This book project presents a set of perspectives surveying critical theories of racial identity and racism, in light of the history of colonial and neocolonial Christendom in Latin America and the United States. It frames the fundamental ideological power of racism in Western modernity (since 1492), including the role of racial identification in the globalization of capitalism. The volume also considers several approaches for understanding the construction of race: narrative and biographical approaches, critical theories of race and racial discourse, and presents several sketches of historical moments in Spain, Latin America, and the U.S ultimately illustrating how racialized religious conflicts shaped the modern, globalized social order. It is a perfect read for scholars of Latinx Theology, Latin American Religious History and Critical Race Studies.

The United States-Mexico border has been a contested space and a political and ideological apparatus since the early twentieth century. While today we think of the border as a method to exclude people from the United States, the earliest curfews at the line between the two countries were designed to keep Americans within their territorial boundaries and reinforce the moral geography of the United States.

In Moral Divide Catherine Christensen Gwin sheds new light on a largely forgotten chapter in the history of the U.S.-Mexico border, when it was a place of agency among Euro-American clubwomen reformers and sex workers. White women in California's Progressive movement sowed panic over prostitution, pushing American sex workers into the vice districts of Mexico, where American pleasure seekers followed. In response, clubwomen initiated a crusade to control U.S. citizens and their pursuit of illicit leisure in Mexico. These ideals of morality were used to enforce border restrictions and developed stereotypes of Mexicans as rapists and traffickers. Christensen Gwin brings the Mexican perspective on vice tourism to the fore, showing how Mexican officials responded to the sex trade, while also discussing the invention and juxtaposition of the white human trafficking victim and the criminal drug trafficking woman. The "moral divide" that resulted from these gendered and racialized politics of national purification set the stage for the exclusionary border regime we live with today.

Michael Deibert's With the Pen in One Hand and the Sword in the Other is a sweeping history of Haiti's first century, examining its complex internal political dynamics, the vital role the nation played in liberation movements throughout the Americas, and its tangled relations with the United States. Weaving the diverse stories of the region into a vibrant tapestry of shared struggle under the shadow of both colonial European powers and an ever-more-assertive United States, Deibert uses decades of experience in the region to bring such historical figures as Frederick Douglass, Simon Bolivar, Antenor Firmin, and Ramon Emeterio Betances to life in new and vivid ways. In doing so, he also examines the shared histories of Haiti and the United States, the hemisphere's two oldest independent republics, and the values each espoused and claimed to live by, sometimes coalescing and sometimes clashing. This book is a collection of contributions by researchers working in various fields of humanities and cultural studies with a focus on the most important contemporary terms needed to understand the Korean Wave (Hallyu) and Korean studies. In recent decades, Hallyu has evolved far beyond the export of Korean popular culture or the commercial success of individual media products. It has become a complex, multilayered cultural formation-one that no longer lends itself to simple explanations. As such, Hallyu persistently raises new questions, inviting scholars to rethink existing frameworks and stimulating fresh intellectual engagements around the world. Twenty-nine researchers across a diverse range of subject areas in the Humanities and Social Sciences have contributed their expertise. Their academic work, conducted across Korea, the United States, Italy, India, Malaysia, the Philippines, Bangladesh, and beyond, lends this volume its breadth and depth. The entries assembled here encompass both the core concepts that currently anchor Hallyu scholarship and the emerging keywords that offer promising avenues for future research.

When Western missionaries first introduced Protestant Christianity to Korea in 1884, Korean converts adopted beliefs and practices that defied prevailing Confucian norms, including distinct faith-based rituals. By the turn of the twentieth century, during the final years of the Choson dynasty, competing cultural and religious viewpoints started to roil Korean society with frenzied - even life-and-death - controversies over ritual practice. But this was just the beginning. After Japan annexed Korea in 1910, such controversies grew to command the very forefront of public attention, as Koreans and Japanese officials advanced conflicting aspirations for ritual transformation against the backdrop of colonial politics.

New Protestant rites revealed religion to be a source of perpetual division at a time when disparate groups, including Confucian intellectuals, Korean cultural nationalists, and Japanese colonial authorities, each aspired to unify rites - and the Korean people - in service of their competing cultural, social, and political agendas. Hajin Jun argues that Protestant Christianity triggered a public reckoning over the place of religious difference in Korean society. Fast-proliferating ritual reforms not only sought to restrain unruly faith-based rites but religious difference itself, efforts that turned increasingly coercive as the Japanese empire shifted towards war. By tracing this story of ritual change, Unruly Rites sheds new light on the fraught intersection of religion and political power in colonial Korea.

The literature has highlighted the tensions between democracy and anti-corruption efforts, considering their changing meanings over time. These debates have been traversed by understandings of how to ensure appropriate connections between the public and the private, bearing in mind some of their alternative meanings (e.g., for the public as the state, the commons, manifest or impersonal- reasonable interests). Colombia faced these debates at two critical junctures, which led Congress to pass party and anti-corruption laws in both time periods. To contribute to the understanding of these puzzling tensions, the research aimed to solve the following question: Why did Colombian legislators understand some public-private relations as adequate for Colombian democracy, while others as corrupt in the approval of the 1992-1995 and 2010-2011 party and anti-corruption laws, and why did these understandings change? Solving this question required consulting the literature that has addressed the discussion points on democratization, corruption and the public-private. This, in order to guide the diachronic comparison. The sampling material was composed by the transcription of the debates in Congress that ended in the approval of the mentioned laws, following a qualitative content analysis. It was observed that the congresspeople tended to modify their emphasis of the democratic and non-corrupt: from the protection of the common to the impersonal-reasonable interests.

Based on more than two decades of ethnographic engagement with the urban margins of Brazil, this book offers unique and detailed insights into the "politics of the periphery". Providing a long-term analysis of the residents of the periphery of the city of Recife and their interactions with state representatives and institutions, it contributes to a better understanding of the politics of marginalized populations around the world. Critiquing approaches that see politics of marginalized populations as an expression of deficient citizenship, as informal politics, or as protest against the authorities, Martijn Koster shows how the politics of the periphery combines resistance with compliance as well as indifference, intertwining formal procedures and meetings with informal negotiations and exchanges.

Abdullah bin 'Abd al-'Aziz (1924-2015) was an unlikely contender for the Saudi throne. His kinship ties within the royal family were weak. Yet he rose to power, finally becoming king in 2005. His main instrument was the Saudi Arabian National Guard (SANG), which he took over in 1963, transforming it into a personal power base and a cornerstone of regime security. This book offers the first comprehensive history of SANG, using Abdullah's little-studied trajectory to illuminate how power functions in Saudi Arabia.

Tracing SANG's evolution from tribal roots to the present, Joshua Teitelbaum explores the enduring role of tribal values - especially kinship - in shaping Saudi society and the modern state. Drawing on newly declassified archival documents and Arabic-language sources, Teitelbaum also uncovers rival royal kinship networks and an American intelligence-business network that challenged Abdullah and SANG. The narrative concludes with Crown Prince Muhammad bin Salman, whose rule continues this kinship-based network system with a new network of his own. Ultimately, this book reveals how kinship and patronage underpin Saudi governance, providing key insight into one of the world's most opaque and strategically vital monarchies.

This book challenges Eurocentric foundations of the sociological category of "sect," demonstrating why it is inadequate to understand Hindu sectarian formations. It argues that caste is central-not peripheral-to how sectarian orders within Hinduism emerge, persist, and transform. By foregrounding Assamese Vaishnavism-a Bhakti tradition that emerged in the 15th century and has now become emblematic of the region-the book places Assam, often marginalised in accounts of Indian religious traditions, at the centre of analysis. It offers a critical account of Bhakti by tracing its entanglements with local caste hierarchies and broader historical processes, thereby reframing Vaishnavism through the social and political specificities of postcolonial Assam.

Syphilis had existed in Ottoman society since the sixteenth century, but it became an alarming public health problem in the nineteenth century. As the epidemic raged with population movements across provincial and imperial borders, Ottoman authorities mobilized medical staff and implemented public hygiene regulations. Secil Yilmaz unravels how a disease long associated with shame and secrecy became a key site through which Ottomans expanded their hegemony and governance, situating medicine and sex at the center of imperial rule.

For over a century, construction has been at the heart of the struggle over Palestine/Israel. The ability to build on the land, the capacity to extract materials from it, and the development of economic and technological dominance in the construction industry were all central to Palestinian and Zionist ambitions to establish modern national communities.
