Higher education faculty often differ in age from the students in their courses, and these age differences may relate to social and cultural differences. As an aspect of culture, different social groups adopt different slang vocabularies. For these reasons, an understanding of generational differences in slang is relevant to university-level teaching. We explore the nature and characteristics of slang in comparison to other types of language variation as well as the multiple functions that slang serves, both linguistic and social. Next, we examine the concept of generations and education-relevant characteristics that are associated with recent generations. We then connect slang to the concept of code-switching, followed by an examination of slang associated with Generation Z and Generation Alpha. Finally, we consider the implications of generational slang for university level teaching and learning. Generational slang is not just a challenge for university faculty, but also an opportunity.

This comprehensive and integrative guide to the evolution of human culture offers a unified introduction to one of today's most dynamic interdisciplinary fields. Drawing on research from the Stockholm School of Cultural Evolution, it explains how complex human cultures arise from simple learning mechanisms and social interactions. Across eleven accessible chapters, leading scholars trace the deep origins of culture in animal behavior, explore the evolution of language and technology, model the spread of ideas and norms, and examine how large-scale cultural systems emerge and transform. Bridging biology, psychology, archaeology, linguistics, intellectual history, and complex-systems science, this volume demonstrates how minimalist, domain-general principles can account for the extraordinary diversity of human cultures. Written for students and researchers across the social sciences, humanities, and natural sciences, it provides a coherent, up-to-date framework for understanding what culture is and how it changes.

This edited collection offers a distinctive contribution to death studies by foregrounding analytical autoethnographic narratives from researchers and practitioners actively engaged in the field. Unlike works centred on personal bereavement, it explores the emotional and psychological residue left by prolonged scholarly encounters with death, dying, and end-of-life phenomena. The project's uniqueness lies in its multidisciplinary scope, international authorship, and integration of creative artifacts alongside textual analysis. It challenges conventional notions of subjectivity in qualitative research, reframing it as a vital, dialogic presence rather than bias. Contributors reflect on their own affective responses-grief, memory, sensory experience-while researching death spaces, death work, and the inheritance of death through ritual and conversation. The collection addresses a gap in scholarship by examining how researchers and practitioners are shaped by their fieldwork, offering therapeutic and introspective insights. Its organization around key thematic areas, and its cultural diversity, make it a valuable resource for scholars across disciplines, most notably death studies and (auto)ethnographic research, and anyone seeking to understand the complex interplay of emotion, memory, and research.

The book discusses consciousness and several theories that attempt to explain the phenomenon. So far, no one has been able to explain how the brain creates consciousness, mainly because no way has been discovered to measure it. The book's main innovations are as follows:
(1) A coherent treatment of two types of explanatory models relevant to consciousness. The first, a mechanistic model, is used in the natural sciences and has been accepted in psychology. The second, a mentalistic model, is based on the individual's inner world (e.g., will, belief, intention).
(2) Description of a theoretical model which proposes that sensory stimulation is initially processed automatically and unconsciously, and explains the transition from non-conscious to conscious states and vice versa.
(3) Provision of new arguments that explain why highly sophisticated computers or robots have not yet developed consciousness.
(4) Discussion based on the concept of consciousness that explains why psychology has not developed in a way that is similar to the sciences (e.g., physics).

This open access book offers a critical appraisal of psychological research on creativity and insight, challenging the tautology that creative people have creative ideas. Instead, it demonstrates how insights emerge through interactive engagement with manipulable objects-physical or digital.

The author outlines an alternative methodology to trace the co-constitutive interaction between people and things. Using video analysis, he reveals creativity as distributed across person-object systems, with participants accomplishing insight through observable practices: moving, constructing, responding to what emerges. The focus shifts from analyzing cognitive processes to exploring how ideas stem from interaction with prototypes. Causal directionality is reversed: through making, ideas are discovered. A groundbreaking reflection on creativity and its dialogue with objects, this short monograph is an essential read for researchers in cognitive psychology, creativity studies, design, business, innovation management, and cognitive ethnography.

This book looks at therapeutic work with children and young people in ways which are distinct from pervasive mainstream conversations. Instead of being an intervention manual, this book focusses on the thought processes which practitioners in education and care settings undertake using vignettes and case studies. The book examines practice-related dilemmas as frequently from the perspective of the practitioner as the child, young person or their family. As such, it reflects the way in which the Mulberry Bush - an award-winning 75-year-old leading charity - functions, by outlining its psychodynamic, reflective and collaborative approach. Often the voice of practitioners (residential care staff, teachers and teaching assistants) is absent from books like this, despite being the individuals working directly with the children and families and whose experience are at the core, and so this title offers an innovative corrective.

Updated third edition covering every step of Experience Sampling Method research

As obvious as it may sound, the essence of human experience - our thoughts, emotions, behaviours and social interactions - plays out in the course of everyday life.

Experience Sampling Methodology (ESM) is the gold standard for studying people's experiences in their everyday environments. In this third edition of The Open Handbook, experts from the Center for Research on Experience Sampling and Ambulatory Methods Leuven (REAL) provide up-to-date, empirically based advice for designing, conducting and analysing ESM studies.

This comprehensive guide walks readers through every step of ESM research: from formulating research questions and optimally designing ESM studies and questionnaires, to addressing ethical considerations and practical issues such as power calculations, software choices and briefing/debriefing procedures. It also covers preprocessing and analysing intensive longitudinal data and explores future applications of ESM.

Each chapter of this third edition has been updated with the latest methodological developments and insights, and a new chapter on dyadic ESM research has been added. Ideal for both novice and expert researchers, this handbook is an invaluable resource for anyone embarking on ESM research.

As artificial intelligence chatbots offer increasingly sophisticated emotional support, society faces a profound question: can a machine truly empathize? Empathy and Artificial Intelligence provides the first comprehensive roadmap for this pivotal moment. Moving beyond simple binaries of 'hype' or 'doom,' this interdisciplinary volume unites leading psychologists, philosophers, and engineers to explore the tangled web of synthetic care. Key chapters investigate the 'AI Advantage' - where machines often outperform humans in perceived empathy - alongside the 'AI Penalty,' where discovering the artifice corrodes trust. The text navigates the distinct landscapes of text-based LLMs and embodied robots, addressing urgent ethical dilemmas and exploring whether reliance on AI risks the atrophy of our moral capacities or enables synthetic agents to scaffold stronger human relationships. Essential for researchers, students, and curious observers, this book investigates whether outsourcing our emotional labor saves us time, or costs us our humanity.

What is introspection and how is it different from other sources of knowledge such as memory, perception and inference? The Introspection Principle offers a novel philosophical picture of introspection on which rational subjects are disposed to form beliefs about their own conscious states much as they are disposed to believe the obvious consequences of their beliefs, to form beliefs in response to the way they perceive the world around them, and to act in accordance with their beliefs; to introspect on this picture just is to form beliefs about conscious states in this way. Daniel Stoljar sets out this rationalist account in detail, formulating it in terms of a proposed principle of rationality, the introspection principle. He explores several ways to interpret the principle, examines the notion of consciousness on which it relies, discusses its relation to other and better-known principles of rationality, and shows how an approach to introspection based on the principle improves on influential alternatives, such as inner sense, acquaintance, inferentialist and constitutivist theories. Stoljar applies the rationalist account to thirteen major problems of introspection drawn from a wide analysis of the literatures in philosophy of mind, epistemology, and cognitive science. These include issues of evidence, transparency, diaphanousness, necessity, privileged access, luminosity, negative introspection, externalism, reasoning, revelation and the self. The Introspection Principle is a systematic presentation of a new approach to introspection that greatly illuminates our understanding of consciousness, rationality, and self-knowledge.

This book reveals shame as a political, biological, and cultural inheritance, an architecture of feeling and power that silently shapes identity, belonging, and survival across South Asian diasporas.

At its core, it reframes shame through five interwoven characteristics: polarisation, hierarchy, intersectionality, weaponisation, and neuroticism, revealing how shame functions both as an emotional wound and a system of social control. It divides communities through caste and intragroup conflict; institutionalises inequality by assigning worth at birth; compounds harm through gender, colourism, class, and religion; and is wielded by dominant groups to maintain power. Internalised shame renders superiority and inferiority natural, even moral, turning difference into danger and kin into adversaries.

Drawing on historical analysis, psychological theory, and cultural narrative, the book shows how shame becomes embedded in the nervous system, carried across generations, and sustained by a conspiracy of silence. Colonialism, Partition, migration, and racism shape inner worlds, producing relational wounds that continue to define South Asian families, communities, and diasporic identities.

Introducing a suite of frameworks, the book offers culturally grounded psychological tools:

* South Asian Typology of Attachment: how early caregiving is shaped by intergenerational shame, duty, honour, caste, and emotional suppression.
* South Asian Ecological Systems theory: how trauma is transmitted through family dynamics, community expectations, caste structures, and ancestral trauma.
* South Asian Acculturation theory: how identity and belonging are negotiated across borders.
* Caste Trauma Transmission Model: how caste, patriarchy, supremacism, and capitalism reproduce trauma and shame across generations.
* South Asian Shame Model: revealing shame as a central organising principle of emotional and relational life, shaping behaviour and culturally patterned psychopathology.

Together, these frameworks move beyond Eurocentric psychology to offer a transformative account of the South Asian psyche. Ultimately, the book calls for breaking silences, challenging hierarchies, and imagining futures grounded in compassion, dignity, justice, and equity.

Mental Means offers a systematic treatment of intentional mental action: what you do intentionally with your mind. You can think of a word to decide on a password, call to mind how something looks to imagine it, or make a judgment to answer a question. When using a mental action as a means in this way, your thoughts can take on greater significance than they would otherwise have. Just one thought can instantiate several types of thought at once, individuated by attitude and content. For instance, one thought can have two distinct propositional contents, or it can be both a judgment and a decision. Antonia Peacocke applies this idea to solve three kinds of puzzles in philosophy of mind and epistemology. First there are action puzzles, which concern the type of agency you can exercise in thought. A judgment can be made intentionally, under a certain description, and so you can exercise agency over what you believe. You can also intentionally conceive a new artistic work by refining an early draft or version. Then there are duality puzzles, which arise when a thought of some kind seems to belong to more than one content-attitude type. This book shows how this works in imagination and knowledgeable self-attribution of belief. Finally, there are process puzzles, which concern the relationship of individual thoughts to ongoing mental processes. The use of mental means clarifies the role of individual judgments in inference and in inquiry. The solutions to these puzzles all emerge from an original foundational theory of intentional action and the practical knowledge it involves.

As international adoption peaked at the turn of the 20th and 21st centuries, research on its outcomes has paralleled that peak in scope and depth. This book provides a comprehensive, integrative analysis of international adoption within its historical, political, and legal frameworks, situating the practice in the context of global child welfare and the search for permanent families. By synthesizing decades of multidisciplinary research, the chapters examine developmental trajectories of internationally adopted individuals from childhood through to adulthood, taking into account physical health, attachment, language, cognition, academic achievement, identity, and mental health. Drawing on diverse methodologies and international samples, the text advances our understanding of resilience, adaptation, and identity in cross-cultural contexts. It also identifies critical gaps and articulates directions for future inquiry, refining developmental theory and informing policy and practice. This essential resource supports researchers, professionals, and graduate students engaged in adoption, child development, and social care.

Religion and spirituality in the family is a burgeoning field of inquiry. This Element begins by providing basic definitions, theoretical underpinnings, and common assessments of religion and spirituality (R/S) within the family. The authors also examine individuals' religious and spiritual (R/S) landscapes in relation to family functioning, and then consider positive psychology dimensions such as gratitude, humility, compassion, and forgiveness within the context of family members' religiousness and spirituality. Finally, interventions focused on R/S in the family unit and children's medical complications in relation to R/S factors and familial functioning are discussed. Conclusions include recommendations for future research and clinical practice to support families via an R/S lens.

Spirituality and religion are powerful dimensions of our psychology as human beings. Decades of research, clinical experience, and centuries of cultural practice have demonstrated their vitality for human growth and flourishing. Likewise, when people struggle with their spirituality and religion, such issues can cause enormous disruption psychologically and socially. Translating this knowledge into practical clinical skills is known as spiritual and religious competencies. However, despite their salience to mental health, mental health education and training has frequently neglected to equip students and clinicians with the necessary attitudes, knowledge, and skills to ethically and effectively address their clients' spirituality and religion. This "training gap" in spiritual and religious competencies can be partly attributed to lack of tangible, practical, and feasible methods for translate this knowledge base into mental health professionals' routine practice. Without such training, students and clinicians often believe spirituality and religion are not relevant to their professional work in ways that overlook core strengths or problems in their clients' lives-potentially throughout their careers. This book is written to bridge the gaps between psychological research on spirituality and religion and clinical training and practice across the fields of counselling, psychology, social work, and marriage and family therapy that align with contemporary ethical and accreditation standards. Each chapter is written for faculty instructors, supervisors, and other leaders who want guidance for addressing spirituality/religion in their education and training endeavors. Namely, in readers will find approachable and actionable strategies for promoting spiritual and religious competencies that are sensitive to common concerns of mental health educators and supervisors, guidance for infusing spirituality and religion competence into existing graduate courses and training frameworks, and, finally, research-based pedagogical strategies that freely provide materials such as case videos and vignettes, free and open-source training modules, and instructional guides to implement as either stand-alone offerings or integrated into training curricula and structures. Our goal is to start a new spiritual care discourse and widen the lens of spiritual care, providing a more capacious, humanist methodology that demonstrates how the sharing of our respective spiritual skills will enhance the work of each discipline in healthcare. In turn, these changes could lead to much needed cultural shifts and social transformation for a more holistic person-centered care and less moral distress for healthcare workers. This anthology addresses key gaps in the current spiritual care literature, highlighting the shared transdisciplinary skills clinicians possess to support patients' and families' emotional and spiritual needs, as well as our individual and collective vulnerability in hospital settings.

This book explores the conflict between holding on to and letting go of loss,
paying homage to Freud's classic 'Mourning and Melancholia' and building
on its foundation with contemporary ideas.
Losses are met throughout life and are either accepted and mourned
or resented and denied. Sometimes mourning is inappropriate or premature
because losses can be prevented, and unfinished business needs to be
completed. Eventually, however, accepting and mourning the loss confers
enormous benefits, many of which arise from the development of symbolic
thinking that enables ghosts to be turned into ancestors. These themes are
explored in clinical material and in extracts from literature. They enable some
of the ideas of Freud, Klein, and Bion to be expanded and updated. The book
ends with an edited transcript of interviews discussing the author's personal
history in relation to his work.
With insights from across the author's distinguished psychoanalytic career
and a deep understanding of literature, this is key reading for all psychoanalysts,
and anyone who wants to understand loss.

This edited collection offers global perspectives on contextually competent applied service delivery within the field of sport, exercise, and performance psychology (SEPP).

Professionals from around the globe join together to share their perspectives and experiences in SEPP, with each chapter offering insight across three different areas within a specific sport, exercise, or performance domain. This book begins with physical activity domains, sharing perspectives on working with athletes-including those with hidden and physical disabilities-in youth sport, with coaches, and with exercisers, including elderly exercisers. It then goes on to look at other performance domains, providing insights into working in esport, with military and tactical professionals, within business contexts, with performing artists, and in the healthcare sector. Brought together, the authors offer a diverse perspective on what it means to provide competent service delivery across a range of settings that a SEPP practitioner might work within.

Global in scope and offering a comprehensive overview of service delivery within SEPP, this is a valuable resource for graduate students seeking to understand the areas within which they could work, early career professionals starting out, and practitioners at any career stage looking to continue their professional development.

This work explores the development and applicability of core theories in cultural psychology, focusing on Brazil and Japan. It analyses systems of thought (holistic vs. analytic cognition), emotional frameworks (ideal affect, happiness), cultural logics (dignity, face, honour), relational mobility, monumentalism/flexibility, tightness/looseness, individualism/collectivism, and self-construal (independent/interdependent). Brazil and Japan display pronounced contrasts in certain domains, yet unexpected parallels in others. This work stresses the necessity of diversifying psychological research to encompass non-US or Western European perspectives, fostering a more globally representative understanding of human behaviour.

The Social Roots of Delusions argues that human sociality is essential for understanding what delusions are and how they form. Humans are cooperative and cultural animals, radically dependent on others for survival and for the knowledge we use to navigate our world. That world includes complex systems of norms, reputation, gossip, surveillance, and partner choice, along with high-stakes competition for prestige and power among individuals and shifting coalitions. Against this background, Williams, Wilkinson, and Miyazono offer a social account of delusions in two senses. First, they rethink what it means to be delusional by situating delusion attribution within norm-governed practices of epistemic gatekeeping. In this context, calling a belief delusional expresses bafflement and marks its adherents as "rational lost causes", people who seem unreachable by ordinary communication, persuasion, and argument. Second, they show how social forces help produce and sustain delusions, including both clinical delusions and collective delusions. Popular delusions arise from socially motivated cognition interacting with complex social practices that reward conformity, supply rationalisations, and shield groups from counterevidence. Clinical delusions, by contrast, are often maintained when isolation and mistrust cut people off from the shared knowledge and corrective testimony that ordinarily stabilise belief. Drawing on philosophy, cognitive science, and psychiatry, the book connects individual psychopathology with collective irrationality through a single social lens.

Globalism, Psychoanalysis, and the Integration of Eight Global Ideologies argues that psychoanalysis helps us comprehend the different ideologies shaping our world today by examining eight distinct belief systems through their psychological and rhetorical roots, moving beyond simple Left-Right political polarization.

The work uses Freud's theory of psychology and politics to answer pressing contemporary questions including why people believe in conspiracy theories, why politics has become so polarized, and what drives people to join political cults. Each of the eight global ideologies is connected to specific childhood desires, relationships, and psychopathologies, offering a counter-narrative to evolutionary psychology approaches. The goal is to develop a new form of globalism that recognizes and integrates foundational human desires and different ideological frameworks rather than simply appealing to facts and reason alone.

This book will be a fascinating resource for psychoanalysts, as well as faculty and graduate students interested in psychoanalysis, political theory, and cultural rhetoric.

Human Trafficking and Lived Experience draws from extensive interviews with survivors of human trafficking, offering best practices for meaning-making through storytelling.

Exploitation in human trafficking has been vastly studied and discussed across various disciplines, but this book focuses on the power of stories: how to use them wisely, without retraumatizing survivors, but instead fostering their empowerment and resilience.

This is a vital guide for students and practitioners in cultural psychology, counseling, social work, and gender studies, as well as leaders in non-profit organizations and anti-trafficking task forces.

The personalities of political leaders often play an important role in domestic and international outcomes. However, leaders cannot be studied directly by the usual means of interviews or psychological tests. In consequence, psychologists have developed a variety of indirect methods to assess and measure personality "at a distance." Many of these at-a-distance measures are based on content analysis of what leaders say or write. Political Leaders at a Distance begins by describing several cases when leaders' personality played critical roles in important political outcomes, such as the outbreak of war in 1914. The book then reviews the history of at-a-distance studies and offers a conceptual framework for personality, consisting of four different elements: social contexts, traits, cognitions, and motives. Subsequent chapters focus on the personality variables of each element: their theoretical bases, the validity credentials of existing at-a-distance measures, and additional measurement techniques that might be developed in the future. Each variable is discussed with case examples of particular leaders and historical figures, research results from previous at-a-distance studies of leaders, and links to instructions, procedures, and scoring systems for measuring that variable. The final chapter brings together theory and at-a-distance research from the four separate elements of personality, revisiting examples throughout the book to offer a complete assessment. The book concludes with a discussion of future directions for at-a-distance personality measurement and research such as exploring the personality characteristics of literary figures, and the work of artists and architects.

Psychology of Traffickers: Insights from Romanian Prisons offers a rare and methodologically rigorous examination of the moral and psychological worlds of individuals convicted of human trafficking. Based on in-depth qualitative interviews with 20 incarcerated traffickers in Romania, the book analyzes how exploitation is rationalized, normalized, and sustained over time within conditions of inequality, migration, and institutional constraint.

Rather than portraying traffickers as aberrant or pathological, Dr. Ludmila Bogdan situates their actions within everyday social and moral frameworks: intimate relationships, informal economies, gendered expectations, and bureaucratic systems that enable harm through routine practices and moral distancing. Through traffickers' own narratives, the book reveals how responsibility is displaced, coercion reframed, and exploitation rendered psychologically livable.

Integrating offender accounts with criminological and forensic psychological theory, the book develops empirically grounded typologies of trafficking involvement and moral coping. In doing so, it challenges simplified victim-perpetrator binaries and advances a structural, narrative-based understanding of trafficking as a social process rather than an exceptional crime.

Designed for forensic psychologists, criminologists, and scholars of violence and inequality, Psychology of Traffickers provides a critical framework for analyzing accountability, risk, and intervention by foregrounding the moral reasoning through which exploitation persists.
