Why are BDSM practitioners so happy? It turns out, BDSM isn't just about whips and chains.

With engaging stories and a warm, conversational tone, Bound by BDSM: Unexpected Lessons for Building a Happier Life reveals how BDSM practitioners use clear boundaries, enthusiastic consent, open dialogue, and a strong community to create fulfilling relationships and build richer, more intentional lives. Drawing on research from the largest scientific study of BDSM ever conducted, Alicia Walker and Arielle Kuperberg demonstrate that the BDSM community's approach to trust and vulnerability offers a valuable model for building intimacy and fostering authentic connections. BDSM also allows practitioners to exercise their creativity and break the mold - whether it comes to trying out new practices in the bedroom or bending ideas about gender.

Whether you're vanilla, kinky, or just here for the life advice, this book -packed with humor and insight-is a refreshingly open-minded guide to building stronger relationships, deeper intimacy, and a more intentional approach to connection.

This book offers a timely and original exploration of how queer humour shapes cultural identity within Taiwan's digital media landscape. Focusing on language, sexuality and performance, it examines humour as a form of resistance, connection and creativity across online queer spaces. Drawing on data from YouTube, Grindr and X/Twitter, it investigates how gay Taiwanese men use humour to negotiate visibility, articulate desire and respond to exclusion. Through drag queens' mediatised interactions, YouTubers' everyday expertise in sex and sexuality, dating app profiles and X/Twitter posts by erotic content creators, humour emerges not merely as entertainment but as a vital sociolinguistic strategy. These playful performances are deeply rooted in local language varieties and actively challenge dominant gender norms and heteronormative expectations. While humour serves as the book's central analytical lens, it also engages a wide range of sociolinguistic phenomena, including narrative construction, indexicality, register variation, metaphor, indirectness, punning, code-mixing, self-deprecation, ironic politeness and stylised registers such as wulitou "nonsense." These strategies are analysed to show how gay Taiwanese men craft voice, negotiate authenticity and build digital intimacy across genres and platforms. In doing so, the book draws on insights from fields including queer linguistics, humour studies, digital discourse analysis and East Asian cultural studies.

This book highlights the importance of bridging asexuality competency with queer affirmative care practices in helping professions. It provides a foundational background on asexuality to inform clinical practices. Queer affirmative care embraces and celebrates varying sexuality orientations and gender identities; however, asexuality, as a sexual orientation, is less commonly discussed and understood by affirming practitioners. Information provided in this book closes some gaps in knowledge for clinicians. The book guides the reader through the language in asexual experiences and identities, the unique coming out experiences of asexuals, asexual individuals and relationships, and best clinical practices for working with asexual individuals.

The author presents current research on asexuality and qualitative data compiled independently by the author. This focus on research guides readers through voices, examples, and scenarios that amplify asexual experiences. One major finding that is presented in the book is the author's formation of an asexuality coming out model that highlights uniquenesses in the coming out process that many asexuals experience. The author's professional identity is in the field of marriage and family therapy, so special attention and awareness of couple and family contexts are considered throughout the book. Among the topics covered in the book include:

  • Asexuality: History, Background, and Contemporary Issues
  • A Focus on Language and the Impact of Socially Constructed Messages
  • Asexuality, Intimate Relationships, and Family
  • Asexual Affirmative Care

Asexuality, Relationships, and Identity Formation: Best Practices for Affirmative Care provides a background on asexual identities to inform clinical practice. Individuals in clinical helping settings (e.g., couple and family therapy, social work, and counseling) will appreciate the approach presented in this book that considers clinical directions and case examples as a way to best embrace asexual affirmative care. Additionally, those who work professionally in any care setting with queer individuals will gain further information on this increasingly more visible sub-group of queer individuals. Finally, those who work in queer advocacy, policy, or education also may find the book useful for their work.

This volume illuminates the voices of a diverse group of contemporary feminist scholars from a wide range of religious traditions to demonstrate the value and necessity of feminist contributions to the field of ethics.

Contributors explore questions and debates that have long perplexed religious ethicists, such as the relationship between descriptive ("how do we act?") and normative ("how should we act?") inquiry, and how those can be productively addressed by drawing on resources from feminist work. In addition to contributing to these scholarly conversations, the book highlights a number of case studies from different religious communities on various moral issues to actively demonstrate the ways in which feminist approaches enhance religious ethics' contribution to religious studies, support the decolonization of religious ethics, and provide resources for innovative responses to these contemporary questions and debates.

The themes of solidarity and power and the connecting threads throughout the volume. Historically, solidarity has been an essential aspect of justice-oriented political projects, but feminists' critical attention to power and difference-including attention to who is allowed to speak for/with particular communities-simultaneously raises questions regarding the possibility of genuine solidarity. While religious ethicists have traditionally considered normative work to be a central aspect of the field of religious ethics, other scholars of religion have questioned whether scholarly attempts to forge solidarity and promote justice are themselves inevitably exercises of colonial power and control. The book explores the tensions and debates that arise from these considerations, ultimately suggesting that a feminist ethical approach enables scholarship that accounts for all of these concerns.

Exploring critical issues such as abortion, poverty, the carceral state, war, sexual violence and abuse, race, and social justice movements, this volume provides accessible entry points for advanced undergraduates to contemplate the unique contributions of feminist and womanist scholarship. In addition, scholars, graduate students, and researchers will benefit not only from the book's diverse set of examples, but from the contributors' commitment to intervening in methodological and theoretical debates that continue to challenge thinkers in both religious ethics and the larger field of religious studies.

This innovative study of material culture demonstrates how, through objects, fabrics and fashion, empire was brought into homes, plantations, and institutions across the British Atlantic world in the period from 1660 to 1820. Beverly Lemire illuminates how the British empire was defined by new material norms, from the soapy world of endless whitewashing to the Black servants who became travelling fashion-makers as they journeyed along imperial networks. A trouser-wearing vogue transformed genteel male attire, sparked by glorification of navy sailors, and dressing up for masquerade balls became a powerful form of hierarchical imperial propaganda. Through this largely bottom-up study, Lemire explores practices from Britain to northern North America, the Caribbean to India, foregrounding the importance this unsettling heritage. Breaking down geographical boundaries, she brings this global history to life through the stories of diverse subaltern populations who have left a vibrant legacy of creativity and resistance.

Women who prepared food for enslaved people, rather than enslavers, have been neglected in historical scholarship. Their labor within the quarters has been marginalized, belittled, and even ignored, because it fell within the remit of gendered care and nurture. In this book, Emily West illustrates how these mostly older women performed vital roles in slaveholding sites, as their enslavers increasingly tried to regulate food distribution, preparation, and consumption. Enslavers attempted to impose highly efficient, communal food regimes to minimize waste and time lost from work elsewhere. They routinely tasked older women with the feeding and care of infants, but also deployed them to prepare food for children and enslaved adults to eat collectively. Conversely, in the relative privacy of the quarters, where enslaved people preferred to eat, cooking became both a form of gendered exploitation, and an expression of love, empowerment, and pleasure.

Technofeminist Resistance unveils how feminist resistance is evolving in the digital age, transforming from street protests to viral online movements.

It focuses on how feminist 'artivists' are reshaping technology to challenge gender inequalities, and how feminist groups, especially in Greece and the Global South, are creatively using technology not just as a tool, but as a weapon against the systemic oppressions of the technocolonial world. Moreover, it provides an insight into how technofeminist movements are intertwined globally through shared aesthetics and strategies.

The book illuminates the complex relationship between gender and technology, bringing to light the innovative ways in which feminist principles are being integrated into technological advancements, in the context of activist and artistic practices. With its focus on both local and global views, the book aims to be an essential guide into the ways in which technology, gender, and society are being co-mediated and co-produced.

This open access book explores the representation and reception of female subjectivity in contemporary Chinese reality dating shows. Conceptualising gender as discursively and performatively constructed, and dating as mediated through the reality television format, it examines how female subjectivity is circumscribed by gender norms, familial relationships, and matchmaking practices. The book further investigates how female audiences actively deconstruct these gendered narratives. Drawing on texts-in-action viewing sessions and interviews with twenty-three young women in China, this study demonstrates how reality dating shows reinforce patriarchal scripts by reinventing traditional matchmaking rituals and inciting women to sustain a postfeminist sensibility that conceals systemic, structural, and taken-for-granted inequalities. The book contributes theoretically and empirically to feminist audience studies, mediated intimacy, and debates on how postfeminism and neoliberalism are lived, experienced, and represented. It is relevant to readers curious about media and gender studies, feminist theory, and East Asian studies.

This edited volume explores the multifaceted dimensions of sexuality and its expressions through a range of social contexts. The authors investigate language(s) and bodies as vessels for research as postulated by carnal sociology (Wacquant, 2005), exploring the intricate relationship between language, sexuality and the mediatisation of the latter (De Ridder, 2017) and focusing on how these elements intertwine to shape our understanding of sexual narratives, sexual health, sex positivity, and sexual identities. Questions raised in this volume include:

  • What are contemporary forms of gatekeeping in translation and ethnographic practices when dealing with sexual content?
  • How does censorship in communication affect the representation of sexualities?
  • How is sexuality presented in translation and ethnographic studies?
  • Which innovative methods are being used in translation and ethnography when studying bodies and Others?

The authors explore how sexuality and desire manifest, along with their potential biases and resulting knowledge gaps, through practical methods, established best practices and lived-experience testimonies from diverse backgrounds. They examine the translation of sexual terms across several loci of expression (e.g. audiovisual translation, literature, digital sexual identities); discriminatory uses of language and censorship; and ethnographic experiences concerning sex, gender, desire and intimacy. This book will be relevant to professionals and researchers in the fields of Translation/Literary Studies and Ethnography/Social Sciences.

Highlighting the vibrancy and courage of women's contributions to the Romantic era's cultural politics, this History explores - from the perspective of women - the period's British incarnations to demonstrate how female accomplishment challenged secondary social status and initiated an early form of feminist protest and gender study. Separate chapters examine the media that women used - including (but not limited to) song, music, needlework, drawing, and empirical experimentation - and the range of venues and locales where they performed their gender identities and cultural assessments. While making space for writers, writing, and textual literacy, the History resists prevalent bias toward these media as agents of social transformation, prioritizing instead collective, improvisatorial, and embodied modes of creativity and protest. Recognizing the contested nature of both 'British Romanticism' and 'women' in today's critical discourse, this major work puts these two constructed entities into dialogue to explore the history and evolution of their creative critical interactions.

This book examines the link between gender equality and corruption in Europe. It argues that corruption is a central element in hampering gender equality development, since in corrupt contexts women are often locked out of positions of power and have fewer opportunities to influence the will of the state. Furthermore, in corrupt contexts, resources intended for the public good are diverted to serve private interests, thereby depriving the state of opportunities to enforce progressive societal change.

In addition to developing a new framework for the study of gender equality development that integrates the role played by corruption, the book also launches the concept of gender-sensitive state power, a notion based on progressive legislation and budget priorities that strengthen women's self-determination, combined with mechanisms that make states stable and ensure that resources do not leak in ways that compromise women's room to manoeuvre in society.

This important book will appeal to all those interested in gender studies, corruption studies, and politics.

Talking Bodies IV: Rage and Care Against the Machine is a bold intervention against global antifeminism. In these open access contributions, scholars, artists and activists from around the world - with their specific embodied perspectives - expose systems of oppression they come up against with despair, fear, exhaustion and rage. Instead of fixing what's trying to break them, they call out violent norms in order to make them assailable and ultimately overcome them.

Emerging from a global community that first came together at Talking Bodies, an international, interdisciplinary project with a biennial conference, this new volume continues the ethos of this community, striving to improve equality and equity for different bodies, by exploring how we move through and negotiate with the world around us.

Crypto, NFTs, meme stocks and other digital currency investments are seen as either a transparent Ponzi scheme or the future of finance. But what all of these new ways of investing - and generally losing - money have in common is that they're almost entirely held by young men. Using survey data and research into cryptocurrency and masculinity, Dan Cassino shows that these novel financial instruments are being embraced less as a way to make money than as a way to shore up threatened masculinities.

Changes in how society sees masculinity, and the impossible standards that men feel they need to attain in order to prove their masculinity, can be seen as 'pushing' men towards all sorts of risky behaviors. Young men have turned to digital investments as a way to demonstrate their manhood to themselves and others, trying to find a short cut to the money and respect they think they deserve, while burning down the structures they think are holding them back. Looking at why they buy these products gives us a glimpse into the online communities these men inhabit, the crisis of masculinity facing young men, and the very real costs these dubious investments have on their lives.

This book provides a historical and contemporary analysis of queer activism in Iceland, and its historical, political, and cultural context. Starting with the Samtoekin 78, the first gay and lesbian organization in Iceland, and progressing through the year 2000, the authors present the gay liberation movement as an assemblage of diverse and interconnected elements-a framework which transcends identity politics and teleological narratives. Ultimately, Queering Iceland shows how queer activism functions as both public pedagogy, focused on education, and as queer heterotopic space. Using the Icelandic context as a case study, this book gives a nuanced analysis of queer activism in Nordic culture that will be of interest in gender studies, cultural studies, sociology, and modern history.

Queer in a Wee Place explores identity, inequality and belonging in animated conversations about how queerness moves through place - and how place, in turn, shapes queer lives.

Building on interdisciplinary sexualities scholarship, activism, creative practices, as well as legislative and cultural critique, this open access book examines the past, present and future imaginings of queerness in Scotland, as a 'wee place'.

With cases covering law, policies, cultural institutions, education, and everyday life, this collection offers an in-depth analysis of Scottish queer experience, showing how 'wee places' reflect and inflect global dynamics - revealing tensions between national pride, visibility and exclusion.

Scotland's national claims about being world-leading in the advancement of LGBTQ+ rights often re-invoke a global hierarchy of places to be queer. The under-resourcing of and backlash against equality, diversity and inclusion initiatives, and colliding legislation such as hate crime laws and the UK Supreme Court ruling, expose a more complicated truth.

This book argues for the positionality of the spirituality of queer Black women through the construction of an ecocosmological spiritual framework.

Conceptualizing the decolonial, Tomeka C. Jacobs travels through space, place, and time to rediscover the parts of queer Black women that have been quieted due to cisheteronormative, patriarchal, hegemonic, misogyny, and misogynoir systems of domination. She reflects on what it means to engage the decolonial through a theological and interdisciplinary lens, which includes epistemology, pedagogy, and ontology. Ecocosmological Spirituality of Southern Queer Black Women: (Re)Membering and Reconnecting Identity serves as a love letter to queer Black women who have often been overlooked in both academic and cultural milieus. Using queer autoethnography and decolonial methods, this book takes the reader on a journey of becoming. Jacobs presents themes of belonging, identity, healing, pain, joy, disconnection, reconnection, and the practice of (re)membering in the ecocosmological sphere. As an art form, she relies on scholars from disciplines beyond the scope of theology to address theological concerns and conscious positioning. This book is a call to unlearn, disconnect, deconstruct, and then (re)member, reconnect, and construct in life-giving, life-affirming, and life-altering ways.

This volume explores the range and richness of sexualities evoked in the biblical texts and their reception history. Contributors utilise theoretical and hermeneutical approaches to engage with different aspects of sexualities in/and the Bible, including the beliefs, behaviours, and bodies that haunt both the texts and their interpretive traditions.

The contributors cover themes that have previously been subject to much debate in biblical scholarship, such as LGBTQI+ identities, heterosexuality, marriage, sexual violence, and circumcision, but it also engages with issues that tend to receive less scholarly attention, including asexuality, homoeroticism, voyeurism, sex work, masturbation, menstruation, pornography, disability, mental health, and reproductive justice. Written from a diversity of disciplinary perspectives, including biblical studies, sexuality studies, theology, religious studies, gender studies, cultural studies, disability studies, psychology and philosophy, each chapter offers fresh, and at times surprising, insights about sexualities in/and the Bible and its reception history.

This book investigates the experiences of women inmates in Alipore Women's Correctional Home and Dum Dum Central Correctional Home in West Bengal, India. It explores their socio-economic background, the major factors that led to their incarceration, the nature of their crimes, the problems that women inmates and their children face inside the correctional homes, and their dealings with the judiciary.

Using a mixed methods framework, this volume helps us to understand how multiple hegemonies can affect the offence done by a particular woman. Through inmate interviews, this book provides a window into their struggles and decisions. The narratives contain rich information on their motives and 'modus operandi' and produce data on how the 'self' is constructed by reflecting upon the complex nature of values, identities, cultures and communities of the inmates. The analytical framework further challenges positivism in contemporary criminology. Advancing feminist criminological agendas, this book aims to help influence the creation and implementation of public policy to improve the conditions of female inmates in correctional homes in countries like India.

This edited volume examines the new reality of women's exclusion from socio-political life in post-socialist states. As right-wing populism rises across the globe, these women who fought for their voting rights for years are once again being squeezed into traditional roles and marginalized in the public space. Chapters address women's exclusion from political leadership, education, scientific development, pay gaps, social security, and healthcare across different post-socialist countries. Through comparative analysis of Poland, Ukraine, Hungary, Slovenia, Czechia, Slovakia, and Belarus, this book not only highlights the convergence of issues but also explores solutions that have been developed in one country and may be implemented elsewhere. This book offers hope and demonstrates how a liberal democracy strengthened through equality and inclusion can counter the rise of neo-conservatism populism. It will be of interest to researchers in gender studies, politics and international relations, and feminist theory.

This book grapples with the many layers of Black girlhood as a source for theological reflection. Doing so gives voice to Black girlhood experiences and disrupts Black girlhood erasure in religion and society. This book also demonstrates how lived experiences of Black girls inform theologies of care, which is important for divinity/seminary faculty and students as well as clergy. Since inception, womanist theology interrogates the social construction of being Black and female and centers these interlocking experiences as a primary source in theological reflection. However, noticeably absent from womanist theology are the actual voices of Black girls. The problems with this exclusion are epistemological and developmental. Epistemologically, Black girls' voices are rarely sought out as a source of knowledge, and developmentally, Black girls appear to be born women.

While public attention has often centered on the most visible and violent expressions of incel ideology, this volume offers a deeper analysis, moving beyond reductive narratives to explore the complex social, psychological, and communicative dimensions of inceldom.
Drawing on expertise from sociology, psychology, communication studies, and conflict resolution, contributors explore the historical development of incel ideology, the formation of incel identity, gendered aspects inceldom, the relationship between involuntary celibacy and violence, and the emergence of femcels and queer incel communities. The volume concludes by exploring avenues for disengagement from incel ideology, while offering concrete proposals for future research into the evolving dynamics of online radicalization and gendered alienation.

This open access book estimates migration and remittances from Odisha and covers various aspects of social and economic development, based on the Odisha Migration Study 2023, a first-of-its-kind survey of 15,000 households and several mixed-methods studies in the state. In Odisha, one of India's poorest states, migration has emerged as a fundamental feature of social and economic life. Yet, little is known about its characteristics, patterns, and processes.

Bringing together a group of multidisciplinary scholars to study a wide range of issues through the lens of migration, this book covers the areas of education, work and employment, livelihoods and income, access to government programmes, housing and amenities, land and asset ownership, food security, women's autonomy and mobility, gender health and well-being, and youth aspirations and attitudes towards agriculture.

As the first comprehensive book on Odisha migration, it is of great interest to scholars and researchers of migration studies, development studies, development economics, sociology, demography, public policy, and South Asian studies. It is also useful to policymakers and civil society organisations.

Women and Politics: The Pursuit of Equality is a comprehensive text examining women's use of politics in pursuit of gender equality. The book is organized around the paradox of gender equality: the need to reconcile demands for equality with biological differences between women and men. Resolving this paradox has proceeded along two paths: the legal equality approach relies on the law to make women and men "the same," while the fairness approach recognizes differences and works to ensure women are not disadvantaged relative to men. The text's in-depth analysis and clear presentation of theory and history lead students to think critically about the challenges faced by women today and in the past. Extensive coverage of diversity among women and consistent attention to the intersections of race, class, gender, sexuality, and gender identity is found throughout the text.
The fully revised fifth edition includes significant updates to the scholarship, including figures and tables, feature boxes, and current challenges to gender equality. The text explores new critical perspectives and recent political events including the 2024 presidential election and Kamala Harris's candidacy, the Dobbs Supreme Court decision overturning 50 years of precedent on abortion rights, the ascendancy of conservative women, Executive Orders defining gender and eliminating DEI initiatives, the wage gap, the fight for paid leave, and women's gains in political representation, employment, education, and the military.
Students are invited to engage with the text through critical thinking and analysis questions related to gender politics and policy in the United States and abroad.

Using public storytelling as driving force, this book explores everyday social moralities relating to stories of sex, crime, violence, and nightlife in the 1920s city space. Focusing on capitalist New York, communist Odessa, and colonial Bombay, Mark D. Steinberg taps in to the global dimension of complex everyday moral anxiety that was prevalent in a vital and troubled decade.

Moral Storytelling in 1920s New York, Odessa, and Bombay compares and connects stories of the street in three compelling cosmopolitan port cities. It offers novel insights into significant and varied areas of study, including city life, sex, prostitution, jazz, dancing, gangsters, criminal undergrounds, cinema, ethnic and racial experiences and conflicts, prohibition and drinking, street violence, 'hooliganism' and other forms of 'deviance' in the contexts of capitalism, colonialism, communism, and nationalism.

The book tells the stories of moralizers: empowered and insistent critics of deviance driven to investigate, interpret, and interfere with how people lived and played. Beside them, not always comfortably, were the policemen and journalists who enforced and documented these efforts. It also reveals the histories of women and men, mostly working class and young, who were observed and categorized: those judged to be wayward, disreputable, disorderly, debauched, and wild. Steinberg explores this global culture war and the everyday moral improvisations-shaped by experiences of class, generation, gender, ethnicity, and race-that came with it.

A novel theoretical development of the combination of insights into feminist theory and postphenomenology.

While there has been growing interest in feminist theory within the philosophy of technology, there remains a lack of works dedicated to this focus. There has been greater success in integrating a focus on issues of gender feminist studies in the related (and larger) fields of philosophy of science and STS. The interdisciplinary and pluralistic nature of postphenomenology contributes to what appears to be, at least informally, a greater focus on gender diversity and greater interest in feminist theory within the postphenomenological community. This volume aims to fill these gaps within the philosophy of technology. The featured chapters include a number of feminist perspectives, including care ethics, feminist standpoint theory, black feminism, and feminist new materialism.

A fresh look at the legacy of Sandra Day O'Connor from hardscrabble childhood in the Arizona desert, to facing adversity as a female in politics, to her work as the first woman Justice on the US Supreme Court.

By being the first woman on the Supreme Court, O'Connor set the stage for future gender equity in America's legal system, becoming one of the most significant people in US history. This accessible analysis of O'Connor's life, examines how her early beginnings in the remote desert of the American Southwest, where her family's ranch was 32 miles from the nearest school, shaped her world view and in turn, decisions at the US Supreme Court that affect us today. At first, she aspired to be a cattle rancher, but instead, went on to enroll at California's Stanford University at the age 16. This biography follows her determination as she overcame prejudice and made history by being appointed to the US Supreme Court in 1981; and it places O'Connor in the context of her times by examining how her decisions on the Supreme Court helped to move the country forward and continue to impact us today.
