In this book, Sumana Chattopadhyay analyzes the US migrant busing crisis of 2022 as a case study to examine ideas of nativism, identity politics, divisive rhetorics, and the red-blue-purple political divide in the context of how these divides are reflected in the media coverage of immigration issues.

Under the US migrant busing phenomenon, migrants, long weaponized as pawns in political debate and policy, were now physically moved like chess pieces to stoke divisive rhetoric about immigration before the 2022 midterm elections and to challenge then-President Joe Biden's record. Chattopadhyay examines coverage of the busing crisis in the New York Times, The Washington Post, and local news outlets from Illinois, Florida, Texas, Utah, Arizona, Georgia, and Wisconsin. Her findings reveal differences across outlets in blue, red, and purple states and emphasize the significant ethical implications of treating people as disposable pieces of a political game.

Ultimately, Chattopadhyay foregrounds the real human beings who have borne the consequences of such political maneuvering to explore the effects of this media coverage on both national and local levels and to illuminate the forces and long-term implications at play in this dynamic.

American Antiblackness: Examining the Fields of Contemporary Racism details how, from its founding, antiblackness has been axiomatic for the United States. The goal of antiblackness is the delegitimization and dehumanization of actual Blackness, from its oral and written resistance narratives to its outstanding works of literature and science, and from its hard-won political achievements to its strivings for greater freedom and social justice. This centuries-long process of delegitimization has racially segregated lives to a much larger extent than is generally acknowledged. This book provides a compelling window into how antiblackness is embedded, reproduced, and challenged in specific US organizations and institutions-including educational systems, sports leagues, STEM fields, and healthcare institutions. Over the years, historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) have played a significant role in the formation of Black identity in a society that struggles to appreciate difference. Drawing on scholars from various disciplinary backgrounds, Anthony B. Pinn and the contributors explore the intersections of race and higher education through the lens of self-awareness and community awareness. The Political Economy of Youth and Migration examines lived experiences to critique how the youth-NGO sector (youth complex) manages the fault lines of global capitalism and limits young peoples' activities.

Since the Arab uprisings and the migration crisis, young MENA refugees are portrayed as both threats to capitalism and valuable resilient workers, revealing mutually interdependent conditions that position them as both a political threat and a potential economic resource. The story of the Black Civil War soldiers who fought for a nation to respect them as fully human

Over 135,000 Black Southerners defended the Union during the Civil War. This book tells the story of these soldiers, who fought their one-time oppressors with grit and gallantry to seize the manhood and honor that was denied them in slavery and to make the South a land of liberty, not bondage.

Jonathan Lande describes a fight that went far beyond the assaults and bayonet charges of the battlefield. While serving the nation as warriors, Black Southerners in Union blue also cared for enslaved and recently emancipated family members struggling to find shelter, food, and warmth. They clashed with irregular fighters on the war's peripheries, chasing Southern guerrillas and liberating captives from slavery. They enforced federal authority on prisoners of war and in Confederate towns. While bivouacked, they took up arms and resisted army officers who treated them as little more than slaves. Amid this civil war within the South, Black soldiers disproved those who dismissed them as unmanly cowards as they fought to recast a republic predicated on inequality and human enslavement.

The first biography of a controversial, iconoclastic architect of Black Studies, from a leading scholar of the Black intellectual tradition

In the 1960s and 1970s, Harold Cruse (1916-2005) was one of the most prominent Black intellectuals in the world, mentioned in the same breath as James Baldwin, Frantz Fanon, and Malcolm X. Today, Cruse is nearly forgotten. In this biography, Vincent W. Lloyd reclaims the story of an influential contrarian, a man who was beloved, feared, hated, reviled, praised.

Cruse grew up poor in Virginia and Harlem, worked as a critic and organizer, and then spent years making his living through manual labor while writing The Crisis of the Negro Intellectual (1967). The book electrified Black America, and the activist who never finished high school became a tenured college professor, a founder of the field of Black Studies, and a mentor to countless student activists. By the 1980s, however, Cruse's distaste for integration, liberal pluralism, and multiculturalism meant that his influential work was fading from view.
