Dating and domestic violence are two the most frequently occurring forms of gender-based violence, both in the United States and globally. A growing body of international law has identified the failure of states to adequately protect people from gender-based violence as a violation of human rights. In order to improve prevention efforts, people must understand the scope, extent, dynamics, and characteristics of dating and domestic violence. Unfortunately, too many people hold dangerous misconceptions about abuse that hinder prevention efforts.

This book is intended to help address misconceptions about dating and domestic violence, thereby helping to inform readers who can and should be involved in prevention practices. The first part of the book shares important information about dating and domestic violence, describing how they are a violation of fundamental human rights as well as reviewing the scope of abuse in the United States and globally, risk and protective factors, characteristics of victims and offenders, the effects of abuse, and barriers to leaving abusers. The second part of the book builds on that foundation to present curricula that can be used in schools and other institutions to teach about abuse, as well as other lesson ideas for various settings. As well, the second part of the book presents a case study of how to build a campus-community collaborative prevention program. In all, the book aims to promote peace in every relationship through a deeper understanding of dating and domestic violence.

This book offers a deeply grounded ethnographic account of the women coal workers in Jharia-known locally as Kamins-whose labor sustains one of India's most hazardous extractive frontiers. Moving beyond narratives of victimhood or romanticized resilience, the study situates their lives within the historical evolution of India's coal economy, from colonial expansion and post-independence nationalization to contemporary regimes of subcontracting, informalization, and ecological degradation. It reveals how women's apparent "disappearance" from formal mining work is not a simple retreat but the outcome of institutional reclassification, managerial practices, and gendered-caste hierarchies that reorganize labor, risk, and recognition in the coal industry. The Kamins' experiences illuminate how extraction is governed through everyday bureaucratic and political mechanisms that are deeply shaped by the intersection of gender, caste, and class, structuring who is seen as a legitimate worker, whose injuries are acknowledged, and whose labor remains invisible. Foregrounding these layered exclusions, the book demonstrates that mining ecologies are not only environmental but also social and institutional terrains where toxicity, precarity, and dispossession are unevenly distributed. Rather than presenting the coalfields as an isolated site of exploitation, the book situates Jharia within broader national and global energy regimes, showing how the demand for cheap coal is sustained through institutionalized invisibility and differential exposure to harm. By centering the knowledge, strategies, and political insights of the Kamins, the study rethinks labor politics in extractive economies and offers a critical account of how survival itself becomes a mode of analysis and resistance. This monograph examines women and girls' experiences of online harms on social media platforms in Australia. Drawing on qualitative survey responses from forty women aged 18-30 and interviews with fifteen subject matter experts, it explores the types of online harms women and girls encounter on social media and the strategies they employ to navigate and respond to abuse. It foregrounds the experiences of women and girls with marginalised identities, demonstrating how ethnicity, age, sexual orientation and disability compound their exposure to identity-based stereotyping, vilification and targeted harassment. It also explores the regulatory, technological and platform governance contexts that facilitate online harms, interrogating the adequacy of existing legislative and platform responses. In doing so, it bridges the gap between academic research, policy and industry, offering a practical framework for understanding and responding to online harms. This book situates the transformation in the world of work and employment relations in Central Asia within broader and uneven processes of labour precarisation in the global political economy during the past decades. Contributions show how a region that has largely remained marginal to the discipline of political economy can inform the theorisation of labour precarity and its gender-differentiated dynamics in rural, urban, and migrant contexts in and beyond the post-socialist world. In The Battle for White Male Supremacy, Mary McThomas sheds new light on the entwined racial and gender ideologies that have come to define large segments of the American Right and are roiling American law and politics. Individual chapters trace the development, ideas, and influence of several key groups: incels, alt-right vigilante groups, Christian nationalists, and men's rights groups at war with the judiciary. While these groups are often treated as discrete phenomena with distinct histories and ostensibly different goals, all share an interconnected belief system of victimhood and embattled white masculinity. By tracking these similarities, McThomas exposes how racial and gendered belief systems are connected both within and across groups.

What is more, McThomas shows that these groups' beliefs and tactics have moved from the extremist fringes of society to the mainstream of American politics. They've gained broad traction in public opinion and political discourse, and they are transforming law and policy at both the state and federal levels.

Why autocratic leaders have adopted gender-equality reforms as a way to legitimize their rule

Authoritarian governments are often seen as attacking gender equality. Vladimir Putin, Viktor Orban, and Recep Tayyip Erdogan have made well-publicized critiques of feminism. But, as Elin Bjarnegard and Paer Zetterberg show in this book, autocratic regimes are also actively adopting gender-equality reforms, surpassing some democracies in their embrace of such policies. Why have leaders of countries known for violating human rights become unlikely champions of gender equality? Bjarnegard and Zetterberg argue that gender serves as a versatile tool for autocrats seeking to legitimize their rule, deflecting attention from authoritarian practices by promoting policies that seem liberal and even democratic. They call this strategy of political misdirection autocratic genderwashing.

Drawing on data from authoritarian governments in countries including Rwanda, Nicaragua, Singapore, and Uganda, Bjarnegard and Zetterberg show how gender equality policies interact with noncoercive authoritarian strategies to claim legitimacy for autocratic rule. They describe autocratic genderwashing as political theater, shining a spotlight on specific reforms and accomplishments-domestic violence legislation, increased numbers of women in parliament, the creation of women's policy agencies-while leaving authoritarian practices in the dark. Considering the question of whether autocratic genderwashing is successful as a legitimation strategy, Bjarnegard and Zetterberg find that it is more convincing to international audiences than to domestic ones.

An eye-opening anthropological examination of masculinity, violence, and transnational migration focused on present-day Punjab.

In Coming of Age in Macholand, the anthropologist and filmmaker Harjant S. Gill shows how Punjabi men in India, disillusioned by promises for power and control, contend with patriarchy: by submitting to it, attempting to transgress it, migrating to escape it, and coming undone by it. Gill takes readers deep inside men's worlds to show how boys come of age and masculinity is produced through pervasive violence, while it is also underlined with intimacy in the form of fraternal love and homosocial bonds.

Based on four years of fieldwork carried out over a decade and hundreds of interviews, Gill explores how boys learn to become men against the backdrop of patriarchal constraints, political violence, changing agrarian economies, and outward migration. He also shows the great extent to which violence is a function and a reflection of powerlessness. By exploring the development of masculinity in a society where sexuality is sanctioned exclusively through heteronormative frameworks of marriage and family, this book documents how patriarchy forecloses sexual agency and emotional autonomy. Ultimately, it offers an indictment of patriarchy as a system that not only oppresses women but also constricts men's intimate and sexual choices.

An innovative examination of how talent, virtue and gendered expectations are negotiated in post-reform China

Under China's one-child policy, a generation of only daughters in the 1980s grew up with unprecedented access to university education and careers in high-paying fields. Often dubbed "little princesses", these brotherless girls had the benefit of parental ambition and family wealth that traditionally went to boys. And yet, as Ye Liu reveals in Only Daughters, this cohort of educated and privileged women did not go on to smash the patriarchy; instead, they were tripped up by cultural expectations. Liu shows that the one-child policy forced these women to grapple with the dual burden of achieving success usually reserved for men while upholding the traditional female virtues. Empowered as girls, as women they struggled to reconcile inherited ideals of filial piety and the state-imposed demographic duty to bear children with their own aspirations for autonomy and success.

Drawing on extensive interviews and observations, Liu traces the life-course transitions of siblingless daughters, aligning them with key phases of China's structural transformation. She shows that the momentum of their girlhood successes collided with a patriarchal backlash, which limited their choices in the labour market, marriage and motherhood. Liu finds that, having abandoned the ideology of meritocracy and acknowledged that the conditions of their empowerment were temporary, these women adopt strategies that blend neoliberal self-reliance with traditional cultural values. With this timely account, Liu sheds new light on the resilience and adaptability of women within patriarchal systems in China and beyond.

What happens when the West interferes in the sexual politics of nations in the postcolonial Global South

Since the end of the Cold War, many Western nations have increasingly sought to integrate gay rights into their diplomacy, foreign policy, and international development programs. In The Great Refusal, Jason Ferguson examines what happens when pro-gay Western forces intervene in the sexual politics of countries around the world, especially in the postcolonial Global South. He finds that these interventions have unintended consequences, as the global clashes with the local. They create tension and divide nation-states from within, undermine local democratic structures and the collective conscience, and, paradoxically, fan the flames of resentment against the West, against gay rights, and against gay people.

Ferguson's mixed-method and multiscalar account of what he terms the "geopoliticization of homosexuality and gay rights" offers an in-depth analysis of a single case: Senegal, where attempted global intervention exacerbated the very problem it meant to solve. Drawing on a wide range of data, including ethnographies, archival materials, and literature, and moving among global, national, and subnational levels, Ferguson demonstrates how such uninvited interventions ultimately turn homosexuality into a vector through which local populations express their broader resentments against the West. Global interventionism, he argues, has turned same-sex loving people into scapegoats of the twenty-first century.
