The French countryside is as beloved by the many millions of tourists who visit it each year as it is of French people themselves. But it has not always looked like it does today. An Environmental History of France instead presents the countryside in which people live and work and through which they travel as a human creation across 250 years of economic and cultural change, war and revolution. It is a book about the 'making' of the French landscape and an engrossing story linking human geography, history, agriculture and culture.Showing an awareness of the origins and nature of current ecological and social challenges, Peter McPhee uses a blend of environmental and cultural approaches to paint a vivid picture of rural France's modern history. From the aristocratic control of agrarian resources in the 1770s, to widespread mechanisation in the 19th century, through to the impact of the World Wars and an intriguing discussion about the uncertain future of French rural communities, McPhee provides a nuanced, detailed and absorbing account of a distinctive version of France that is essential to the country's identity.

Underwater Worlds: An Ethnography of Waste, Pollution, and Marine Life. (Sustainable Development Goals Series) 248 pp. 2024:8 (Palgrave Macmillan, UK) <732-984>
ISBN 978-3-031-63369-0 hard ¥30,598.- (税込) EUR 129.99
This book investigates relations between humans, waste, pollution, and marine life. It introduces the concept of Aquabiopolitics as a means to understand how humans govern life in water in order to enrich human life on land. The study focuses on the Baltic Sea and Lake Maelaren, using Stockholm, the capital of Sweden, as the connection point. Throughout the book, the author explores how human practices over time have had devastating effects on marine life and continue to have so today. The book engages with the marine world through underwater ethnography to provide a perspective on water from below the surface. In this endeavor, it tracks marine scientists and trash scuba divers who are jointly invested in tracking human maltreatment of water and finding solutions for treating water differently in the future. It follows the scientists on expeditions at sea and to their laboratories in order to learn about their methods and relations to underwater worlds. Together with the trash scuba divers, we will dive into the dark murky waters around Stockholm-experiencing what it is like to move below water, among sharp and toxic waste, without any visibility. The work of creating a knowing and caring relationship between humans and water is of key importance to both scientists and divers. Therefore, one of the main parts of this book is to analyze how, and if, this relationship can be created: via social media, images, installations, or other means.

V.トーマス著 気候変動の時代におけるリスクと弾力性 第2版
Thomas, Vinod,
Risk and Resilience in the Era of Climate Change. 2nd ed. 227 pp. 2024:10 (Palgrave Macmillan, UK) <732-987>
ISBN 978-981-9727-68-1 hard ¥5,410.- (税込) EUR 22.99
This book presents essential insights on the interaction between rising risks and raising the bar for resilience during the climate crisis. Its timeliness lies in applying important findings on risk and resilience to runaway climate change. When risk and resilience are brought together in the context of climate catastrophes, three key messages emerge. The first is that accounting for the root causes, and not just their symptoms, is essential to slowing these events. It is therefore vital to link carbon emissions from human activity to the sharp rise in climate disasters globally. The second is that growth economics and policy must factor in the failure of governments and businesses to tackle spillover harm from economic activities, as seen strikingly with global warming AND BIODIVERSITY LOSS. With climate risks rising, this calls for a fundamental revision of the framing of growth in the teaching and practice of business and economics. And third, prevention must become a far bigger part of resilience building, with preparedness to avert or handle tougher eventualities built into interventions. Emphasis on prevention deems disaster recovery as not just returning to how things were but building back better.

Salleh, Ariel,
DeColonise EcoModernism! 304 pp. 2024:12 (Bloomsbury Academic, UK) <732-64>
ISBN 978-1-4742-7761-7 hard ¥18,518.- (税込) GB£ 65.00
ISBN 978-1-4742-7760-0 paper ¥5,694.- (税込) GB£ 19.99
In this opening volume to a trilogy of works critiquing and undermining our approach to our environment, Ariel Salleh argues we need a new word for the contemporary age: the Androcene. This concept establishes patriarchal capitalist coloniality as the foundational issue destroying both the planet and the lives and exist with it. The Androcene is the deepest most intractable fracture of humans from the wider world of natural relations. Salleh peels away the most recent and overt political layers back to their historical source and the healing rediscovery of matristic values. This is a truly intersectional approach to the ecological crisis - one that doesn't prioritise one species over another (e.g. humans over animals) a particular gender over another (the problem of systematic patriarchy) one race or nation over each other or accept the uneven spread of wealth and resources throughout the globe. Salleh takes as her premise that if all these issues intersect, we need to decolonialise the language and thinking we use to dismantle these overlapping worlds of inequality.

Crowther, David / Seifi, Shahla (eds.),
CSR, Governance and Value. (Approaches to Global Sustainability, Markets, and Governance) 239 pp. 2024:8 (Springer, GW) <732-309>
ISBN 978-981-9747-94-8 hard ¥40,014.- (税込) EUR 169.99
This book presents the changing face of social responsibility, showing how it has grown to encompass governance, becoming a vital part of various aspects of human endeavor. From businesses to politics to justice systems, Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) has expanded its reach, touching every sphere of human activity. What is particularly interesting is how governance failures have highlighted its importance in addressing the economic and social challenges that many organizations face today. This shift has led to a reevaluation of the traditional triple bottom line approach, with governance and supplier behavior emerging as critical components of CSR. Stakeholders, especially consumers, are now actively monitoring companies, influencing their decisions and ultimately impacting their bottom line. The book critically examines these transformations in business behavior through the lenses of governance and CSR, questioning the need for redefining key concepts in the field. Authored by scholars from diverse global backgrounds, it blends theoretical insights with practical considerations, offering a comprehensive exploration of the evolving landscape. Drawing from the tradition of the Social Responsibility Research Network, known for its inclusive approach and emphasis on interdisciplinary research, the book presents varied perspectives and solutions derived from shared best practices. Based on contributions from the Network's recent conference, this book showcases both the unity and diversity of ideas within the field. By examining both theory and practice, it aims to deepen our understanding of these evolving trends and their implications for defining key concepts in social responsibility and governance.
