigenous ideas and practices, artistic experimentation, and scientific inquiry-Ann Elias creates a unique portrait of a city and its past. By shifting the terrestrial perspective to the subaquatic, Elias uncovers an area filled with political meaning, poetic significance, and ideological struggles.

Few harbors are as researched as Sydney's, where fishing, exploration, colonialism, warfare, science, and industry all shaped cultural ideas about underwater space. Between 1850 to 1950, only a few groups of people had access to the remote underharbor: Indigenous divers and First Nations peoples, who were dispossessed by colonizers; divers working primarily to further the maritime industrialization of the growing city and to salvage objects from the harbor floor; researchers in the emerging field of marine science who dove for first-hand observation; and beachcombers, naturalists, and dredgers who got to know the underharbor by bringing it to the surface. Through press stories, models, illustrations, maps, and photographic and cinematic representations, The Underharbor reveals how these watery visions of Sydney shifted over the course of a century.

An eye-opening anthropological examination of masculinity, violence, and transnational migration focused on present-day Punjab.

In Coming of Age in Macholand, the anthropologist and filmmaker Harjant S. Gill shows how Punjabi men in India, disillusioned by promises for power and control, contend with patriarchy: by submitting to it, attempting to transgress it, migrating to escape it, and coming undone by it. Gill takes readers deep inside men's worlds to show how boys come of age and masculinity is produced through pervasive violence, while it is also underlined with intimacy in the form of fraternal love and homosocial bonds.

Based on four years of fieldwork carried out over a decade and hundreds of interviews, Gill explores how boys learn to become men against the backdrop of patriarchal constraints, political violence, changing agrarian economies, and outward migration. He also shows the great extent to which violence is a function and a reflection of powerlessness. By exploring the development of masculinity in a society where sexuality is sanctioned exclusively through heteronormative frameworks of marriage and family, this book documents how patriarchy forecloses sexual agency and emotional autonomy. Ultimately, it offers an indictment of patriarchy as a system that not only oppresses women but also constricts men's intimate and sexual choices.

A multifaceted cultural history of pilgrimage and travel to the Holy Land from the Middle Ages to the dawn of the twentieth century

For countless pilgrims throughout history, the Holy Land was a destination unlike any other. Travelling there could free you of your sins, get you knighted or offer hope of being cured of illness. Above all, it brought you closer to the mystery surrounding places laden with religious meaning. But for Christians in particular, the journey was often very different from what they expected and the gap between expectation and reality plunged more than a few into deep crisis. They Came to the Holy Land tells the remarkable stories of those who undertook this taxing and often dangerous trip to Palestine.

Drawing on travel writings spanning the medieval era to the end of the Ottoman Empire, many newly translated and presented in English for the first time, Bernd Brunner reveals how the Holy Land was a place of both fulfillment and disappointment for Jews, Muslims and Christians who were drawn there by religious fervour, the thirst for knowledge or misinformation. We meet a host of fascinating characters, from German Templers and American missionaries to Zionist visionaries, Indigenous dragomans, scientists, aristocrats and pilgrims journeying alone. What they all had in common was a destination whose peoples, cultures and arid landscape often proved a source of profound disillusionment.

Historically insightful and richly told, They Came to the Holy Land brings to life the experiences of swashbucklers, true believers and border crossers of every kind, offering a vivid portrait of how the Holy Land was imagined, misunderstood and rediscovered over the centuries.

Across Africa, power structures from colonial legacies to modern social hierarchies create and sustain exclusion. Exploring the individuals and groups living on the periphery of African society, this book situates Africa's marginalized identities as catalysts for social transformation. Toyin Falola examines a diverse range of identities, including persons with albinism, LGBTQI+ communities, refugees, rural dwellers, and women in seclusion. By analyzing these groups not as passive victims but as active agents of change, the book reveals how their unique perspectives and resistance movements are reshaping the continent's future. Blending sociology, history, and political science, Falola challenges prevailing norms and advocates for a more inclusive, pluralistic Africa. Marginalized Identities in Africa is an essential resource for anyone seeking to understand the intersection of identity, human rights, and social transformation in one of the world's most dynamic regions.

Vagrants and Outcasts examines the Chinese working-class in the nineteenth-century Philippines, detailing how a core class in the colonial economy became categorized as social undesirables-vagrants, insolvents, beggars, pickpockets, drunkards, homeless, idlers and unemployed individuals-who threatened the Spanish colony's political and financial stability. In a collective history reconstructed from more than 5,000 criminal cases culled from Philippine and Spanish archives, Jely A. Galang reveals how particular state policies contributed to the precarious condition of Chinese workers. The Spanish colonial state utilized the law, police, court system, and punitive measures to define, control, and sentence putative offenders. These workers-turned-offenders, on the other hand, creatively employed various covert and overt ways to circumvent the state's judicial apparatus. Vagrants and Outcasts offers a new perspective on individuals whose lives are rarely revealed in the historical narrative. It also engages in wider debates concerning how vast populations of social outcasts in the past were created, defined, ostracized, criminalized, and subsequently punished by those in authority because of their insecure condition of unemployment, material deprivation, and sinking status.

Flying Brothers drops you into cockpits and crisis rooms across the Cold War: supersonic F-5s herding rebel "Tora-Toras" over Manila in 1989, F-86 Sabres firing the first Sidewinder missiles against MiG-17s above the Taiwan Strait in 1958, and AT-6s striking a mutinous warship on a river in downtown Bangkok in 1951.

Instead of retelling Vietnam, Flying Brothers follows America's three treaty allies in Southeast Asia - Taiwan, Thailand, and the Philippines - showing how they built airpower that actually worked. The deal was stark: trade territory for technology. By hosting US bases, these countries gained jets, radar, and training they couldn't otherwise afford - while wrestling with the sovereignty headaches that came with a foreign force on their soil.

At the heart of the story are "diplomats in flight suits": American advisors flying, fixing, and planning alongside their counterparts to turn hand-me-down aircraft into credible defenses and hard-won victories-from the Philippines' air-ground campaign against the Huks to Taiwan's measured, missile-age deterrence. Along the way, Daniel Jackson highlights dogfights, ramp-side ingenuity, and the annual "Flying Brothers" weapons meets that forged real fraternity among allied airmen.

For readers of military and aviation history, Cold War strategy, and Southeast Asia, this is a fast-moving, clear-eyed account of how alliances actually fight: not with speeches, but with checklists, radar tracks, and pilots who know when to hold fire - and when to press the attack. The result is a persuasive case that well-run advisory missions, tied to coherent political-military aims, can succeed at far lower cost than direct US intervention.

In Cultivating Power, Luthfi Adam delves into the history of the Buitenzorg Botanic Garden in Java, the center of world tropical research over the long nineteenth century. Buitenzorg took shape through the entanglement of forest and mountain ecologies, plant collection, laboratory practices, and skilled labor, as global scientific inquiry and colonial economic ambitions developed through one another. As Adam demonstrates, botany was never a neutral subject of study in the Dutch East Indies. Botanical theories, field excursions, and experiment stations helped colonial officials push cultivation into new terrains. Plant geography identified local altitude and microclimates as providing suitable conditions for introducing highland crops such as tea and cinchona. Darwinian experimental botany shaped efforts to understand disease and protect plantation economies. Cultivating Power shows empire as a spatial project that moved along a vertical axis, from coastal lowlands into upland forests, where land, labor, science, crops, and capital could be organized for extraction. At Buitenzorg, colonial botany cultivated power by extending the empire's capacity to grow crops and extend scientific and administrative authority across lowland and highland terrains.

This book brings critical ideas from interdisciplinary scholars, analytically examines digital technologies and social innovation across various issues, including governance, education, rural transformation, AI ethics, citizen science and other political, cultural, institutional, and ethical domains in Indonesia. It underscores the need to foster inclusive practices that engage diverse populations, and it encourages collaboration among multiple stakeholders-communities, government, businesses, and civil society organizations-to drive sustainable and equitable outcomes. Many societal challenges such as public services, education, and community empowerment fall beyond purely market-driven interests. Under these circumstances, social innovation becomes necessary. Through a collection of case studies of social innovation and forward-looking strategies, this book offers valuable insights into how societies can adapt and thrive in the ever-evolving digital landscape in a vast country like Indonesia, where people have to deal with economic, cultural, and technological disparities. Developing countries like Indonesia are not immune to the rapid influx of digital technology, which is swiftly disrupting both markets and social structures. As in other parts of the world, this wave of technological disruption presents unprecedented opportunities but also introduces significant uncertainties for current and future life. These challenges are particularly pronounced in Indonesia, where inequalities in digital access, technological proficiency, and economic disparity persist, further complicating the situation for individuals, organizations, and policymakers. As technological developments accelerate and unpredictably reshape social structures, anticipating future trajectories becomes increasingly difficult. Agility is therefore essential for navigating this complexity. This book is relevant to social scientists interested in the intersections between technology, society, education, innovation, and policy, in the context of Indonesia, and beyond.

It explores how the MCA navigated the political landscape during this period, focusing on their service-oriented strategies to maintain political support among the Chinese community in Bentong. By examining the general elections from 2008 - 2018, this book provides a comprehensive analysis of the intersection between service politics and ethnic identity in Malaysia. With the present worldwide focus on ethnic politics and governance, this book provides fresh insights into the techniques used by political parties to gain support from minority communities.

Central Asia is a huge region characterized by a rich variety of ecologies, climates, geographical environments, social systems, languages and cultures. Within this region multiple cultural exchanges took place. At the same time, it engaged in bi-directional exchange with neighboring regions such as the Pontic Steppe, the Near East, the Indian subcontinent and East Asia. Mobility was a key precondition for these multifaceted contacts and exchanges, and it concerned people, goods and products as well as ideas, concepts and innovations. The papers presented at the 3rd International Conference on Central Asian Archaeology focus on how cultural transmission processes developed and what role mobility played in these processes. The time frame is from the Early Bronze Age to the end of the 14th century CE. Special attention will be paid to the added value that archaeogenetics brings to research. Archaeogenetics is an outstanding tool to detect and verify migrations and is rapidly growing in importance. Several papers demonstrate how archaeogenetic and isotopic studies contribute to the detection and understanding of mobility-induced cultural exchange.

Often gracing the tables of weddings and banquets, shark fin symbolizes opulence and prestige in China and beyond. Yet its rise from offcut to delicacy reveals a complex history of how value is constructed and transformed. Drawing on sources in Chinese and English, as well as materials in French, Japanese, Spanish, and Italian, The Silver Thread tracks how this oceanic product came to have symbolic and material value, particularly during the Ming and Qing periods when domestic affluence deepened and became entangled with transregional commerce. Each chapter revolves around a question, such as: How did shark fin make its way from sea to banquet hall? Who advocated for its classification as a delicacy? How were taste, medicine, and ethics intertwined in its consumption?

In The Silver Thread, taste constitutes a language of social and moral distinction rather than sensation per se. Shark fin is both an object and an idea at the crossroads of nature and culture, where ritual and economy are mutually implicated, and where excess and moderation coincide. This book is hardly an apologia for shark fin consumption. It is, in part, a use of history to revisit tradition. Extending his analysis beyond cuisine, Ronald C. Po reconsiders "maritime China" less as a venue for trade, war, or navigation than a porous space formed through meaning and identity.

This book presents a lecture on the history of ancient Chinese architecture, which was offered by Chinese archaeologist Bai SU for students of archaeology at Peking University. It first introduces readers to the site of the late Yangshao Culture ca. 5,000 years ago, the earliest ground architecture in China. Then, it discusses the representative architecture of each era, from the Shang and Zhou Dynasties to the Ming and Qing Dynasties, including its essential characteristics and characteristics of the times, and clarifies the development of Chinese architecture. Approaching ancient Chinese architecture from an innovative perspective and providing a research method for assessing the development of Chinese archaeology from an architectural standpoint, the book includes a wealth of photographs and hand-drawn drawings accumulated over SU's years of research, offering an invaluable resource for readers seeking to understand the characteristics of ancient Chinese architecture.

In Myanmar's Kalay Valley, a rice-growing region near the Indian border, farmers have long been subject to violence and neglect. Surviving the State considers how these farmers' everyday, land-based practices enable them to endure successive authoritarian regimes. Through robust ethnography, Hilary Oliva Faxon describes how Burman and Chin smallholders treat land not only as a source of food, but also as a living thing entwined with the families it supports. She considers the centrality of land both to state efforts at control and to inhabitants' ability to articulate claims, looking at how locals evade, obfuscate, and reinvent legal boundaries in the face of seizures, redistribution, and revolution. Providing a feminist ethnography of land politics, Surviving the State is a testament to the daily work of survival in the face of political violence.

With more than 180 million migrants worldwide, roughly 2.3 percent of the global population, migration is a global phenomenon, characterized by cross-border movements that are strikingly varied. This book discusses the current state of migration as a question of governance rather than crisis, examining contemporary migration movements within the legal, political, and economic structures that shape who may move, and why. The book focuses on Latin America, a region shaped by long histories of mobility, and the immigration policy frameworks of the United States, the European Union, and Latin America and the Caribbeans, tracing how different institutional architectures face similar migratory pressures but obtain markedly different outcomes. Ultimately, the book argues that migration functions as a governance barometer, by introducing the concept of policy elasticity, and exploring the limitations of existing "one-size-fits-all" approaches.
