Pakistan's Punjab Irrigation Department manages one of the world's largest irrigation networks. Such bureaucracies are typically considered paradigmatic sites of corruption, inefficiency, and depoliticization, particularly in post-colonial settings. The Work of Water turns this assumption on its head, arguing that the postcolonial promise of welfare and development hinges not on elite policy or expertise but everyday bureaucratic labor.
Drawing on a decade of ethnographic and archival research, Maira Hayat offers a historical ethnography of irrigation infrastructure and its administration in the Indus basin, showing that bureaucracy is a key site where the political and ethical are navigated. Moving from irrigation offices and outlets to courtrooms, archives, village council gatherings, and international treaty arbitrations, the book traces how the materiality of water is produced through disputes, ethical conundrums, rules, calculations, files and development projects. Attending to law, religion, gender, authority and corruption as they are navigated every day, the book reveals how the flows and stoppages of water might enable or frustrate human designs. The Work of Water offers a powerful rethinking of environmental governance at a moment of intensifying climate strain. At stake, Hayat demonstrates, is not only the governance of nature, but the nature of governance itself.

Stories of migrants building precarious futures through ingenuity, desire, obligation, and resilienceIndia's cities depend on millions of rural migrants whose labor sustains urban life. City Lives, Rural Ties brings their overlooked stories into focus through vivid portraits of migrants who have forged footholds in cities such as Delhi and Hyderabad while remaining strongly connected to rural homes.
Neither the most privileged nor the most destitute, they occupy an often-ignored middle ground. Vinay Gidwani and Priti Ramamurthy call them "middle migrants": people who balance unstable urban livelihoods with enduring obligations to family and community in the countryside. They navigate uncertain work, precarious housing, and shifting aspirations while sustaining complex networks of care and support that stretch between village and city.
The stories illuminate dreams of dignity, education, and independence along with the daily improvisations required by the informal economy. Women's strategies for maneuvering emerge as especially powerful threads. Combining ethnographic insight with compelling storytelling, City Lives, Rural Ties offers a deeply human portrait of lives lived between places, possibilities, and responsibilities.

The volume features a range of compelling chapters analysed from various critical perspectives. Postcolonialism, Religious syncretism, Resistance, Ethical Sociality, Cultural pastiche are the key traits of the volume. This book brings together selected papers presented in the international conference on "Women Thinkers and Thoughts in Colonial and Postcolonial India: Ideas, Histories and Methodologies" held at the Department of English, Dr. Meghnad Saha College, India, on 17-18 March 2025. The conference was held in association with Kailashbasini Centre for Women's Studies, Dr. Meghnad Saha College and in collaboration with the UGC-MMTTC, University of North Bengal, and the Department of English, Gour Mahavidyalaya. The aim of this international academic gathering was to reorient the critical focus on women thinkers and their intellectual contribution in colonial and postcolonial India in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
The papers collected here showcase how women's right to think and articulate has long been inadequately recognized by the conventional structure of subordination owing to the politics of control and discrimination; how these intersecting forces relegated women's thought in the history of ideas in colonial India. They also illustrate how, despite this structure of suppression, women thinkers have consistently engaged with the social, cultural, political and religious debates since the mid-nineteenth century and have asserted their agency as social, cultural and political thinkers.
Found in this volume are critical dialogues on the ideas, histories and methodologies presented by women thinkers in colonial and postcolonial India. The analytical arguments presented in this conference lead to a rethinking of the categorization of the "intellectual" to understand the trajectory of the gendered intellectual tradition. As well, there is a remapping of the different modes of cultural translations to reconstruct the transcultural conversations among the women thinkers across temporal and spatial boundaries.
This conference proceedings focuses on recovering the lost voices of those women who reshaped methodologies and ethnographies to unearth the hidden terrain of women's thought by challenging male-centric canonization. In this manner, the gendered barrier to explore new avenues of knowledge production is broken down, making the world a more sustainable place, equitably shared by each gender.

Fresh insights from a unique new data set inform understanding of Pakistan's strategic thinking
Is Pakistan an aggressive, revisionist state-or a deeply insecure one whose choices reflect anxiety as much as ambition? Outside observers and many scholars have assumed the former, attributing Pakistan's behavior to a strategic culture defined by hostility and risk acceptance. But this conclusion has rested on surprisingly thin evidentiary foundations, often relying on narrow samples of Pakistani sources to showcase continuity while overlooking debate, adaptation, and change.
Insecurity and Ambition seeks to remedy this by using a unique new data set of Pakistan's official and semiofficial strategic literature to examine how ideas, culture, and external pressures shape how the country's strategic thinkers talk about the goals, threats, and strategies that it should adopt as it confronts an uncertain world. Edited by Christopher Clary and Sameer Lalwani, the book features insights from leading and rising scholars, ensuring a balance of local and international perspectives on the most pressing contemporary security issues.
Scholars and practitioners of South Asian security and international relations from various research traditions will gain fresh insights into how Pakistan views India, United States-Pakistan relations, Pakistan's shift toward China, Pakistan's nuclear program, the climate crisis in South Asia, and more.

This book uses an International Relations Constructivist approach to analyze the greening of the Belt and Road Initiative in the wider context of Beijing's counterhegemonic efforts. The book's first part shows that, since 2013, China has been constructing a new international order. The numerous large prestige infrastructure projects of the BRI have served as material incentives allowing for the Chinese socialization of Global South political elites. In recent years, however, the Western infrastructure counteroffensive and severe financial difficulties have seriously hampered this process. In response, President Xi decided to make the BRI smaller, "cleaner," and greener. Given the first two changes' lack of results, greening remains the only way to restore the Initiative's effectiveness. This book's second part shows that despite a "mountain" of pro-environment policy documents, the BRI greening is, in large measure, little more than greenwashing. However, it has been successful in achieving its real objective. The Green BRI helps create long-lasting center-periphery relationships of dependence and, more importantly, tries to take control of the global environmental governance system or, if this fails, to create a new one. This governance system becomes a component of the Chinese-led international order, thus strengthening and bringing it closer to maturity.

Michael Deibert's With the Pen in One Hand and the Sword in the Other is a sweeping history of Haiti's first century, examining its complex internal political dynamics, the vital role the nation played in liberation movements throughout the Americas, and its tangled relations with the United States. Weaving the diverse stories of the region into a vibrant tapestry of shared struggle under the shadow of both colonial European powers and an ever-more-assertive United States, Deibert uses decades of experience in the region to bring such historical figures as Frederick Douglass, Simon Bolivar, Antenor Firmin, and Ramon Emeterio Betances to life in new and vivid ways. In doing so, he also examines the shared histories of Haiti and the United States, the hemisphere's two oldest independent republics, and the values each espoused and claimed to live by, sometimes coalescing and sometimes clashing. A must-read for anyone interested in Latin American and Caribbean history as well as the history of the antebellum and postbellum United States, With the Pen in One Hand and the Sword in the Other restores Haiti to its rightful place as a nation at the forefront of the struggle for human freedom during the era and presents, in dramatic and compelling form, the glories and costs that came from being at the forefront of that battle.

In this groundbreaking history, Amy Kerner explores the critical role of the Yiddish language in defining ethnicity and belonging for Argentina's Jewish diaspora, the largest in Latin America. Jews came to Argentina's provinces and growing cities as immigrants and refugees from Europe beginning in the late nineteenth century. Although Jewish immigrants were multilingual, they nevertheless gave Yiddish a central place in Jewish Argentine culture for over a century. Kerner elucidates how the longstanding influence of Yiddish culture in Argentine Jewish life resulted from national migration policies, urban modernity, populism, and the alliance of Yiddish speakers with Argentine anti-fascism. In turn, Jewish Argentines used Yiddish to document, debate, and respond to events on local and global scales, including the Holocaust, Israeli Zionism, and Latin American state terror.
Drawing on extensive archival research, Kerner argues that Jewish Argentines used Yiddish to navigate changing political ideologies and ethnic boundaries across a century of Jewish Argentine history. Untangling the complex interplay of transnational and local politics in shaping the uses and meanings of Yiddish, Language in Transit offers fresh insights for the histories of Jewish culture and language in Argentina and Latin America.

The United States-Mexico border has been a contested space and a political and ideological apparatus since the early twentieth century. While today we think of the border as a method to exclude people from the United States, the earliest curfews at the line between the two countries were designed to keep Americans within their territorial boundaries and reinforce the moral geography of the United States.
In Moral Divide Catherine Christensen Gwin sheds new light on a largely forgotten chapter in the history of the U.S.-Mexico border, when it was a place of agency among Euro-American clubwomen reformers and sex workers. White women in California's Progressive movement sowed panic over prostitution, pushing American sex workers into the vice districts of Mexico, where American pleasure seekers followed. In response, clubwomen initiated a crusade to control U.S. citizens and their pursuit of illicit leisure in Mexico. These ideals of morality were used to enforce border restrictions and developed stereotypes of Mexicans as rapists and traffickers. Christensen Gwin brings the Mexican perspective on vice tourism to the fore, showing how Mexican officials responded to the sex trade, while also discussing the invention and juxtaposition of the white human trafficking victim and the criminal drug trafficking woman. The "moral divide" that resulted from these gendered and racialized politics of national purification set the stage for the exclusionary border regime we live with today.

Syphilis had existed in Ottoman society since the sixteenth century, but it became an alarming public health problem in the nineteenth century. As the epidemic raged with population movements across provincial and imperial borders, Ottoman authorities mobilized medical staff and implemented public hygiene regulations. Secil Yilmaz unravels how a disease long associated with shame and secrecy became a key site through which Ottomans expanded their hegemony and governance, situating medicine and sex at the center of imperial rule.
Anatomy of Empire reveals the multifaceted implications of biopolitics found in the encounters and negotiations among the diseased, sex workers, working-class men, and physicians within a complex imperial bureaucracy. Medical knowledge and practices became effective tools to govern and discipline a population, particularly as Ottoman physicians formulated vernacular forms of sexology that re-fashioned love, desire, and marriage. As syphilis persisted across the world, Ottomans joined their European counterparts in pursuit of bacteriological discoveries to understand the causes behind the resilience of this silent yet destructive disease. With this book, Yilmaz offers a history of gender, sexuality, and medicine, one set in a consequential geography - in the lands of Ottomans at the verge of their demise - and unearths how truth regimes pertaining to the body and sexuality are indispensable components of modern imperial governance.

Each chapter focuses on different aspects of political dynamics, navigating the nexus between the analogue and digital worlds.
Drawing on case studies from East, West and South Africa, the book provides in-depth analyses of political mobilisation, digital identification, medical drones, electoral campaigning and the monetisation of digital platforms. Theoretical discussions include African communitarianism, digital indigeneity, democratisation and changes in political discourse.
Based on a comprehensive theoretical framework and grounded in empirical research, this book offers critical reflection and a deeper understanding of digital politics. It will appeal to students, researchers and scholars of African studies, media and digital studies, African politics, political science and area studies, as well as policy-makers interested in a better understanding of digital politics in Africa.

The literature has highlighted the tensions between democracy and anti-corruption efforts, considering their changing meanings over time. These debates have been traversed by understandings of how to ensure appropriate connections between the public and the private, bearing in mind some of their alternative meanings (e.g., for the public as the state, the commons, manifest or impersonal- reasonable interests). Colombia faced these debates at two critical junctures, which led Congress to pass party and anti-corruption laws in both time periods. To contribute to the understanding of these puzzling tensions, the research aimed to solve the following question: Why did Colombian legislators understand some public-private relations as adequate for Colombian democracy, while others as corrupt in the approval of the 1992-1995 and 2010-2011 party and anti-corruption laws, and why did these understandings change? Solving this question required consulting the literature that has addressed the discussion points on democratization, corruption and the public-private. This, in order to guide the diachronic comparison. The sampling material was composed by the transcription of the debates in Congress that ended in the approval of the mentioned laws, following a qualitative content analysis. It was observed that the congresspeople tended to modify their emphasis of the democratic and non-corrupt: from the protection of the common to the impersonal-reasonable interests.

This book examines the incompatibility of Western democratic models within African socio-political contexts. The book explores historical, cultural, and structural factors that make the wholesale adoption of Western democracy problematic for African nations. It argues that democracy, as practiced in the West, often overlooks indigenous governance systems and traditional values, leading to political instability and governance failures. The work proposes alternative frameworks rooted in African realities, aiming to foster sustainable governance and development. This book's focus is on whether Western liberal democracy is fundamentally incompatible with the historical, sociocultural, and cultural conditions of Africa. Critics contend that Africa's community ethos and spiritual traditions are incompatible with Western democracy's emphasis on individualism, adversarial politics, and secularism.

Indigenous Psychology and Decolonial Approaches in Latin America: Perspectives on Colonial Trauma offers a groundbreaking exploration of Indigenous psychological frameworks as tools of resistance, healing, and epistemological transformation in postcolonial Latin America. Estevao Rafael Fernandes, an anthropologist specializing in South American Indigenous communities, presents a richly interdisciplinary study that foregrounds the lived experiences of Indigenous, Afro-Latin, and Latina women across the continent.
Drawing on decolonial theory and Indigenous epistemologies, the book examines how colonial trauma continues to shape psychological landscapes through systemic violence, cultural erasure, and environmental degradation. Fernandes engages with thinkers such as Anibal Quijano, Lelia Gonzalez, and Gloria Anzaldua to illuminate how Indigenous Psychology challenges Western paradigms and offers culturally grounded alternatives to dominant therapeutic models.
Through case studies of Afro-diasporic religions, feminist resistance movements, and community-led healing initiatives, the book reveals how spiritual practices, embodied knowledge, and relational identity serve as powerful mechanisms for psychological resilience and cultural continuity. It also addresses the complexities of urban Indigenous youth, LGBTQ+ identities, and religious pluralism, emphasizing the dynamic adaptability of Indigenous psychological practices.
This book contributes to the growing field of Indigenous Psychology by offering a situated, intersectional, and politically engaged analysis that resists universalizing frameworks. It is essential reading for scholars and practitioners seeking to understand the interplay between colonial histories, cultural identity, and mental health in Latin America.
