The first English translation of Emanuele Severino's radical critique of the notion of identity.
Starting from his central intuition that Western culture is essentially nihilism, Emanuele Severino reflects anew on the problem of identity, abandoning the ambiguous (and ultimately contradictory) fashion in which being and becoming are grasped in the Western tradition. In this foundational work in Severino's philosophy, the philosopher questions the dominant understanding of identity in Western culture, tracing it back to Aristotle's definition of identity as 'tautotes'. In his endeavour, Severino discusses - with his particular depth - the most renowned philosophical passages from Hegel, Aristotle, Plato and Kant, presenting a radical critique of identity.
This book constitutes part of Severino's monumental theoretical apparatus, comprising a critique of Western metaphysics that sets him alongside Heidegger in contemporary theory. This translation of Tautotes will appeal to those interested in the central problems of Ancient and contemporary philosophy, ontology and metaphysics.

This essential resource provides introductions to fifteen classics of 19th and 20th-century Protestant theology, ranging from Schleiermacher's The Christian Faith to Dorothy Sayers's The Mind of the Maker to Karl Barth's Church Dogmatics.
Each chapter gives a sketch of the author's life, traces the main themes of their classic work, and indicates the impact of each theologian and their approach. By including known works and introducing new contributions into the story, Vander Lugt expands standard notions of the theological canon and provides a refreshing retelling of how Protestant theology has developed over the last two hundred years.
Students of theology and Christian leaders will find this an accessible introduction to a rich and dense theological world.

From Walter Benjamin in Argentina to Theodor Adorno in Japan, this collection brings together leading scholars of Critical Theory to examine the impact of the Frankfurt School across global histories of the 20th century.
Featuring essays on Critical Theory's role in Brazil during dictatorship and redemocratization; the influence of Herbert Marcuse in Pinochet's Chile; the politics of Critical Theory in South Korea and intellectual relationships across Yugoslavia, Germany and the United States, the chapters in this volume consider how social, political, historical and intellectual conditions shaped local receptions of the Frankfurt School, and how the School's key thinkers in turn helped to transform these conditions.
Guided by Max Horkheimer's seminal distinction between critical and traditional theory, in which Critical Theory is distinguished by its self-reflexivity and awareness of its location within a larger social totality, The Internationalization of Critical Theory offers a groundbreaking reflection on Critical Theory at an international scale. Tracing the legacy of the Frankfurt School across Latin America, East Asia, Europe and North America, this volume offers new insights into the intellectual histories of both Critical Theory and global politics.

Cultivating the mystical experience and the contemplative traditions that underpin it can have profound ethical consequences.
By taking this path, alongside or instead of the analytic post-enlightenment route more familiar in the West, mysticism can shape the way that we relate our consciousness to our lived experience.
Contemporary society is a hostile place in which to hold onto ideas of hope, not least from an ethical standpoint. The anxiety that pervades this point in our shared history squeezes the opportunities to find escape or to reach a place beyond the immediate. Mysticism and Embodiment uses the body as a site from which to argue for a new understanding of this reality, framing transcendent experience in the context of existential phenomenology. In this context, the role of the mystical imagination comes to the fore, showing its immense value for individual and social healing, as well as our understanding of the other and how we can talk about new possibilities in ethical philosophy.

The function of eyespots on butterfly wings is to deflect attack away from vital organs. The cell membrane's function is to regulate the materials that pass in and out of the cell. However, biologists sometimes disagree about functions, such as the function of the giraffe's long neck or the zebra's stripes.
This outstanding volume, written by an international roster of expert contributors, examines the question of biological functions from a philosophical standpoint. It introduces readers to newer theories of function, as well as novel formulations of traditional views; critically examines the contours of function talk in specific biological specializations such as molecular biology, ecology, psychiatry, biomedicine, and neuroscience; and provides an overview of the way philosophers use function concepts outside of philosophy of biology, such as conceptual engineering, mental representation, ethics, and epistemology.
Philosophy of Biological Functions will be of particular interest to students and researchers in philosophy of science, especially philosophy of biology, and those interested in conceptual questions in the biological sciences and philosophy of psychology.

In this open access volume, Jerome C. Regier provides a comprehensive exploration of Heidegger's animal philosophy throughout the Gesamtausgabe, challenging its key ontological claims, whilst also updating the discussion to incorporate new insights from evolutionary biology and ethology.
Heidegger and Animals offers a new way of thinking about the relationship between humans and our fellow animals. It does this by exploring Heidegger's philosophical writings and oft-cited claim that there is an ontological abyss separating humans and human Dasein (whose way of being Heidegger calls "existence") and animals (whose way of being he calls "captivation"). Scrutinizing Heidegger's emphasis on human Dasein's distinctive way of being and his approach to ethology, experimental biologist Regier challenges Heidegger's ontological interpretation of animal behavior. In particular he does this by drawing on and reinterpreting numerous studies of bees and other arthropods, octopuses and other cephalopods, fish, birds, and mammals.
Questioning Heidegger whilst continuing to work within his conceptual framework, this book aims to expand Heidegger's understanding of existence (as Dasein) to include our fellow animals without denying an ontological abyss between existence and captivation. Through a more informed and sensitive understanding of biology, Regier reveals how humans and many animals are, after all, in both existence (as Dasein) and captivation.
This innovative study will be of great value to debates around animal rights and environmental protection, in defending the dignity of animals within a tradition of continental philosophy.

This open access introduction to the major Mexican philosopher and activist Luis Villoro shows how his ideas can reshape contemporary thought.
Carlos Montemayor tells the story, through a philosophical lens, of this leading Mexican thinker and his quest for justice and freedom. At the heart of the book is Villoro's liberational approach to knowledge production. He believed an education aimed at integrating freedom with knowledge stands in opposition to escapist epistemologies which unfortunately dominate our times.
From Villoro's early writings on epistemology and Mexican history to his involvement in Zapatismo, we find out how his ideas turned into actions. This is a compelling portrait of one of the most important figures in 20th-century Mexican philosophy. For anyone interested in Latin American perspectives it is an essential guide to the work of a philosopher who spent most of his life trying to understand the complexity of the American continent and its original habitants.

The profound influence of African and Afro-diasporic philosophy on Western thought has, throughout history, been denied and dismissed.
In an act of political and ideological defiance, Black Thought Matters traces the early production of philosophical thought to the African continent, disrupting the hegemonic Eurocentric narrative of the Enlightenment as the triumph of human rationality and intellectualism over blind religiosity. Across historical epochs-antiquity, the Enlightenment, the age of empire, and the modern world-LaRose T. Parris uncovers the persistent erasure, whitening, and distortion of Black thought. To rewrite this record, she draws on sources from Antef to Ibn Rushd, and Anna Julia Cooper to Frantz Fanon, as well as contemporary Africana philosophers, to construct a powerful counter-history that places Black thought at the centre rather than the margins of human knowledge.
In making the case for Africana philosophy's centrality to the genesis and movement of global philosophical and political thought, this book also valorizes transnational liberation efforts efforts repudiating Black dehumanization, criminalization, and extermination through state-sponsored police murder. Affirming Black thought's relevance announces a commitment to the import of Africana thinkers whose work laid the foundation for Black Lives Matter's ethical and political mission: to emphasize the intrinsic value of Black life and struggle to advance a radical egalitarianism wherein all lives are truly equal.

This collection of incisive essays is a nuanced interrogation of the suitability of literature as a vehicle for moral philosophy - a complex debate at the intersection of ethics and aesthetics.
What connects these different perspectives is a central question: is literature is an appropriate medium for approaching and unpicking moral, ethical and philosophical questions? And what insights does its form allow? Whilst some thinkers have charged literature as the source of feelings of resentment and alienation, others have argued that it is the most fertile ground for the development a moral imagination. Indeed, numerous philosophers have shown a great deal of interest in the possibility of reading literature as a philosophical exercise, with proponents such as Martha Nussbaum and Iris Murdoch leading the quest for a philosophical style which is more representative of human experience than abstract, analytic texts.
This volume brings together 12 exciting new contributions to this debate, contextualised by a comprehensive and in-depth editorial introduction that delves into its conceptual lineage. Grouped into three thematic sections, chapters explore literature's ability to be argumentative, its potential to bring about moral growth, and the rich diversity of philosophical thought across different literary genres.

Aesthetics and Music is a fresh, provocative exploration of the key concepts and arguments in musical aesthetics. It makes an eloquent case for a humanistic, meritocratic and genuinely aesthetic conception of music and musical understanding. Anyone interested in what contemporary philosophy has to say about music as an art will find this thought-provoking and highly enjoyable book required reading.
Thinkers discussed range from Pythagoras and Plato to Kant, Nietzsche and Adorno. Areas of music covered include classical, popular and traditional music, and jazz. This updated edition features new material, including three new chapters on the evolutionary perspective, words and music and music and language. There are guides to further reading, and new dialogues with some contemporary thinkers and musicians.

Faced with the widespread and radical forgetting of Christian tradition, this work models a renewed theological practice for teachers in line with Pope Francis' repeated calls for a dialogical theology: recontextualization.
Recontextualization is not about reading into the text what we want to hear. Instead, it is about engaging in a repeated process of meaning-making in order to listen to the way God continues to reveal Godself through the text in new contexts and in new times. Engaging with seven challenging biblical accounts, the book shows how these texts can open onto significant issues in contemporary culture and the Church.

Barbara Thiede presents an exploration of Yhwh as a complex character who models biblical masculinity by forming intimate relationships with his people Israel in the service of establishing his power and authority. Divine Masculinity in the Books of Samuel reveals that the Israelite deity's relationships with Israel, the prophet Samuel, King Saul, and King David feature a wide-ranging emotional palette. Yhwh's intense bonds with his men produce shifting and unstable male alliances and networks, which are homoerotic and often triangular. As Israel's ueber-man, his character demonstrates that biblical masculinity is assertive, forceful, jealous, vulnerable, and controlling.
Thiede illustrates how emotion is made to serve divine agenda and divine might is established and maintained through emotions and emotional display in the Books of Samuel. Yhwh is womanless, but the men he chooses to serve him may be brought to the height of ecstasy, emotionally abused, and sexually humiliated. The book demonstrates that Yhwh's emotional and sexual life revolves around his relationships with other male characters, exposing the uncompromising hegemonic masculinity that undergirds the biblical world.

Explores the meaning and power of the Buddhist goddess Tara as a fully awakened being whose feminine wisdom speaks directly to the crises of modern life. Beginning with a life-altering visionary experience during a medical crisis, sociologist ad Buddhist practitioner James William Coleman embarks on a wide-ranging inquiry into Tara's origins, symbolism, and enduring relevance. Drawing on archaeology, comparative mythology, sociology, depth psychology, and Buddhist philosophy, the book reveals how Tara emerged from ancient goddess traditions to become one of Buddhism's most radical figures: a Buddha who embodies compassion, wisdom, immediacy, and engagement with the suffering world.
Coleman situates Tara at the intersection of three defining movements of our time: the growing embrace of meditation and contemplative practice, the reassertion of the feminine in spiritual and cultural life, and the mounting environmental and social crises produced by ego-driven modernity. Rather than treating Tara as a distant deity, he presents her as a living expression of awakened consciousness-one that invites practitioners to embody wisdom, courage, and care in daily life.
Structured in three movements, the book first explores Tara's historical and sociological roots, then places her within the world's great goddess traditions, and finally examines her psychological and spiritual significance as an archetype of transformation. The concluding chapters turn decisively toward practice, offering accessible guidance for cultivating a Tara meditation that integrates insight, compassion, and ecological responsibility.
Combining personal narrative with scholarly rigor, this fresh reading of Buddhism offers readers not only a deeper understanding of Tara's place in religious history, but a practical spiritual path for meeting the personal, social, and planetary challenges of our time.

Vinyl records. Board games. Paperback books. Film. A philosopher dives into the analog world to show what it offers us and what it says about our values.
Packed with first-person anecdotes, hand-drawn illustrations, and extensive scholarship, Darren Hudson Hick takes us through the pleasure of board games and jigsaw puzzles and inside the values of materiality, care, and agency. Hick moves from pinball machines and first editions to meditative cleaning and pottery to introduce us to key ideas in value theory, everyday aesthetics, virtue theory, and care ethics, alongside findings from psychology, anthropology, and sociology.
What accounts for the resurgence of analog media? Why are we buying all this stuff? Hick approaches these questions from a pragmatist perspective - a view that demands drawing on personal experience to better understand the values that pervade our daily lives. The result is a lively and informed exploration of material culture that tells us a surprising amount about ourselves and how we live.
Whenever we set up a board game, dust a record, load a roll of film, or sit down with a coloring book, we get to think about what we value. The Love of Analog is a study in what's important to us. It's a celebration of being human.

For millennia nature has provided spiritual experiences of wonder, gratitude, and peace. Now nature is being burned, poisoned, and rendered extinct. This book asks: Can nature still provide spiritual inspiration?
Drawing on decades of original work in environmental ethics, religious environmentalism, contemporary spirituality, and fiction, Roger S. Gottlieb explores how ecological crisis reshapes spiritual life. What we trusted would nourish us and our descendants forever is diminished and threatened. We seek a refuge from the cruelties and madness of human culture and find bird species disappearing and oceans filling with plastic.
Gottlieb begins by clarifying what spirituality is and why nature has played a central role in it for religious believers and non-believers alike. He then examines the environmental crisis as a civilizational rupture that transforms hope, grief, meaning, and moral responsibility.
Nature spirituality, he suggests, must adapt to ecological loss and vulnerability. Difficult as it may be, we can nourish a spirituality in which grief coexists with gratitude, compassion with moral outrage, and acceptance with active solidarity and love for all of life.
The book concludes with a fictional narrative illustrating how each of us might face overwhelming environmental realities with a transformed spiritual vision.
