Presenting case studies from across the lifespan, this book provides a comprehensive analysis of the causes and complications of complex trauma, as well as a framework for trauma-informed care. Complex trauma significantly impacts upon survivors' sense of identity, emotional self-regulation and relationships.

The author presents four new theoretical underpinnings to address CPTSD's disturbances in a child and non-offending parents' identity, self-regulation, self-compassion, and posttraumatic cognitions. Case studies and trauma survivor testimonies are introduced at the beginning of each chapter and interwoven throughout the theory and research. The chapter narratives support the reader with decision points and reflections to embed learning by practically linking theories, concepts, and practices to real-world examples to embody learning outcomes. Collectively the chapters build a relational model of trauma-informed care grounded in interdisciplinary collaboration across education, psychology, law, policy, medicine, and trauma-informed ethics.

A much-needed contribution to the knowledge and treatment of complex PTSD, this is an essential resource for professionals and educators working in childhood trauma and mental health.

This book presents a concise yet comprehensive exploration of key object relations theories and their relevance in contemporary society. It traces the impact of early interactions with the 'mothering person' on the infant's psychic development and examines psychogenic pathology as a manifestation of self-arrest shaped by anxiety-driven object attachments. The text engages with Melanie Klein's matriarchal formulation of object relations, Balint's relational framework, Mahler's concepts of symbiosis and separation-individuation, and Winnicott's existential orientation. The text further provides critical insights into Fairbairn's dynamic trinity, Bion's movement towards psychospiritual understanding, and Bowlby's ethological emphasis on attachment and dependency. Kohut's self-psychological view of narcissistic energies is examined alongside Kernberg's ego psychological object relations model and Chodorow's feminist analysis of gender and culture. It concludes with a critical comparative appraisal of the selected theories. Written in clear and accessible language, the book offers practical guidance to the praxis of object relational psychoanalysis through illustrative case vignettes from Indian mythology, fairy tales, popular movies, novels and case illustrations. It is intended as an enriching resource for psychoanalytic practitioners, theorists, faculty members, research scholars, and postgraduate students, and serves as a valuable reference for allied disciplines, including psychology, philosophy, psychiatry, social work, public health, medical education, and psychiatric nursing.

Computational Approaches to Emotion in Artificial Psychology provides readers with a comprehensive introduction to how emotions can be processed by AI systems. It offers theoretical and practical guidance on data preprocessing and emotion analysis techniques, explores diverse real-world applications, and bridges the gap between AI and psychology.

Beginning with an introduction to the emerging field of artificial psychology, it explores the study, understanding, and recognition of emotions in various bodily signals, including facial expressions, voice, heart rate, and neural mechanisms. The book delves into data preprocessing for embodied emotion analysis, encompassing multiple data modalities like text, audio, visual, and gaze data, with a focus on Python basics for emotional AI. Additionally, it discusses EEG-based emotion decoding, emotional insights from medical imaging, affective image analysis, text-based emotion recognition, multimodal data integration, unsupervised learning for embodied emotion discovery, reinforcement learning, emotion elicitation, and predicting personality and emotional abilities using machine learning. The book concludes by examining the close relationship between cognition and emotion from the perspective of the universal structure of language and describing the use of deep fuzzy cognitive maps in diagnosing coronary artery disease.

By promoting research and innovation through case studies and experiments, it addresses the current lack of comprehensive resources in this interdisciplinary field, making it an essential reference for researchers, practitioners, students, and professionals seeking to navigate the intersection of AI and emotions.

This comprehensive work systematically describes Wilfred Bion's work on psychosis and critically develops his contribution in order to arrive at an appropriate and modern understanding of the disorder.

The book provides deep insights into the psychoanalytic treatment of psychotic patients through comprehensive analysis of key concepts including the alpha function, the failure to dream, and psychic retreat. It bridges theoretical understanding with clinical application, examining how psychotic minds function as sensory organs rather than thinking apparatus, and offers practical guidance for therapeutic work with severely impacted patients. The text critically evaluates both the achievements and limitations of Kleinian approaches while presenting fresh perspectives on childhood withdrawal and delusional structure formation.

Bion and Psychosis is essential reading for psychoanalysts, psychiatrists, clinical psychologists, and mental health professionals working with psychotic patients. It serves as an invaluable resource for trainees, postgraduate students and researchers in psychoanalysis, particularly those studying Kleinian theory, Bion's work, or severe mental disorders.

Competence and Self-Care in Counselling and Psychotherapy explores care and replenishment of the self as an essential requirement for maintaining competence in practice and offers a framework for understanding what being competent means for practitioners, both generally and in work with clients.

The book proposes a culture of care for practitioners that begins with the individual, influences the quality of personal and therapeutic relationships created both inside and outside the professional environment, and extends into the frameworks that support and validate professional practice. It goes further, discussing the role of therapy in caring for society and the contribution it can make as humankind faces extraordinary challenges. As well as exploring relevant concepts, the book is fully updated with practical suggestions for addressing the core training requirements of maintaining professional competence, of practising reflectively, ethically and sustainably and of considering the wider social environment, including issues of culture, identity and social justice.

This book is an ideal choice for counsellors, psychotherapists, supervisors and trainers who wish to maintain a robust standard of practice, and for those employing them.

This book explores how and why genocide is a transcultural and transhistorical phenomenon, reflects the unconscious processes that drive human nature, and draws broadly on psychoanalytic theory, as well as on social science and philosophical perspectives.

Using Bass's own research on genocide and his considerable clinical psychoanalytic experience, the book examines what it is within us that leads us to see some people or groups as "other," what we project onto these groups, how we can come to dehumanize them, and how mass murder can become a purportedly ethical imperative. Using real- life examples, it explores the question of what genocide says about us individually and collectively, how apparently "normal" people can take part in genocide.

Tackling one of the most important topics of our time, this is key reading for all psychoanalysts and psychotherapists, and for philosophers, social scientists, and psychologists.

In this fascinating volume, Meg Harris Williams explores Wilfred Bion's autobiographical works, analysing their theoretical importance and continued relevance to the personal experience of others.

Williams shows how these works are less about Bion's life and more about his way of thinking, in which episodes from his own experience are used to illustrate the mind in action. His model of the mind is vividly evoked through his own presentation of himself and his manner of noting and observing internal conflicts. His example constitutes a unique resource in the process of self-analysis, something which is illustrated here by the experiential responses of four contributing psychoanalysts: Vera Montagna, Vivienne Pasieka, Anne Lise Scappaticci and Alison Vaspe.

This book is a fundamentally enriching tool for the practising psychoanalyst, and an invaluable resource for students of psychoanalysis and psychology, as well as those interested in autobiographical literature.

This groundbreaking book explores the understudied phenomenon of victimization recurrence, introducing the clinically robust concept of the recidivist victim and translating it into an innovative diagnostic tool: the Clinical Spectrum of Recidivist Victims, developed from over twenty years of clinical practice.

Drawing from extensive psychotherapeutic experience and doctoral research in forensic psychology, Dr. Rojas presents a relational psychoanalytic framework that maps the range of psychological positions individuals may occupy in relation to repeated harm-from those who remain caught in recurrent victimization without awareness, to those who have moved out of victimization as an organizing position in their lives. Each position within the spectrum is clinically characterized through its subjective, relational, and embodied dimensions. Using embodied language, the book interweaves theoretical foundations with clinical vignettes and personal narratives, offering clear concepts and practical tools for addressing traumatic repetition without reducing it to willpower or individual deficit.

Written with depth, sensitivity, and ethical commitment, this book is intended for clinicians, researchers, and practitioners, as well as for anyone who believes they are-or have been-caught in recurring patterns of victimization and seeks to understand them without judgment.

The Psychology of High-Performance Sports Organizations: Culture, Safety, and Leadership provides a step-by-step guide to managing a professional sports organization through the principles of organizational psychology and psychological safety. It offers insights on how to manage sports organizations effectively, covering team operations, culture, and performance design. Readers will gain a deep understanding of psychological safety and learn how to cultivate it in diverse team settings.

Although focused on professional sports, many of the key takeaways are applicable to elite amateur sports organizations and general businesses. Some of the topics covered in the book include transformational leadership, values-based decision-making, talent development, psychological safety, and leadership, which can all be applied outside of the sport organization. While these topics have been explored extensively individually, this is one of the first books to bring all of them together with a focus on sports and in an easy-to-digest format. Each chapter provides the what, the why, and the how: what is the concept, why is it important, and how can it be applied in the real world?

Whether the reader is preparing for a career in sports management or is already in that world, The Psychology of High-Performance Sports Organizations: Culture, Safety, and Leadership delivers practical, research-backed insights for fostering psychological safety and improving team performance and is key reading for students, researchers, and practitioners in the fields of sport psychology, sport management, organizational behavior, organizational psychology, and related subdisciplines.

Broaching Race, Ethnicity, and Culture in the Counseling Process identifies practical strategies and tools that help mental health providers facilitate discussions with their clients about the extent to which issues related to race, ethnicity, and culture impact their presenting concerns.

Broaching refers to a counseling approach in which the mental health provider discusses the contextual dimensions of race, ethnicity, and culture during the counseling process. This book provides a conceptual framework and an empirically supported set of strategies for helping mental health providers skillfully navigate conversations that support clients in their exploration and examination about how issues of race, ethnicity, and culture may intrude upon their sociocultural and sociopolitical realities. Each chapter provides a detailed discussion of a specific component of the broaching framework, a review of relevant research that provides evidentiary warrants supporting the model, guidance about implementing the broaching model, case examples to illustrate how the broaching process can unfold, and provider-client broaching dialogues, along with a set of discussion questions to support continued learning and skill development.

Drawing on the theoretical and empirical multicultural counseling literature, this groundbreaking text integrates and synthesizes the existing broaching literature in ways that render the process of discussing race, ethnicity, and culture more concrete.

In a profound new interweaving of the ideas of Levinas and Laplanche, this book rethinks the origin of ethical capacity in human life.

It elaborates on the implications of ethics at the beginning of life in the care of infants; in psychoanalytic practice; and in the socio-political sphere. The author puts forward the hypothesis of the feminine maternal dimension as the origin of ethical capacity, and proposes the notion of "ethical seduction" to address the asymmetry between analyst and analysand. With rich clinical vignettes, the text offers an expansive metapsychology linking three elements: the organic body and the "Vital-Identital"; the erotic body and the "Sexual"; and the infinite part of our psyche arising through the "Ethical".

Written in the long shadow of the Shoah and amid contemporary violence, this book is original and meaningful reading for all psychoanalysts.

This comprehensive Research Handbook demonstrates how culture shapes emotional experience and expression across human societies. Moving beyond debates centred on universality and cultural specificity, it evaluates cross-cultural similarities and meaningful differences throughout emotion processes.

A geographically diverse array of leading experts explore theoretical perspectives and methodological advances as frameworks for understanding emotion communication and the social functions of emotions. They analyse discrete emotions such as disgust, anger, love and happiness through interdisciplinary approaches spanning psychology, sociology and computational lenses. Featuring understudied topics and global viewpoints often absent from mainstream research, this Research Handbook serves as a key resource for future avenues of psychological study.

The Research Handbook on Culture and Emotion is an essential reference point for scholars and students of cultural psychology, emotion psychology and communication. Affective scientists and social psychologists will also benefit from its evidence-based approach and theoretical foundations.

Martin Luther King Jr. was not only a visionary leader in the struggle against racism and injustice, but also a complex individual who grappled with clinical depression and exhibited manic personality traits. Drawing on newly conducted oral history interviews with King's close associates, as well as previously untapped material from earlier interviews, Soul on Fire offers a nuanced portrait of King's inner struggles with mental health. Psychological research suggests that depression can heighten empathy, while manic traits may foster resilience in the face of adversity. These insights offer a compelling lens through which to understand how King's personal psychological experiences may have shaped his extraordinary leadership and moral clarity. Grounded in expert interpretations, Soul on Fire explores how King's emotional depth and psychological complexity informed his philosophy of nonviolence-reframing it as a radical politics of empathy. As one of the first in-depth analyses of the psychological dimensions of nonviolent leadership, this book provides readers with a powerful framework for understanding and embracing nonviolence as a transformative approach to social change.

In this book, Chyatat Supachalasai offers a reinterpretation of Marx's concept of the proletariat through a Lacanian lens, drawing on the works of Karl Marx and Jacques Lacan.

Building on the intellectual connection between Marx and Lacan, Supachalasai proposes "proletariat discourse", which arises from a re-reading of Marx's proletariat through Lacanian psychoanalysis, drawing on key concepts such as the hysteric, alienation, enjoyment, anxiety, and trauma. Supachalasai argues that Lacan's notion of capitalist discourse, developed in the 1970s, reveals an inherent "non-relationship" aspect within this discourse, indicating the position of proletariat discourse. This proletariat discourse encapsulates three essential components. First, it establishes an agreement and disagreement between Marxist political theory and Lacanian psychoanalysis. Second, it posits that Marx's understanding of the proletariat can be redefined and comprehended through a Lacanian psychoanalytic framework. Lastly, while portraying Marx's proletariat as a subject of resistance to capitalism, this discussion connects with Lacan's goal of seeking an "exit from capitalism". However, from a Lacanian perspective, this connection also highlights the limitations inherent in Marx's concept of the proletariat.

The Proletariat Discourse will be of great interest to scholars and readers interested in Lacanian-Marxist partnership, psychoanalysis, political thought, Lacanian studies, and critical theory.

This book is about psychiatric nursing in Bangladesh. Bangladesh, a densely populated South Asian nation with around 170 million people, has recently transitioned to a lower-middle-income country, yet it faces a significant dual burden of communicable and non-communicable diseases. There is an extreme shortage of nurses in Bangladesh where currently (as of February 2023) 77,838 registered nurses are available. As per a cautious projection, the demand for nurses will be 483,000 in 2030. The latest estimate revealed that there are 0.43 psychiatric nurses for every 100,000 patients. Currently, no textbook is available in Bangladesh specifically focused on psychiatric nursing, despite the country's urgent need for mental health education. This book would provide basic insights and culturally relevant skills to help bridge the health services in the country. Offering localized content, practical case studies, and context-specific interventions will equip the next generation of nurses to better serve the mental health needs of Bangladeshi communities. There is no similar book in the market on psychiatric nursing in Bangladesh. Hence this will be the first book of its kind according to the curriculum of BSc Nursing in Bangladesh.

This comprehensive Handbook will change the current mindset about sibling relationships-from a relationship of secondary importance to parent-child relationships-to one that reflects the many ways siblings contribute to individual development and family functioning throughout the life course and across diverse cultural contexts. As it presents the growing body of research on sibling relationships, it offers a new sibling-informed theoretical framework that challenges traditional notions of the sibling bond as one based on hostility, rivalry, and conflict. New directions are offered for research and practice that will address the real needs of families. This Handbook is relevant to all researchers and mental health practitioners.

Human goodness and the associated psychic phenomena are essential trajectories of mental health and well-being, towards which an ethical psychoanalytic work should ultimately strive. This book attempts to bring together the relatively limited and scattered psychoanalytic literature on these phenomena; to synthesize, analyze, and narrate the main ideas of that literature; and to discuss these ideas with personal reflections on each topic. It presents twelve essays, each on a book that related to an aspect of goodness: Kindness, Gentleness, Commitment, Passion, Love, Forgiveness, Happiness, Dignity, Playfulness, Spontaneity, Curiosity, and Faith, with an outro on Gratitude. This book will be of interest to psychoanalysts and psychoanalytic psychotherapists, professionals and students in mental health, and, more broadly, to readers in psychology, sociology, philosophy, and other humanitarian sciences.

This book explores the critical role of performance criteria (PC) in research and interventions for autistic individuals, emphasizing its function as a moderator between independent and dependent variables by establishing higher durability of behavioral change. In the field of autism research, it is common to target a dependent variable that focuses on either increasing adaptive skills (such as social skills, verbal language, academic, health skills, and daily living skills) or reducing destructive/problem behaviors (such as hitting, biting, wounding, screaming, and engaging in off-task behavior). While PC is commonly used to evaluate intervention effectiveness, recent studies suggest that PC levels are associated with improved maintenance and generalization of trained behaviors. Additionally, emerging research highlights the potential of PC in calculating intervention effect sizes, offering a new perspective on assessing clinical significance.

Given the importance of PC in establishing evidence-based practices, this book aims to provide a comprehensive discussion on how to determine optimal PC levels for various skill domains in autistic individuals. By synthesizing existing research and offering practical guidance, the book equips researchers and practitioners with the necessary tools in terms of assigning PC levels to evaluate interventions with greater accuracy and ensure socially meaningful behavioral change.

This book examines contemporary technologically saturated life and argues that decline is not approaching but already underway. It names current reality as immediate modernity and defines its dominant state as The Decline: a loop where digital technology and capitalism reinforce one another while eroding meaning, stability, and future direction. The chapters trace how acceleration shifts from promise to paralysis: systems upgrade, yet social life repeats, exhausts, and frays. Drawing on social theory and cultural critique, the analysis follows platforms, artificial intelligence, crisis driven media, and data economies as they reshape identity, attention, and affect. Anxiety is reframed not as personal malfunction but as a rational response to structural conditions that demand constant productivity while delivering diminishing returns. Rather than predicting collapse, the book reveals how decline is presented as progress itself, and offers a diagnostic framework for understanding burnout, digital culture, technocapitalism, and experiences of lost futures.
