In this concise yet illuminating volume, Giuseppe Craparo explores the work of Pierre Janet, deftly outlining his theory of mind and pioneering studies on dynamic psychology, trauma, and dissociation.

Craparo covers the main concepts of Janet's theory, from disaggregation, fixed ideas, psychic force, and psychic tension to the field of consciousness and subconscious. Working from the view that Janet was not only a forerunner of psychoanalysis, this book shows how his work at the intersection of medicine, philosophy, and experimental psychology retains vital relevance for contemporary practice. This book provides new perspectives on Janet's influence on Freudian and Relational Psychoanalysis, as well as his working relationship with Freud.

Pierre Janet: A Contemporary Introduction is essential reading for practicing psychologists, psychotherapists, and psychoanalysts, as well as students and scholars interested in Janet and his legacy in the fields of psychotraumatology and psychoanalysis.

Myth Psychoanalysis: Freud, Lacan and Levi-Strauss examines the human psyche through the theoretical lenses of three groundbreaking thinkers, exploring how humans craft their symbolic reality.

This innovative work treats the exemplary cases of Freud as myths, parallel to native myths in their structure and the knowledge they harbor. The book reviews what Freud, Lacan and Levi-Strauss would say on various aspects of the human psyche, identifying commonalities and discrepancies while distilling truths that resonate through the intersection of their perspectives. Through twelve comprehensive chapters, the work explores creation myths, kinship relations, totemism, and the structural foundations of meaning-making in both clinical and cultural contexts. The author employs a storytelling style that brings to life fascinating narratives from native myths and psychoanalytic case studies, making complex theoretical concepts accessible through engaging examples and biographical insights.

This book is fascinating reading for psychoanalysts, mental health professionals, and those familiar with Freud, Lacan, or Levi-Strauss who seek to enrich their knowledge and clinical application.

In Technosubjectivities, Ezquerra invites readers to reconsider the core concepts of psychoanalysis-unconscious, body, drive, transitional object, psychosexuality, and the conditions of symbolization-in light of virtual environments and technologically mediated experiences.

Drawing on clinical experience and contemporary culture, the author proposes an innovative psychoanalytic approach for a post-organic clinic. She argues that a new psychoanalytic field is emerging at the crossroads of hybridization, technoculture, and processes of subjectivation. The book explores how subjectivation unfolds at the intersection of human and non-human agencies, animate and inanimate objects, artificial and natural forms, and realities and virtualities. It weaves conceptual argument with detailed clinical case studies, including the encounter between a psychoanalyst and the world's first state-recognised cyborg.

This ground-breaking book is essential reading for clinicians dealing with technology-mediated lives, psychoanalysts, neuroscientists, and readers interested in philosophy, psychoanalysis, anthropology, art, technology, and the humanities and to anyone wishing to reflect on the transformations of our time.

This book defines the concept of cerebral/hemispheric asymmetry and emphasizes its multidisciplinary nature. It describes biological and functional hemispheric asymmetry and its importance in understanding the overall nature of cerebral asymmetry.

Drawing on recent empirical evidence, the book highlights different methods used to examine hemispheric asymmetry and the factors that influence it, such as handedness, gender, aging, and the nature of the task. From a neuropsychological perspective on emotions, it integrates three different approaches: specific populations (unilateral focal brain-damaged patients and neurologically intact brain subjects), behavioral measures (split-field presentation, dichotic listening tasks, and spatial tasks), and response measures (speed and accuracy), along with physiological and neuroimaging techniques (EEG, CT, PET, MRI, and fMRI) to provide a more comprehensive understanding of hemispheric asymmetry in processing facial expressions of emotion. Furthermore, the book highlights the clinical and theoretical significance of this research and outlines the future direction in the research.

This book would be useful to the students, researchers, and teachers from the fields of neuropsychology, neuroscience, cognitive neuroscience, psychology, and rehabilitation. The book would also prove to be an essential guide for policy makers.

This compelling collection shines a light on the personal, professional, and organisational challenges that shape life in schools, revealing how a deeper understanding can build a more emotionally intelligent school culture.

The book delves into the psychological and emotional aspects of working in schools and navigating what can be complex and multi-layered relationships with fellow staff, students, and parents. Each contributor applies their considerable knowledge of school dynamics and explores the ways in which our past - conscious or unconscious, remembered or forgotten - shapes our interactions with others, for better or worse. Drawing directly on lived experience, the book explores peer relationships, approaches to understanding students' mental health and its impact, and the ways in which parents' own histories - especially of education - may help or hinder effective home-school collaboration. Chapters conclude with reflective questions for personal and professional growth, sparking curiosity and prompting the reader to better understand the complexities of everyday relationships.

Knowing ourselves, understanding how relationships work, and making sense of the links between family and institutional dynamics can make a real difference to how we experience the workplace as well as how we get on more generally. Refreshingly conversational in style and applicable to every sphere of life, this volume will be valuable reading for trainee and early career teachers, line managers, support staff, and therapists, especially those offering supervision or consultations to school staff.

Between Genius and Tragedy: A Psychoanalytic Portrait of Viktor Tausk offers a compelling intellectual biography and a nuanced psychoanalytic exploration of Tausk's character and thought, tracing both his theoretical-clinical innovations and the personal struggles that shaped his life and enduring significance.

Drawing on extensive archival research and newly documented material - including family sources, photographs, and testimonies made available by a direct descendant - Francisco Balbuena Rivera opens by asking why Tausk still matters. The book revisits the historical debate surrounding his figure, examining the divergent narratives constructed by Kurt R. Eissler and Paul Roazen and critically reassessing the interpretative frameworks through which his reputation has been shaped. Rather than imposing a definitive verdict, it analyses these competing accounts and invites readers to form their own judgment.

The volume situates Tausk within his familial, cultural, and intellectual milieu before offering a substantial biographical reconstruction. From the formation of his Jewish identity within the intergenerational context of the Tausk family to his immersion in the psychoanalytic movement and search for intellectual recognition, it follows the decisive stages of his development. It provides the first systematic analysis of his participation in the scientific meetings of the Vienna Psychoanalytic Society, examining both his formal presentations and his interventions in discussion. Particular attention is devoted to Freud's refusal to analyze Tausk, Helene Deutsch's failed treatment, and the circumstances surrounding his suicide.

The final part reexamines Tausk's contributions to sexuality, psychosis, repression, and defensive processes, as well as to the psychology of the deserter, situating his theoretical-clinical production within broader contemporary psychoanalytic, ethical, and philosophical contexts.

By shedding new light not only on Tausk himself but also on questions of exclusion, memory, and the politics of psychoanalytic history, this book repositions him within the Freudian tradition and will be indispensable for scholars and students of psychoanalysis, psychology, psychiatry, and twentieth-century intellectual history, as well as for psychoanalysts and culturally informed readers engaged in its ongoing development.

Developing Cultural Sensitivity in Psychosexual Therapy is a pioneering compilation that provides a comprehensive exploration of the intricate relationship between cultural diversity and human sexuality.

Featuring contributions from renowned psychosexual therapists and medical experts from Asia, the Middle East, Africa, and Europe, each chapter will delve into the unique challenges, practices, and insights related to psychosexual work within specific cultural contexts, particularly with a range of diverse communities. The book offers a rich tapestry of real-life scenarios and illustrations in work with a range of diverse clients including Black, LGBTQ, Orthodox Jew, Muslim, Observant Hindu, Sikh, and more. A great deal of attention is given to the seamless integration of scientific data with socio-cultural realities, treating readers to an immersive exploration that transcends conventional boundaries. Arguing that psychosexual relational therapy is historically impacted by colonialism, the book challenges a "one size fits all," mono-normative, Eurocentric approach, offering instead how to integrate social justice concerns both practically and philosophically.

This unique synthesis of scholarly insight, lived experience, and clinical expertise makes this book a compelling read for any psychosexual or relational therapist.

This edited volume features a diverse, eclectic range of voices exploring affect theory in relation to psychotherapy, culture and philosophy.

The 1990s saw the beginning of the affective turn, an important cultural shift which influenced to a considerable degree the arts, politics and culture in general but failed to reach the world of psychotherapy. What would it be like if practices such as psychotherapy took more fully on board the importance of affect? Based on the outcome of a series of seminars led by Manu Bazzano over the course of 2020-2025, this edited volume aims to break new ground by drawing on affect theory, queer and feminist theory, literature and art to outline new ways of practicing psychotherapy and supervision, of doing research and of engaging more creatively and effectively with the political challenges of our time.

The Primacy of Affect: Psychotherapy, Culture, Philosophy will benefit anyone working within or interested in psychotherapy, psychoanalysis, critical theory, contemporary philosophy, politics, the arts and literature.

In Writings for a Liberation Psychoanalysis, Robert K. Beshara establishes a groundbreaking framework that links the Freudo-Lacanian tradition directly to transmodernity and decoloniality. Traditional psychoanalytic institutions have long been tethered to colonial logic, often pathologizing the marginalized rather than challenging the structures that oppress them, but Beshara shows how psychoanalysis can be a tool for liberation.

By re-thinking psychoanalysis from the Exterior perspective of the oppressed, Beshara argues that the radical seeds of liberation are extimate or already present within the praxis-waiting to be activated through ethical listening and free association. This work synthesizes the transformative insights of scholars such as Edward Said, Paulo Freire, and Enrique Dussel to develop a "Psychoanalysis of the Oppressed" or "Liberation Psychoanalysis." More than just a theoretical intervention, this book offers a roadmap for liberation as an analectical materialist praxis-a way to theorize oppression and prefigure a concrete utopian horizon by politicizing the unconscious from within the core of a crumbling empire.

This book is designed for undergraduate and postgraduate students, scholars, and professionals interested in psychoanalysis, liberation, and decoloniality. It would be particularly suitable for courses on Liberation Philosophy, Liberation Psychology, Decoloniality, Postcolonialism, and Radical Psychoanalysis.

This book explores extreme experiences in psychoanalysis and examines how to work with and understand such experiences both theoretically and practically.

It invites readers into new, transformative quantum frontiers of psychoanalytic thought and clinical experience. Taking her profound work as the heart of the conversation, Eshel and a distinguished range of authors examine the essence of the great unknown in diverse realms of psychoanalysis-from massively traumatic states and enigmatic telepathic dreams to the sudden, shattering death of a patient. They focus on the decisive shift from classical psychoanalysis and its epistemological boundaries to the traumatic, the catastrophic, and the unknowable-charting an ontological-experiential, quantum frontier of analytic work. Inspired by Winnicott and Bion, yet reaching beyond them, these contributions open both mind and heart to a dimension of radical presence and deeply transformative forms of analytic oneness, making possible encounters with even the most seemingly unreachable patients.

This is essential reading for psychoanalysts and psychotherapists seeking to extend the reach of psychoanalytic treatment and to work with some of the most difficult clinical situations.

Educating Anxiety explores how anxiety can be transformed from a debilitating force into a creative and formative presence in students' lives and offers practical ideas for doing so in the context of higher education.

Taking anxiety as an intrinsic part of the human experience, the book examines the impact of neoliberal pressures, social media and institutional structures on students' anxiety. Through five insightful essays, it provides readers with concrete frameworks to understand anxiety's creative potential, drawing on philosophical insights from Kierkegaard, Heidegger, and others, as well as theological perspectives, psychological analysis and pedagogical strategies for helping students channel anxiety into intellectual and personal growth.

This volume is essential reading for educators, professional psychologists and counsellors at colleges and universities seeking to address student anxiety through a deepened understanding of the teaching and learning process. It is also a vital resource for researchers and scholars in psychology, philosophy, theology and education interested in exploring how anxiety can be reimagined beyond pathology as a formative presence in human lives.

Nonbinary Life is an invitation to imagine the possibilities of life outside of gender.

To write, to think, to imagine, to agitate, and to love without regard for gender is to lead a non-binary life. In this genre-defying work of autotheory, Marquis Bey proposes a radical refusal: to relinquish gender as a framework we carry - for ourselves and for others - and to embrace modes of being that exist outside of its grasp.

Spanning questions of pronouns, masculinity, love, family, language, and even the Redwood National Forest, Nonbinary Life blends memoir and theory to provide a philosophical meditation on what it means to live beyond the binary

How Psychotherapy Works synthesizes recent science to provide an accessible, practical, and clinically relevant understanding of the infrastructure underlying the hundreds of therapies in current use. In joining the best of modern neuroscience with a warm-hearted understanding of human troubles, the book guides beginning and experienced therapists to better therapy through clarity about what is happening now and what to do next.

Both groundbreaking and paradigmatic, the book extends modern concepts of memory reconsolidation and thinking fast and slow to bring to light the nonconscious world where problematic patterns are frozen in time, waiting for empathic connection with a therapist. The final section of the book gives the reader a simple but sophisticated, science-based set of questions to apply to real-world pathology and therapeutic goals.

This is a unique text that explores quantum-like modelling frameworks that connect quantum mechanics with cognitive science and consciousness studies to propose a new ontological framework that transcends traditional boundaries between physics, philosophy, and cognitive science. The book develops along two complementary paths. First, it explores quantum-like modelling, an exciting emerging field where researchers apply logical and mathematical structures from quantum mechanics and information theory to cognitive modelling and decision science. Second, it investigates the profound links between quantum science and consciousness studies, incorporating insights from advanced mathematical frameworks such as category theory. By synthesizing these two approaches, the authors propose a novel framework termed 'quantum-like reality' that moves beyond pragmatic modelling to offer deeper ontological thinking that can enrich both foundational understanding and applied research. This will be an interesting read for students and researchers working at the intersection of quantum physics, cognitive science, and consciousness studies.

ACT for Sport and Performance examines how to apply Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) to various scenarios in sport and performance psychology. By capturing the theoretical underpinnings and the practical applications of ACT in sport, this book highlights how ACT encourages a switch in attention from an internal state to the relevant task so the athlete can behave like the athlete they want to be.

This cutting-edge textbook details how ACT can be used across various presenting problems in sport psychology, such as confidence, motivation, team cohesion, and injury rehabilitation. It brings together and presents the work of key senior sport psychologists using ACT in their practice who share their working methods, exercises, and cases to inspire the reader to use ACT in their work. Chapters provide an overview of the theoretical underpinning of ACT, as well as case study examples demonstrating the application of ACT to common and uncommon performance scenarios.

Aimed at students, academics, practitioners, and coaches of sport psychology, ACT for Sport and Performance is key reading for all those interested in applied and performance sport psychology and related disciplines.

While the conversation surrounding climate change often focuses on environmental degradation, economic implications, and policy reforms, an equally critical aspect is emerging: the effects of climate change on mental health and psychosocial well-being. The increasing frequency and intensity of climate-related disasters, such as droughts, hurricanes, and wildfires, not only disrupt communities and ecosystems but also take a significant toll on the mental health of individuals, leaving scars that are both visible and invisible. Those affected by these calamities often experience feelings of loss, anxiety, and helplessness as they grapple with the immediate aftermath of destruction and the long-term impacts on their lives. Research has documented heightened levels of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, and anxiety among survivors of such events. The emotional tumult triggered by the loss of homes, livelihoods, and loved ones poses a daunting psychological challenge that cannot be overlooked.

This new volume, Climate Change and Its Effects on Mental Well-Being, brings together insights from various disciplines, including psychology, environmental science, sociology, public health, and climate policy, to provide a holistic view of the climate-mental health nexus. By analyzing case studies from dozens of countries and climate disasters and reviewing existing literature, the author identifies best practices and innovative solutions for addressing mental health challenges in the context of climate change. The book highlights the intricate links between climate change and mental health while also promoting the development of effective psychosocial support systems that are essential for fostering recovery in the aftermath of climate-related disasters and building resilience in communities as they confront an uncertain future.

The volume sheds light on the multidimensional impacts of climate change on mental health, recognizing that these effects can be both direct and indirect. It looks at displacement and trauma caused by climate disasters, the stress associated with economic instability in affected regions, and the psychological burden of climate-related grief. It also considers the disparities that exist in how different communities experience these impacts, emphasizing the need for culturally sensitive and accessible psychosocial support tailored to the unique experiences of diverse populations.

This volume should be essential for practicing and soon-to-be mental health professionals as well as for those working at disaster relief organizations, as the number and cost (both monetary and mental) of climate-related disasters will continue to increase in the coming decades.

Psychotherapy for Climate Change explores the complex ways in which climate change is both exacerbating and being fueled by modern society's epidemic of loneliness and social isolation.

Chapters include both research and personal accounts to help the reader deepen their understanding of different perspectives on climate change. The book makes the case for using tools from various types of cognitive behavioral psychotherapy to foster collaboration in addressing the climate crisis.

This book offers insights that will help readers gain an understanding of the ways in which emotions and patterns of thinking can impact their capacity for connecting with others about environmental concerns. The book also presents practical tools for strengthening social connections among those who want to contribute to a solution and between environmental advocates and those who deny that the problem exists.

Cognitive Science and the Reconceptualization of Social Theory explores how core social science ideas can be naturalized and reconceptualized through the lens of cognitive science. It bridges the gap between emerging cognitive research and established social theory by demonstrating how concepts central to sociology and related fields can be understood in cognitive science terms. This book's distinctive approach lies in its deep historical engagement with social science concepts, tracing their development from classical social theory through to contemporary debates. It examines the tensions between traditional computational approaches and newer 4E (embodied, embedded, enacted, and extended) cognitive theories, while addressing why social sciences have been slow to engage with cognitive science. This book is aimed at scholars and postgraduate students working at the intersection of social science and cognitive science, including sociologists, philosophers, cognitive scientists, and researchers in emerging interdisciplinary fields like social neuroscience. It will particularly appeal to those seeking to understand how traditional social theory can engage with contemporary cognitive research without losing its conceptual richness.

Attachment, Climate Crisis and the Natural World is the first book to consider the psychological and social impact of global warming through the lens of Attachment Theory. The contributors reflect on our relationship with the natural world from the perspective of Bowlby's major themes, including the nature and primacy of the attachment instinct for survival, the secure base, separation anxiety, maternal deprivation, loss and mourning. The therapeutic value of renewing our relationship with, and respect for, the natural world we are part of is explored, as is working with psychotherapy clients who are troubled by the climate emergency and suffering caused around the world by continued reckless plundering of natural resources. Attachment, Climate Crisis and the Natural World will offer valuable insights for psychoanalysts, psychotherapists, counsellors, psychologists, environmental activists, and anyone concerned about our relationship with the natural world in times of ecological crisis.

The Moral Psychology of Fear brings together contemporary philosophers to consider how fear can shape or compromise moral motivation, and in particular the ways in which fear might motivate morally and politically troubling actions for individuals and communities. While the topics addressed by the chapters vary widely, the contributors share a commitment to analyzing the moral significance of fear for motivation, action, and responsibility in novel and creative ways.

Edited by Ami Harbin, the volume is divided into four parts: In Part I, authors lay the groundwork for new philosophical analyses of fear by establishing some theoretical considerations about the connection of fear to injustice and the scope of what kinds of experiences count as fear. Part II turns to everyday experiences of fear-like fear of missing out and fear of one's own death-that can have surprising moral implications. Part III delves into the way fears have been present in contexts of climate and public health crisis. Part IV offers reflections on the complex position of fear in some of the most charged political issues facing communities: migration, political polarization, violence, and oppressive ideologies more broadly.

This open access book offers a critical appraisal of psychological research on creativity and insight, challenging the tautology that creative people have creative ideas. Instead, it demonstrates how insights emerge through interactive engagement with manipulable objects-physical or digital.

The author outlines an alternative methodology to trace the co-constitutive interaction between people and things. Using video analysis, he reveals creativity as distributed across person-object systems, with participants accomplishing insight through observable practices: moving, constructing, responding to what emerges. The focus shifts from analyzing cognitive processes to exploring how ideas stem from interaction with prototypes. Causal directionality is reversed: through making, ideas are discovered. A groundbreaking reflection on creativity and its dialogue with objects, this short monograph is an essential read for researchers in cognitive psychology, creativity studies, design, business, innovation management, and cognitive ethnography.

This edited collection offers a distinctive contribution to death studies by foregrounding analytical autoethnographic narratives from researchers and practitioners actively engaged in the field. Unlike works centred on personal bereavement, it explores the emotional and psychological residue left by prolonged scholarly encounters with death, dying, and end-of-life phenomena. The project's uniqueness lies in its multidisciplinary scope, international authorship, and integration of creative artifacts alongside textual analysis. It challenges conventional notions of subjectivity in qualitative research, reframing it as a vital, dialogic presence rather than bias. Contributors reflect on their own affective responses-grief, memory, sensory experience-while researching death spaces, death work, and the inheritance of death through ritual and conversation. The collection addresses a gap in scholarship by examining how researchers and practitioners are shaped by their fieldwork, offering therapeutic and introspective insights. Its organization around key thematic areas, and its cultural diversity, make it a valuable resource for scholars across disciplines, most notably death studies and (auto)ethnographic research, and anyone seeking to understand the complex interplay of emotion, memory, and research.

Updated third edition covering every step of Experience Sampling Method research

As obvious as it may sound, the essence of human experience - our thoughts, emotions, behaviours and social interactions - plays out in the course of everyday life.

Experience Sampling Methodology (ESM) is the gold standard for studying people's experiences in their everyday environments. In this third edition of The Open Handbook, experts from the Center for Research on Experience Sampling and Ambulatory Methods Leuven (REAL) provide up-to-date, empirically based advice for designing, conducting and analysing ESM studies.

This comprehensive guide walks readers through every step of ESM research: from formulating research questions and optimally designing ESM studies and questionnaires, to addressing ethical considerations and practical issues such as power calculations, software choices and briefing/debriefing procedures. It also covers preprocessing and analysing intensive longitudinal data and explores future applications of ESM.

Each chapter of this third edition has been updated with the latest methodological developments and insights, and a new chapter on dyadic ESM research has been added. Ideal for both novice and expert researchers, this handbook is an invaluable resource for anyone embarking on ESM research.

This book aims to rescue Baldwin's concept of persistent imitation. Through persistent imitation, Baldwin explained the major mechanism under which human development happens by investigating the origin of consciousness with important implications for psychology. Based on persistent imitation, this book addresses adult human development in innovative educational contexts to portray how innovation can be a trigger for development for teachers and how they came about to produce innovations. The fields of education and psychology cross the work and represent a current trend in educational systems toward innovation. However, innovation is designed from a historical perspective in order to challenge the ever-new production and the homogenous appeal of innovation concerning technological improvements and prepacked projects.

This work is framed from a developmental perspective in psychology based on cultural-historical theoretical traditions. It considers James Mark Baldwin as one of the forerunners of current human development science with an interdisciplinary agenda.
