This lexicon is a contribution to the study of Turkic language varieties and to historical research on Central Asian civilization. What is here called Eastern Turki is a corpus of non-standardized, mostly oral Uyghur language items elicited from people who lived in southern Xinjiang in the late 1800s and early 1900s. With its abundance of designations of tools and utensils, vehicles, professions, food, customs and beliefs, animals and plants, soils and terrains, etc., it will help us envision a bygone local Uyghur mode of life and its physical prerequisites.

Sanmartin, Joaquin, A Glossary of Old Syrian. Volume 2: l - z. (Languages of the Ancient Near East) 530 pp. 2024:7 (Pennsylvania State U. Pr., US) <725-1397>
ISBN 978-1-64602-280-9 hard ¥25,429.- (税込) US$ 117.95 *

A Glossary of Old Syrian: l-z is the second of two volumes that aim to map the lexicon of Old Syrian as it can be extracted and reconstructed from the (Old Akkadian) Eblaite through the Old and Middle Babylonian corpora.Referring to a continuum of dialects spoken in the Syrian-Levantine and Syrian-Mesopotamian regions through the third and second millennia BCE, "Old Syrian" is a diachronically conservative, geographically pluricentric, and pragmatically multilayered linguistic cluster. As such, the Glossary pays special attention to the distribution of lexical data along diachronic, diatopic, and diastratic criteria. Given the extent and widely dispersed nature of this data, entries are supported by the most representative corpora of the Old Syrian linguistic landscape. Each entry is headed by an etymon, a kind of prelinguistic consonantal skeleton, and further information about different lexemes, their roots, and their derivations is provided in subentries. As the lexicography of Old Syrian remains uncertain, the Glossary includes leading interpretative opinions alongside the most relevant Semitic material to corroborate the lexical choices it adopts. Bibliographical references are succinct and restricted, as a rule, to texts easily found in any Assyriological or Semitic library.Intended as a reference work in support of future study, A Glossary of Old Syrian offers a clear view of the state of the field.

ISBN 978-1-03-225457-9 hard ¥58,404.- (税込) GB£ 205.00 *

The Routledge Handbook of Translation and Migration explores the practices and attitudes surrounding migration and translation, aiming to redefine these two terms in light of their intersections and connections. The volume adopts an interdisciplinary and transnational perspective, highlighting the broad scope of migration and translation as not only linguistic and geographical phenomena, but also cultural, social, artistic, and psychological processes. The nexus between migration and translation, the central concern of this Handbook, challenges limited conceptualisations of identity and belonging, thereby also exposing the limitations of monolingual, monocultural models of nationhood. Through a diverse range of approaches and methodologies, individual chapters investigate specific historical circumstances and illustrate the need for an intersectional approach to questions of language access and language mediation. With its range of approaches and case studies, the volume highlights the inherently political nature of translation and its potential to shape social and cultural inclusion, emphasising the crucial role of language and translation in informing professional practices, institutional policies, educational approaches and community attitudes towards migration. By bringing together perspectives from both researchers and creative practitioners, this book makes an innovative contribution to ongoing global discussions on linguistic hospitality and diversity, ideal for those pursing postgraduate and doctoral studies in translation studies, linguistics, international studies and cultural studies.

There is no such thing as 'the dictionary'. Rather, there are innumerable kinds of dictionaries that respond to their authors' aspirations and their users' needs. In each case, the negotiation among a dictionary's material, its authors, and its readers tells a rich cultural story. Bringing together cutting-edge research from an international team of experts, this interdisciplinary Handbook provides an all-encompassing account of dictionaries in context. Organized into five thematic parts, its chapters cover a multitude of topics such as types of dictionaries, the place of dictionaries in intellectual, cultural and book history, and dictionaries as material objects, as well as their visual design. It also explores the role of dictionaries in a select group of special fields where words especially matter (for instance, law), the business contexts in which dictionaries are made, and finally the future of dictionaries. There is no fuller or more compelling overview of dictionaries available today.

Baldi, Sergio, Dictionary of Portuguese Loanwords in the Languages of Sub-Saharan Africa. (Brill's Studies in Language, Cognition and Culture 40) 275 pp. 2023:11 (Brill, NE) <708-8>
ISBN 978-90-04-54922-7 hard ¥27,071.- (税込) EUR 115.00

The main purpose of this dictionary is twofold. On the one hand, it provides the scholar of African studies with a tool to identify the possible Portuguese origin of terms present in African languages and, on the other, it offers those who are interested in Portuguese culture an overview of the presence of its lexicon in African languages. No doubt the Portuguese were among the first Europeans to explore the world outside of Europe, and as such they were also the first to introduce that world to European concepts and words. This book is the result of a long and detailed work on texts in African languages, as also shown by the rich bibliography in the dictionary.

Borbor, Dariush, Analytical Comparative Etymological Dictionary of Reduplication in the Major Languages of the Middle East and Iran. (Contemporary Studies in Descriptive Linguistics 55) 1070 pp. 2023:4 (P. Lang, SZ) <704-1>
ISBN 978-1-80079-966-0 hard ¥28,965.- (税込) SFR 116.00

≪Dariush Borbor has created an impressive lexicographical reference work with zeal and passion for over three decades, having collected the largest possible assemblage of alternatives for every single reduplicate. Linguists from many scientific fields must be grateful to him for his pioneering work.≫ (Adriano V. Rossi, Professor Emeritus of Iranian Philology, DAAM, University of Naples L’Orientale and ISMEO, Rome) ≪The author has created a truly remarkable work on a very strange and little studied area of linguistics. The book contains a wealth of fascinating information and I can only congratulate him on the care and assiduity which he has devoted to it.≫ (Nicholas Sims-Williams, Professor Emeritus of Iranian and Central Asian Studies, School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London) ≪I had an occasion to look again at your Dictionary of Reduplication. I realized once again how much useful work you have put into compiling it. Your bibliography is comprehensive and very useful. I should like to congratulate you on your assiduous effort to investigate so comprehensively a complex morphological aspect of the Middle Eastern Languages.≫ († Ehsan Yarshater, Professor Emeritus, Center for Iranian Studies, Columbia University) The present dictionary is an analytical, comparative and etymological presentation of reduplication over a wide spectrum of languages. The range of featured languages ? Arabic, Armenian, Kurdish, Persian and Turkish ? include three separate families connected only by geographical proximity, each with an extremely rich literary tradition. The dictionary covers multiple independent phenomena in several unrelated languages, the underlying idea being that their reduplications are all somehow connected, and that there exists a general ≪field≫ of reduplication. The book is not limited to a single field, but rather for several largely separate ones, such as linguistic relations, the theory of reduplication and etymology. Several other related or unrelated languages such as Icelandic, Japanese, Egyptian Hieroglyphics, Hittite, etc. have been included for comparative purposes. The preliminary findings of this study indicate that reduplication in the languages under study, and in nearly all other languages, deal mostly with the fundamental, primary human requirements. Another strong proof of the ≪universality≫ of reduplicates are that they closely follow the same and similar formation, development and rule in most related and unrelated languages. In consequence of the universality of reduplication and its near identical development in all related or unrelated languages, it even legitimizes the creation of a grammar of reduplication in the future. A few of the essential features of this book include: a complete revision and updating of the semantics; a particular attention to the cognitive aspects; and, many etymologies that cannot be found elsewhere.

Mpiranya, Fidele, English-Swahili Swahili-English Immersive Dictionary. 604 pp. 2023:8 (Routledge, UK) <699-8>

ISBN 978-1-03-227374-7 paper ¥10,822.- (税込) GB£ 37.99 *

Organized in an English-Swahili section and a Swahili-English section, English-Swahili Swahili-English Immersive Dictionary is a comprehensive presentation of Swahili usual lexicon. In both sections, entries are presented in clusters, based on the connections between the words of the target language (Swahili) in terms of meaning or origin. This meaning-driven presentation allows target language terms that are relatively similar in meaning, and therefore easily confused, as well as terms derived from the same base, to appear together in parallel contrastive lines. This creates an immersion effect that is particularly stimulating for language learning, since the user gets the opportunity to discover the words of the learned language group-by-group, rather than one-by-one, and is constantly reminded of subtle differences between different terms. It will help the learner master the vocabulary at a faster pace and with a better understanding of the rules that shape the lexicon of the target language. In addition, the introduction to the dictionary presents key grammatical points of Swahili that will help the reader make a productive use of information provided in the body of the dictionary. Additional grammatical information about the target language words such as the agreement pattern, the register of speech, or the level of use, is also provided in both sections to make it immediately accessible to the non-native user. The book is ideal for English-speaking learners of Swahili.

A Dictionary of High Frequency Function Words in Literary Chinese is the first comprehensive work on the subject that constitutes a new approach to teaching and learning by providing both a reference tool and a reader. This dictionary can serve both as a reference book and as an anthology for teaching and learning literary Chinese (the premodern written language) and both ancient and contemporary Chinese culture. It differs from the traditional design of dictionaries in that it includes detailed explanations, with examples, for different uses of the graphs most often used to represent function words in literary Chinese. To facilitate teaching and learning through association, the early meaning, extended meanings, and borrowed meanings for each graph are provided, along with explanations supported by the various stages of the historical development of the graph and other relevant research. Each word is grouped into the primary word class to which it belongs, based on its lexical or grammatical meanings, its collocations, and its function in a sentence. Modern idioms derived from words and phrases in the sample passages are provided in order to promote cultural knowledge and show the important role literary Chinese continues to play in everyday life. All Chinese words are provided with Putonghua romanization to facilitate learning and recall through sound; special pronunciations are explained. This book can be used as a textbook, as extended reading, or as a reference work for undergraduate or graduate classes on literary/classical Chinese, Chinese manuscript studies, Chinese language and culture, Putonghua, translation studies, or even linguistics. It can also be used as an anthology from which the teacher can select passages for students to study.

Three centuries of English idioms-their unusual origins and unexpected interpretationsTo pay through the nose. Raining cats and dogs. By hook or by crook. Curry favor. Drink like a fish. Eat crow. We hear such phrases every day, but this book is the first truly all-encompassing etymological guide to both their meanings and origins. Spanning more than three centuries, Take My Word for It is a fascinating, one-of-a-kind window into the surprisingly short history of idioms in English. Widely known for his studies of word origins, Anatoly Liberman explains more than one thousand idioms, both popular and obscure, occurring in both American and British standard English and including many regional expressions. The origins, and even the precise meaning, of most idioms are often obscure and lost in history. Based on a critical analysis of countless conjectures, with exact, in-depth references (rare in the literature on the subject), Take My Word for It provides not only a large corpus of idiomatic phrases but also a vast bibliography. Detailed indexes and a thesaurus make the content accessible at a glance, and Liberman's introduction and conclusion add historical dimensions. The result of decades of research by a leading authority, this book is both instructive and absorbing for scholars and general readers, who won't find another resource as comparable in scope or based on data even remotely as exhaustive.

The Akkadian (Babylonian-Assyrian) lexicon is currently accessible via two reference dictionaries, Wofram von Soden’s Akkadisches Handwoerterbuch (1958?1981) and The Assyrian Dictionary of the University of Chicago (1956?2010). However, due to a large number of new cuneiform texts published during the last decades, both dictionaries are outdated in part, especially in their earlier volumes. The Supplement to the Akkadian Dictionaries (SAD), funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, is meant to update both dictionaries. Without any claim to be comprehensive, SAD evaluates a strictly defined text corpus and a lim-ited amount of secondary literature. SAD pays particular attention to new words, new verbal stems, and references which expand the distribution of a word or help to define its meaning, form or etymology. SAD volume G, K, Q contains ca.?1000 lemmata, among them almost 200 new words.

Sumerian was the first language to be put into writing (ca. 3200-3100 BCE), and it is the language for which the cuneiform script was originally developed. Even after it was supplanted by Akkadian as the primary spoken language in ancient Mesopotamia, Sumerian continued to be used as a scholarly written language until the end of the first millennium BCE. This volume presents the first comprehensive English-language scholarly lexicon of Sumerian. This dictionary covers all the nuances of meaning for Sumerian terms found in historical inscriptions and literary, administrative, and lexical texts dating from about 2500 BCE to the first century BCE. The entries are organized by transcription and are accompanied by the transliteration and translation of passages in which the term occurs and, where relevant, a discussion of the word's treatment in other publications. Main entries bring together all the parts of speech and compound forms for the Sumerian term and present each part of speech individually. All possible Akkadian equivalents and variant syllabic renderings are listed for lexical attestations of a word, and a meaningful sample of occurrences is given for literary and economic passages. Entries of homonyms with different orthographies and unrelated words with the same orthography are grouped together, each being assigned a unique identifier, and the dictionary treats the phoneme /dr/ as a separate consonant.Written by one of the foremost scholars in the field, An Annotated Sumerian Dictionary is an essential reference for Sumerologists and Assyriologists and a practical help to students of ancient cultures.

Kogan, Leonid / Krebernik, Manfred (eds.), Etymological Dictionary of Akkadian. Volume 1: Roots beginning with P and B. 2 Bde. 1000 S. 2020:5 (de Gruyter, GW) <668-2>
ISBN 978-1-61451-305-6 hard ¥43,536.- (税込) EUR 184.95 *

In spite of the immense progress of Akkadian and Semitic linguistics in recent decades, no systematic diachronic treatment of the the Akkadian vocabulary has been carried out. The Akkadian vocabulary itself has been relatively well disclosed in two major dictionaries, but the Akkadian language has not been been sufficiently studied and analysed as a linguistic reservoir. The Etymological Dictionary of Akkadian presents a comparative and historical analysis of the entire Akkadian vocabulary in a systematic and comprehensive manner. Akkadian is the oldest transmitted Semitic language (from ca. 2600 BCE till the end of the first millennium BCE) and with an extant textual corpus of ca. 10 million words it is one of the best documented languages of the ancient world, comparable to the Latin record until the 3rd century CE. Akkadian was the main language of the Babylonian and Assyrian empires and the lingua franca of the ancient Near East used, for example, by the Hittites and Egyptians in international correspondence. The Akkadian language is therefore crucial in reconstructing early Semitic historical grammar, and, due to its central role in a vast geographical and culturally diverse are over a long period of time, Akkadian is unequivocally important as the origin, receptor, and transmitter of both Semitic and non-Semitic loan and foreign words whose traces can, for example, be found in modern languages.

This is a dictionary of Nafsan, the language spoken in Vanuatu in the south of Efate Island in the villages of Erakor, Pango, and Eratap. Nafsan is one of 130 distinct languages spoken in Vanuatu. Over several decades, linguist Nicholas Thieberger worked in close collaboration with the Erakor community to record this unique language and to refine its written presentation. The resulting publication offers insight into the diversity of meanings available to speakers of Nafsan, providing some 3,400 senses for Nafsan words and an English-Nafsan finderlist. In addition, the book gives an overview of the Nafsan sound system, provides a list of existing literature on the language dating back to early missionary translations, and includes maps of Efate locating nearly 200 place names. Readers will also find South Efate cultural knowledge embedded in the explanations of the Nafsan words and their usages. A welcome companion to Thieberger's A Grammar of South Efate (2006), this book complements and significantly augments other multimedia resources made available online by the author.
