ISBN 978-1-03-294667-2 hard ¥38,461.- (税込) GB£ 135.00

This book provides a comprehensive overview of feminist international relations in South Asia. It highlights the key contentions, debates, and tensions in the field, and studies how the trajectory of feminist international relations in the region has been marked by dialogue, dissidence, and difference with the Global North. In doing so, the volume draws attention to different feminist histories, herstories, and differing ways of knowing, seeing, and doing global politics. It particularly foregrounds a feminist intersectional/ postcolonial lens to a diverse range of issues such as women, peace and the security agenda, populism and nationalism, militarism and militarisation, and underlines the rich textured contours of feminist epistemologies in South Asia.An important contribution, the book will be of great interest to scholars, teachers, and students of feminism, international relations, postcolonialism, women's studies, gender studies, security studies, and South Asian studies.

日本の皇室の女性の生活とイメージ 1868~1952年
Miller, Alison J., Envisioning the Empress: The Lives and Images of Japanese Imperial Women, 1868-1952. (Lives of Royal Women) 240 pp. 2024:12 (Routledge, UK) <733-995>
ISBN 978-1-03-245175-6 hard ¥38,461.- (税込) GB£ 135.00
ISBN 978-1-03-245237-1 paper ¥10,538.- (税込) GB£ 36.99

Envisioning the Empress illuminates dynamic and powerful empresses who impacted not only women in their own time, but whose influence extended to later generations of royalty, creating a greater role for imperial women and elevating the status of women's roles at a crucial juncture in Japanese history. The central focus of this book is visual monarchy, exploring how the empress' biographies were primarily expressed in visual culture, and how their images worked in support of Japan's imperial policies in the late-nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries. The book begins with a brief overview of premodern and modern imperial women to orientate the reader. In each chapter different media, audiences, and distribution channels for constructing the narrative of feminine imperial power in Japan, are addressed alongside biographical information. It is argued that the ultimate purpose of all of these images was to elevate the empress, and promote her image as a conventional role model for modern women, but one with enough celebrity cache to maintain popularity. The images of the modern empresses, as distributed by the Imperial Household Agency, strike a balance between propaganda and popular media, noble philanthropist and upper-middle class role model, celebrity and mother of the nation. The modern empress image was crafted to be both exalted and approachable, and worked to establish individual biographies while simultaneously establishing the position of the empress as timeless in the public eye. Envisioning the Empress introduces students of royal studies, as well as modern Japanese history and art history to this fascinating element of the history of monarchy and women's history more broadly.

Waal, Rodante, Birth Justice: From Obstetric Violence to Abolitionist Care. 508 pp. 2024:10 (Amsterdam U. Pr., NE) <733-390>
ISBN 978-90-485-6239-8 hard ¥42,735.- (税込) GB£ 150.00

Reproductive injustice is an urgent global problem. We are faced with the increased criminalization of abortion, higher maternal and neonatal mortality rates for people of color, and more and more research addressing the structural nature of obstetric violence. In this collection of essays, the cause of reproductive injustice is understood as the institutionalized isolation of (potentially) pregnant people, making them vulnerable for bio- and necropolitical disciplination and control. The central thesis of this book is that reproductive justice must be achieved through a radical reappropriation of relationality in reproductive care to safeguard the access to knowledge and care needed for safe bodily self-determination. Through empirical research as well as decolonial, feminist, midwifery, and Black theory, reproductive justice is reimagined as abolitionist care, grounded in the abolition of authoritative obstetric institutions, state control of reproduction, and restrictive abortion laws in favor of community practices that are truly relational.

Taylor, James, Sexism in the City: Women Stockbrokers in Modern Britain. 320 pp. 2025:3 (Oxford U. Pr., UK) <733-427>
ISBN 978-0-19-887981-7 hard ¥28,205.- (税込) GB£ 99.00

Sexism in the City is the first book to trace the history of women stockbrokers in the United Kingdom from the late nineteenth to the late twentieth centuries. Forgotten pioneers, these businesswomen fought against the odds to establish successful brokerages across the country and in the process, challenged society's beliefs about women and money. The book also tells the story of how the nation's stock exchanges denied them membership for generations, mobilizing increasingly desperate arguments to try to justify their exclusion, until women finally won the right to join the London Stock Exchange in 1973. Though historians have recently reassessed women's role in the development of capitalism, highlighting their roles as investors and entrepreneurs, they have assumed that because women were not members of stock exchanges, they were not active as financial intermediaries until modern times. By spotlighting the lives and careers of women who worked as stockbrokers outside male-monopolized institutions, this book reframes the historical development of finance in several ways. It highlights the extent to which the seemingly gender-neutral institutions and practices of finance were, in fact, based on gendered ideologies and exclusions. It argues that focusing on institutions only reveals part of the financial ecosystem, meaning that we miss what was happening outside the formal market. And it challenges London-centric interpretations of financial history, asking questions about the financial cultures existing outside the metropolis. If we look beyond the official exchanges--and beyond London--a more diverse financial environment comes into view. The history uncovered in Sexism in the City also helps to address problems with financial culture in the twenty-first century. Current reform initiatives are unlikely to succeed unless they acknowledge that for hundreds of years, professional identities and institutional structures in finance have been based on the denigration and marginalization of women. Acknowledging the efforts of those female stockbrokers who challenged misogynistic beliefs and defied men's monopoly of high finance by forging their own careers is the first step towards imagining a different kind of market.

Sustainable development has been recognized as a paradigm for considering a future in which environmental, social, and economic concerns are balanced in the pursuit of improving quality of life. The ideals and principles behind this paradigm are based on the concepts of generational and gender equality, social tolerance, poverty reduction, environmental protection and restoration, natural resource conservation, and the building of fair and peaceful societies. This book identifies and characterizes selected aspects of women's functioning in modern societies, in the context of the goals, assumptions and challenges of sustainable development. It offers an innovative, multidimensional perspective on the potential and role of women in the context of sustainable development. The book is divided into five chapters. The first is dedicated to the role of women in the modern economy and their demographic and social characteristics in the European Union. The second focuses on the role of women in meeting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including the perspective of EU horizontal policies. The third offers an analysis of women's living conditions in the EU, in terms of their social, professional and economic situation and leisure time management. The next chapter considers female entrepreneurship in the EU in terms of social and geopolitical changes, while the final one is devoted to the analysis of the situation of women in selected industry markets. The book summarizes interdisciplinary research questions, focusing on sustainability, gender, human rights and the economy and the trends, tendencies, dependencies and results will be an important source of comparison for academic researchers and a starting point for further in-depth analyses.

In the new edition of this bestselling text and scholarly reference, new and revised chapters reflect shifts in the gendered, classed, racialized and sexualized nature of ongoing global restructurings.Through fresh intersectional feminist analyses of widening health, climate, care, inequality, democracy and knowledge crises since the Great Financial Crisis and the deepening of many forms of capitalism, this volume stresses the complexities of multiple restructurings which demand new ways to think across sightings, sites and resistances. Some of each of these elements are in every chapter, which take the reader to different sightings, such as of neoliberalizations, neoauthoritarianizations, multipolarizations, financializations and migrations. They also bring into view different geographic sites, such as Hong Kong, sub-Saharan and North Africa, Canada, Mexico, Bangladesh and the trade blocs of the European Union and the BRICs, and different non-geographic sites such as productive and reproductive economies and the virtual economy of finance and digitalization. They further highlight different forms of women's and feminist resistance, such as local and national labor organizing, regional and multipolar organizing, reimagining infrastructure design and broadening non-capitalist community and solidarity economies. Many chapters critique problematic constructions of women's empowerment, and all challenge the machinations of neoliberal capital that undermine most women, marginalized peoples and the planet.Providing a coherent and challenging approach to contemporary gendered globalization, better understood as global restructurings, since the last edition over a decade ago, Gender and Global Restructurings will be of interest to students and scholars of IPE, international relations, economics, development and gender studies.

Fortunati, Leopoldina, The Arcana of Reproduction: Housewives, Prostitutes, Workers and Capital. Tr. by A. Austin et al. 368 pp. 2025:2 (Verso, UK) <733-342>
ISBN 978-1-83976-740-1 paper ¥5,694.- (税込) GB£ 19.99

Emerging from the great social upheavals that contested the sexual and racial divisions of labor globally in the 1970s, Leopoldina Fortunati's classic work expands and transforms how we analyze the sphere of reproduction, redefining the value of the individual's life and the labor performed in the home.Released here for the first time in its unabridged form with historical notation and contemporary commentary, The Arcana of Reproduction is a foundational text and essential contribution to today's discussions of social reproduction and the history of Italian feminism. Fortunati's work provides some of the earliest theorizations of 'immaterial,' 'affective,' and 'caring' labor, and of the role of technology in reproduction, articulated decades before their popular reception in English academic literature. Reading this work some 50 years after its original publication gives us the tools to analyze the contemporary state of capitalist development and of women's lives today. The text remains prefigurative and essential in our era of digital labor.

This book explores the seismic shift brought about by the 2022 US Supreme Court decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization, which dramatically changed the constitutional standing of abortion decisions set in place by Roe v. Wade 50 years earlier. The authors describe the history of US Supreme Court's decision-making around abortion and some of its attendant considerations, including the constitutional right to privacy, moral obligations to protect life, and determinations about when life begins. When Dobbs was decided, legal control over abortion was returned to the states, resulting in wildly divergent access to abortion across the nation. As important, Dobbs raised a host of additional legal and moral questions that will no doubt be the focus of many future courtroom and legislative debates. This text is designed for undergraduate students across a range of academic disciplines. It lays bare the complicated moral dimensions of the competing arguments about abortion and how these considerations have fared in legal decisions, so students can make sense of them for themselves.

イングランドにおける女性の平信徒と十字軍 1150~1300年
Reynolds, Gordon M., Laywomen and the Crusade in England, 1150-1300. (Crusading in Context) 242 pp. 2024:11 (Boydell, UK) <733-187>
ISBN 978-1-83765-224-2 hard ¥19,943.- (税込) GB£ 70.00

Considers how elite women could participate in Crusade, their means and motivations. The popular perception of the medieval Crusades is of conflicts spanning from the Holy Land to the Baltic, with huge armies of religious zealots led by knights wearing crosses. However, the reality is far more nuanced. The vast majority of those living in western Europe did not go on crusade at all. But that does not mean that crusading was not on their minds, or that they could not influence the movement. They urged others to take up the cross, provided financial support, and prayed for the campaigns in the Holy Land; for them, this was crusade. This book investigates how English laywomen were encouraged to support crusades and identify with holy war during the Middle Ages, challenging preconceptions of what crusade "meant", and bringing out the diverse ways of their participation. It draws on detailed analysis of cartularies, judicial records, chronicles and lyrical sources; it also examines the rich material culture of commemoration that celebrated the endeavour, alongside the papal propaganda which idealised women's sponsorship of crusade. This study therefore sheds new light not only on the role of women in crusade, but on their influence and piety more generally.

This book delves into the impacts and consequences of the policy of co-residence at the University of Oxford, investigating why and how women were kept at the periphery of the university and how Oxford responded to the growing demand for higher education. The book further examines how the admittance of women into men's colleges and vice versa ultimately shaped the identities of both the university and the student population. The author draws upon identity theory to explain the existence and persistence of single-sex colleges at the University and the theory of social epidemics or cascades is used to explain the rapid embrace of co-residence by the remaining men's colleges after its adoption by the first five men's colleges. In addition, the author uses both quantitative and qualitative approaches to evaluate claims about the impact of co-residence on undergraduate women, women dons, and women's colleges.Unearthing and providing a sustained and in-depth analysis of a quiet, yet revolutionary, undertaking at one of the world's most renowned institutions, it will appeal to scholars, faculty, and upper level students with interests in gender in education, educational inclusion and diversity, history of education, international education, as well as sociology of education and social theory.

Bollen, Alex, Motherdom: Breaking Free of Bad Science and Good Mother Myths. 304 pp. 2025:3 (Verso, UK) <733-1444>
ISBN 978-1-80429-753-7 hard ¥6,267.- (税込) GB£ 22.00

When Alex Bollen had her first baby, the fear of being a bad mother made her guilty and anxious about being a bad mother. A researcher with twenty years' experience, she went looking for answers. To her surprise the studies she looked at were exaggerated and misrepresented in the media, forming the foundation for what she calls Good Mother myths. These myths are an assortment of narratives, ideologies and stereotypes, deployed to censure mothers and blame them for every societal ill.Incensed by the way bad science is used to shame mothers, Alex Bollen decided to set the record straight. With meticulous research and keen insight, Motherdom exposes both the shaky science and unjustified prescriptions about how mothers should 'naturally' behave. Competing visions of birth - 'natural' versus 'medical' - mean women can be criticised whatever happens, raising the odds that birth will be a damaging, even deadly, experience. Mothers are judged and belittled whether they breast- or bottle-feed their babies. Bogus claims about brain development and dodgy attachment theories mean that whatever mothers do, it is never enough. This has to stop. We must replace Good Mother myths with a realistic approach to parenting. Alex Bollen proposes 'motherdom', a more expansive conception of motherhood, which values and respects the different ways people raise their children. Instead of finding fault with mothers, motherdom shifts our focus to the relationships and resources children need to flourish.

ISBN 978-1-66691-522-8 hard ¥22,638.- (税込) US$ 105.00

This powerful last work by pioneering oral historian Fran Leeper Buss examines how painful memories of traumatic experiences can be transformed into positive action for social good. In her more than 40 years gathering the life stories of working-class women, Buss found commonalities in the ways in which her subjects faced structural inequalities of race, class, and gender, as well as sufferings caused by poverty, child abuse, gun violence and war. Some of these women subsequently went on to become participants and leaders in a variety of movements for social change. In this wide-ranging book, Buss shows how her subjects employed storytelling, art, spirituality and other methods to create sense and meaning from traumatic memories and then make positive contributions to movements for labor rights, sanctuary for Central American refugees, gun violence prevention, peace, and other causes. Buss also relates her own story of medical malpractice and disability and discusses the work of historical and contemporary thinkers on the concepts underlying her ideas. She provides unique and original insights into how women who have endured great trauma are able to redeem their memories through communal action for a better world.

ISBN 978-94-6372-729-7 hard ¥33,333.- (税込) GB£ 117.00

Early Modern Maternities in the Iberian Atlantic is the first volume to emphasize women's personal experiences and their life trajectories as mothers within the Peninsula and across the Atlantic. Although an official discourse that defined the conditions of motherhood emerged in the eighteenth century, before this period there were many different articulations of motherhood through which women negotiated hierarchical relationships, power struggles and alliances. While the individual experiences were unique and depended upon the positionality of race and class, the complexities of being a mother were universal. The wide variety of written and visual documents included in this volume highlight women's voices in the first person along with more subtle references to motherhood as well as silences. This collection broadens our understanding of the complexities of motherhood, addressing the pressures of becoming a mother, miscarriage, the acts of giving birth and lactation and the ordeals of raising children.

The chapters are organised in smaller conceptual clusters, offering multiple and overlapping reading paths according to the interests of the reader. A mapping of clusters and potential reading paths is included at the opening of the book, designed for instructors to expand course content. Written to enrich reading for preservice teacher education students and to challenge researchers, postgraduate and doctoral candidates, this book provides essential new perspectives on gender, education, and the various ways in which they are un/bound together and apart.

ジェンダー、記憶、文書文化 900~1300年
Gathagan, Laura L. / Insley, Charles (eds.), Gender, Memory and Documentary Culture, c.900-1300. (Medieval Documentary Cultures) 288 pp. 2025:1 (Boydell, UK) <733-1455>
ISBN 978-1-78327-789-6 hard ¥27,065.- (税込) GB£ 95.00

Considers the role gender played in the production, use and preservation of documents. How was the world of medieval documentation and memory creation affected by gender? This question is central to the essays collected here, which bring together aspects of gender and documentary culture that are usually studied only in isolation. Covering the tenth to the thirteenth centuries, the volume offers a broad geographical reach - England, France, Flanders, Germany, Spain - and an array of sources, from charters, letters and court proceedings to seals, iconography, and illumination. There is a particular focus on lay female communities, including women's collective legal action in pre-Conquest England, documentary initiatives of Castilian peasant widows, and urban Flemish women's sealing practices. Re-examinations of noblewomen's centrality - and erasure - in charters focus on Ermengarde of Brittany, Mathilda of Boulogne and Berengaria of Navarre. Contributions on gender and historical writing explore their development in Ottonian courts, tenth-century English coronation portraits, Orderic Vitalis' Historia Ecclesiastica, and French chroniclers' rhetorical strategies for writing noblewomen's rage. Further chapters consider monastic spaces, including women's houses at Auxerre and Marcigny and at Holy Trinity, Caen, and explore women's memory preservation efforts, at Spanish houses - San Salvador de Ona and Santa Maria de Piasca - and a community at Bouxieres. This volume demonstrates the new insights that can be gleaned by viewing various processes, such as legal disputes and monastic narratives and foundation, through a gendered lens.

Gleeson, Jules Joanne, Hermaphrodite Logic: Intersex Liberation & Escaping the Clinic. 208 pp. 2025:6 (Verso, UK) <733-1457>
ISBN 978-1-83976-093-8 paper ¥4,840.- (税込) GB£ 16.99

When a baby is born whose reproductive organs do not fit neatly into a binary idea of biological sex, they are deemed intersex. Often, doctors and parents decide to do surgery soon after birth, and in many cases administer hormones, to make intersex children fit into male/female categories. Intersex is treated as a medical problem: their physiologies are quickly dismissed as impossible, freakish, or even monstrous.Hermaphrodite Logic places the sexually indeterminate at the centre, for a change. Jules Joanne Gleeson offers a fresh perspective for understanding, speaking of, and celebrating indeterminate lives. Rather than focus on 'ambiguity' (or its still vaguer variant, 'fluidity') Gleeson focuses on indeterminacy-the bodies, sentiments and experiences that can not be folded in two. The indeterminate cannot help but exist between categories. Hermaphrodite Logic foregrounds the experiences of sexually indeterminate figures both current and historical, and seeks to build up a thoroughgoing case for our emancipation.

Goldhill, Simon, Queer Cambridge: An Alternative History. 240 pp. 2024:12 (Cambridge U. Pr., UK) <733-1458>
ISBN 978-1-00-952806-1 hard ¥5,698.- (税込) GB£ 20.00

Queer Cambridge recounts the untold story of a gay community living, for many decades, at the very heart of the British Establishment. Making effective use of chiefly forgotten archival sources - including personal diaries and letters - the author reveals a network that was in equal parts tolerant and acerbic, and within which the queer Fellows of Cambridge University explored bold new forms of camaraderie and relationship. Goldhill examines too the huge influence that these individuals had on British culture, in its arts, politics, music, theatre and self-understanding. During difficult decades when homosexuality was unlawful, gay academics - who included celebrated literary and scientific figures like E. M. Forster, M. R. James, Rupert Brooke and Alan Turing - lived, loved, and grew old together, bringing new generations into their midst. Their remarkable stories add up not just to an alternative history of male homosexuality in Britain, but to an alternative history of Cambridge itself.

Hayward, Maria (ed.), The Material World of a Restoration Queen Consort: The Privy Purse Accounts of Catherine of Braganza. (Publications of the Lincoln Record Society) 540 pp. 2024:11 (Lincoln Record Society, US) <733-1459>
ISBN 978-1-910653-14-2 hard ¥11,396.- (税込) GB£ 40.00

This book provides you with the chance to explore the world of Catherine of Braganza, the Portuguese wife of Charles II, by the means of a full transcript of the surviving four volumes of her privy purse accounts. Kept by the keeper of her privy purse, Barbara, countess of Suffolk, the account books cover the period from the time of Catherine's marriage to the merry monarch in 1662, to Barbara's death in 1680. The accounts offer a glimpse of key events in Charles II's reign including the plague in 1665 and the Great Fire of London in 1666. They also reveal how Catherine, with Barbara's help spent her money. The accounts take us further, offering insights into the women in Catherine's household and her wider social circle, her health, and her itinerary. Her love of flowers and gardens is also revealed, along with her engagement with music, and how ambassadors and the court elite presented her with gifts of food, many of which were intended to remind her of her Portuguese home.

Jeffery, Patricia / Qureshi, Kaveri (eds.), 'Muslim Woman'/Muslim women: Lived Experiences beyond Religion and Gender in South Asia and Its Diasporas. 128 pp. 2024:11 (Routledge, UK) <733-146>
ISBN 978-1-03-287786-0 hard ¥38,461.- (税込) GB£ 135.00

This book addresses South Asian Muslim women's lived experiences, whilst questioning dominant concepts of agency.Negative, homogenising constructions of the 'Muslim Woman' are not the result of a knowledge deficit, but constitutive of Euro-American and Hindu nationalist forms of civilizational self-assurance. Portraying the richness and diversity of Muslim women's voices and agency cannot, therefore, rectify discourses casting Muslim women as invisible or silent, so long as the vision of agency is shackled to dominant feminist precepts. Mindful of this problem, the book examines Muslim women's legal agency with respect to the family, their claims-making upon the state, livelihoods, and the impact of male outmigration on 'left-behind' wives. Working across these domains of everyday life, contributors highlight how women's vulnerabilities within their families dovetail with oppressions experienced in the local state, the labour market, and in the streets. Women's economic locations continue to shape their agency in crucial ways, with upward mobility often entailing greater restrictions on women's mobility and independence; yet the chapters caution against romanticising the ironic independence of poverty. Collectively, this volume showcases Muslim's women's diverse identities and desires that may be sidelined in dominant concepts of agency. This book will be beneficial for scholars and students of South Asian Studies interested in gender justice, politics and the intersection of religion, culture, and identity. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of Contemporary South Asia.

Heller, Serena, A Psychoanalytic Exploration of Female to Male Transition. 208 pp. 2024:12 (Routledge, UK) <733-1460>
ISBN 978-1-03-271857-6 hard ¥37,037.- (税込) GB£ 130.00
ISBN 978-1-03-260342-1 paper ¥8,543.- (税込) GB£ 29.99

Drawing on theory from a range of schools of psychoanalytic thought, this timely book addresses and explores the phenomenon of the increasing number of people who were assigned female at birth and now identify as male, and what might underly the cultural pull to remove femaleness from self and body. In A Psychoanalytic Exploration of Female to Male Transition, Serena Heller considers how early recognition of the difference between the sexes might evoke a melancholic attitude towards one's anatomy, as being one sex and not the other. She considers the ramifications of the developing sexual bodies of young women at a time when they are having great difficulty accepting them, addressing the complexity of female sexual development in relation to sexual aim and object, and how manifestations of early bisexuality can resurface during puberty. Focusing solely on the experience of female-to-male transition, rather than making broad assumptions of a universal trans experience, Heller provides a depth of theoretical analysis of biological and psychic aspects of female sexuality, and transgender identifications. Empathetic in its approach and thorough in its conceptualisation, this volume is a vital resource for psychodynamic and psychoanalytic psychotherapists working directly with trans patients, and with those experiencing gender dysphoria and issues of sexual identity. The book assumes no prior expertise in analytic thought, and is designed to help mental health practitioners, students, and researchers engaged in queer studies, gender studies and the intersection of psychoanalytic thought and gender identity.

ISBN 978-1-83765-011-8 hard ¥27,065.- (税込) GB£ 95.00

Explores the lived experiences of the women of lower deck seamen in the nineteenth century British navy. This book explores the lived experiences of the women - the mothers, sisters, foster-mothers of motherless children, but above all the wives - of lower deck seamen in the nineteenth century British navy. It makes extensive use of the "allotment" scheme, a system which enabled men to convey portions of their pay to dependants at home. The scheme had been devised by a Royal Navy worried by the adverse effect on naval manpower caused by experienced and mature sailors quitting the service in order to support loved ones suffering poverty on shore. Drawing also on civil, parish and local data, the book reveals hitherto unknown differences between naval and civilian patterns of nuptiality, family life, occupation and household structure. It illustrates the impact of naval breadwinners' long-term absence in analyses of local migration, mutual support networks, and clusterings of "same ship" families, and to bring the picture to life it includes microhistories and stories of individual women. The book concludes that while the sailor's woman's "allotted place" in the popular imagination shifted with changing perceptions of sailors' reputation and standing, a constant "otherness" attached to women who chose marriage to long-absent men, and a life of necessary self-reliance.

Jacob, Frank, Emma Goldman: Collected Essays on the Life and Impact of a Transnational Anarchist. V, 134 S. 2024:8 (de Gruyter Oldenbourg, GW) <733-1465>
ISBN 978-3-11-153921-8 hard ¥17,642.- (税込) EUR 74.95 *

Emma Goldman’s life and work offer countless perspectives for study and analysis. As an anarchist activist she always attacked any form of inequality and was a lifelong agent for freedom. Goldman, who lived a transnational life, in her writings and actions offers a kaleidoscopic image of the injustices of her time, while they emphasize her hopes and dreams for a better future at the same time. The present book, which is a collection of essays about this transnational life of an important anarchist, consequently offers a glimpse into Goldman’s personal and political kaleidoscope. It shows how she thought about revolutions in general, and the Russian Revolution in particular, while it also highlights that even an anarchist had to work according to capitalist rules to survive. In addition, Goldman’s activities to criticize gender norms and her perception as a female radical are elements that are discussed as well. The collection thereby offers a critical insight into the many facets of Emma Goldman’s life and impact in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

古代ギリシアにおける結婚式、ジェンダー、パフォーマンス
Karanika, Andromache, Wedding, Gender, and Performance in Ancient Greece. 304 pp. 2024:10 (Oxford U. Pr., UK) <733-1467>
ISBN 978-0-19-888457-6 hard ¥28,205.- (税込) GB£ 99.00 *

Wedding, Gender, and Performance in Ancient Greece traces the wedding song tradition, its imagery, and its tropes as a genre that became crystallized throughout the ages. It explores how wedding poetics permeates ancient Greek literature. It first analyzes how explicit or implicit matrimonial references shape archaic epic diction and become an integral part of epic discourse; orally circulating texts, such as wedding songs, could have a life of their own but, beyond their original context, could also become an integral part of a different genre, especially epic and drama. This author discusses the multiple platforms that enrich the wedding song tradition, including children's songs, hymns, paeans, and ululations, arguing for a combination of ritualized discourse with ludic childhood poetics. With an approach from cognitive and trauma studies, such references can be more revealing of the female experience than previously acknowledged. This book resists the idea that a wedding constitutes an initiation ritual, arguing that what on the surface may seem like a transition to a new phase reveals other underlying trends that work against the concept of a passage. It further considers how emotion is staged and revisits the poetics of return by looking at patterns such as the eloping, returning, failed, and dead bride. Finally, the theme of separation and return as an exemplification of a distinct female nostos is revisited in female-authored poetry, which helps us decode the complex interweaving of wedding performances and lamentation, among other types of performance.

ISBN 978-1-03-249212-4 hard ¥38,461.- (税込) GB£ 135.00

Edinburgh's Unruly Women examines experiences of church discipline across parish communities through Edinburgh and its environs. The book argues that experiences of discipline were not universal, varying according to any number of factors such as age, gender, marital status, and social rank.Adopting a case study approach, the book illuminates the voices of ordinary women as they appeared before their local kirk session (church court) where they navigated the church court system to settle neighbourly disputes, negotiate marriage contracts, or free their husbands from allegations of adultery. Edinburgh's Unruly Women argues that in the context of a deeply patriarchal society, experiences of discipline could not have been universal, but that in creating this strict culture of self-monitoring, the Church created opportunities for women to express power over one another, and indeed, over their male contemporaries.By placing female parishioners at the heart of the book, filled with individual case studies, Edinburgh's Unruly Women appeals to students and scholars of early modern women, religion, and gender more broadly, and to those with more specialist interest in both ecclesiastical discipline and the history of early modern Scotland in the localities.

People with variations of sex characteristics (VSC) are born with chromosomal, gonadal and/or anatomical diversities that do not fit the typical definition of male or female. This book develops a social science of VSC, Intersex, and Disorders of Sex Development (DSD).Issues of bodily autonomy, sex, gender and sexuality are highly topical. Yet, little is heard about people with VSCs, or the unique issues they face. This book is a collaborative project between intersex and endosex (non-intersex) authors that gives uninitiated readers a way into the complex debates surrounding IVSC. It breaks new ground theoretically whilst also presenting novel empirical material from a range of international sources. Issues of power, discrimination, identity, and agency are key to understanding the current situation for people with VSCs.Bridging between intersex studies, medical literatures, and broader social science debates, this text will be of interest to those working in practice and policy positions, as well as students and scholars across a range of disciplines, especially those studying social inequality, embodiment, healthcare, sex and gender, LGBTQ+ issues, disability, globalisation, and political change.

Moran, Megan, Gender and Family Networks in Early Modern Italy. (Gendering the Late Medieval and Early Modern World) 322 pp. 2024:11 (Amsterdam U. Pr., NE) <733-1476>
ISBN 978-94-6298-457-8 hard ¥35,042.- (税込) GB£ 123.00

Women from the Ricasoli and Spinelli families formed a wide variety of social networks within and beyond Florence through their letters as they negotiated interpersonal relationships and lineage concerns to actively contribute to their families in early modern Italy. Women were located at the center of social networks through their work in bridging their natal and marital families, cultivating commercial contacts, negotiating family obligations and the demands of religious institutions, facilitating introductions for family and friends, and forming political patronage ties. This book argues that a network model offers a framework of analysis in which to deconstruct patriarchy as a single system of institutionalized dominance in early modern Italy. Networks account for female agency as an interactive force that shaped the kinships ties, affective relationships, material connections, and political positions of these elite families as women constructed their own narratives and negotiated their own positions in family life.

The under-representation of women in decision-making roles is an issue of pressing national and international significance. Calls are being made for more ethical, careful and connected forms of leadership popularly gendered as female. Concerns are being extended from adult women to girlhood as initiatives encouraging girls to aspire to leadership proliferate. Both political and corporate discourses are coalescing around girls as the potential leaders who can deliver a more equal and secure future. At the same time, traditional media sources represent women leaders in demeaning, diminishing and stereotyped ways, and women leaders are subjected to unprecedented abuse via social media. Leadership itself continues to be characterised as masculine in popular and corporate realms.Concerns about the proportion and visibility of women leaders too often translate into 'role model' solutions for girls based on simplistic ideas of gender-matching. In such solutions the complexities of relationships that young people may have with media figures are reduced to a matter of inspiration leading to imitation; few consider the cultural contexts in which girls encounter leadership figures, the meanings girls attach to them, and how these are embedded in girls' everyday lives and media practices.Drawing on research conducted in schools, youth organisations and online, this book investigates what girls apprehend leadership to mean in their own lives, and in their discussions of popular media representations of women leaders. It seeks to add to understandings of the role of public figures in girls' identities and aspirations, and particularly in shaping their ideas about power, influence and social change.

ジェンダーを教える-イギリスの大学と異性愛の台頭 1860~1939年
Rutherford, Samuel, Teaching Gender: The British University and the Rise of Heterosexuality, 1860-1939. 272 pp. 2025:4 (Oxford U. Pr., UK) <733-1485>
ISBN 978-0-19-893749-4 hard ¥28,205.- (税込) GB£ 99.00

In Britain in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, universities were one of many institutional state structures wherein gender difference, the male breadwinner ideal, and heterosexuality were central to a conception of citizenship. But while the state could enforce these norms through the parameters it set on the extension franchise or the distribution of welfare benefits, individual women and men also played active roles in creating and renegotiating them through the messy interactions of everyday life. Teaching Gender immerses the reader in lecture theatres, University Senate meetings, student unions, nightclubs, and halls of residence to show how individuals' efforts to find workable paradigms for relating to one another across gender lines took shape within specific institutional, political, and financial constraints, and in the context of a historical moment when anxiety accrued around non-normative genders and sexualities as symptomatic of wider social and political instability. Drawing on extensive research in the archives of ten colleges and universities across England and Scotland, Samuel Rutherford shows that the nationalization and centralization of higher education at the turn of the twentieth century resulted incidentally in coeducation, over the protest of feminist activists who supported gender segregation; that students' negotiation of cross-gender interaction in coeducational universities ultimately led them to identify heterosexuality as a seemingly less fraught paradigm than more gender-neutral conceptions of 'corporate life'; and that single-sex men's and women's colleges, though increasingly marginal, became important sites for the theorization of life paths and identities outside the heterosexual norm. Through detailed recovery both of political and financial decision-making and of the experiences and emotions of faculty, students, administrators, donors, and national politicians, Rutherford paints a vivid and resonant picture of the university campus as a key site for the transmission of norms around gender and sexuality.

During the Holocaust, amid death and violence, Jewish men were not mere powerless victims. Linking gender studies with a history of sexuality and emotions will highlight intimate agency, power struggles, negotiations of relationships, social dynamics, and representations of masculinities. Considering the agency and vulnerability will further convey intimate choices, the representation of masculine ideals, intimate violence, and the expression of various emotions such as honour and love. As research on the Holocaust often links women with sexuality or portrays women as gendered beings, it is crucial to excavate the intimate, hidden lives of Jewish men and their specific intimate experiences as men. The analysis not only demonstrates how Jewish men remember and make sense of their experiences, but also how they chose to form the narrative and how they represented their ordeal in four chapters, namely ghettos, concentration camps, Jewish resistance in the countryside, and finally, DP camps in the aftermath of the Holocaust. The consideration of these four spaces allows a nuanced, innovative understanding of the intimate history of Jewish men during the Holocaust, i.e. how some men established male dominated structures and established intimate strategies to find solace and pleasure.

This book explores the adversarial world of feminist activism by Muslim women within highly mediated environments (social media, screenwriting, documentary filmmaking, YouTube), focusing on agency, bodily integrity, and familial obligations. It highlights how adversarial Islamic feminism uses social media to spread intersectional feminist messages, creating virtual communities that both support and challenge these ideas. The book showcases the diversity within Islamic practices and the lived experiences of women beyond the gatekeeping authoritative interpretations of Sunni Islamic theology. It presents adversarial Islamic feminism as existing in a "borderland" between Islam and feminism, questioning and reshaping their confluence. This space allows for a vibrant dialogue that bridges Western and Islamic feminist perspectives, offering a new view on the intersection of these identities.

Popular culture encompasses and draws on a rich history of works by musicians, filmmakers, writers, photographers, and performers who question the contours of traditional sexual and gender identities, including but not limited to members of LGBTQIA* communities. When encountered on the stage or screen, for instance, in the guise of drag performances, forms of sexual ambiguity often spark fascination. Yet in everyday life in various socio-cultural contexts, sexual and bodily difference in all its forms is still met with hostility, rendering vulnerable those human beings that deviate from the white, male, straight, able-bodied norm. Queer artists today respond to social stigma in multiple creative ways, for example, by transforming negative affect, fostering a politics of care, and rewriting history. This volume considers how feminist, queer, and trans* musicians, filmmakers, curators, and performance artists contribute to popular culture. It explores the many ways of relating to difference, however this is conceived, that their contributions enable. What affects do their works engender? How do they rouse their audience, and to what ends? How do they fabricate and circulate provocative messages about new forms of gender, race, class, and desire? What other visions do they inspire?
