This volume is a collection of new work on the significance of consciousness: in what ways does conscious experience matter, and why? Many have thought that consciousness is not merely a theoretically puzzling phenomenon, but that it is important morally, epistemically, or in other ways. For example, this is a key reason why people care how consciousness is distributed: do animals, insects or even near future AIs have it? But in what sense (if at all) is this true, and why? And how does this relate to our view of what consciousness is? Do different theories of consciousness have different implications for how it matters? Does the view that consciousness reduces to a physical state of the brain imply that it does not matter in the way we think it does? The Importance of Being Conscious brings together a variety of perspectives on these questions from leading theorists in ethics and philosophy of mind.

This comprehensive Handbook will change the current mindset about sibling relationships-from a relationship of secondary importance to parent-child relationships-to one that reflects the many ways siblings contribute to individual development and family functioning throughout the life course and across diverse cultural contexts. As it presents the growing body of research on sibling relationships, it offers a new sibling-informed theoretical framework that challenges traditional notions of the sibling bond as one based on hostility, rivalry, and conflict. New directions are offered for research and practice that will address the real needs of families. This Handbook is relevant to all researchers and mental health practitioners.

Examining the inequities that continue to impede health equity and those who champion it, this book advocates a new framework for global health and wellness based on Indigenous American psychology and culture.

Throughout history, intergenerational detriments to health, including colonialism, environmental degradation, poverty, racism, unrestrained materialism, and violence, have impeded efforts to advance global health equity. The COVID-19 pandemic has only capitalized on these inequities and exposed considerable weaknesses in addressing collective, global health concerns.

Using an Indigenous American framework, this book promotes a new understanding of how to reclaim and sustain health equity. An Indigenous paradigm views the natural world as inextricably connected and envisions a holistic model of health linked to egalitarian relationships with others and the environment. This book presents students and practitioners with a new method of addressing health equity-one which does not operate under the same cultural assumptions that created widespread inequities in the first place.

Written by global, multidisciplinary experts, Responsibility for Extreme Beliefs and Behaviors explores the relation between responsibility and extreme beliefs and behaviors. The book is divided into three parts. The first part examines the issue of who or what is responsible, such as individuals, groups, the community, or even structural factors. It also addresses how individual responsibility relates to group responsibility. The second part concerns agency and various kinds of responsibility. It studies to what extent we can ascribe agency, both moral and epistemic, to extremists, and explores how epistemic agency depends on cognitive and affective capacities, self-knowledge, and intellectual self-trust, self-esteem, and self-respect. Moreover, it examines which environments foster extreme beliefs and behaviors and whether extremists and terrorists can be described as evil and how that bears on responsibility. The third and final part investigates when responsibility attributions are appropriate. It looks at various excusing and exculpating conditions of individual or group responsibility for extreme beliefs. It studies indoctrination and how much room it leaves for responsibility, and considers factors such as experiencing peer pressure, being in an epistemic bubble or echo chamber, and living in a society dealing with fake news and propaganda, and to what extent such factors can provide an excuse. In doing so, it takes not only the legal but equally the moral and epistemic dimensions of responsibility into account and how these relate to one another.

This edited volume brings together scholars from diverse theoretical traditions to present and discuss their perspective on theory-building in psychology. Amid ongoing discussions about a potential (theory) crisis in the discipline, this collection offers a timely and comprehensive overview of key debates. It serves as a foundation for further reflection and future research.

The book consists of three parts. The chapters in the first part analyse conceptual and philosophical issues underlying theory- and model-building in psychology. By contextualizing the debate with historical and interdisciplinary arguments, these chapters provide a framework for further discussion. The second part is dedicated to the challenges that emerge when inquiring into the nature of theory- and model-building in psychology. Psychology faces a unique set of meta-scientific concerns that any attempt at solution needs to recognize. Such attempts are discussed in the third part of the book. The book concludes with a final chapter, in which the individual contributions are situated within the current debate on theory- and model-building in psychology.

Chapter 4 and Chapter 21 are available open access under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License via link.springer.com.

This book examines contemporary technologically saturated life and argues that decline is not approaching but already underway. It names current reality as immediate modernity and defines its dominant state as The Decline: a loop where digital technology and capitalism reinforce one another while eroding meaning, stability, and future direction. The chapters trace how acceleration shifts from promise to paralysis: systems upgrade, yet social life repeats, exhausts, and frays. Drawing on social theory and cultural critique, the analysis follows platforms, artificial intelligence, crisis driven media, and data economies as they reshape identity, attention, and affect. Anxiety is reframed not as personal malfunction but as a rational response to structural conditions that demand constant productivity while delivering diminishing returns. Rather than predicting collapse, the book reveals how decline is presented as progress itself, and offers a diagnostic framework for understanding burnout, digital culture, technocapitalism, and experiences of lost futures.

This book is about psychiatric nursing in Bangladesh. Bangladesh, a densely populated South Asian nation with around 170 million people, has recently transitioned to a lower-middle-income country, yet it faces a significant dual burden of communicable and non-communicable diseases. There is an extreme shortage of nurses in Bangladesh where currently (as of February 2023) 77,838 registered nurses are available. As per a cautious projection, the demand for nurses will be 483,000 in 2030. The latest estimate revealed that there are 0.43 psychiatric nurses for every 100,000 patients. Currently, no textbook is available in Bangladesh specifically focused on psychiatric nursing, despite the country's urgent need for mental health education. This book would provide basic insights and culturally relevant skills to help bridge the health services in the country. Offering localized content, practical case studies, and context-specific interventions will equip the next generation of nurses to better serve the mental health needs of Bangladeshi communities. There is no similar book in the market on psychiatric nursing in Bangladesh. Hence this will be the first book of its kind according to the curriculum of BSc Nursing in Bangladesh.

Written for aspiring and prospective psychoanalysts and psychotherapists, this book provides an in-depth exploration of what psychoanalytic training entails and what motivates one to undergo this extensive training. Analytic training is rigorous, expensive, and time-consuming, yet despite the prestige it may afford, provides little or no assurance of professional success. An Analyst in Training follows the experience of author Graeme Daniels, a mid-career psychotherapist, who has undergone training in San Francisco, California, USA while maintaining an ongoing consultation practice with a training candidate in Lisbon, Portugal. It covers institutional policies (and politics), program graduation requirements, and training standards, as well as their interplay with COVID-era restrictions and diversity, equity, and inclusion issues. Daniels brings an international and historical flavor to these topics, with his distinctively satirical yet sincere voice.

This book examines the critical function of being able to think and respond fluidly. Rigid patterns-like rumination, narrow ways of interpreting events, or behavioral avoidance-are often linked to problems such as anxiety, depression, eating disorders and obsessive compulsive spectrum disorders. Because of this, many effective therapies focus on helping people broaden their thinking and try new, healthier behaviors. This book brings together research from both science and clinical practice to explain what flexibility is and why it matters for mental health. It translates recent scientific findings into practical guidance for therapists and highlights current treatment approaches that target inflexible thinking and behavior.

Does the mind consist only of conscious experiences, or do mental states extend beyond awareness to unconscious brain states with genuine representational content? This second volume in Jerome C. Wakefield's trilogy immerses readers in one of the most enduring debates in intellectual history-the multi-century dispute over unconscious mental states. Beginning with Descartes' consciousness criterion and Leibniz's divisibility argument, Wakefield reconstructs successive rounds of argument through Locke, Mill, and others, culminating in a dialectical confrontation between Freud and William James and a novel argument for the importance of dreams in the debate.

Building on Volume 1's analysis of Freud's conceptual and theoretical arguments, this book examines the empirical dimension: whether phenomena such as memory, unnoticed mental states, gaps in reasoning, post-hypnotic suggestion, and dreams demonstrate unconscious mentation. Wakefield situates Freud's position within the philosophy-of-mind tradition and shows how Freud's synthesis helped pivot psychology from Cartesianism to a representational view of mind that underpins modern cognitive science.

Combining historical depth with analytic rigor, this volume clarifies what was at stake, what was established, and what remains unresolved-namely, the missing criterion for unconscious representation. Essential reading for scholars and advanced students in philosophy of mind, psychoanalysis, and the history of psychology, it also sets the stage for Volume 3's engagement with post-Freudian analytic philosophy.

This book is an accessible primer focused on the provision of neuro-affirming clinical care for autistic clients, written from the perspective of autistic clinicians. In eight chapters, this book provides actionable steps without the assumption of expert autism knowledge. It first builds foundational knowledge for understanding what autism is and how to talk about it using current language practices. This book then explains how to recognize and assess for autism, alongside overviewing co-occurring mental health concerns among this population. This book also includes strategies for effective communication and interventions with autistic individuals, supporting autistic individuals day-to-day, and maintaining ethical clinical practices. Broadening beyond individual clients, this book additionally outlines strategies for supporting families and caregivers of autistic individuals, with an emphasis on the importance of understanding the impact that autism may have on family dynamics. This book is the answer for clinicians asking themselves how they can better serve their autistic clients.

This book is about suicidal behavior in Bangladesh. Suicidal behavior is a major; however, an under-researched public health problem in Bangladesh. The country still lacks a national suicide surveillance system, a national suicide prevention strategy. Therefore, access to quality suicide data for policymaking is a fundamental challenge. There are wide variations in the suicide rate as per different studies and international reports. Additionally, there is a strong possibility of under-reporting of suicidal behavior in the country. Suicide attempt is a criminal offense in the legal system of the country that certainly hinders the disclosure of suicidal behavior. A high level of stigma, lower level of suicide literacy, enduring culture, Muslim majority religious background, criminality badge, patriarchal social norms, and intimate partner violence affect suicide prevention in Bangladesh. Fortunately, an increased number of studies are coming out in the current decade exploring multiple aspects of suicidal behavior indicting that social factors have a prominent role than the mental disorder which is a noticeable difference in the country from the Western findings. Therefore, this book aims to discuss suicidal behavior in Bangladesh based on existing evidence and expertise covering epidemiology, sources of quality data, local culture, forensic and legal aspects, health and mental health care, media and suicide, crisis management system, suicide prevention, and status of evidence in the country. This book is the first of its kind to address multiple aspects of suicidal behavior in Bangladesh.

Well-being has become a central concern in contemporary societies, particularly in the face of rapid social change, growing inequalities, and increasing mental health challenges across the lifespan. This book offers a comprehensive, multidisciplinary, and internationally grounded exploration of well-being, positioning it as a dynamic, relational, and context-dependent construct that evolves from early life to older adulthood.

Bringing together scholars from psychology, education, health, and the social sciences, the volume is structured into five thematic parts that reflect the complexity of human development and the diverse contexts in which well-being is shaped. The first part establishes a strong theoretical foundation, integrating perspectives from Positive Psychology, neurobiology and personality research, while also addressing key issues in the assessment of well-being, including the PERMA Profiler.

The second part focuses on well-being in childhood and adolescence, emphasizing comprehensive and preventive approaches that highlight the role of early relationships, health care, sport, and interprofessional strategies in promoting healthy development. The third part then examines adolescence and emerging adulthood as critical periods for positive development.

The fourth part explores well-being in adulthood through a diversity of specific contexts, including eco-anxiety, labor participation, transitions from education to work, physical activity, chronic illness, artistic engagement, and pregnancy and childbirth. The final part focuses on positive aging, offering integrative perspectives on flourishing, caregiving, dependency, and mental health in later life.

A distinctive strength of this volume lies in its integrative lifespan perspective, its strong empirical grounding, and its explicit attention to sociocultural and contextual diversity, particularly from Latin American and international perspectives. This book will be a valuable resource for researchers, practitioners, and graduate students seeking evidence-based frameworks and applied insights to understand, assess, and promote well-being across diverse populations and life stages.

The AI Memory Machine tells the story of the forces and consequences of the twenty-first century's AI machinic revolution of memory. Generative AI has turbocharged the technologies of memory to find, capture, and mine the individual as the pre-eminent commodity of this age. It is a paradoxical set of social and technological conditions for memory, guided by the framework of capitalism. Your past is already digitally marketed and exploited, with every message, like, and swipe accumulating a life already shared, traceable, hackable, saleable, and memorable. This new AI industry of memory determines who controls the memory machine, through the apps, platforms, devices, and services, which enable our capturing, sharing, and re-generation of data and information about ourselves and experiences. This work tackles these machinic and human transformations through engaging in interdisciplinary sociological and human science approaches to memory studies. Drawing on interviews with experts in the industry of memory, it shows how memory technologies and wider algorithmic processes of data, duplicate, displace, and substitute for the once human. As the AI Memory Machine messes with the cognitive and social forces and boundaries of remembering, is the past already all over? Or does it give new hope in the revelatory potential of what can now be found and seen anew?

This book introduces a novel, symptom-based approach to CBT for psychosis, inspired by internal medicine's treatment of complex syndromes. This manual advocates for individualized treatment planning based on presenting symptom profiles. Written for clinical psychologists, psychiatrists, and mental health practitioners, this resource offers a structured yet flexible framework that adapts to each patient's needs and supports assessment, case formulation, and intervention selection.

It integrates evidence-based CBT techniques for common symptoms and comorbidities of psychosis, including insomnia, depression, and social anxiety. Practical, step-by-step guidance is provided to support symptom management and functional recovery in complex clinical presentations.

Drawing on years of clinical experience, research, and insights from patients themselves, this manual offers a practical approach to managing psychosis through a transdiagnostic, formulation-driven framework for psychotherapy.

This book presents a new approach to physical and mental health based on cognitive orientation (CO) theory-an approach that enables understanding, predicting and changing behaviors in different domains. The major tenet of the CO approach is that cognitive beliefs and theme-specific for the behavior or disorder-function as a motivational disposition for that behavior, thus enabling the prediction of its occurrence and a targeted intervention. This monograph presents the theory and methodology of CO with empirical examples in regard to health-affiliated behaviors (e.g., undergoing medical tests, taking medications), mental disorders (e.g. schizophrenia, depression, addiction, ADHD), physical disorders (e.g., cancer diseases, cardiological disorders, skin disorders), coping behaviors (e.g., resilience, post-traumatic growth), and interventions designed to reduce chances of disease recurrence and enhance quality of life. The objective of the book is to describe the contribution of the CO approach to health and to explore the similarities and differences between the characteristic features of mental and physical disorders. It provides a firm innovative psychological basis for understanding mental and physical disorders and providing adequate psychological help for patients suffering from these disorders--ranging from children to adults to cognitively-challenged individuals. This book will be relevant for psychologists, psychology students, psychotherapists, health psychologists, clinical psychologists, medical doctors, psychiatrists, oncologists, and other medical and health professionals.

This book, the second volume of Creating Tomorrow: Character Strengths and Positive Psychology in the Anthropocene examines how the virtues of Humanity, Justice, Temperance and Transcendence can guide action and orientation in an era marked by environmental disruption, cultural fragmentation and ethical uncertainty. It builds on the foundation of the first volume by shifting the focus from understanding to transformation, showing how strengths support social engagement, ecological responsibility and meaningful responses to planetary change.

Humanity includes love, kindness and social intelligence as capacities that nurture connection with natural and social systems, strengthen compassion and enable cooperative action. Justice brings together teamwork, fairness and leadership as resources for participation, shared responsibility and collaborative approaches to global challenges. Temperance, through forgiveness, humility, prudence and self-regulation, encourages deliberate choices and more conscious ways of living. Transcendence encompasses appreciation of beauty, gratitude, hope, humour and spirituality, deepening emotional resonance, expanding imaginative perspectives and offering orientation in times of profound change.

This book integrates research from environmental psychology, cultural studies, education, ethics and community-based work. Its contributions draw on varied cultural settings to demonstrate how character strengths manifest across contexts and how they can support responsible, relational and future-oriented engagement with the Anthropocene. Addressing scholars, educators and practitioners in psychology, education, sustainability, cultural inquiry and applied ethics, the book combines conceptual clarity with practical relevance. It offers perspectives for reflection, learning and engaged action in conditions of global transformation.

This book explores the critical role of performance criteria (PC) in research and interventions for autistic individuals, emphasizing its function as a moderator between independent and dependent variables by establishing higher durability of behavioral change. In the field of autism research, it is common to target a dependent variable that focuses on either increasing adaptive skills (such as social skills, verbal language, academic, health skills, and daily living skills) or reducing destructive/problem behaviors (such as hitting, biting, wounding, screaming, and engaging in off-task behavior). While PC is commonly used to evaluate intervention effectiveness, recent studies suggest that PC levels are associated with improved maintenance and generalization of trained behaviors. Additionally, emerging research highlights the potential of PC in calculating intervention effect sizes, offering a new perspective on assessing clinical significance.

Given the importance of PC in establishing evidence-based practices, this book aims to provide a comprehensive discussion on how to determine optimal PC levels for various skill domains in autistic individuals. By synthesizing existing research and offering practical guidance, the book equips researchers and practitioners with the necessary tools in terms of assigning PC levels to evaluate interventions with greater accuracy and ensure socially meaningful behavioral change.

As legislation continues to evolve and the stigma surrounding addiction persists, new findings on the impact of substances on the brain are an important public issue. This second edition integrates major developments in human and animal neuroscience to explain how addictive substances and behaviors reshape brain circuits governing reward, stress, habit formation, and self-control. New and enhanced coverage addresses individual differences-including age, sex, stress, pain, comorbidity, and emerging substances-as well as advances in neuroimaging, genetics, and treatment science. Students are supported by learning objectives, real-world examples and applications, review questions, and further reading lists, equipping them with the conceptual tools needed to understand vulnerability, persistence, relapse, and recovery in addiction. Instructors have access to supplementary resources, including lecture slides, review questions and answers, and a test bank.

This open access book is based on a unique body of data on a hitherto understudied field of Pentecostal prayer camps and mental health in Ghana.

The book investigates and presents empirically grounded cases of persons with mental illness and how they deploy religious resources at prayer camps in Ghana in dealing with their illness. Particularly, the book explores perceived causes of mental illness and how such perceptions influence health seeking behaviours. The book illustrates how the perceived causes of mental illness and the healing practices found at prayer camps in Ghana that are meant to deal with the illness appeal very much to Ghanaians because they resonate with indigenous worldviews.

Through Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis of in-depth-interviews with persons afflicted with mental illness and practitioners, this book points out the varied ways in which prayer camps have become a source of authoritative knowledge in Ghana's medical pluralistic society, serving as an "informal" health sector in the provision of health care to persons with mental illnesses. It further highlights the network of relationships between prayer camps and hospitals as new ground of training in "cultural competence" for clinicians in their field of practice in psychiatry. The book proposes the intermediate continuum approach as a new framework or lens for examining the broader role of religion and culture in mental health care. The approach aims at providing a common ground to merge the differences in previous approaches in the studies of culture and mental health and thereby undo the tensions, conflicts, and controversies inherent in such approaches.
