This book provides a novel, cultural-historical perspective on travel in the ancient world by exploring a wide range of women's (in)voluntary journeys and relocations, such as can be derived from passing references, short sections, and extended narratives found in the early Jewish corpora that remain to us.

The selected sources include a large body of literary texts from the Hebrew Bible, Septuagint, Pseudepigrapha, Dead Sea Scrolls, Philo, Josephus, and the New Testament, together with some documentary sources indicating the existence of certain types of travel up until early second century CE. They reveal a variety of mobile girls and women such as brides, businesswomen, captives, diplomats, diviners, economic and forced migrants, knowledge-seekers, midwives, musicians, nurses, pilgrims, refugees, sages, (semi)nomads, slaves, tourists, and war leaders. The book delivers a more nuanced notion of the past by challenging and demonstrating the need to move beyond the binary idea of "female stayers" and "male movers." In doing so, it foregrounds a previously overlooked aspect of travel history: female mobility, its many facets and inherent complexity as a sociocultural phenomenon, and its multiple transformational effects.

Women, Travel and Transformation from the Bible to Bar-Kokhba is of interest to students and scholars working on travel history, early Jewish literature, and women in antiquity, as well as those in biblical studies, religious studies, ancient history, and classics.

The Routledge Handbook of Religion and Politics in Latin America offers a state of the art of the academic and multidisciplinary reflection on the main aspects of the relationships between religion, politics, and society in Latin America.

The book provides insights from leading scholars in the fields of religious studies and political science, from the historical roots of religious pluralism to contemporary debates on religious freedom, democratization, and civic engagement, each chapter delves into a different aspect of this multifaceted topic. Special emphasis is given to the need to overcome the dominant reductionist approaches to the study of religion and politics in Latin America which focus too narrowly on church-state relations and ignore the sometimes contentious political and societal implications of the growing religious pluralism in the region. The handbook also aims to build bridges between the often isolated disciplines of religious studies and political science, as well as between Latin American and Western scholars. The first section provides an overview of the political perspectives of Latin American worldviews. The second section looks at the interface of religion and the public sphere. The third section delves into the multiple dimensions of religious freedom. Section four examines the complex relationship between religion and democratization. Section five explores religious civic engagement and its impact on development. Finally, section six offers several country case studies to illustrate points made in earlier sections and go more in-depth into particularities of each country.

The Routledge Handbook of Religion and Politics in Latin America will appeal to students and scholars of politics, religious studies, and Latin America, providing a valuable resource for understanding the forces shaping Latin American societies.

Why should anyone care about, much less study, something so commonplace as preaching and sermons? Preaching and the Sermon in the Twentieth Century answers this question. The authors argue that preaching and the sermon belong together as a separate discipline, sermon studies. This book is the first systematic introduction to the field. Focusing on the period 1890-2019 and preaching in the Christian tradition, the essays in this collection examine the definitions of a sermon and the developments in preaching and the sermon in different areas of the world. Unique to this book are the authors' discussions of the impact of "new" technologies such as TV and the crucial role played by women preachers. Sermon studies is important: this book explains why.

The relationship between religious identity and national identity has shaped societies for centuries, yet its deep historical roots are often overlooked. Religion and Nation: Intersections Across Time explores how the linkage between religion and nation dates back to the Middle Ages and, in some cases, ancient times, as seen with the Jews and Greeks. This groundbreaking book sheds light on the enduring connection between faith and collective identity, offering fresh perspectives on a topic that remains highly relevant today.

Featuring contributions from 20 leading scholars, this volume examines the dynamic interplay between religion and nation across different historical periods. From the early Middle Ages to more recent centuries, the chapters reveal how dominant religious structures have consistently served political purposes. Readers will discover how nations, united by language and traditions, often take on a religious dimension-even in cases like Ukraine and Hungary, where multiple Churches vie to define and preserve national culture.

This book is essential reading for historians, sociologists, political scientists, and anyone interested in understanding the profound ways religion and national identity have shaped human history. With its rich insights and diverse perspectives, Religion and Nation: Intersections Across Time offers a compelling exploration of a timeless and complex relationship.

This volume brings together experts in ancient Mediterranean societies to explore ways in which space (real and imagined, lived and projected) contributed to conceptualisations of communal "flourishing" in Early Christianity and its broad ancient context.

How to live well, or "flourish", has long been an object of theorization; this volume approaches the issue of flourishing in Early Christianity from an historical perspective, exploring constructions of and conditions for flourishing in ancient literary, visual and material culture. An introductory chapter offers a theoretical and methodological framework for the book, while subsequent chapters examine the production of spaces ("ethnic," urban, liturgical and religio-political) in ancient sources from the 5th century BCE to the 8th century CE, illuminating how they shape, enable or interrupt aspects of flourishing. By bringing flourishing and space together with the ancient sources, this volume offers an historically grounded account of flourishing which has the ability to clarify and balance these contemporary discussions.

Balancing theory with detailed historiographical work, this book offers a crucial intervention in the field of Early Christian studies, suitable for students and scholars working on space and the spatial turn in Late Antiquity and Early Christianity.

For the first time, this volume brings together the writings, lectures, and correspondence of two of the most distinctive voices in twentieth-century French thought: Alexandre Kojeve (1902-1968) and Gaston Fessard (1897-1978).
Kojeve is widely regarded as one of the most influential philosophers in France. His Hegel seminars of the 1930s shaped an entire generation of intellectuals, including Georges Bataille, Jacques Lacan, and Raymond Aron. Among his closest interlocutors was Gaston Fessard, a leading Jesuit theologian and himself a member of the seminar.
Authority, History, and Political Theology charts Kojeve and Fessard's friendship through their reviews of each other's work, lectures, letters, and unpublished essays. These texts, many translated into English for the very first time, show how each thinker grappled with urgent political-theological issues, such as the rise of totalitarianism, secularism, and Marxism.
Including a historical introduction, the volume situates their exchange at the intersection of Hegelian philosophy, Catholic theology, and global politics. It shows how two readers of Hegel- one an atheist philosopher, the other a Jesuit theologian - challenge how we think about political life, the role of religion in the public sphere, and the meaning of the end of history. Part of Bloomsbury's Political Theologies series, this book is essential for readers interested in political theology, continental philosophy, and intellectual history.

A rich, interdisciplinary exploration of music through Japanese aesthetics that calls for a new way to think about nature and the role of silence.

The art, aesthetics, and philosophies of medieval Japan and its contemporary Kyoto School lie at the centre of this book. Daryl Jamieson applies East Asian aesthetics, rooted in nature and ways of being that are very different from those of late-capitalist subjects, to critique contemporary experimental music from both Japan and the western world.

Introducing the unique features of Japanese aesthetics, Jamieson connects it to the North American music tradition that includes John Cage and his deep interest in Zen and Fluxus artists such as Yoko Ono. His original interpretation of sound constructs a new way of being in the world, showing how we can cultivate a more ethical way of hearing which is grounded in our environment.

This is a treatise for an aesthetics grounded in Buddhism and a music based on the ethics of respect for the environment. For anyone interested in cross-cultural interpretations of art and reality, it tells us why listening to difficult, challenging and obscure music matters in our present era of crises.

This book offers a fascinating ethnography of Russian Orthodox people and things in outer space, and of outer space in Russian Orthodoxy. It considers how the Russian Orthodox participate in cosmonautics on Earth and in outer space, and how they relate with humans venturing off Earth in their religious practices on Earth. The book's central ethnographic concern is the practice of sending icons to the International Space Station. Building on existing anthropological theory of Orthodox material culture, the author argues that icons are model objects that instruct the Orthodox in how to grasp God in all created things around them and, accordingly, how to orient themselves in the creation towards communion with God. Whatever one does for a living, including technoscientific research and flying to outer space, icons serve as a constant reminder for the Orthodox to always seek communion with God. Drawing on ethnographic data collected in Russian Orthodox parishes with links to the technoscientific industry of cosmonautics, the volume describes how living cosmonauts practice Orthodoxy and how deceased cosmonauts are remembered as Orthodox exemplars. It is especially relevant to scholars of the anthropology of religion and those interested in the social study of outer space, as well as others working on Orthodox Christianity, material culture, science and technology studies, and Russian and post-Soviet studies.

Challenges the dominant narratives that frame peace as a civilizational ideal. At a time when millions demand an end to war, occupation, and systemic oppression, this volume gathers diverse voices in a transnational and decolonial conversation. The contributors interrogate how "peace" is too often deployed as a mirage-reproducing systems of exclusion and violence under the guise of stability, order, and reform.

Exposing the coloniality embedded within hegemonic peace discourses, contributors reveal how imperial power configurations transform freedom into occupation, democracy into exclusion, and security into violence. Through critically self-reflective engagement with both religious and secular worldviews, contributors propose that peace is not an abstract ideal, but a deeply political construct shaped by empire, enforced through intervention, and justified by a faith in modernity's civilizing mission. Rejecting both reformist inclusion and idealized neutrality, these essays embody a political commitment to the tormented, the resisting, and the marginalized.

From "post-conflict" pacification to imperial "peace deals," contributors unmask peacebuilding as often war by other means-while advancing liberative spiritualities that reimagine peace as justice from below. This book is not merely critique-it is a call to transformation.

The fourteen articles in this volume examine the effect of Renaissance humanism on science, philosophy, biblical studies, conciliarism, patristic scholarship, East-West religious relations, and the Augustinian Order, including Giles of Viterbo, the head of the Order when Martin Luther rebelled. The articles discuss not only major actors such as Galileo Galilei, Marsilio Ficino, Lorenzo Valla, Pietro Pomponazzi, Pope Nicholas V, George Scholarius, Cardinal Bessarion, and Cardinal Robert Bellarmine, but also lesser known ones such as Pietro Balbi, Zanobi Acciaiuoli, Theodore Gaza, John Plousiadenos, and Niccolo Scutelli. The history of patristic authors in the Renaissance looms large, especially St. Augustine, Ignatius of Antioch, Basil the Great, Eusebius of Caesaria, and Pseudo-Dionysius the Areopagite.

Against the background of selected themes in contemporary philosophy, this book argues that Richard Shusterman's somaesthetics is not only an aesthetics but, first of all, it is a philosophy.

The book schematically outlines the philosophical background of pragmatism and of Shusterman's views, which are both popular and relevant to contemporary humanist thought. Linking Shusterman's biography with themes from his work, Kremer suggests that Richard Shusterman is first and foremost a philosopher, not merely an aesthete.

With origins in pragmatism, the somaesthetics presented by Shusterman lays the groundwork for everyday aesthetics as a new field of pragmatist aesthetics. Alexander Kremer demonstrates that this somaesthetics--the critical meliorative study of the experience and use of one's body as a locus of sensory-aesthetic appreciation (aesthesis) and creative self-fashioning--has a serious philosophical background and is not confined to aesthetics. Kremer specifically explores the relation between Shusterman's somaesthetics and everyday aesthetics, a general theory of understanding and Shusterman's theory of interpretation, and the meaning of life.

Philosophy always tries to understand and interpret the world and man in it by means of the most general concepts. This book takes the reader on a philosophical adventure, exploring the philosophical background of the field of beauty and of the fine arts.

This volume presents new studies on the descriptions and discussions of the path to liberation in different Hindu traditions. The first part examines path-related contents in the works of three philosophers, namely the Vaise?ika Prasastapada, the Saiva Utpaladeva, and the Visi??advaita Ve?ka?anatha. The second part shows how path-oriented practices and theistic views are related with soteriological goals in the Pasupata, Pancaratra, and Pura?ic traditions. Overall, the essays illustrate the diversity and complexity of the discourse on the path to liberation, offering new insights into the religious and philosophical map of premodern South Asia.

Islamic mysticism finds expression not only in writings, speeches, and rituals but also in a rich material culture. From specific buildings, such as dance rooms, and distinctive clothing, especially the cloak, to dervish paraphernalia-rosaries, staffs, begging bowls, animal skins, and many others-these objects bridge the spiritual and the tangible. Fully illustrated, this groundbreaking volume explores the extraordinary diversity of Sufi material culture across the Muslim world. It reveals how buildings, clothing, and symbolic artifacts reflect the inseparable bond between transcendence and immanence in Sufism. An essential resource for anyone fascinated by the intersection of faith and materiality.

American troops sent to Northern Ireland in 1942 were warned against discussing religion and politics with their hosts. Historical writing on wartime Northern Ireland appears to have partially heeded that advice by focusing on politics to the near-exclusion of religion. This book, the first detailed exploration of religion in wartime Northern Ireland, examines how churches responded to the challenges of international conflict. It presents an analysis of mid-twentieth century Northern Ireland that attends to the complexity of religion which has more commonly been portrayed in binary and crudely homogeneous terms.

Dieter T. Roth presents an extensive study of the so-called "staurogram," argued to be the earliest visual depiction of the crucifixion of Christ. Roth examines the origins of this depiction in early New Testament manuscripts as a ligature or compendium of two letters in certain abbreviations of the words "cross" (stauros in Greek) or "crucify" (stauroo in Greek) in which the Greek letter rho is superimposed upon the Greek letter tau. In this work, the staurogram, ultimately understood to be a simple yet powerful depiction of Jesus crucified, is analyzed and located within the framework of ancient abbreviations, the nomina sacra, and the developing Christian visual culture in order to offer, for the first time, a wide-ranging presentation of this symbol in early Christianity. From the symbol's origins within words in some of our earliest, extant New Testament manuscripts to its use as a free-standing Christogram, this volume provides important insight into how Christians, beginning with the staurogram, depicted visually their faith in a crucified Christ.

This volume presents a wide range of examples using Hegel's 'objective dialectic' as an interpretive key for understanding his philosophical work. It explores the potential of a strictly dialectical approach to central themes in Hegel's logic, philosophy of nature, and philosophy of spirit.

The volume argues for taking contradiction seriously in Hegel's philosophy, understanding it in strictly theoretical terms that defy traditional conceptions of logic and ontology. The contributors demonstrate how Hegel's distinctive logical-metaphysical method, particularly his concept of 'dialectic' and the role of logical contradiction within it, can be applied to logical, epistemological, natural- and social-ontological, psychological, ethical, and political matters. Moving beyond both non-metaphysical readings and earlier ontological interpretations, the volume shows how Hegel's understanding of 'real contradiction' offers a renewed approach to his thematically rich oeuvre and addresses complex post-Kantian philosophical issues.

Reviving Hegel's Dialectic will be of interest to researchers and graduate students specializing in Hegel, German Idealism, post-Kantian philosophy, and the history of logic.

How do we understand a religion without texts? Minoan and Mycenaean imagery has long been interpreted through comparisons with Egypt and the ancient Near East-but never in a comprehensive and systematic way. This book offers the first consistent analysis of such connections. By examining seals, frescoes, rings, and luxury objects, it reveals how religious ideas, divine figures, and elite identities were shaped through visual language. A large corpus of Aegean and Near Eastern material shows how motifs were related to one another and how foreign motifs were selected, adapted, and transformed. The study provides new tools for interpreting Aegean religion and offers fresh insights into intercultural exchange and the movement of images and ideas across the Bronze Age Mediterranean.

Combining theory with practical perspectives from diverse disciplines, this volume provides a wide-ranging exploration of AI ethics across healthcare, education, military operations, and more.
As AI technology advances rapidly, ethical dilemmas become increasingly complex and multifaceted. This book uniquely addresses these challenges by bringing together cutting-edge research from philosophy, law, computer science, sociology, and psychology to offer a holistic understanding of AI ethics.

Divided into five parts, Part I, focused on moral reasoning, sets the stage by delving into the philosophical foundations necessary for understanding AI ethics. Chapters on recalibrating AI ethics, deskilling moral reasoning, and principles of care provide a robust theoretical framework. Parts II to IV address the practical applications of AI ethics in healthcare; wider societal contexts, from art to warfare; and education and business. The diverse expertise brought by an international team of leading and emerging scholars provides a rich and nuanced examination of timely issues including AI and mental health and algorithmic injustices. The final part then attends to AI safety, assessing the infeasibility of accurately monitoring advanced AI systems and the urgent safety, and ethical, considerations this necessitates.

Using real-word case studies throughout, such as prompt tests for algorithmic racism in ChatGBT 3.5, AI Ethics Explored is essential reading for anyone seeking a better understanding of the complicated ethical issues we all face and will continue to face as artificial technology evolves.

This book gathers perspectives on how nonhuman neighbors not only invite our curiosity, but also enrich our deepest awarenesses, commanding attention even as they challenge our scientific, ethical, religious and law-based abilities and reflections. Nonhuman animals thereby lure us into more-than-human realms, intimating a far richer world than that which we have purported to construct by elevating humans alone through less-than-generous dismissals of these inevitable neighbors on this life-conferring and species-diverse Earth.

"The Animal Invitation is a most timely and important interdisciplinary celebration of the fact that every moment of every day each human lives and acts in a more-than-human world."
- Marc Bekoff, Ph.D., author of The Emotional Lives of Animals: A Leading Scientist Explores Animal Joy, Sorrow, and Empathy and Why They Matter.

"The Animal Invitation opens interdisciplinary doors that facilitate any reader exploring the multiple dimensions encountered when studying our shared Earth's larger community of life."
- Joyce Tischler, affectionately known as "the Mother of Animal Law," is the co-founder of the Animal Legal Defense Fund and was for twenty-five years its executive director.

This edited collection explores the connection between religion and James Bond.
George Tsakiridis and the contributors dissect artifacts from across the Bond universe-such as films, comic strips, and Ian Fleming's foundational novels-observing the religious and philosophical underpinnings of Bond's belief system. Though 007 does not typically prescribe to a religious system, he nonetheless encounters religion, is shaped by philosophical purpose, and becomes immersed in a religious world. Tsakiridis and the contributors consider both the religion and worldview of Bond as well as the symbols, presentations, and themes of religion woven into the texts themselves. Across thirteen chapters, they contend that by shining a light on religion in James Bond, we not only better understand this iconic character but the cultural and historical contexts that mold him.

Made Righteous: The Teaching of John Chrysostom on Justification from the Letter to the Romans offers a discourse analysis of justification in John Chrysostom's writings. It analyses Chrysostom's homilies and practices regarding justification, engaging his thoughts with modern scholarship. Elias masterfully interweaves the fields of biblical studies and patristics, considering them as integrated disciplines. The book begins by outlining the human ontological problems after the Fall, and then it examines Chrysostom's understanding of justification as a solution to the human condition. It further explores God's righteousness through Christ's redeeming works. Additionally, Elias delves into Chrysostom's theology and practices to understand his model of justification. Finally, the book considers the ultimate purpose of justification as deification.

Religious and Indigenous practices that counter despair, cultivate courage, and sustain moral action in the fight for environmental justice. Climate change is an ecological and political crisis, but it is also a spiritual one. Fractured relationships with the natural systems that sustain us and frustration with leaders' seeming inability to respond, has led many to grief, despair, burnout, and moral exhaustion. Indeed, current research on eco-anxiety and climate grief show that emotional overwhelm undermines collective action, even when solutions are known and available.

But there is a path forward, one found within religious and Indigenous traditions that have long cultivated practices for living with loss, sustaining hope, and acting ethically within fragile ecosystems. By bringing the psychology of climate grief into conversation with Indigenous and religious traditions, this book offers a framework for moving beyond paralysis toward resilient, justice-centered engagement. Each chapter draws on case studies from diverse Indigenous and religious traditions. challenging extractive worldviews, emphasizing relationality and interdependence, and grounding justice in care for land, community, and future generations. Together, they explore what it means to engage in inner activism: the work of moral courage, clarity, and presence that makes sustained ecological action possible. Practices of mindfulness, ritual, lament, storytelling, and community accountability are presented not as private coping strategies but as sources of collective resilience and ethical commitment. Emphasizing hope without denial and action without burnout, this book offers spiritual resources for transforming grief into courage, solidarity, and sustained engagement for ecological justice.

This collection of incisive essays is a nuanced interrogation of the suitability of literature as a vehicle for moral philosophy - a complex debate at the intersection of ethics and aesthetics.

What connects these different perspectives is a central question: is literature is an appropriate medium for approaching and unpicking moral, ethical and philosophical questions? And what insights does its form allow? Whilst some thinkers have charged literature as the source of feelings of resentment and alienation, others have argued that it is the most fertile ground for the development a moral imagination. Indeed, numerous philosophers have shown a great deal of interest in the possibility of reading literature as a philosophical exercise, with proponents such as Martha Nussbaum and Iris Murdoch leading the quest for a philosophical style which is more representative of human experience than abstract, analytic texts.

This volume brings together 12 exciting new contributions to this debate, contextualised by a comprehensive and in-depth editorial introduction that delves into its conceptual lineage. Grouped into three thematic sections, chapters explore literature's ability to be argumentative, its potential to bring about moral growth, and the rich diversity of philosophical thought across different literary genres.

This monograph examines ethical discourse in Luke-Acts by bringing narrative ethics into sustained conversation with cognitive linguistics. It argues that the Lukan narrative forms moral perception not simply through rules or exemplars, but through narratological patterns and devices that presume readerly agency, freedom, and participation. Focusing on three recurring moral metaphors-the social family, moral accounting, and the life journey-the study offers a phenomenological account of how the Lukan narrative shapes ethical reasoning at the level of embodied cognition. In so doing, it reframes longstanding discussions in Lukan ethics by attending to the largely tacit, formative processes through which narratives shape readers' moral understanding. By attending closely to narrative form, conceptual metaphor, and moral imagination, this book clarifies how Luke-Acts guides ethical interpretation without prescribing it, contributing a methodologically rigorous approach to New Testament ethics.

This translation of the L?oz? is unique in its faithful pursuit of the original meaning and prosody, combined with exhaustive citations of historical commentaries, connecting the insights of this ancient classic to current scientific and psychological findings.

Rooted in the understanding that the ineffable Dao guides all things, the L?oz? addresses cosmology, the yin and yang equilibrium, egalitarianism, the use of force and the cultivation of equanimity. This book examines the poetics through analysis of structural form and ancient Chinese phonology, seeking to enliven the text's meanings by reviving its phonology. It is the first attempt to link the L?oz?'s cosmology and theory of Oneness in personal growth, social relationships, and humanity's place in the natural world with today's biological sciences.

Contemporary Catholic environmentalism is at a crossroads, both theologically and politically. While the first half of the 20th century saw only fleeting references to environmental concerns in papal encyclicals, Pope John Paul II's 1990 New Year's Day address, later titled The Ecological Crisis, marked a pivotal shift. His stark warnings about the planet's mounting ecological challenges galvanized the Catholic theological community, prompting numerous regional bishops' statements that highlighted pressing local environmental issues. By the mid-1990s, Catholic environmentalism had evolved into a distinct theological discourse and a burgeoning political movement, attracting support from both church hierarchy and lay Catholics worldwide.

Despite Pope John Paul II's efforts to root Catholic environmental thought in the stewardship paradigm, his success in securing theological consensus was limited. While Pope Benedict XVI endorsed this model, many Catholic theologians and scholars voiced significant reservations. Some critiqued its vague theological underpinnings, others lamented its inherent anthropocentrism, and still others sought a broader scriptural foundation for environmental ethics. These critiques signaled a growing desire for an alternative framework.

With the publication of Laudato Si in 2015, Pope Francis ushered in a new era of Catholic environmentalism. His encyclical reaffirmed the theological and moral urgency of ecological issues while challenging humanity's unchecked technological optimism and deep-seated anthropocentrism. At the heart of his vision is the idea that all creation manifests divine love, calling Catholics to embrace a theocentric environmental ethic. This book builds upon Laudato Si, offering a fresh theological framework that moves beyond stewardship toward a more expansive, love-centered approach to creation care.

Drawing on theories of myth and narratives from pop culture, this book develops a sociology of the story that shows how stories create meaning in contemporary religious practices in the West.

Martin Stringer shows how stories work in religion within the context of the story-saturated world of the 21st century through discussions of a wide range of theories of myth. He traces religious elements in the stories of film, television and literature to explore how a wide range of stories impact how we engage with, talk about and live religion. In this way, he shows that the myths at the heart of religious traditions are not the only stories that shape how religion is practised today.

Each of the ten chapters introduces an influential theory of myth, including those of Edward B. Tylor, Claude Levi-Strauss and Sigmund Freud, before applying this theory to a story or trope from folklore, literature or popular culture. In addition to these entertaining excursions into the worlds of Frankenstein, werewolves and superheroes, each chapter also provides a retelling of the classic fairy tale Snow White framed by the theory introduced in the chapter. In highlighting core themes from the different theories of myth, these ten different Snow Whites reveal the fluidity of stories and the theories we create about them.

In its bold combination of theories of myth, popular culture and religion, The Story in Religion shows how people use a range of stories to create identities, emotions and realities in their religious practices. In this way, the book alters how we think about meaning-making in religious contexts and in society more broadly.
