How can we achieve lasting social and political equality for women? Leda Perez tackles this thorny question in Searching for Democracy by interrogating egalitarianism in Latin America, where nearly 20% of women work in domestic service. She examines how women's participation in society, labor, and politics continues to be conditioned by their relationship to domestic and care work.

Perez argues that women's relationship to these spheres of life is indicative of a nation's development and democracy. How Women Win Presidential Elections in Latin America explains the factors, strategies, and perceptions that help (or hinder) women to democratically access their country's highest political office. Catherine Reyes-Housholder introduces a theory of gendered incentives and perceived potential to reveal why a political party would break with tradition and nominate a woman. She also shows how citizens respond when women candidates are running in incumbent parties or competing to displace those in power.

Drawing on comparative research on the presidency and gender, How Women Win Presidential Elections in Latin America examines the successful campaigns of Michelle Bachelet in Chile and Dilma Rousseff in Brazil, as well as why Blanca Ovelar lost her presidential race in Paraguay. Drawing on new interviews and previously underused archival material, this book explores women's anti-apartheid activism in South Africa and within broader transnational networks from 1952 to 1962 through a comparison of the Federation of South African Women (FEDSAW) and the Black Sash.

This translation of Pauline Tarnowsky's Les Femmes Homicides presents an important historical work in English for the first time. Tarnowsky, a neuropathologist and one of the first women permitted to attend medical school in Russia, has often been referred to as the "first female criminologist." In Les Femmes Homicides, she analyzes data collected from a sample primarily composed of rural peasant women, 160 convicted of homicide and a control group of 150 non-criminal women, to examine the relative influence of the "born criminal" theory often associated with Cesare Lombroso, heredity, and the social contexts experienced by women convicted of homicide.

Part I of the text outlines Tarnowsky's methodology and introduces some of the first motivational categories for women's homicidal behavior. Part II expands on these categories and further explores the relative importance of causal factors related to biology and social conditions. Her meticulous methodological attention to the intersections of race, environment, time, place, unity, and other social conditions makes this one of the earliest, and still one of the most comprehensive, studies of female homicide offenders.

Tarnowsky draws comparisons between carefully matched criminal and non-criminal populations and employs what we would now recognize as social-scientific reasoning to study and explain homicides committed by women. Ultimately, she challenges and rejects Lombroso's theory of "born criminals." Anti-biopolitics of Security: Gender-based Violence in Mexico concerns a politics of life and security in contemporary Mexico. It plots the formation of a violent event, how its deadly circulations strike the body and how the subject emerges amid these connectivities at once corporeal and material.

The book maintains that a politics of life and security takes a wrong turn when concerned only with how government extracts meaning from an event, with how it locates bodies in security technologies and with how it evaluates subjects against the requirements of rule. An anti-biopolitics of security reworks these connections. The violent event is not the basis from which to define a population, through which acceptable levels of violence and crime are deciphered. No. It is lived. Focusing on gender-based violence, Anti-biopolitics of Security maintains that the materiality of an event is what strikes the feminized body. Sexual violence in conflict, often referred to as conflict-related sexual violence (CRSV), refers to some form of sexual and/or reproductive violence perpetrated against women, men, girls, and boys that is directly or indirectly related to the conflict. This includes rape, sexual slavery, forced prostitution, forced pregnancy, forced abortion, enforced sterilisation, forced marriage, and any other form of sexual and/or reproductive violence of comparable gravity. The perpetrators of CRSV vary between each case and include state and non-state armed groups, including terrorist organisations. This manuscript examines some of the recent manifestations of sexual and/or reproductive violence as atrocity crimes, and especially, prohibited acts to bring about genocide, the responses to these crimes, and issues that continue to be neglected, including in relation to the duty to prevent. The work structures the discussion around the prevalence of CRSV, its use as a tool of genocide, and other international crimes, and the failures of legal and institutional responses. By combining thematic chapters on international law and accountability with case studies, the study provides a balance between theoretical critique and empirical analysis. Feminist Antisemitism: An Intellectual History establishes the antipathy toward Jews that existed as the movement began and tracks how changes in feminist in-groups and theories manifested in new, feminist-inflected forms of antisemitic thinking.

Muslim women have remained sidelined in the post-Partitioned public sphere in India. To overcome the marginality of voice and visibility, they have travelled from the private world to the public sphere; they have crossed several milestones-tin talaq (arbitrary divorce), polygamy, the burqa (veil) and Muslim personal law reform. These discursive pillars have recurrently defined and redefined their identity. This book discusses the growing influence of communalisation of Hindu-Muslim relations in India and how it has affected Muslim women's negotiation and engagement with the public sphere, including professional spaces, marketplaces, universities, literary creations, the burqa and public mobilisation.

It addresses 'the ways' Muslim women have been negotiating through this changing public sphere in West Bengal and predominantly in Kolkata. The conceptual and methodological frameworks of the book look at the lived experiences and subjectivities of Muslim women in these changing spaces and contexts.
