The book follows more than thirty grassroots Syrian women leaders in the process of collective learning and organizing while in exile in the Bekaa Valley, Lebanon. It presents the pedagogical approach developed by Syrian activists. What did Darwin and Linnaeus really think about sex? A woman miscarries-and is charged with murder. A new mother tests positive for a drug her hospital administered-and loses custody of her newborn. Four women are convicted of horrific crimes against children they never touched, based on junk science and homophobia-and spend nearly twenty years in prison before being exonerated. A queer teenager takes a photo of a child's diaper rash at work-and is sentenced to 126 years. These cases are not aberrations. They are symptoms of a system that punishes women and queer people not for what they have done, but for who they are.

In the United States, nearly three-quarters of all wrongly convicted women were convicted of crimes that never occurred at all. This book showcases the work of Annapurna Pariwar, an NGO comprising six organizations, over the past 30 years and its impact on changing the lives of low-income working women with small businesses in the slums of Mumbai and Pune in the Indian state of Maharashtra. This group of six organizations together forms a social enterprise, established at a time of major changes in the Indian economy in the form of globalization and urbanization. The NGO set out to address issues of livelihood and poverty alleviation in slums. Adopting a path that was sustainable and did not depend upon grants, the journey is a fascinating account of learnings in organizational evolution and its impact on the lives of poor women.

The book is divided into two parts. The first part has three chapters charting the journey of Annapurna Pariwar based on interviews with Medha Tai, the founder of Annapurna Pariwar. These chapters discuss milestones, organizational evolution, and challenges, especially demonetization and COVID-19. The lifecycle of the organization and of the women in the case studies are juxtaposed within the framework of financial, physical, sociocultural, and political spaces. The second part of the book contains analyses from well-known authors and academics who contextualize the relevance of Annapurna Pariwar's work and future against microfinance, microinsurance, plus services, social entrepreneurship, digitization, and urban landscapes. This book discusses a new theoretical understanding of gender-based discrimination. It introduces the concept of quietism- a form of discrimination that occurs in the workplace using gendered norms and values. Drawing on a sample of twenty-five Black disabled women in England with the genetically inherited condition of sickle cell, it uses a materialist feminist disability studies perspective and critical race theory to explore identity-based discrimination in work environments. Comprehensive yet accessible, this short volume explains how intersectionalities of identities become implicated in discriminations in: pregnancy, maternity and caring penalties; visible racisms; gendered access to the labour market and workplace norms; and even in the invisible anticipatory actions to be able to stay well and in employment.

In the wake of unprecedented societal and political backlash manifesting in an online and offline hate speech, Lebanese LGBTQI individuals and organisations have used social media to counter LGBTQI-phobia. Addressing a gap in research on LGBTQI social media activism in Lebanon, Antoine Badaoui draws attention to the social media affordances of visibility and association in the work of non-profit organisations.

Investigating how these affordances of social media shape the use of said platforms, and are crucial to understanding LGBTQI behaviour online, Badaoui shows how in Lebanon LGBTQI individuals use social media to network with like-minded people and acquire knowledge away from offline LGBTQI-phobia. Employing rich qualitative research, the book tells the story of how Lebanese LGBTQI non-profits leverage the affordances of visibility and association to foreground sexual minorities' rights in a LGBTQI-phobic society. Questioning whether the organisations' online strategies meet the needs of LGBTQI individuals, the author shows how the organisations are mindful of the sexual minorities' individual safety, adopting a 'collective visibility/individual invisibility' social media strategy to advocate for the sexual minorities' wellbeing without jeopardising their safety. Addressing themes of 'counter-surveillance' and 'counter-invisibility' to challenge the hegemonic socio-political structures that have long put these individuals under scrutiny, the study also brings to life how Lebanese organisations engage with both LGBTQI transnational and regional activisms.

Providing knowledge on sexual minorities' social media activism beyond the Euro-American digital realm, this text is valuable for researchers, students, and LGBTQI non-profits and activists working in the Arab world and in similar LGBTQI-phobic contexts.

This book is a sociological exploration of gender beliefs and capabilities of Malaysian Tamil women who are members of a community that have struggled with marginalisation and inequality. The work is a response to the scant impact of policies, programmes and assistance for this group, by the government, non-governmental agencies, and policymakers.

In doing so, the book asks the following questions: (1) who are the Malaysian Tamil women, (2) do gender belief systems impose various barriers and limitations upon development and further impoverished communities, (3) how do their beliefs impact their capabilities, and (4) are there socioeconomic group differences. Based on the narratives compiled from two different socioeconomic groups from the author's fieldwork, the book shows how belief systems can be empowering, as well as disempowering.

Many arguments have been made for the continued good work of all-girls' schools: they prepare girls well for success in college and career, helping them be better students, better leaders, and more assertive citizens. All-girls' Catholic schools offer something more: a rationale that is rooted in the theological commitments of the Roman Catholic Church. Indeed, in a contemporary culture that routinely marginalizes adolescent girls and holds them to unattainable expectations, the Church and its theologians and religious educators - because of their commitment to human dignity and flourishing - must advance a theological anthropology that centers adolescent girls. This theological anthropology of female adolescent flourishing then provides both a rationale for the Church's continued support of all-girls' Catholic schools and a vision for the mission of these schools as they advocate for the girls they serve. All-girls' schools, therefore, can be places where the commitment to the flourishing of girls is prioritized and where the toxic milieu of contemporary culture can be resisted.
