This book provides a theoretically grounded, practically oriented framework for fostering creativity in second and additional language education. Creativity is among the most valued graduate qualities of our time - yet how to cultivate it deliberately in language education in the age of generative AI remains an open question. Drawing on sociocultural, psycholinguistic, cognitive, and linguistic theories, it offers research-informed pedagogical strategies and assessment methods that integrate AI ethically and productively - as a partner for idea generation, a scaffold for multilingual practice, and a prompt for critical reflection. Illustrated with authentic classroom cases, it addresses learner agency, teacher creativity, academic integrity, and inclusive assessment. An essential resource for language teachers, researchers, curriculum designers, and students navigating creativity and AI in language education.

This book explores how English accents are perceived, evaluated, and socially interpreted within contemporary Nigeria. Drawing on original empirical research involving Nigerian university students, the author investigates how speakers assign value to different English varieties, specifically American, British, Ghanaian, Jamaican, and Nigerian English, and what these evaluations reveal about identity, power, and postcolonial linguistic hierarchies. Using a mixed-methods approach that combines surveys, interviews, and an indirect verbal-guise experiment, the book uncovers both conscious beliefs and unconscious biases shaping how Nigerians respond to different English accents. At its core, the book examines the relationship between accent, social status, and cultural belonging in a multilingual, postcolonial society, offering new findings and implications for scholars, language educators, and policymakers alike.

The development of pragmatics has been shaped by thought experiments without which it could not have become an autonomous subfield of linguistics. However, their nature and their impact on current trends in pragmatics has not yet been made subject to systematic scrutiny. The book addresses that gap by confronting a central puzzle: How can thought experiments in pragmatics yield new experiential information about communication when they take place entirely within the researcher's imagination. The volume offers a clear and original answer by showing that their power lies not in invention or speculation, but in a disciplined process of argumentative re evaluation of existing experiential knowledge.
The book is unique in at least two respects. First, it presents carefully elaborated case studies on Searle's and Grice's seminal thought experiments, which yield an original solution to the paradox. The key idea of the solution is that thought experiments in pragmatics neither generate new experiential information per se, nor are they mere speculations on imaginary situations. Rather, their novelty is rooted in the plausible argumentation process during which they cyclically and prismatically re-evaluate experiential information. Second, through this solution, the book contributes to the controversies on the semantics-pragmatics interface in particular as well as the methodological foundations of pragmatic research in general.
Written with conceptual clarity and supported by extensive engagement with current scholarship, this volume is of vital interest to researchers and advanced students in pragmatics, cognitive linguistics as well as the history and philosophy of linguistics.

This book offers an interdisciplinary investigation into the role of metaphorical language in Chinese oral epics. Rooted in cognitive-pragmatic theory, it analyzes how metaphorical discourse operates, both as a cognitive tool and a pragmatic strategy, in shaping and transmitting the cultural narratives embedded in these epics. Integrating theoretical frameworks from cognitive linguistics and pragmatics with a bilingual corpus, the work explores metaphorical patterns and their functions in oral performance. By connecting micro-level linguistic features to macro-level cultural logic, it proposes a Three-Layer, Six-Mechanism Model, describing how metaphor links individual cognition, communal discourse, and cultural continuity. Furthermore, the study discusses cross-epic variations and seeks to contribute to international metaphor studies by sharing perspectives from Chinese oral traditions, while addressing broader debates on cultural heritage and narrative studies.

This book explores the portmanteau as a popular language trend. A portmanteau is a lexical blend in which at least one of the two original words is shortened in the process of combination, such as brunch (breakfast + lunch) or motel (motor + hotel). Although portmanteaus have a long history in the English language, they are experiencing a significant proliferation in online communication. The power of the portmanteau lies in its ability to bring concepts together both sonically and n writing. In doing so, portmanteaus carry the associations of their source words through multiple and shifting contexts, making them complex sites of rhetorical inquiry. This book examines the portmanteau form by analyzing a range of contemporary blend words. It theorizes a method of "critical portmanteau decomposition" that illustrates the ways the portmanteau's form contributes to its functioning by forging conceptual associations between its components. These associations become clear when the blend is "decomposed" into its constituent parts: the source words and the extra linguistic contexts surrounding both the source words and the blend as a whole. This complex blending process reflects and constructs conceptual networks that can be easily masked by the form, which is often viewed as playful and innocuous. This is particularly significant when the portmanteau transmits ideology, as the playful form is at odds with its content. Critical portmanteau decomposition takes into account the pieces of the portmanteau, the cognitive process of blending, the connections forged among elements, and the context of the complete word.

Mandarin is one of the most-spoken languages in the world. But when it was codified as the new national language in China between the 1910s and 1930s, its artificiality was such that only a handful of people could speak it with any fluency. The state-led creation and spread of China's national language is thus arguably the largest instance of social engineering in human history. What took centuries to accomplish in Europe was compressed into a mere three decades in China. How did this national linguistic unification happen? And, more broadly, what can this process teach us about the role of language in society? Based on research conducted in libraries and archives across the United States, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and mainland China, Jeffrey Weng examines the Chinese state's efforts to codify and elevate a new national language during the transition from Classical Chinese to modern standard Mandarin in the early twentieth century.
The ultimate form of the language was not inevitable. It was the concatenation of a multitude of disputes and decisions made in the early years of the republic, and, as Weng argues, represents a particular vision of Chinese society: unitary and egalitarian. Weng both reconstructs and reinterprets events in early twentieth-century China to give us a fresh view of how social change take place and how nations are made through cultural reinvention.

This book celebrates the remarkable contributions of Dr Keiko Koda, a leader in second language (L2) acquisition and reading development, who retired from Carnegie Mellon University in 2024. The chapters in this volume explore recent theoretical developments and practical applications in L2 reading research from a cross-linguistic perspective. The book addresses a wide range of issues in L2 reading among diverse learner populations, including young multilingual learners from both low- and middle-income countries and post-industrial nations. It also focuses on various types of learners in different educational settings worldwide, such as foreign language learners, heritage language learners, and dual language learners. Topics covered include meta-analyses, innovative applications of theory in pedagogy, and the design of assessment tools. Collectively, these contributions have the potential to significantly advance both theoretical frameworks and practical approaches in the field. This book is useful for researchers, educators, graduate students, and multilingual education specialists interested in theoretical and practical advancements in second language reading and cross-linguistic transfer.

This book offers a comparative study of how language movements shaped divergent paths of nation-building in postcolonial South Asia. Focusing on East Pakistan (now Bangladesh) and Tamil-speaking regions of Sri Lanka, it examines why two linguistic struggles-both rooted in cultural rights-produced radically different outcomes: a successful Liberation War in 1971 and a protracted Civil War from the 1980s onward. Drawing on Benedict Anderson, Edward Said, and Gayatri Spivak, it explores official nationalisms (Urdu, Sinhala) versus vernacular counter-nationalisms (Bengali, Tamil); reveals how writers of novels, poems, and plays shaped national consciousness; and highlights contrasting impacts of language movements on women's emancipation. The book traces the trajectory from cultural grievance to armed struggle, arguing that language rights are not symbolic but structural to political life in decolonized states. By comparing the secular Bengali movement with the sectarian Tamil struggle, it illuminates the possibilities-and limits-of emancipation in modern times.

This book offers an original guide to teaching English grammar to secondary multilingual learners through school genres and crosslinguistic classroom practice. It brings a descriptive approach to English grammar into secondary classrooms, showing how grammar choices shape meaning, clarity, cohesion, stance, and audience understanding. Part I introduces key resources in English grammar, including word classes, phrases, clauses, information packaging, and cohesion. Part II applies these resources to descriptive, narrative, expository, argumentative, persuasive, procedural, reflective, dialogue, monologue, and digital genres. The chapters use mentor passages, annotation routines, classroom tasks, feedback prompts, and teacher resources to support purposeful grammar teaching. Rather than treating grammar as error correction, the book frames learner language as evidence for inquiry and revision. It helps pre-service and in-service teachers connect descriptive grammar, crosslinguistic awareness, and inclusive language pedagogy to everyday classroom decisions.

A practical guide to demystifying speech technologies and integrating them into world languages courses
Speech technologies-such as speech recognition and speech synthesis-have become increasingly present in everyday life, yet many language teachers lack guidance on how to meaningfully integrate them into classroom practice. A Practical Guide to Speech Technologies for Second Language Learning addresses this gap by providing accessible explanations of key concepts, with no specialized background or training needed.
Grounded in CALL (computer-assisted language learning) and SLA theory, the book shows how speech technologies can support language learning and teaching in principled and pedagogically sound ways. The book focuses on speech synthesis and speech recognition technologies, providing practical tips and considerations for teaching speaking, listening, and pronunciation. Each section provides clear explanations of how the technologies function, insights from theory and research, and practical classroom examples, helping readers understand both their potential and limitations. The book also provides examples of activities for both English and French as second languages, and it illustrates how these technologies can be readily extended to a variety of languages.
This practical guide shows world language instructors how to integrate speech technologies into their courses. It will be useful for teachers, teacher trainers, and CALL researchers.
