Rooted in scholarship on intersectional feminism and drawing on the lived experiences of women of color, this edited volume explores the formation and practice of intersectional community, across varied contexts, as a powerful agent of social change. Chapters focus on conceptualizing women of color sisterhoods as disruptive to dominant white, male narratives of success; re-imagining self-care as acts of collective care; analyzing the dynamic, reciprocal relationships between women of color and their larger communities in terms of space and place; and experiencing sisterhood across and within generations. Incorporating both autoethnography and traditional ethnography, this volume offers unique insights on the practice of intersectional community among women of color.

In the face of heightened transphobia and rising fascism in the United States, Joy Ellison's TheTrans Midwest recounts the history of Midwestern trans women and femmes as a force in the larger feminist movement in the United States. Facing repression and geographic isolation, trans feminine Midwesterners built, and continue to build, vibrant coalitions with feminist, queer, and Black organizations.

Drawing on a vast range of archives and oral histories, Ellison shares a detailed and intersectional description of trans life and politics. These historical figures range from the Black trans women who worked in drag shows to the student coalitions that led to the passage of the country's first trans-inclusive anti-discrimination ordinance and transsexual lesbian feminist activism in the 1990s. Ellison examines community networks and support groups, newsletters and advertisements, and Midwestern cities from Detroit to Kansas City to elucidate how trans regional groups found common interests across different races, classes, abilities, and sexualities, a marked difference from existing historical accounts of similar movements elsewhere.

Freedomways (1961-1985) was one of the most influential Black magazines of the Cold War era, shaping debates on race, socialism, and global liberation. Yet the Black women whose intellectual labor sustained the magazine have remained largely obscured. This book reinterprets Freedomways as a Black feminist project that functioned not only as a publishing venue but as an intellectual home for Black women thinkers. Through editorial leadership, political essays, and cultural criticism, figures such as Esther Cooper Jackson, Shirley Graham Du Bois, and Jean Carey Bond advanced sustained analyses of capitalism, imperialism, gender oppression, and the global Black diaspora.

At its core, Lauren Eglen's book examines intellectual value, historical erasure, and shows how Black women's editorial authority and theoretical contributions were diminished. Despite their central role in shaping the magazine's vision, Black women were often eclipsed by male-centered narratives and by their proximity to prominent Black men. By centering their work, this book challenges conventional assumptions about where political theory is produced and who counts as an intellectual, and it expands Black intellectual history to include editorship, collaboration, and everyday experience. What happens when the West interferes in the sexual politics of nations in the postcolonial Global South

Since the end of the Cold War, many Western nations have increasingly sought to integrate gay rights into their diplomacy, foreign policy, and international development programs. In The Great Refusal, Jason Ferguson examines what happens when pro-gay Western forces intervene in the sexual politics of countries around the world, especially in the postcolonial Global South. He finds that these interventions have unintended consequences, as the global clashes with the local. They create tension and divide nation-states from within, undermine local democratic structures and the collective conscience, and, paradoxically, fan the flames of resentment against the West, against gay rights, and against gay people.

Ferguson's mixed-method and multiscalar account of what he terms the "geopoliticization of homosexuality and gay rights" offers an in-depth analysis of a single case: Senegal, where attempted global intervention exacerbated the very problem it meant to solve. Drawing on a wide range of data, including ethnographies, archival materials, and literature, and moving among global, national, and subnational levels, Ferguson demonstrates how such uninvited interventions ultimately turn homosexuality into a vector through which local populations express their broader resentments against the West. Global interventionism, he argues, has turned same-sex loving people into scapegoats of the twenty-first century.

Navigating Black Joy for Black Women Leaders in Higher Education delves into lived experiences of Black women who resist structural oppression and inequity through the radical act of joy. Pink Triangle Legacies traces the transformation of the pink triangle from a Nazi concentration camp badge and emblem of discrimination into a widespread, recognizable symbol of queer activism, pride, and community. W. Jake Newsome provides an overview of the Nazis' targeted violence against LGBTQ people and details queer survivors' fraught and ongoing fight for the acknowledgement, compensation, and memorialization of LGBTQ victims. Within this context, a new generation of queer activists has used the pink triangle - a reminder of Germany's fascist past - as the visual marker of gay liberation, seeking to end queer people's status as second-class citizens by asserting their right to express their identity openly.

The reclamation of the pink triangle occurred first in West Germany, but soon activists in the United States adopted this chapter from German history as their own. As gay activists on opposite sides of the Atlantic grafted pink triangle memories onto new contexts, they connected two national communities and helped form the basis of a shared gay history, indeed a new gay identity, that transcended national borders.

Pink Triangle Legacies illustrates the dangerous consequences of historical silencing and how the incorporation of hidden histories into the mainstream understanding of the past can contribute to a more inclusive experience of belonging in the present. There can be no justice without acknowledging and remembering injustice. As Newsome demonstrates, if a marginalized community seeks a history that liberates them from the confines of silence, they must often write it themselves.

This book explores how South Africa's histories of colonialism and apartheid, together with cultural and social norms, shape how primary school teachers understand and respond to men's absence and presence in the early years of schooling. It shows that explanations for why men do-or do not-teach young children are not neutral, but are embedded in complex, gendered processes that reflect the country's distinctive socio-political landscape. In doing so, these interpretations often reproduce gendered inequalities that affect male and female teachers as well as the children they teach. Drawing on Southern theories, the book also offers a decolonial framework for researching men and masculinities in the early years, contributing new perspectives to debates about gender, care, and teaching in the Global South.

Specifically, utilizing a close reading methodology employing visual and textual analysis of visual design, narrative role, developer commentary, and player reception, this book provides a thorough critical examination of female monsters such as the succubus, siren, broodmother, banshee, harpy, hag, and crone in several games.Through a focus on the archetypes of "maiden," "mother," and "crone," this work reveals how games promote misogynistic beliefs via the design of female monsters related to sexualization and seduction, maternity and pregnancy, and old age and disability; position transgressive women as enemies to be fought and slain by heterosexual male protagonists; and remediate sexist tropes and assumptions that are deeply embedded in mythology, popular culture, the game industry, and gaming culture. In its exploration of the relationship between technology, difference, gender, and monstrosity, this book contributes to feminist media scholarship by highlighting a key problematic in game design that has remained largely unexplored in scholarly and critical writing.

The life and work of an American Jewish convert to Islam who became a leading voice of the global Islamic Revival, explored through the lens of emotion in transnational religious identity

Maryam Jameelah (1934-2012)-born Margaret Marcus in White Plains, New York-followed an unlikely journey, from comfortable suburban childhood to influential voice of the twentieth-century global Islamic Revival. Jameelah's more than twenty books and pamphlets, translated into a dozen languages, were notable for their unrelenting critique of modernity and arguments for the superiority of Islam in opposition to the West. In this exploration of her life and work, Justine Howe shows how Jameelah harnessed negative emotions-what Howe calls an "antimodern affect"-to call attention to what she saw as the catastrophes wrought by materialism and secularism. For Jameelah, galvanizing these emotions formed the basis of global Muslim solidarity that could be mobilized for a reinvigorated Islamic future.

Tracing Jameelah's successive incarnations-from Reform Jew to highly mobile spiritual seeker and finally to fervent Muslim polemicist-Howe analyzes how women, gender, and family became the central nodes of Jameelah's vision.
