As screen scholars and practitioners grapple with growing expectations for onscreen diversity, this book examines how such expectations manifest through hidden production processes for queer stories in Australian scripted television.

Through analysis of 18 original interviews with Australian television industry professionals, along with political-economic, content, and textual analysis of queer television content from 2011-2021, this book demonstrates how Australian television's once-pervasive industry perceptions that queer stories would not appeal to broad audiences changed throughout the decade. It traces the lifecycle of scripted television projects across all stages of television production from development to distribution. This book examines how queer representations are negotiated by creatives and executives for distribution through mainstream television networks. While recent Australian hits, such as Heartbreak High (Netflix) and Deadloch (Amazon Prime Video) appear to support the common belief that streaming is driving onscreen diversity, this book reveals how the reality in Australia is much more interesting and complex. With a small and highly regulated television distribution market, a low uptake of cable, and a high proportion of public funding, Australia saw a boom of queer stories appearing in its television drama from 2011, four years before streaming entered the market.

This book is for screen scholars and industry practitioners, alike. It illuminates how Australia's television industry has changed in relation to queer stories appearing onscreen. Screen scholars will gain a deeper understanding of the industrial influences on diverse textual representations. New, emerging and established screen practitioners will develop new insights into how diverse stories are negotiated through the stages of production.

During Russia revolutionary year of 1917, Emmeline Pankhurst and her secretary Jessie Kenney, both well-known suffragettes, traveled to the beleaguered country to talk with Russian women about suffrage, but also to persuade Russia to remain in the war. While there, Pankhurst and Kenney met many leading figures in Russia: Felix Yusupov, the ringleader in the murder of Grigorii Rasputin; members of the Provisional Government, including its president, Alexander Kerensky; and Maria Bochkareva, the commander of the Women's Death Battalion. They spoke with officials from the YMCA and the Red Cross and gave talks to small groups of women in private homes. Throughout, Kenney kept a diary, which she later turned into a manuscript, "The Price of Liberty." This volume introduces Kenney's Russian diary to a general audience, offering a new perspective on the Russian Revolution and facilitating awareness of this unique episode in the story of the British suffrage movement.

This book critically examines the intersection of gender, governance, and urban mobility through the lens of transit systems in postcolonial and developing countries. Drawing on postcolonial feminist and intersectional theories, it analyses how historical legacies, socio-economic structures, and systemic inequalities have shaped the governance and accessibility of urban transit systems, disproportionately marginalising women. It highlights the compounded challenges women encounter in navigating these systems, including safety, affordability, and representation, whilst also identifying opportunities for their empowerment as stakeholders and decision-makers in governance and shareholding. Through examples from Johannesburg, Lagos, Nairobi, and Dar es Salaam in Africa; Lahore, Jakarta, and Delhi in Asia; and Bogota, Santiago, and Curitiba in Latin America, the book offers actionable insights for policymakers and urban planners. It will be of interest to researchers, students, and faculty in interdisciplinary fields such as gender studies, public administration, feminist studies, international relations, and urban planning.

Rejecting uniformity, it embraces the complexity and multiplicity of drag cultures worldwide.

Queer Women's Fandoms: Across Screens, Borders, and Desires brings together new research that rethinks what queer women's fandoms are and why they matter now.

Fan communities where homoeroticism is created by, for, or about women have flourished across streaming platforms, social media, and transnational pop culture. Yet these cultures are still often treated as marginal-or explained through narrow frames that reduce them to national contexts, fixed identities, or supposedly "derivative" forms of fandom. Moving beyond restrictive definitions of both 'queer' and 'female fandom,' the volume offers an innovative framework for understanding fan cultures shaped by globalization, platformized digital life, and shifting LGBTQ+ politics. Drawing on digital media studies, television studies, celebrity and fan studies, visual and sound studies, lesbian and feminist scholarship, queer theory, and globalization studies, contributors trace how images, personas, desires, identities, and subjectivities are produced, negotiated, and contested in and through fandom. Case studies range across television, trans and queer celebrities, K-pop idols, platform influencers, anime productions, and gossip networks. Clear, ambitious, and globally attuned, this collection highlights the complexity of queer women's fandoms today, laying theoretical and analytical grounds for future research.

The book will be an important resource for researchers of gender, media and culture, as well as celebrity and fan studies and digital humanities. It was originally published as a special issue of Popular Communication.

Gloria Steinem: The Unlikely Development of an American Feminist Icon examines how one of the most prominent feminists in the United States emerged from an atypical background to become a defining voice of the Women's Liberation Movement.

Drawing on psychological theories of adult attachment, generation, and feminist identity development, this book analyzes Steinem's unconventional childhood, her early experiences of autonomy, and the societal expectations she resisted as a young adult. Using primary and secondary sources, the book traces how Steinem's rejection of traditional roles positioned her to respond powerfully to a movement that was itself challenging the inevitability of prescribed futures for women. By integrating psychological frameworks with Steinem's lived history, the book illuminates why someone with much to gain from traditional norms instead became a transformative public feminist.

This accessible psychological biography is ideal for undergraduates and postgraduates in psychology, gender studies, politics, and the social sciences, as well as readers interested in feminist history and political socialization.

This new volume presents a more inclusive idea of the family in early modern Britain, foregrounding innovative approaches that have reframed the subject in the past twenty years. With contributions from a new generation of scholars working in collaboration with leading historians, chapters explore previously marginalised or neglected historical subjects. These include the experiences of disabled people, queer families, migrants, religious nonconformists and people of diverse heritage. The pressing concerns of war and empire are discussed, while race and ethnicity are also reconsidered in relation to intersectional dynamics of family membership and experience. Contributors rethink histories of children and religion, apprenticeship and parenting, as well as reflect on recent developments in history, including family emotion and the relationship between the family and environmental change. In early modern Britain, families were embodied and characterised by care, belonging and emotional connection, but also by exclusion and neglect. While some families might embrace change, others acted to conceal secrets or fractured under the strain of disruption.

Safe Schools and Family Values in an Age of Gender Backlash: Queer Stories, Social Reproduction, and Contested Futures examines the backlash against Australia's Safe Schools program through an autotheoretical and Marxist lens, situating international struggles over gender and sexuality as rooted in crises of social reproduction and the defence of the heteronormative family under capitalism.

Readers will gain a rigorous framework for understanding contemporary moral panic and backlash about gender and sexuality as historically grounded struggles over social reproduction rather than isolated political disputes. Through autotheoretical analysis, historical case study, and Marxist theory, the book traces the Safe Schools controversy in Australia from the legacy of Section 28 in the UK to contemporary anti-gender mobilisations, offering conceptual tools for analysing moral panics and the structural necessity of 'defending the family'.

This book is intended for scholars and students in education, gender and sexuality studies, sociology, political theory, and cultural studies, as well as educators, activists, and policy practitioners seeking a structural account of contemporary conflicts over inclusion, schooling, and family life.

The book sheds light on the relationship between human rights and comparative education research, particularly in the context of reproductive healthcare, democracy, and equality. It focuses on the interpretation of human rights and reproductive healthcare globally.

Human rights education is not only about principles and goals. It is also a dialogue about tools and methodologies that can be used to deliver quality and value-added education, which reflects the values of social justice and human rights. It raises strategic questions about where to prioritize efforts: whether we should concentrate on human rights education and reproductive healthcare for legal professionals in developing countries, or perhaps, prioritise community learning or focus on primary school children instead? It also emphasizes the need for effective pedagogy and curriculum design tailored for these diverse contexts.

This book analyses education and policy issues affecting human rights and reproductive healthcare globally. It provides innovative ideas concerning the future directions for teaching human rights, and promotes more engaging and more meaningful knowledge of human rights values and reproductive healthcare globally.

This open access book provides a compelling case study within the field of Peace and Conflict Studies, particularly in the areas of gender, community dynamics, and sustainable peace. Through the analysis of a grassroots platform for reconciliation, this work demonstrates how people-centred approaches that reflect the lived experiences of communities can complement, or even challenge, traditional, top-down models of peacebuilding. The integration of social, psychological, and cultural dimensions into peace efforts is particularly important in contexts where formal peace processes have faltered or failed, highlighting how community-driven initiatives can strengthen resilience and foster long-term stability. This project opens broader avenues for peace researchers to explore the power of local ownership and the potential for grassroots movements to contribute to both national and international peacebuilding efforts. This gender-sensitive analysis invites researchers to rethink the way peace is built, sustained, and experienced at the grassroots level, and underscores the necessity of adopting context-specific approaches to conflict resolution.

This book examines the link between gender equality and corruption in Europe. It argues that corruption is a central element in hampering gender equality development, since in corrupt contexts women are often locked out of positions of power and have fewer opportunities to influence the will of the state. Furthermore, in corrupt contexts, resources intended for the public good are diverted to serve private interests, thereby depriving the state of opportunities to enforce progressive societal change.

In addition to developing a new framework for the study of gender equality development that integrates the role played by corruption, the book also launches the concept of gender-sensitive state power, a notion based on progressive legislation and budget priorities that strengthen women's self-determination, combined with mechanisms that make states stable and ensure that resources do not leak in ways that compromise women's room to manoeuvre in society.

This important book will appeal to all those interested in gender studies, corruption studies, and politics.

Why are BDSM practitioners so happy? It turns out, BDSM isn't just about whips and chains.

With engaging stories and a warm, conversational tone, Bound by BDSM: Unexpected Lessons for Building a Happier Life reveals how BDSM practitioners use clear boundaries, enthusiastic consent, open dialogue, and a strong community to create fulfilling relationships and build richer, more intentional lives. Drawing on research from the largest scientific study of BDSM ever conducted, Alicia Walker and Arielle Kuperberg demonstrate that the BDSM community's approach to trust and vulnerability offers a valuable model for building intimacy and fostering authentic connections. BDSM also allows practitioners to exercise their creativity and break the mold - whether it comes to trying out new practices in the bedroom or bending ideas about gender.

Whether you're vanilla, kinky, or just here for the life advice, this book -packed with humor and insight-is a refreshingly open-minded guide to building stronger relationships, deeper intimacy, and a more intentional approach to connection.

This book critically explores the gendered dynamics within the fashion world, focusing on the intersection of gender, identity, labor practices, media representation, and consumer experiences. It addresses how the fashion industry, long celebrated as a hub of creative expression, also grapples with deep-seated issues, related to gender inequality.

The chapters in this volume investigate critical areas such as gender representation in advertising and media, the role of women in leadership, and the exploitation of labor, particularly within a non-western perspective. The discussion also extends to LGBTQ+ representation, body diversity, ethical practices, and gender biases in fashion entrepreneurship. By focusing on both iconic brands and less-renowned players, the book seeks to understand how gendered identities are constructed, maintained, or challenged within the context of fashion.

In examining gender through multiple lenses-such as leadership, consumer experience, and advocacy-this book aims to empower both industry professionals and scholars to rethink the roles that fashion can play in advancing gender equality. It emphasizes the importance of moving beyond tokenism towards genuinely inclusive practices, encouraging readers to leverage the influence of fashion to create positive social change.

This book offers a pioneering, interdisciplinary analysis of gender-based violence in Eastern Europe from the early modern period to the present. Through case studies of various Eastern European countries, the volume examines how empire, war, nationalism, socialism, and post-socialist transformation shaped legal, medical, and state responses to violence against women. It reveals how women's suffering was repeatedly silenced, normalized, or politicized, particularly in times of conflict and authoritarian rule. Challenging Western-centric perspectives, the book positions Eastern Europe as a vital site for understanding the historical roots of contemporary debates on gender, justice, and memory.

The book examines the experiences of newly economically empowered Afrodescendant Brazilian women as they try to access beauty despite the boundaries of race, class and gender.

It explores the role of the cosmetic surgeon and the patient/consumer in Brazil in relation to the nariz negroide, a commonly used and racialised medical term in Brazilian cosmetic rhinoplasty. Based on ethnographically-informed research conducted from 2017 to 2022, including interviews and social media content analysis, this book examines connections between power and practice as evidenced by cosmetic surgeons in their role as cultural intermediaries, thereby exploring the racialised anomalies and paradoxes that bifurcate Brazilian women's experiences through the racial framing of the practice of rhinoplasty. Given this context, the book gives clear voice to the complex motivations, experiences and outcomes of Afrodescendant Brazilian women as they try to realise the national mantra that "the poor have a right to beauty".

Talking Bodies IV: Rage and Care Against the Machine is a bold intervention against global antifeminism. In these open access contributions, scholars, artists and activists from around the world - with their specific embodied perspectives - expose systems of oppression they come up against with despair, fear, exhaustion and rage. Instead of fixing what's trying to break them, they call out violent norms in order to make them assailable and ultimately overcome them.

Emerging from a global community that first came together at Talking Bodies, an international, interdisciplinary project with a biennial conference, this new volume continues the ethos of this community, striving to improve equality and equity for different bodies, by exploring how we move through and negotiate with the world around us.

The ebook editions of this book are available open access under a CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 licence on bloomsburycollections.com. Open access was funded by the Bloomsbury Open Collections Library Collective.

This book investigates the experiences of women inmates in Alipore Women's Correctional Home and Dum Dum Central Correctional Home in West Bengal, India. It explores their socio-economic background, the major factors that led to their incarceration, the nature of their crimes, the problems that women inmates and their children face inside the correctional homes, and their dealings with the judiciary.

Using a mixed methods framework, this volume helps us to understand how multiple hegemonies can affect the offence done by a particular woman. Through inmate interviews, this book provides a window into their struggles and decisions. The narratives contain rich information on their motives and 'modus operandi' and produce data on how the 'self' is constructed by reflecting upon the complex nature of values, identities, cultures and communities of the inmates. The analytical framework further challenges positivism in contemporary criminology. Advancing feminist criminological agendas, this book aims to help influence the creation and implementation of public policy to improve the conditions of female inmates in correctional homes in countries like India.

This volume illuminates the voices of a diverse group of contemporary feminist scholars from a wide range of religious traditions to demonstrate the value and necessity of feminist contributions to the field of ethics.

Contributors explore questions and debates that have long perplexed religious ethicists, such as the relationship between descriptive ("how do we act?") and normative ("how should we act?") inquiry, and how those can be productively addressed by drawing on resources from feminist work. In addition to contributing to these scholarly conversations, the book highlights a number of case studies from different religious communities on various moral issues to actively demonstrate the ways in which feminist approaches enhance religious ethics' contribution to religious studies, support the decolonization of religious ethics, and provide resources for innovative responses to these contemporary questions and debates.

The themes of solidarity and power and the connecting threads throughout the volume. Historically, solidarity has been an essential aspect of justice-oriented political projects, but feminists' critical attention to power and difference-including attention to who is allowed to speak for/with particular communities-simultaneously raises questions regarding the possibility of genuine solidarity. While religious ethicists have traditionally considered normative work to be a central aspect of the field of religious ethics, other scholars of religion have questioned whether scholarly attempts to forge solidarity and promote justice are themselves inevitably exercises of colonial power and control. The book explores the tensions and debates that arise from these considerations, ultimately suggesting that a feminist ethical approach enables scholarship that accounts for all of these concerns.

Exploring critical issues such as abortion, poverty, the carceral state, war, sexual violence and abuse, race, and social justice movements, this volume provides accessible entry points for advanced undergraduates to contemplate the unique contributions of feminist and womanist scholarship. In addition, scholars, graduate students, and researchers will benefit not only from the book's diverse set of examples, but from the contributors' commitment to intervening in methodological and theoretical debates that continue to challenge thinkers in both religious ethics and the larger field of religious studies.

This book provides an in-depth study of traditional Confucian concepts of women, the emergence of the "New Woman," and contemporary female gender roles in China. Rich and detailed in content, it combines macro-level analysis with specific case studies, tracing the evolution of gender perceptions of women in Chinese society over three millennia while exploring the social ecology of modern Chinese women. Drawing on perspectives from the ancient Chinese classic I Ching (or Yijing), the author delves into the various ritual and ethical constraints imposed on women to consolidate men's dominant social power following the establishment of the patriarchal system. With social development and progress, feminist ideas began to emerge and gain momentum, challenging Confucian gender norms and enabling the expression of women's liberation and self-worth. This has prompted a reexamination of female gender roles. The book offers novel arguments, profound insights, and rigorous analysis, supported by an extensive range of references. It systematically outlines the historical evolution of gender concepts in Chinese society over the past three thousand years and examines the social dynamics shaping contemporary Chinese women. As an academic monograph with a rigorous structure and incisive perspectives, it holds significant scholarly value and practical relevance.

Technofeminist Resistance unveils how feminist resistance is evolving in the digital age, transforming from street protests to viral online movements.

It focuses on how feminist 'artivists' are reshaping technology to challenge gender inequalities, and how feminist groups, especially in Greece and the Global South, are creatively using technology not just as a tool, but as a weapon against the systemic oppressions of the technocolonial world. Moreover, it provides an insight into how technofeminist movements are intertwined globally through shared aesthetics and strategies.

The book illuminates the complex relationship between gender and technology, bringing to light the innovative ways in which feminist principles are being integrated into technological advancements, in the context of activist and artistic practices. With its focus on both local and global views, the book aims to be an essential guide into the ways in which technology, gender, and society are being co-mediated and co-produced.

This book grapples with the many layers of Black girlhood as a source for theological reflection. Doing so gives voice to Black girlhood experiences and disrupts Black girlhood erasure in religion and society. This book also demonstrates how lived experiences of Black girls inform theologies of care, which is important for divinity/seminary faculty and students as well as clergy. Since inception, womanist theology interrogates the social construction of being Black and female and centers these interlocking experiences as a primary source in theological reflection. However, noticeably absent from womanist theology are the actual voices of Black girls. The problems with this exclusion are epistemological and developmental. Epistemologically, Black girls' voices are rarely sought out as a source of knowledge, and developmentally, Black girls appear to be born women.

This book highlights the importance of bridging asexuality competency with queer affirmative care practices in helping professions. It provides a foundational background on asexuality to inform clinical practices. Queer affirmative care embraces and celebrates varying sexuality orientations and gender identities; however, asexuality, as a sexual orientation, is less commonly discussed and understood by affirming practitioners. Information provided in this book closes some gaps in knowledge for clinicians. The book guides the reader through the language in asexual experiences and identities, the unique coming out experiences of asexuals, asexual individuals and relationships, and best clinical practices for working with asexual individuals.

The author presents current research on asexuality and qualitative data compiled independently by the author. This focus on research guides readers through voices, examples, and scenarios that amplify asexual experiences. One major finding that is presented in the book is the author's formation of an asexuality coming out model that highlights uniquenesses in the coming out process that many asexuals experience. The author's professional identity is in the field of marriage and family therapy, so special attention and awareness of couple and family contexts are considered throughout the book. Among the topics covered in the book include:

  • Asexuality: History, Background, and Contemporary Issues
  • A Focus on Language and the Impact of Socially Constructed Messages
  • Asexuality, Intimate Relationships, and Family
  • Asexual Affirmative Care

Asexuality, Relationships, and Identity Formation: Best Practices for Affirmative Care provides a background on asexual identities to inform clinical practice. Individuals in clinical helping settings (e.g., couple and family therapy, social work, and counseling) will appreciate the approach presented in this book that considers clinical directions and case examples as a way to best embrace asexual affirmative care. Additionally, those who work professionally in any care setting with queer individuals will gain further information on this increasingly more visible sub-group of queer individuals. Finally, those who work in queer advocacy, policy, or education also may find the book useful for their work.

This edited volume examines the new reality of women's exclusion from socio-political life in post-socialist states. As right-wing populism rises across the globe, these women who fought for their voting rights for years are once again being squeezed into traditional roles and marginalized in the public space. Chapters address women's exclusion from political leadership, education, scientific development, pay gaps, social security, and healthcare across different post-socialist countries. Through comparative analysis of Poland, Ukraine, Hungary, Slovenia, Czechia, Slovakia, and Belarus, this book not only highlights the convergence of issues but also explores solutions that have been developed in one country and may be implemented elsewhere. This book offers hope and demonstrates how a liberal democracy strengthened through equality and inclusion can counter the rise of neo-conservatism populism. It will be of interest to researchers in gender studies, politics and international relations, and feminist theory.

This book provides a historical and contemporary analysis of queer activism in Iceland, and its historical, political, and cultural context. Starting with the Samtoekin 78, the first gay and lesbian organization in Iceland, and progressing through the year 2000, the authors present the gay liberation movement as an assemblage of diverse and interconnected elements-a framework which transcends identity politics and teleological narratives. Ultimately, Queering Iceland shows how queer activism functions as both public pedagogy, focused on education, and as queer heterotopic space. Using the Icelandic context as a case study, this book gives a nuanced analysis of queer activism in Nordic culture that will be of interest in gender studies, cultural studies, sociology, and modern history.

While public attention has often centered on the most visible and violent expressions of incel ideology, this volume offers a deeper analysis, moving beyond reductive narratives to explore the complex social, psychological, and communicative dimensions of inceldom.
Drawing on expertise from sociology, psychology, communication studies, and conflict resolution, contributors explore the historical development of incel ideology, the formation of incel identity, gendered aspects inceldom, the relationship between involuntary celibacy and violence, and the emergence of femcels and queer incel communities. The volume concludes by exploring avenues for disengagement from incel ideology, while offering concrete proposals for future research into the evolving dynamics of online radicalization and gendered alienation.
