Der vierte und letzte Band der Darstellung der ≫Preussenreisen≪ schildert die Art und Weise, wie sie zu Ende gingen und welche Folgen sie hatten. Als 1386/87 der heidnische Grossfuerst von Litauen zum katholischen Koenig von Polen wurde, beschloss der Deutsche Orden, seinen Kampf gegen dieses heidnische Land dennoch fortzusetzen, ein Jahrzehnt lang mit beachtlichem Erfolg. Erst dann wandte sich das europaeische Rittertum gegen einen anderen Feind, die osmanische Expansion. Eine neue Legitimitaet, die Preussen als Grundlage und Anstand des deutschen Adels betrachtete, erlaubte es dem Orden, den Angriffen seiner Feinde waehrend des Konzils von Konstanz zu widerstehen und veranlasste 1422 erneut deutsche Fuersten, nach Preussen zu kommen, zu spaet, um den Lauf der Dinge zu wenden. Diese neue Geschichte der verlorenen und wiedergewonnenen Legitimitaet stuetzt sich auf intensive Recherchen. Ein Gesamtfazit der vier Baende wird gegeben. Dokumente, Ergaenzungen und Indizes werden folgen. The fourth and last volume of the study of the “Prussian Voyages” tells how it ended and which were the consequences. When in 1386/87 the pagan grand-duke of Lithuania became the catholic king of Poland, the Teutonic Order decided to continue nevertheless his combat against this pagan country, during a decade with considerable success. Only then the European chivalry turned against it’s true ennemy, the Osmanic expansion. A new legitimacy, Prussia thought as foundation and propriety of the German nobility, permitted the order to resist the attacks of it’s ennemies during the Council of Constance and caused once again German princes to come to Prussia in 1422, too late to turn the course of events. The Order refused serious engagement on other pagan fronteers, but the European chivalry did, voyaging to other places: Bohemia, Hungary and the Mediterranean. This new history of lost and regained legitimacy is based on intensive research. An overall conclusion of the four volumes is given. Documents, Additions and Indices will follow.

Fuer die mittelalterliche Geschichte des Deutschen Ordens laesst sich eine relativ reichhaltige Ueberlieferung heranziehen. Zu den interessantesten Bestaenden zaehlen die Ordensfolianten in der XX. Hauptabteilung des Geheimen Staatsarchivs Preussischer Kulturbesitz in Berlin, die aber - anders als andere relevante Fonds - nur unzureichend und nicht in gedruckten Repertorien erschlossen sind. Der vorliegende Band erfasst nunmehr den Inhalt des einzigen erhaltenen Briefregisters mit der ausgehenden Korrespondenz des Hochmeisters Paul von Rusdorf aus den Jahren 1433-1438 und kann somit einen Beitrag dazu leisten, die komplexen Beziehungen des Ordens sowohl zu Polen-Litauen wie auch zu seinen anderen Nachbarn, zu Kaiser, Papst und Basler Konzil sowie zu den anderen europaeischen Maechten zu erhellen. The medieval history of the Teutonic Knights can be gathered from a relatively rich corpus of materials. One of the most important collections is in the Geheimes Staatsarchiv Preussischer Kulturbesitz Berlin, XX. Hauptabteilung, but there are only partly printed calendars and repertories. This holds especially true for the registers and books in the group of the “Ordensfolianten”. This book calendars the registers with letters from the Grand Master Paul von Rusdorf in the period from 1433 to 1438 which allows insights into the complex relationship of the Teutonic Order to Poland-Lithuania and its other neighbours as well as to the Emperor, Pope, and the Council of Basle and the European powers.

The Book of Roger is a twelfth-century Arabic geographical treatise commissioned by King Roger II of Sicily and compiled by the Muslim polymath al-Idrisi. On its completion in around 1157 it was the most detailed description of the known world produced up to that point. This translation covers Sicily, the seat of King Roger's government, along with the other parts of the Norman kingdom in the South: southern Italy, the Adriatic, and Ifriqiya, as well as the book's preface.

Presented in English translation for the first time this text offers insight into Roger's motivation in commissioning such an endeavour, and the relationship between king and scholar. A comprehensive introduction explores what this important work tells us about the Norman kingdom in the South in the Middle Ages, while a series of detailed maps will enhance the reader's appreciation of the richness of al-Idrisi's data.

Dass Liberalismus und juedische Gleichstellung im 19. Jahrhundert Hand in Hand gingen, kann fast schon als Allgemeinposten europaeisch-juedischer Geschichtsschreibung bezeichnet werden. Seine Intrigen fuehrten zum Sturz mehrerer Bundeskanzler, ins ?Exil“ als Diplomat in Rom und zum Abdriften ins nationalsozialistische Lager. Als fuehrender Beteiligter am Juliputsch zu lebenslanger Haft verurteilt, wurde er 1938 entlassen und starb als vergessener Mann. Seine Lebensgeschichte wirft ein Schlaglicht auf jene Kraefte, aus denen die Erste Republik entstand und an denen sie zugrunde ging.

Das Buch geht diesen Vorgaengen und ihren historischen Grundlagen wissenschaftlich auf den Grund und eroeffnet damit Einblicke in die aeltere Geschichte des Landes: Mochte es zum Beispiel Kopfschuetteln erregen, wenn die Ueberlieferungen die Gruendung der erst um 1343 gesichert erwaehnten Burg den alten Goten zuschreiben, so weicht das Verdutzen bald dem Verstaendnis, wie es dazu kommen konnte.

Der Kataster gehoert in seiner Gesamtheit zu den bedeutendsten, bis heute sichtbaren Leistungen der Habsburgermonarchie, die lange Zeit unterschaetzt wurden. Zugleich steht er fuer den gelungenen Versuch, die zur Monarchie zaehlenden Laender Mitteleuropas zu einem einheitlichen Rechtsraum im Hinblick auf Bodenbewertung und Steuerwesen zusammenzufassen. After the Battle of the Bulge-which had begun with a German attack that American intelligence failed to anticipate-the Office of Strategic Service (OSS), forerunner of the CIA, revamped its intelligence operations in Europe. Confronted with staff shortages and needing native language speakers, the OSS decided to enlist the cooperation of volunteers from occupied countries for intelligence-gathering operations. As part of Project Eagle, Polish soldiers were recruited and trained to go behind the lines of the Third Reich. Polish Eagles tells this fascinating World War II story of intelligence and espionage that until now has been hidden away in the archives of the OSS.

The OSS had worked with Polish exiles throughout the war, but Project Eagle would mark a new and dramatic chapter in their cooperation. In early 1945, American intelligence recruited thirty-two Poles-a unique group of men who had been forcibly conscripted into the German Wehrmacht, were captured in France and Italy, and were pulled from Allied prisoner of war camps. They were then trained in intelligence gathering as well as espionage to assist the Allies in their invasion of Germany. Not long after-in March 1945-they parachuted behind enemy lines, equipped only with falsified documents and radios. For six weeks, up until Germany's surrender, the Polish spy teams roved Germany, assisting ground commanders and providing counterintelligence assistance.

Located on the North Anatolian Fault, Constantinople was frequently shaken by earthquakes over the course of its history. This book discusses religious responses to these events between the fourth and the tenth century AD. The church in Constantinople commemorated several earthquakes that struck the city, prescribing an elaborate liturgical rite celebrated annually for each occasion. These rituals were means by which city-dwellers created meaning from disaster and renegotiated their relationships to God and the land around them in the face of its most destabilizing ecological characteristic: seismicity. Mark Roosien argues that ritual and theological responses to earthquakes shaped Byzantine conceptions of God and the environment and transformed Constantinople's self-understanding as the capital of the oikoumene and center of divine action in history. The book enhances our understanding of Byzantine Christian religion and culture, and provides a new, interdisciplinary framework for understanding Byzantine views of the natural world.
