This book revisits the concept of the transit catchment area (TCA) and examines evolving practices in TCA planning against the backdrop of expanding big and open data (BOD) in transit-oriented land use planning.

In many developed countries and regions, car dependence and urban sprawl have led to undesirable outcomes. Improved transit and land use planning can help create well-connected areas where people, businesses, and employers want to be. But how can we make these transit zones more appealing? BOD is transforming how we understand and address this challenge. Drawing on empirical data and case studies, this book shows how TCAs can be defined across two dimensions-feature (form) and performance (function)-and how BOD, combined with traditional sources, can be used to characterize these dimensions while revealing their complex interrelationships. The author employs a mixed-method approach that includes desktop research, survey data, and quantitative analysis with visualization. Readers will learn how to redefine TCAs and enhance planning practices by leveraging BOD sources such as smartcard data, OpenStreetMap, and social media-making transit areas more attractive while addressing car dependence, urban sprawl, and related challenges such as congestion, pollution, and declining social capital.

Big and Open Data for Transit Planning will be useful for planners, officials, students, and academics who are interested in the nexus of transit/transportation, land use, and sustainable development.

The green transition is no longer simply a question of better technologies or stronger carbon prices. It is a question of whether decarbonisation can remain feasible, investable, and socially durable under volatility, geopolitical rivalry, ecological limits, and distributional conflict. This book examines the transition as a systemic process shaped by bottlenecks, institutional capacity, and the interaction of policy, finance, and social legitimacy.

Bringing together political economy, governance, and green finance, the book analyses how policy instruments, metrics, resilience, and risk architectures condition the pace and durability of transformation. It explores the design of policy mixes, the role of indicators as governance devices, and the architecture of de-risking, market-making, coordination, disclosure, and supervisory frameworks. The discussion also addresses digital innovation, greenwashing risks, and the ways in which climate and regulatory uncertainty reshape capital allocation. Comparative evidence from the European Union, the United States, and China, together with analysis of European electricity markets, shows how transition strategies succeed or fail as constraints shift.

Written for academics, policymakers, regulators, practitioners, and graduate students in economics, finance, and sustainability, the book offers a framework for understanding how the transition can be governed under turbulence. It provides tools for identifying binding constraints, evaluating resilience, and understanding how credibility, sequencing, and uncertainty affect investment. Rather than offering a blueprint, it shows how transitions depend on managing sequences of constraints over time. Its central message is that a sustainable transition depends not on ambition alone, but on institutions capable of making long-term commitment credible under structural uncertainty.

This book comprehensively explores the intersection between gender, climate change, and the green economy in Africa. It investigates the gendered impacts of climate change and emphasises the critical role women play in addressing climate change, shaping sustainable development, and the green economy.

Drawing on a range of case studies, policy analyses, and theoretical reflections, the book highlights the often-overlooked contributions of women to sustainability efforts, environmental governance, and socio-economic resilience in the face of climate impacts. It argues that women are disproportionately affected by climate change due to existing socio-economic inequalities. It challenges women's exclusion from climate policy development and implementation by placing women at the centre of climate action and as critical actors for advancing climate justice and the green economy. To bridge the gap between gender-focused research and practical policy solutions, the book provides gender-sensitive strategies for a more inclusive, just, and sustainable future.

This book will be an important read for policymakers, researchers, and students across the fields of sustainable development, African studies, gender studies, and environmental studies. Additionally, it will be a valuable resource for development practitioners and NGOs working in the space of environmental justice and sustainable development.

This is the first book to illustrate the use of Network Analysis for the analysis of rating datasets. It uses a multi-disciplinary approach to focus on the quantification and visualization of rater effects for exploration, diagnosis, reporting, decision-making, and planning.

Combining cutting-edge theories of rater effects with step-by-step practical examples using publicly available data and open-source code (R packages), this book provides an introduction to the concept of rating datasets. It uses simple language to discuss data requirements, model assumptions, and other important details, and it follows all theoretical sections with practical applications that analyze empirical data step-by-step. The book also demonstrates how the proposed methods can be integrated with more established approaches, such as Rasch models, to make the analysis of relevant data more efficient. With its accessible language and gentle introduction to graph theory and network analysis, this book is suitable for readers unfamiliar with the methodology. throughout the book, readers will become able to plan a rater-effects study, format the dataset, conduct the analysis, and report the findings. The data and code are available as supplementary online material to encourage readers to replicate the analysis and reflect on the results.

This book will be of great interest to graduate students and researchers who conduct research on using ratings, and will also be an important reference for anyone studying measurement, research, and quantitative methods. Researchers and practitioners in the fields of testing services, awarding bodies and social sciences in general will also find this book useful

Since 2014, China has developed what is now the world's largest public-private partnerships (PPPs) market. This book provides a comprehensive and empirically grounded exploration of China's experience with PPPs.

Based on a detailed project-level dataset collected between 2014 and 2023, the author examines China's PPP governance from multiple perspectives. The analysis covers policy evolution, institutional experimentation, and regional diffusion patterns. It also investigates the fiscal incentives shaping local government behavior and the institutional constraints embedded in existing regulatory arrangements. The empirical chapters assess the extent to which spatial diffusion theory, transaction cost theory, capital structure theory, and cutback management theory explain the dynamics observed in practice, while also offering a timely assessment of recent PPP reforms in China.

This book will be of interest to scholars seeking to understand the evolution of PPP governance, as well as policymakers and practitioners looking for evidence-based insights.

Providing a comprehensive feminist political economy analysis of gender and global trade, this book challenges existing approaches to gender in global trade governance that prioritise market-based solutions to inequality.

The authors reveal how the power dynamics shaping trade governance unfold on gendered terrain. Tracing the emergence of gender mainstreaming in trade and its implementation in digital and food trade, they caution that dominant 'free trade feminist' approaches risk perpetuating gender-based and intersectional inequalities.

Weaving rigorous academic theory with cutting-edge policy analysis, they disrupt conventional wisdom about women's empowerment in trade and establish a feminist research agenda for transformative trade governance.

The material assembled in this volume offers a deeper insight into Walter Eucken's attitudes, thought, and actions during the darkest years of Germany's history: the period of National Socialism. Although Eucken, like his associates, destroyed potentially incriminating documents after the failed assassination attempt by Count Stauffenberg on Adolf Hitler on July 20, 1944, the surviving texts mark key stages in a process that ultimately led this determined opponent of the Nazi regime - an opponent from the very beginning - into active resistance against Hitler.
What rendered Eucken immune to National Socialism from the outset was his philosophically grounded abhorrence of the dissolution of the free individual into the collective, as is inherent in all totalitarian, especially voelkisch (ethno-nationalist) ideologies. His systematic opposition to the Nazi regime began with refusal, open protest, and confrontation, particularly in response to the rapid Gleichschaltung (forced coordination) of the universities, Martin Heidegger's rectorship, and the dismantling of academic freedom by the Nazis. Following Germany's invasion of Poland and several ultimately unsuccessful attempts to exert positive influence on the centers of power in Berlin, his resistance culminated in a - necessarily cautious - participation in conspiratorial activities as an advisor and confidant to the plotters.
The texts in this volume include notes and sketches of ideas, completed manuscripts that remained unpublished during his lifetime, published essays, a transcript of the lecture "Kampf der Wissenschaften," the record of a public discussion with a Nazi district leader, an expert report commissioned by the Reich Ministry of Economics on possible "sources of war financing" at the end of 1939, the academically significant essay "Wettbewerb als Grundprinzip der Wirtschaftsverfassung" prepared within the Academy for German Law, the chapter Eucken authored for the "Primer of Economics" initiated by Carl Goerdeler, as well as the appendix he co-authored to the memorandum "Wirtschafts- und Sozialordnung" of the Bonhoeffer Circle. This memorandum was prepared on behalf of the Confessing Church with a view to a future world church conference planned for the time after the war and the hoped-for overthrow of Hitler. Retrospective additions include, among other things, Eucken's "Notizen ueber die Haltung der rechts- und staatswissenschaftlichen Fakultaet in Freiburg waehrend der Herrschaft des Nationalsozialismus," his funeral oration for his prematurely deceased colleague Adolf Lampe, and drafts for an obituary of Hans Grossmann-Doerth, with whom, together with Franz Boehm, Eucken had launched the research program of the Freiburg School: the development of a legal order conceived as an economic constitution, whose fundamental principle would be competition.
These materials make it possible to trace how Eucken, precisely through his confrontation with the rapidly escalating regime of injustice - with the enforced Gleichschaltung, the increasing move toward a planned economy, the persecution of the Jews culminating in genocide, the other atrocities of the dictatorship, and the devastating Second World War - was able to sharpen his conception of a "humane and functional order," diametrically opposed to such a cataclysm. Eucken's theoretical design of a competitive order would later provide direction in the postwar years for the establishment of a social market economy in the young Federal Republic of Germany.

A critical history of the US dollar's dominance in the world economy-and what has kept China's currency from overtaking it.

The dollar is the primary currency of the world economy. With China now rivaling the United States on the world stage, a critical question hangs in the balance: will the Chinese renminbi challenge the status of the dollar and, in doing so, deprive America of its "exorbitant privilege"?

In GreenbackEmpire, Ho-fung Hung offers a powerful account of why, even as American shares of global production, ownership, and trade continue to decline, its currency has retained the support of governments and investors around the world. For six decades, Hung shows, the dominance of the dollar has rested on the security umbrella that the US offers to the world's wealthiest countries-including oil producers. To these countries, support for the value of the dollar is tantamount to maintaining US protection. While China has become a serious geopolitical and economic rival to the US, the Chinese state's airtight control of its financial system has delayed the free trading of the renminbi, limiting the currency's internationalization. In short, the same strategy that engineered growth in China's economy is restraining its currency's rise in opposition to the dollar. Hung's Greenback Empire is an essential history of the dollar's prowess, indispensable for understanding the future of the global monetary system.

Similar to banking systems worldwide and driven by geopolitical pressures, the banking systems in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region face many significant challenges, especially in the wake of the 2007-09 credit crunch, the decline in oil prices in 2014, and the post-2011 unsettled political landscape in the wider Middle East North Africa (MENA) region. These challenges include deregulation concerning the establishment, operation, and supervision of credit institutions; the accelerating improvements in computer and telecommunication technologies and Fintech structure; and growing competition from global and domestic banks. Moreover, the future expansion within the GCC banking sector due to the national governments' demonstrated commitment to implementing economic diversification strategies which favour the development of non-government sectors will present further opportunities to the domestic financial institutions as well as place greater pressure on them to boost efficiency and stability, as well as improve their competitive stance

Against this background, the banking systems in the GCC region have witnessed a fundamental transformation over the last two decades, which the book discusses using a panel data analysis framework. In addition to the formidable record of growth of Islamic banking, the banking sectors have been involved in several dramatic changes driven by technological disruption (and fintech), economic growth, and various other geopolitical factors. Even though the countries of the GCC are among the largest economy and most open economies in the MENA region, and although the region has experienced economic policy stability through the continuous use of the pegged-to-the-USD exchange rate regime, the structure of the banking systems tend to show some imbalances. The book will address the questions raised regarding the role of banks in the economy, how managers generate value for the owners, and how recent developments have affected the structural trends in the sector, and will be of particular interest to academics, researchers, and students of banking and Islamic finance.

A provocative look at America's compulsion to consume and our obsession's surprising-and strange-origins.

In a capitalist society, people sell their labor to purchase staples like food, shelter, and anxiety medication. That's the equation of everyday economic life that we've always been told is true. Except, is it really that simple anymore? No matter how unmaterialistic you may think you are, odds are that deep within is a drive to consume because it feels good: books you won't read, clothes you won't like and might wear even less, a replacement phone whose novelty runs out as quickly as its upgrade hits the market. But what drives this impulse?

In Growth Machines, Mark Joseph Stelzner shows how today's consumers are now programmed by a US economy intent on infinite growth to work for goods they've been convinced they need and conditioned to want. Stelzner establishes the gaps between economic thinking and economic reality, arguing that consumption is no longer just a reflection of needs, but rather, it reflects a need for transaction-in many cases, a treat we seek out because it feels good. We work not only to be able to consume the essentials for living, but also to consume for consumption's sake. Yet such consumption doesn't make us happier. Stelzner traces this strange nature of consumption to an environmental source: an economy that demands growth. To keep its economy pumping, the US must keep Americans consuming. This makes Stelzner's book an uncomfortable reflection on how we internalize our economy. To be an American is to consume; to consume is what makes America.

Now in its third edition, this authoritative practitioner-led guide to investor relations (IR) builds on the foundations laid in its 2008 debut and 2013 update, reflecting how the discipline of IR has evolved. While tools, technologies, and investor expectations have developed, the book remains anchored in its core conviction: Investor relations is a strategic management function that influences valuation, access to capital, and the cost of capital.

Combining financial analysis, strategic communication, and capital markets insight, the book provides structured frameworks and practical methodologies drawn from decades of international experience. It offers clear guidance for senior executives, investor relations professionals, financial analysts, and students seeking a rigorous understanding of how companies compete for capital in increasingly complex and scrutinised markets.

Unlike much of the existing literature, which often focuses on compliance or US-specific regulatory practice, this edition adopts a distinctly global perspective. It addresses the realities faced by both public and private companies seeking to attract long-term investors and diversify their shareholder base across borders, including from an emerging markets standpoint.

Whether refining an established IR function or building one from the ground up, readers will find actionable frameworks, real-world examples, and measurement approaches that position investor relations as an integrated driver of valuation discipline, long-term shareholder value creation, and sustained stakeholder trust.

This monograph establishes a pioneering analytical framework to examine China's low-carbon transition through the synergistic interaction of financial innovation and technological empowerment. By integrating green finance, digital infrastructure and green credit policies with the rapid advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AI), the monograph offers a comprehensive understanding of the mechanisms driving sustainable development.

At the macro-urban level, this book demonstrates how financial innovation catalyzes AI adoption, yielding measurable improvements in energy efficiency and significant reductions in carbon intensity. At the micro-enterprise level, this book reveals how technological empowerment directly reduces energy intensity through digital technologies, with financial innovation further amplifying this impact via targeted credit mechanisms that incentivize exploratory innovation and ESG integration. By resolving the "dual-impact paradox" of technological solutions and quantifying multi-scalar policy efficacy, this book provides emerging economies with an empirically validated blueprint for synchronizing financial systems, digital disruption, and hierarchical governance in the global climate transition.

How the best intentions of African socialism became the useful tools of capitalism.

In the mid-twentieth century, skilled labor was seen as the key to national development. For newly independent African countries, this posed a formidable challenge: to build thriving economies, they needed to rapidly educate workers. As it turns out, that wasn't their only obstacle.

Ambition and Adjustment reveals how responses to this human capital problem from the political left and right converged in unlikely ways to block Africa's postcolonial progress. Focusing on nation-building projects in Zambia and Tanzania, Priya Lal recounts how the first generations of Africa's professional class faced pressures on all sides-from foreign planners prioritizing economic growth and from local socialists decrying higher education and professionalization as wasteful and elitist. When African development stalled, international institutions like the World Bank took up parts of both approaches, justifying structural adjustment programs that defunded African universities and hospitals in the name of social equity. Indeed, Lal shows that neoliberal austerity in the 1990s was packaged in Africa's socialist narratives from the 1960s.

By unearthing this forgotten history, Ambition and Adjustment upends traditional accounts of postcolonial development, exposing how socialism and capitalism both conflicted and overlapped to shape Africa's trajectory since independence.

The current conflict between Russia and Ukraine has changed several views on the practical conduct of military conflict, combat doctrines, the use of military means, logistics, and communication. Not only regarding war on the ground, but also cyberwar, hacks, and attacks on networks are coming to the forefront of military activity.

The chapters in this volume stand at the intersection of the social, geopolitical, economic, and military fields. For too long, these subjects have been treated differently, even though they overlap for various reasons. Public expenditures are the foundation for all strategic planning decisions and political objectives. Economic foreign investment, on the other hand, must be viewed in the larger context of how these decisions impact the strategic regional environment.

Books in this series compile quantitative and qualitative studies in finance, insurance, and risk management. Subjects of interest may include banking, accounting, auditing, compliance, sustainability, behaviour management, and business economics.
