Differing conceptions of the best interests of the child and the family, redefinitions of "family", changing criteria for a family's or child's suitability for adoption, abduction, international adoption, and even European integration all came into play, empowering authorities to define, regulate and sometimes even forbid adoptive relationships to that end. Instead of getting lost in jargon and big promises, the book stays close to real lives: people receiving old age allowances, widows and destitute women relying on small but vital stipends, and the local officials trying to make a new system work. It traces how mobile money and government-to-person (G2P) payments can reduce leakage, sideline middlemen, and speed up transfers, while still leaving many behind because of gender norms, where they live, what they can read, and who holds power. Drawing on detailed fieldwork and clear-eyed policy thinking, the authors show what actually works on the ground, what falls apart in practice, and what needs to change so that digital cash transfers respect people's dignity and strengthen their voice, rather than simply making the system more efficient.

This book explores the ways in which individuals experience a traumatic and life changing event: a stroke. It is based on interviews and diaries written by stroke survivors over the 18 months after their stroke. The book examines the differences in experiences and the ways in which these differences are shaped by factors such as preexisting illness, impact of stroke on the body, speed of recovery, interaction with health professionals and personal resilience and agency. In the UK alone, about 100,000 people have a stroke each year and there are around 1.3 million stroke survivors. There is a substantial workforce of health and social care workers providing acute care and longer term support for stroke survivors and their families. In policy-making, service provision and academic study, stroke survivors are often treated as a homogenous group who have undergone similar experiences with similar outcomes and therefore have similar needs. This book uses insights from social science theory to explore the diversity of experiences and the broad spectrum of outcomes, ranging from a biographical blip to life-changing suffering.

First, the rapid increase in average life expectancy has led to an increase in the number of bedridden elderly and those suffering from dementia, and the need for and importance of long-term care has grown. Second, it was necessary to eliminate "social hospitalization". Social hospitalization refers to a condition in which a patient is not in need of medical care but remains hospitalized in a medical institution for compelling reasons such as family circumstances. Third, medical costs for the elderly were increasing rapidly. It was necessary to control the increase in medical costs by separating medical care from long-term care.
