Why are the planets named after gods? Why did Buzz Aldrin take communion on the lunar surface? And why did Soviet propaganda posters triumphantly declare that cosmonauts found no god in heaven?

Cosmic Missions reveals the deep yet unacknowledged relationships between religion and the exploration of outer space. Bringing together cosmologists, historians, theologians, philosophers, the Vatican Astronomer, an Afrofuturist, and an Indigenous geographer, this book uncovers how space exploration has never been the purely technical and scientific enterprise we imagine it to be. As with politics and economics, religion operates within and across every dimension of our cosmic ambitions, shaping the stories that motivate them, the values that direct them, and the ethical questions they raise.

The book's twenty contributors examine these entanglements across numerous national contexts, a wide variety of religious traditions, and the new techno-utopian movements of Silicon Valley. Chapters range from the Cold War space race as rival salvation projects to feminist Islamic ethics of outer space, and from the spiritual history of UFO encounters to Buddhist arguments for and against leaving Earth.

As humanity accelerates into what some are calling a "new golden age" of space exploration, Cosmic Missions argues that it is vital to understand which values are steering us toward the stars and whom those values serve.

This open access book is self-standing as the only substantive anthology of writings centered on John Dupre's work. Dupre is internationally regarded as one of the most prominent living philosophers of science. His work has had a profound impact on philosophy and biology over the last half century. From fundamental questions about classification to metaphysical debates about the nature of organisms and life, Dupre's writings have changed how scholars look at the life sciences and the natural world. But it is not just his published output that has re-shaped the field. It is also his philosophical methodology, characterised by a naturalistic and interdisciplinary approach. In part this approach was shaped by Dupre's interactions with natural and social scientists, an aspect of his approach to philosophy that is also reflected in his role as a co-founder and then Director of the Egenis Centre for the Study of Life Sciences. This book, edited and authored by many of the world's leading philosophers of the life sciences provides a key text on the interdisciplinary study of the life sciences with a particular emphasis on philosophy. It is of interest to philosophers of science and forms a methodological reference point for students in this field.

This book argues that while the interwar period is generally seen as a period of Evangelical withdrawal from American public life, Evangelical leaders of varying sub-groups remained acutely aware of foreign affairs, speaking on US foreign affairs to large groups of congregants and beyond. Contributing to the spread of themes that emerged during this era regarding concerns of anti-Semitism, skepticism of the League of Nations, and preoccupation on biblical prophecy seen in current events. Schwarzwalder analyzes the theological, sectarian, and political views of Evangelical leaders during this time.

Engages with the life and ideas of the twelfth-century Shaiva mystic and philosopher-poet Allama Prabhu.

In his last, profoundly innovative work, D. R. Nagaraj (1954-1998) engages with the twelfth-century Shaiva mystic and philosopher-poet Allama Prabhu, whose enigmatic writings have perplexed many and thus resisted analysis. Nagaraj situates Allama in three intellectual contexts: the medieval philosophical world built around the worship of Shiva; the pan-Indian bhakti tradition; and, most broadly, Indian mystical thought. This framework enables a reconstruction of Allama through the poet's engagement with fellow poet-spiritualists (vachanakaras) such as Basava, as well as with the Kashmiri Shaiva philosopher Abhinavagupta and the founder of Hindu monasticism Gorakhnath. Nagaraj's close readings of Allama's vachanas offer a vision of Shaiva bhakti that seems to contradict the erotic and romantic expressive modes of Sringara rasa while tracing the limits of language for an understanding of the divine. Allama, Nagaraj suggests, is an epistemological iconoclast who expands the horizons of language and thought.

Through these explorations, Nagaraj decolonizes the standard modes of inquiry and critiques certain settled notions in Indian philosophy, revealing himself as a postcolonial scholar whose "hermeneutics of suspicion" leads to a novel understanding of Indian texts and traditions. Unifying literary criticism with critical theory, philosophical inquiry, and the history of ideas, the book's focus on a specific religious tradition-Virashaivism-is never singular, making it as much a work for scholars of Indian spiritualism and religious thought as for those interested in frameworks that transgress Eurocentricism. Translated into English by Kannada philosopher N. S. Gundur, this is a major contribution to studies of Indian philosophy and literature.

At the time of the conquest of Mexico, the anonymous authors of the Anales de Tlatelolco (1560s) recorded the deaths of two Mexica ritual specialists. During the tumultuous events of the times, Quauhnocthli (a telpochcalli specialist) and Quauhcoatl (a calmecac specialist) died protecting the temple of Huitzilopochtli and his bundled embodiement in the neighborhood of Huitznahuac.

Scholar Josefrayn Sanchez-Perry reconstructs the lives and labors of the two specialists, articulated through Nahuatl-language texts, material culture from neighborhood and temple spaces, and the academic study of religion. The book expands on known theories on Mexica ritual specialists by providing new insights about telpochcalli and calmecac duties, their interrelated educational models, and the collective practices that brought people, animals, flora, specialists, and teteo (more-than-human forces) together. The book demonstrates that telpochcalli and calmecac specialists shared the ritual responsibilities of collective and elective practices.

Giving care to teteo, giving life, and giving offerings were balanced with giving war, giving council, and giving music and dance. As Quauhnochtli and Quauhcoatl ensured the safety of the bundled Huitzilopochtli, they characterized how a Mexica ritual specialist lived and what they did.

This book by the leading political thinker and philosopher Sueli Carneiro examines how race operates in Brazilian society and why myths of racial democracy have so much staying power in the country despite the many ideological and cultural shifts. To understand this, Carneiro develops Foucault's concepts of biopower and dispositif and links them with Charles Mills' writings on the racial contract, creating the concept of 'dispositif of raciality'. Carneiro argues that the dispositif of raciality operates through, on the one hand, 'epistemicide', the process through which Black people are invalidated as knowing subjects, and, on the other, through a complicity among white people in relation to the social subordination and elimination of Black people.

As with all dispositives, however, the dispositif of raciality possesses its own resistance, and Carneiro also addresses Black resistance, understood through the voices and testimonies of insurgents against subordination and epistemicide. Their words reveal that it is from the strength of self-esteem, the recognition of their own autonomy and the triumph of memory and collective action that the sap of resistance is extracted. It is only through collective struggle, where the care of self and of others becomes emancipatory, that the dispositif of raciality can be confronted.

Hailed as one of the most important works of political philosophy written in Brazil, this book sheds new light on the mechanisms through racial regimes reproduce themselves amd how these patterns might be broken. It will be of great value to students and scholars of Brazil, Latin America and Black Studies and it will appeal to anyone interested in questions of race, racism and the legacies of colonialism.

Recent years have witnessed rapid and ongoing growth of technologies that combine neuroscience with artificial intelligence to gather information about human brain activity, modify brain functions, and connect individuals' brains to computers and other brains. While these technologies are said to promise great benefits, they also raise serious concerns, including: their impact on identity and moral agency; mental privacy; the ethics of enhancement; and the potential for bias and discrimination. This Element explores these ethical concerns from a Protestant theological perspective, framed by the question: How can Christians promote the common good in relation to neurotechnologies?

Leo Tolstoy had a deep and long-lasting interest in Plato. This study looks at the way some particularly well-known Platonic themes can be found in War and Peace and Anna Karenina. The themes in question include the journey between the mundane and the eternal (most famously represented in the allegory of the cave), the theory of recollection, and the need to purify the soul of bodily passions. The study begins with an account of Tolstoy's interest in Plato and an overview of the three central themes as they appear in the Phaedo, Republic, Symposium and Phaedrus. It then turns to specific episodes in War and Peace and Anna Karenina where a central character experiences an epiphany or a similar process of inspiration. Cathartic in nature, these episodes show the character rising from a mundane level of experience towards an entirely new level, variously described as infinite, eternal or divine.

A unique interpretation of Plato's account of moderation and the contemporary relevance of Plato's ethical thought.

Sophrosune is one of the four moral virtues-along with wisdom, courage, and justice-that Plato discusses most frequently, though it is perhaps the most difficult one for modern readers to understand. While this Greek term is often translated as "moderation," it is widely acknowledged that English does not have a suitable match for it. This book interprets Plato's masterful reflections on sophrosune in two of his dialogues, Gorgias and Phaedrus. Author Kristian Sheeley demonstrates that Plato depicts Socrates customizing his accounts of sophrosune for the sake of motivating his interlocutors to cultivate it in their own souls. By depicting Socrates attempting to turn his interlocutors toward the pursuit of virtue, Plato aims to make a similar impact on his readers. In addition, the book periodically reflects on the contemporary relevance of Plato's ethical discussions as they pertain to fundamental philosophical problems that continue to confront us today. Plato's writings on sophrosune and related issues contain powerful insights that offer us invaluable guidance.

Sri Lanka in 1915 was rife with tensions in response to colonialism, ethnic assertion, migration, economic change, and religious revival. The island was also part of an Indian Ocean theatre of the First World War that saw action and intrigue. Against that backdrop erupted the 1915 anti-Moor pogrom, the scale and intensity of which was unprecedented. 1915 often serves as a reminder that communal violence in Sri Lanka did not emerge after Independence in 1948; instead, it has deeper roots within the colonial period. Yet, the narrative that 1915 was the beginning of such violence can also be misleading. 1915 did not mark the beginning of Sinhalese-Moor conflict, but was, in fact, the culmination of recurrent violence between the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. How should we understand the significance of the attacks against Moors in 1915? This book re-opens a neglected chapter in Sri Lanka's history by critically re-examining the deeper roots of ethno-religious violence between Sinhalese and Moors. It explores the role of colonial discourse and policies on public order and trade in bringing ethno-religious groups into conflict with each other, while analysing the impact of Buddhist and Islamic revival on group assertion. Sinhalese and Moors are not flattened to victims or passive subjects of colonial rule. Instead, the book explores their agency and processes of identity formation, and their ability to negotiate with a powerful colonial state. Meanwhile, the book situates Sri Lanka in the First World War, and explores how pressures and assumptions flowing from the global context of the War impacted the colonial state's response to the pogrom, shifting it from initial inaction to eventual excess.

When everyone can make themselves heard, who cares to listen? How can we learn to pay attention without simply waiting for our turn to speak? What does it truly mean to be a good listener?

Miriam Rasch offers a philosophical and personal exploration of the ethics of listening, understanding it not as a passive act but as a relationship between the self and the world. This relationship is always mediated-by technologies such as algorithms and social media, by techniques like dialogue and attention, and by our bodies and surroundings.

Rasch investigates listening in different settings across four chapters. The first explores the effects of technology, the second examines dialogue and its pitfalls, the third considers questions of testimony and bearing witness to trauma and violence, and the fourth shifts focus to nonverbal sounds such as music and nature as a way to discover meaning.

Listening brings together philosophy of technology, ethics, and aesthetics with examples from film, literature, and art as well as reflections on listening as an everyday practice. This book recasts listening as an act of generosity-an active and open-ended process that unites giving and receiving.

Ever since the publication of Kripke's Wittgenstein on Rules and Private Language, the phenomenon of rule-following has been at the centre of intense debates within analytic philosophy. Some of these debates have been in part exegetical, but most -- if not all -- have also involved some reflections as to what it is to follow a rule (i.e. to understand the meaning of a sign and act on that understanding). It is this constitutive question which is the focus of this book. Over the past forty years, a great many accounts of the phenomenon have been put forward. Some, fully reductionist, attempt to ground meaning and understanding on features of the world which are not themselves intentional. Others, non-reductionist, instead maintain that meaning and understanding cannot be explained away and so must be recognised as bedrock, when it comes to our engagement with signs. However, accounts on both sides end up facing serious difficulties. Against this backdrop, Having Meanings in View lays the groundwork for a novel account of rule-following which, in being partially reductive, avoids the difficulties that have plagued previous attempts. It proposes to reconstruct the phenomenon of rule-following out of materials that do not presuppose linguistic meanings or conceptual contents, though without depriving itself altogether of properly intentional resources.

How did the ancient Greeks understand their many gods, and how were those understandings shaped through material acts of worship? Tulsi Parikh explores Archaic Greek religion through the practice of votive offering, treating objects not as passive reflections of belief but as active instruments of religious thought. Through votive gifts, ranging from everyday objects to carefully crafted dedications, worshippers negotiated the uncertain boundary between human and divine, defining divine power, presence, and otherness through material choice. Drawing on archaeological evidence from over twenty sanctuaries across Greece, the book reveals how local, regional, and interregional patterns of dedication expressed diverse yet interconnected theologies. Moving beyond long-standing models of chaos versus order in Greek polytheism, it foregrounds lived religious experience and shows how belief, cognition, and divine relationships were materially produced. The result is a fresh, material-based religious history of Archaic Greece-one written through things. This title is also available as open access on Cambridge Core.

Arc of Ambedkar's Fraternity focuses on B. R. Ambedkar in the light of recent global interest in constitutional fraternity. The book locates his work in the context of contemporary scholarship and examines deliberations on fraternity in the Constituent Assembly in relation to democracy and the divisions of caste, class, and religion. It looks at Supreme Court judgements and legal discussions that gradually interpreted Ambedkar's fraternity to frame state obligations and the socioeconomic rights of individuals and groups in relation to each other. Robinson reflects on the disappearance of fraternity and emergence of secularism as the focus of Indian social science debates, and the book highlights the need to bridge this gap by considering how the two are interconnected. Finally, the discussion turns to another strand in Ambedkar's thought, which located fraternity in religion, specifically, Navayana Buddhism, and questioned the limitations of democratic constitutionalism and secular law in creating fraternity. This perspective is read in the light of Derrida, who similarly indicated the paradox of fraternity in modern democracy. Ambedkar's Buddhism is thus interpreted not as an abandonment of politics or its practical resolution, but as an acknowledgement of the indeterminacy involved in keeping fraternity and democracy open to what is to come.

This Cambridge History is the most comprehensive longue duree treatment of Confucianism to date, bringing a much-needed historical perspective to this major force in art, literature, science and politics. Volume I traces the pre-modern history of Confucianism in three parts, from the earliest times to the fifteenth century. Looking beyond the influence of Neo-Confucian interpretations of the tradition, the chapters provide historically grounded perspectives on Confucianism's origins and practice. They examine how Confucian thought both influenced and was influenced by historical trends across time, including interstate relations and state-building, social structures, religion, gender and the family. Unpacking rigidly doctrinal narratives, this volume uncovers how Confucianism was really applied in dense social networks, bridging the apparent contradictions between the ideal tradition and its actual practice.

The first translation of a major work of political philosophy by J. G. Fichte, as well several additional works that help contextualize some of his other widely misunderstood translated work.

After moving from Jena to Berlin, J. G. Fichte continued to develop and revise his political philosophy. The 1812 Doctrine of Right and Other Political Writings contains most of the major works by Fichte in this period. It includes several pieces, unpublished in Fichte's lifetime, that help contextualize his most well-known work, The Addresses to the German Nation (1807-1808). In addition, this volume contains two lecture series from Fichte's return to teaching at the University of Berlin. The first, Lectures on the Vocation of the Scholar (1811), revisits the topic of the purpose of the philosophical life that Fichte had discussed several times prior in his career. The second, The Doctrine of Right (1812), amplifies and revises his theory of justice, law, and contract that he had originally published in his Foundations of Natural Right (1797-1798).

This second edition improves upon the first by offering a more detailed treatment of key topics and by expanding the set of problems and exercises. In particular, four new features deserve mention. First, the book now includes a more thorough exposition of natural deduction, explaining how derivations can be represented as trees of formulas. Second, it provides a detailed explanation of the main proof methods, illustrated with examples. Third, it offers a separate exposition of the logic of identity. Fourth, it presents a fuller treatment of modal logic, including results on consistency, soundness, and completeness. Additional changes include new examples drawn from elementary mathematics, a refined notation, and a more functional subdivision of the material, which simplifies some proofs and enhances clarity and readability. Overall, the text preserves the style of the first edition, aiming to present core ideas clearly, concisely, and with minimal distractions.

Philosophers and linguists often distinguish between fact-stating claims and other uses of language. The distinction is drawn in various ways: descriptive versus expressive, cognitive versus noncognitive, or truth-apt versus non-truth-apt uses, for example. Which of these, if any, is basic? Huw Price examines various attempts to analyse the notion of a factual claim, but argues that all are unsatisfactory. He concludes that the search for a sharp distinction is misconceived. Price proposes an alternative, based on a novel pragmatic genealogy of the notions of truth and falsity. He argues that these notions originate as norms of disagreement. By default, speakers attribute fault to those with whom they disagree, and commend those with whom they agree. This provides an incentive to resolve differences, with long-run advantages. Price argues that this is the origin of our ideas of truth, falsity, and objectivity, and the basis of what we take to be factual uses of language. Importantly, these norms come by degree. Sometimes two speakers can disagree, without either seeming to be mistaken. Price shows that such 'no fault' disagreements arise for reasons specific to particular discourses, explaining our sense that some topics are more factual than others. And in principle, he argues, no discourse is entirely immune. The book thus defends a kind of global nonfactualism. Understood in these pragmatic terms, factuality is an ideal that no actual language meets completely. Almost four decades downstream from the original 1988 edition of Facts and the Function of Truth, Price's pragmatic genealogy of factuality remains both novel and highly relevant to contemporary debates. This new expanded edition adds six newly-written chapters to the original nine. The new Introduction includes a reading guide to original material, while the five chapters in the new Part III connect the conclusions of the first edition to later work by Price himself and many other writers. It will be essential reading for students and practitioners interested in topics such as neopragmatism, expressivism, truth, semantic minimalism, deflationary metaphysics, philosophical genealogy, and conceptual engineering.

In recent years, activists and scholars have increasingly turned to the notion of racial capitalism to examine a range of topics, from the role of slavery in the development of the modern economy to the uneven effects of capitalism on nonwhite populations. Yet the meaning, scope, and political implications of this concept are deeply contested. Why has this idea provoked fierce debate? What can critical theory learn from engaging with the framework of racial capitalism and its use by social movements? How might reworking this framework push left politics and thinking to better understand our historical moment?

This book develops a critical theory of racial capitalism and argues that it is indispensable to understanding and contesting the neoliberal present. Challenging deracialized left critiques of neoliberalism, Siddhant Issar reconfigures the paradigm of racial capitalism to illuminate the relationships among anti-Black racism, settler colonialism, and capital accumulation. He historicizes the neoliberal era, examining American capitalism's changing yet durable long-term entanglements with gendered logics of racial and colonial domination. Bringing together political theory, Black studies, Native and Indigenous studies, and critical political economy with the knowledge production of social movements, Reckoning with Racial Capitalism calls for a reorientation of left politics beyond zero-sum framings of antiracist, anticolonial, and anticapitalist struggles.

A bold, systematic account of the role of repetition in shaping modern subjectivity for Kierkegaard, Freud, and Lacan.

Repetition and Subjectivity offers an in-depth exploration of the relationship between Kierkegaard's concept of repetition and the psychoanalytic one. Starting from the thesis that what lies at the heart of repetition is an ontological principle of duality, Bara Kolenc introduces four matrices of repetition: deflation, reformation, inflation, and formation. The fourth-formation-underlies the modern subject. While the contours of this scheme can be traced back to the ancient Greeks, Kierkegaard is the first to have articulated it fully, paving the way for Freud and Lacan to outline its logic most clearly. Rich and rigorous, Repetition and Subjectivity provides a new foundation for understanding modern subjectivity. Newly examining a range of philosophical and psychoanalytic concepts, from the Greek anamnesis (remembering) to the death drive and jouissance, Kolenc reveals repetition to be not simply a phenomenon but rather a central mechanism in forming the subject's relationship with reality.
