Catching Air documents the lives of diver fishermen navigating changing marine environments and shifting conservation policies in the Dominican Republic. As nearshore ecologies decline and conservation policies are enacted to protect them, commercial divers follow fish into deeper water, risking decompression sickness, injury, and death. An incisive case study of a community on the front lines of the climate crisis, this book explores the unintended impacts of environmental regulations that, while meaning to protect vulnerable ecologies, often magnify experiences of bodily risk and dispossession among those who are most vulnerable to environmental change.

Sustainability Communications offers a timely and practical examination of how sustainability is being communicated across corporate, NGO, and government sectors. As sustainability becomes a core component of global business strategy-tied not only to reputation, but also to regulation-the role of communications and PR professionals is rapidly evolving. This book provides a comprehensive overview of how communicators can navigate the complex and often high-stakes environment of sustainability communications in a way that is transparent, ethical, and aligned with stakeholder expectations. Bridging theory and practice, this book offers models, tools, and real-world guidance for professionals managing sustainability narratives. It addresses the challenges posed by new terminologies, fast-changing legislation, and rising public scrutiny. Drawing on global perspectives, this book features contributions from practitioners with on-the-ground experience, ensuring a diverse and internationally relevant framework. It also explores how communicators must adapt in the age of the chief sustainability officer, where credibility and consistency in messaging are essential to organisational integrity.

This book is aimed at communications and marketing professionals seeking to deepen their strategic capabilities in sustainability, as well as students and researchers in communications studies. It will also be of value to sustainability practitioners who wish to better collaborate with communications teams in order to align messaging with broader ESG objectives. Whether in professional practice or academic development, this volume supports readers in building both the insight and skill set needed to lead in this critical and emerging field.

Stories have always enabled people to make sense of the world and others, and this book encourages a radical rethinking of how we tell stories about climate change. This book proposes that, while climate change may be a result of policy failures and the incompatibility of capitalism with our finite resources, climate change represents a crisis of imagination-an inability to articulate a differentiated collective problem in ways that inspire, motivate and prompt individual and shared responses to larger but common goals.

Considering the contrasting perspectives of writer Amitav Ghosh and theorist Mark Bould, this book reconciles their views for criminologists and all those concerned about-and working towards avoiding-catastrophic climate change.

Looking beyond current sanitation models in the US to develop new ways of managing human waste as a resource.

What happens when you flush the toilet? Where does the waste go?

In this engagingly written ethnographic study, Nick Kawa follows the trail of human bodily excrement as it travels through multiple sites in the American Midwest. In addition to documenting the treatment and transformation of sanitation waste, this book chronicles the growing movement to promote sewage sludge, or "biosolids," for fertilizing industrial farm fields, urban gardens, city parks, and ecological restoration sites-a complex endeavor that has fueled debates about potential harms to human and environmental health.

After the Flush presents the modern sanitation system through the eyes of insider experts, sharing insights from wastewater treatment operators and environmental scientists but also activists who advocate for alternative models to the industrial system. These include low-cost forms of ecological sanitation, illustrated through the author's own experiments with a compost toilet. Reframing human bodily waste as simply part of the human biome, this book offers radical possibilities for managing the human relationship to self, body, community, and ecology.

Reframing traditional conceptions of ecology

Ecologies of Resistance brings together fourteen groundbreaking studies on Latin American and Latinx writing, visual and performing arts, film, and activism that propose alternatives to prevailing colonial and neocolonial conceptions of ecology. The contributors question the artificially imposed separation of the human and nonhuman, human dominance over place, and the concept of progress measured in strictly economic terms. They also examine how the notion of ecology has been discursively framed to justify colonial systems of power. With its integration of Ancestral, Afro-Latin American, and Latinx perspectives, this collection proposes new worldviews that emphasize marginalized voices and contest modernity's troubled legacy.

Ecologies of Resistance blurs the lines that have traditionally separated artistic expression from political activism and theory. Its innovative cross-disciplinary approach and exploration of alternative practices and theories from Latin America and Latinx contexts enriches contemporary ecocritical studies and the quest for a world that upholds plural forms of being.

The Crisis of the Fourteenth Century has been regarded as a turning-point in world history, but it has typically only been approached from a European perspective. This volume expands that view by focusing on Asia and the Middle East (Afro-Eurasia) and by including environmental approaches that recognise the shifts in the Eurasian socio-ecological regime from the Medieval Climate Anomaly to the Little Ice Age. It therefore positions this period of history within three interrelated contexts - climate change, political upheaval outside Europe and a transcontinental pandemic - making historical connections typically not considered in studies of the Crisis. Bringing together thus-far neglected topics and case studies, and based on new sources and palaeo-scientific data, this book analyses the Crisis through an interdisciplinary lens. This intersection of climatology, environmental studies and history adds a long-awaited global dimension to the existing scholarship.

This book constructs an economic theory focused on the material foundations of economic activity, providing a basis for economic policies to achieve sustainable development. In this economic theory, inputs that undergo physical transformation once used are termed "throughput resources," while inputs that remain physically intact after use are called the "capital base." Using a two-stage production function-one stage determining physical quantities and the other determining the amount of value added-it demonstrates the theoretical possibility that even economic agents aiming for profit maximization or utility maximization can achieve economic activities where greater value added is realized with fewer throughput resources inputs. It then points out that to elicit such economic activities, certain price groups must be determined outside the market and examines the rationale for goal setting outside the market grounded in capability theory. This book provides a theoretical foundation for policies aimed at dematerialization and decarbonization.

Across ASEAN, decades of rapid economic expansion have improved living standards but also intensified environmental pressures. Rising greenhouse gas emissions, growing energy demand, and accelerating resource depletion now threaten the region's long-term development trajectory. These challenges are unfolding at a time when ASEAN countries, together with Japan, have set ambitious carbon-neutrality goals - targets that require not only national policy innovation, but coordinated regional action.

This book provides an in-depth examination of how Southeast Asia and Japan are navigating the complex transition toward a low-carbon future. It analyzes the evolution of decarbonization policies across the region, from renewable energy strategies and industrial transformation to carbon pricing mechanisms and environmental tax reforms. Particular attention is given to transition finance and investment frameworks that can mobilize capital for cleaner technologies and resilient infrastructure, as well as the governance structures needed to support them.

A central focus of the book is the emerging role of the Asia Zero Emission Community (AZEC), an initiative led by Japan to strengthen cooperation on energy policy, technology deployment, and human resource development. The book explores AZEC's potential to bridge diverse national contexts, support pragmatic pathways to decarbonization, and enhance regional policy alignment while respecting local conditions and development needs.

Drawing on theoretical perspectives, empirical case studies, and policy analysis, this book offers a comprehensive foundation for understanding how Asia can pursue growth while reducing environmental impact. It speaks to scholars, policymakers, investors, and practitioners seeking rigorous insights into the policies, institutions, and cooperative frameworks shaping the region's low-carbon transition.

The One Health (OH) approach recognizes that the health of humans, animals, plants, and the wider environment are closely linked and interdependent. This holistic framework aims to improve health outcomes by promoting collaboration among various sectors, including public health, veterinary medicine, environmental science, agriculture, and ecology. But what contributions can sociology provide for the implementation of One Health initiatives? As global health threats such as COVID-19, Zika virus, and Ebola have increasingly demonstrated the need for an integrated approach, this text breaks fresh ground by demonstrating the policy, research projects, educational interventions, and institutional communications that sociology can offer to the OH approach. Written by a medical sociologist and expert researcher in One Health, this practical book provides a focused approach to the sociology of health in One Health research and highlights the most recent advances in this field. Aimed at researchers interested or involved in OH research, as well as academics and social scientists in organizational studies, sociology and anthropology with a passion for interdisciplinary learning, this powerful study offers a new agenda for the role of social sciences in One Health.

In We Live with the Sea, Andrew Littlejohn addresses the implementation and controversy surrounding safety infrastructures following the March 2011 tsunami in northeastern Japan. While the Japanese government proposed and enforced infrastructural transformations in the wake of the tsunami, these changes did not consider the impact on residents who built their communities and livelihoods around the coast. Focusing on the tsunami survivors who resisted government plans for increased coastal defenses, Littlejohn highlights alternative proposals offered by the local residents as well as the environmental, ecological, and more-than-human dependencies and imbrications those proposals reveal. In doing so, he argues that imposed modernist safety structures undermine the very things they claim to protect, showing how attempts to "ecologize" safety may offer more sustainable ways of thinking about security, preservation, and infrastructure.

The global climate system in seven easy lessons-an essential primer on the science that shapes our world

Earth's changing climate is the defining issue of our time. Climate science should be accessible to everyone, but for too long it has remained impenetrable to nonexperts. Paul Palmer throws open the doors to this vital area of research, inviting readers to discover for themselves how scientists take the measure of a warming planet, how the Sun's rays help to balance Earth's energies, how the planet's rotation affects large-scale atmospheric patterns, how the Anthropocene is fundamentally altering the climate, and much more.

Each chapter of this lively and informative book covers one of the seven key ideas that are central to understanding how our climate works-temperature, energy, air, water, cycles, time, and uncertainty-providing a user-friendly guide to the whole system. Palmer distills complex scientific concepts into plain language, making crucial facts about the climate available to all, regardless of their background. He explores the critical role of molecules and microbes, showing how the smallest elements profoundly influence our planetary destiny, and frames climate science not just in terms of crisis but as an elegant and fascinating area of inquiry, discovery, and shared purpose.

Bridging the gap between science and public perception, How Our Climate Works goes beyond politics and alarmism, empowering readers with the knowledge they need to truly appreciate the profound beauty and fragility of the planet we call home.

There is a growing body of research suggesting that wellbeing and environmental sustainability have little or no interplay or relationship, with some viewing them as often conflicting goals. This book addresses this misconception by highlighting a range of social factors that influence wellbeing challenges. It uniquely advances the traditional emphasis on economic growth by shedding light on the need for the development of pro-social attitudes and behaviours that are essential for achieving more harmonious coexistence with nature. The nascent discoveries from this emerging discipline are already exerting influence on economics, psychology, healthcare, urban planning, and the methodologies employed by national statistical agencies that inform policy decisions.

The editors advance reader's understanding of these complex issues by bringing together critical perspectives that explore best practices of utilising digital transformation as a catalyst, rather than an obstacle, for constructing an environmentally sustainable and socially equitable Global South in alignment with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), with the expertise of 30 leading scholars to provide an up-to-date coverage of sustainability and wellbeing issues confronting the Global South, providing potential solutions.

The International Studies in Small Business and Entrepreneurship Research series opens a new chapter, as it seeks to advance discussions that consolidate conventional knowledge. The purpose of this initiative is to invite new reflections on the nature of entrepreneurship and small business across contexts. The collections in this series aim to improve the theoretical rigour and practical relevance of the field. The emphasis is to advance contemporary contributions that matter for small business and entrepreneurship, directing us to underexplored and under-theorised contexts.

California Futures is a critical study of California as a site of liberatory dreaming, one that takes up the history, politics, and afterlives of the region's colonial imaginings as well as archives of resistance and world-making which strive toward Indigenous, decolonial, Black, queer, feminist, and anti-white supremacist futures. Attending carefully to the colonial, commercial, and environmental entanglements of the region, Daniel Lanza Rivers offers an account of the processes of speculation that worlded California into being. Rivers examines case studies such as the colonial cultures of Grizzly bear eradication and reintroduction; the entanglements of drought, industrial agriculture, and environmental toxicity in California's Central Valley; utopianism in the Klamath Mountains, from the Black Bear Ranch commune to Octavia Butler's Parables series; dam removal and Native climate adaptation on the Klamath watershed; and the policing of unhoused people around Oakland's Lake Merritt. Through these case studies, Rivers interrogates the long histories of settler conquest, extractive and racial capitalism, and heteropatriarchy that have shaped California. They chart strategies for thinking beyond the colonial Anthropocene and toward the post-extractive and liberatory futures that emerge from and with decolonial land relations.

An urban and environmental history of the New Jersey Meadowlands, where marsh meets megamall.

The New Jersey Meadowlands, the vast marshes across the Hudson River from New York City, are a mysterious and complex wetland. Both strange and well-known to the millions of people who traverse the northeast corridor every year, this landscape is not well understood despite its familiarity. Seemingly natural and unnatural, human and nonhuman, the Meadowlands has long been shaped by urban development, industry, infrastructure, and countless dreams.

In Neither Land nor Water, Sevin Yildiz offers a close look at the planners, scientists, developers, politicians, industrialists, and others who have engaged with, dreamed about, or damaged this transitional ecology in different ways over the decades. She traces key periods in the area's rich histories of urban planning and ecological thought, from the dispossession of the Lenape natives, through the dawn of ecological science, and onto both intensive industrial developments and environmental resistance to them. She examines as well how the Meadowlands exposes the inadequacies of today's approaches to planning in the face of climate change and how they perhaps offer clues to a better future.

This book examines the critical intersection of human rights and ocean heritage, encompassing the protection of underwater cultural heritage, the preservation of intangible cultural traditions tied to the sea, and the rights of island communities to self-determination. It highlights the role of navigation practices, maritime knowledge, and cultural identities in sustaining ocean heritage, advocating for equitable frameworks that balance ecological preservation with the cultural and economic needs of those most connected to the oceans. The author combines human rights, cultural heritage, and oceanic studies to address the complex relationship between people and the sea from multiple perspectives. Integrating cultural, ethical, and political dimensions, the author focuses on underrepresented voices and issues, highlighting the challenges faced by island and coastal communities, including their intangible maritime traditions, navigation practices, and struggles for self-determination. This book also explores the role of underwater cultural heritage in global identity, an under-researched and under-represented topic to date.

As a global conversation around political transformation and environmental struggles continues, Southern Visions of Nature examines how Chilean environmental organisations use visual digital media to shape public discourse, build collective identity, and collaborate during political upheaval, revealing the unique intersections of environment, politics, and communication in a Global South context.

Through a rich methodological combination, Aravena-Ortiz explores how environmental organisations in Chile use visual media in digital spaces to advocate, mobilise, and construct collective identities during politically charged moments. Providing a compelling case study of a country with deep environmental challenges, ranging from water scarcity to extractive economies, and a society marked by growing ecological awareness and civic mobilisation, the chapters unpack how environmental discourse became a prominent theme in public debate and visual media emerged as key tools in how EOs communicated their concerns and visions for the future. The author reveals how these communication strategies were used to shape public discourse, are shaped themselves by internal logics, and how they interact with formal and informal partnerships. Centring the voices, practices, and visual languages of Chilean organisations, chapters challenges the often Global North-centric narratives that dominate discussions of digital activism.

Providing a cohesive portrait of contemporary environmental communication in Chile, Southern Visions of Nature contributes to multiple academic fields, including environmental communication, media and visual culture studies, political communication, and Latin American studies. It is both a timely scholarly intervention and a testament to the creative resilience of environmental activism in an age of interconnected crises and within the struggle to imagine and communicate a new future from the Global South.

Love in the Time of Zika examines the transformation of reproductive politics spurred by the Zika public health emergency in 2016. The Zika virus, a mosquito-borne disease with a direct link to fetal and children's disabilities, provoked the surveillance of and intervention into women's and girls' bodies and lives. Paige Marie Patchin tracks this period of intense reproductive experimentation, from fast contraceptive implant insertion drives in Puerto Rico to the genetic modification of mosquitoes in Brazil, to explore the future of reproduction as environmental crises mount, public infrastructures wilt, and walls rise. Patchin questions what kind of a world we are building if the response to dangerous, global environmental problems like Zika is to pit fetuses against one another in a future of limited resources. Set between the twin specters of eugenics and fascism, Love in the Time of Zika argues for the relevance of reproduction to wider questions about what it means to be people living amongst other people, and people living amongst other beings.

An ecologist reveals why the solution to the climate crisis lies in Earth's oldest inhabitants: microbes.

Our planet is in crisis. Scorching temperatures, deadly fires and flooding, and food shortages-the signs are everywhere. Experts warn that the planet is careening toward a point of no return. Yet their solution-eliminating fossil fuels-may not stem the damage soon enough.

In The Age of Microbes Steven Allison argues there's another way forward: microbes. These ubiquitous denizens of our biosphere are resilient to climate change and crucial to all life on Earth, making them ideal partners in the quest to repair the planet. From improved crop yields to sustainable jet fuel and healthier cities, Allison reveals how we can expand upon microbes' natural ability to remove carbon from the atmosphere, clean up pollution, and restore ecosystems.

Weaving together lessons from Indigenous cultures and farmers, scientists and land stewards, The Age of Microbes is not just a blueprint for rescuing a planet in distress. It's also a hopeful message that there's still time to reverse course. But we mustn't wait.

This book addresses the increasing social, scientific and, above all, artistic discussion of soil(s) in current cultural-societal contexts. The end of the "International Decade of Soils" (2015-2024) marked a development that has focussed on the central importance of the earth for life, biodiversity and climate on our planet since the turn of the millennium. In addition to the political and scientific recognition of this, Earth as a material has increasingly become the centre of cultural and artistic debates. In these debates, the awareness of the earth as a living organism initiated in the social and natural science discourse was taken up and further deepened. Earth is thus understood as a carrier of history, culture and identity, as a distinct and genuinely self-sufficient ecosystem that is, however, existentially threatened by climate change, industrialised and unsustainable forms of agriculture, as well as extractivism. In art, soil has evolved from an aesthetic medium to a carrier of political, ecological and historical statements. Artists today thematise ecological crises, colonial violence, land grabbing, plant blindness and the close relationship between humans and the earth. New narrative, archival and installative forms are emerging in which the earth is not just a material but an actor - often in the sense of a 'new materialism' or 'posthumanism'. Numerous exhibitions worldwide testify to the growing interest in the topic of soil in art. Historical pioneers such as Ana Mendieta, Agnes Denes and herman de vries have laid the foundations for today's positions. Current works often take up Indigenous perspectives, feminist approaches and ecological issues and call for a new relationship with the earth - as a living counterpart, not as an object to be exploited. With a number of essays ranging from Western philosophy to Indigenous epistemology, from historical examples to highly topical activist positions, this book aims to give a comprehensive insight into current theoretical and artistic discourses in ecological art studies. It brings together contributions from different continents that shed light on the topic of soil(s) in distinctive cultural contexts: as a 'natural given', political token, artistic matter, mythological bearer, and others. In this light, the eponymous term "soil" is being conceptualized in its pluralistic sense: There is no such thing as definitive and solitary soil, but it has different meanings in different geographical, political, historical and cultural contexts. Contributions by established scholars as well as junior researchers offer a range of methodological approaches: art historical essays weighing in on the aesthetic implications of earthen matter, eco-political and eco-feminist theories, material studies, and others.

From geological maps to photographs and films of snow, ice, clouds, and coral reefs, visual inscriptions mediate the construction and codification of extractive modes of seeing Earth's subterranean depths and aerial heights. Tracing the territorial ambitions of the archipelagic empires of Japan and the United States in the twentieth century, Archives of the Anthropocene explores crucial moments of overlap between the geoscientific history of studying Earth's deep time and the geopolitical history of territorialization, militarization, and extraction in the Pacific and polar regions. By engaging with contemporary critiques of settler colonialism, liberal humanism, and nonhuman labor from the perspective of environmental media studies, Yuriko Furuhata unsettles the anthropocentric and universalist narrative of the Anthropocene, calling us to instead imagine an anticolonial and anti-imperial future for the planet.

An expert compares renewables and nuclear power as sources of low-carbon energy for the electric grid

As the earth warms and we hurtle toward a climate reckoning, many nations are seeking low-carbon, greener ways to generate electricity. Electrification promises to power our vehicles, devices, and infrastructure in a decarbonized future. But, as Peter Wynn Kirby reminds us in The Coming Surge, electricity is only as green as the means used to produce it. Kirby sets up a head-to-head comparison of the two top contenders in the race to produce low-carbon energy for the electric grid: renewables and nuclear. Along the way, he makes predictions about technological development, from AI to automated traffic systems and grid sensor expansion, and considers how political shifts could influence energy policy and environmental outcomes. Through it all, perhaps improbably, he remains optimistic about human resilience and the fate of the planet.

Drawing on extensive fieldwork and research conducted in France, Japan, China, Puerto Rico, Finland, the Netherlands, and Germany, Kirby explores the way different countries are grappling with such issues as global warming, energy-sucking data centers, unsteady grids, infrastructure gigantism, extractive ideology, and carbon culture deprogramming. He finds that, rhetoric aside, nuclear power has fared poorly in a number of countries, including the United States, because it has been unable to compete on the basis of cost. As solar and wind costs have plummeted in recent years, renewables now appeal to municipal governments and utility companies even in deep red states like Oklahoma, Kansas, and especially Texas-the country's top wind producer. In the end, he suggests that the future of low-carbon power may hinge less on grand technological achievements than on which systems are quickly scalable and can survive the tumult of markets, politics, and time on a planet running out of leeway.

Sustainable development is at the forefront of urban, rural, social, agricultural and economic development policies in European countries, out of these areas, agriculture is researched the least as there is currently more focus on central and urban areas.

Salvati and Konaxis present an interdisciplinary and multidimensional examination of the complex evolution of rural systems in advanced economies, and more specifically in Europe and the Mediterranean region, providing an integrated framework approaching environmental problems and socioeconomic issues jointly. Distinctive chapters authored by leading scholars in Europe identify the intrinsic peculiarity of the environmental-economic nexus characteristic of advanced economies and the most important differences with other socioeconomic contexts. Both contributions from a traditional ecological/agronomic vision, and studies having a more strict socio-demographic and economic focus, clarify the role of policies addressing sustainable development goals in the 'kaleidoscopic' rural landscape, confirming the need of place-specific approaches to socio-ecological complexity and the partial effectiveness of generalized, top-down measures.

Against the archetypal vision of economic backwardness of agricultural and forest systems, Transitional Rural Landscapes shows a dynamic image of rural landscapes under the increasing impact of climate change, providing novel interpretations, conceptual definitions, and operational tools designed to reduce ecological fragility and economic vulnerability.

This book tackles a critical question. Why has the world struggled so much to coordinate policy to address climate change, despite political and scientific consensus? Despite landmark agreements and expanding knowledge, emissions have fallen unevenly and progress has repeatedly stalled or reversed.

Democracy or Carbon Oligarchy? explains that failure by focusing on domestic politics: how institutions distribute power, how interest groups exploit "access points," and why countries with similar wealth and technology diverge. Moving beyond arguments about mere political will, it situates energy and climate outcomes within the institutional architectures of industrialized oil super-producers: the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Norway. Shum advances a neopluralist theory of climate politics, arguing that policy is shaped by the strategic capture of institutional venues by carbon-intensive interests. He shows how separation of powers, federalism, party systems, and electoral rules configure opportunities for a de facto carbon oligarchy. By mapping where binding decisions are made and who can reach them, the book offers a generalizable framework for diagnosing blockages, explaining cross-national variation, and identifying leverage points for sustaining ambitious climate policy over time.

In 2021, the London School of Economics found that octopuses are sentient beings, capable of experiencing pain, distress, and happiness, and that high-welfare farming of them would therefore be impossible. But the enormous international demand for octopus meat continues to grow even as wild octopus populations decline, prompting a race to bring the first farm-raised product to market. At the same time, firestorms of protest in Europe and the United States over the ethics of farming such an intelligent creature are pressuring lawmakers to ban the practice altogether.

After working at one of the world's first octopus farms, on the Yucatan Peninsula, award-winning journalist Richard Schweid embarked on a global adventure to explore the ethics and future of octopus aquaculture. He traveled to octopus-farming sites in Mexico, Spain, and Japan where he met people on both sides of the ethical debate: marine biologists, businesspeople, restaurateurs, animal rights advocates, octopus farmers, and everyday fishermen whose livelihoods depend on wild octopus. In this vibrant account of his experiences, Schweid also engages pressing related issues: environmental impact; the need for sustainable farming opportunities in underresourced communities; and how global desires for specific foods place pressure on local populations. Ultimately, the appetite for octopus demonstrates the conundrums of our interconnected world-across countries, through oceans, and via the food we consume.
