Climate change is the greatest market failure in world history and thus the most urgent challenge in the world of business for the foreseeable future. This book brings together experts to shed light on the historical impact of business on climate change and of climate change on business.

The book shows how corporate responses to climate change emerged out of earlier environmental concerns, regulatory frameworks, and in many cases already established business strategies. Contributors to the book analyse the evolution of business strategies to navigate environmental challenges even before climate crisis was widely recognised as an urgent concern.

Manorial Capitalism, Enslavement, and the Logic of Dividuation proffers three perspectives on the plantation slave economy of the Antebellum South. The first explores the paternal function as exemplified in the structural authority of the lord of the manor both symbolically and operationally. This figure of masculine authority persisted from the Medieval period to orchestrate what is called here Manorial Capitalism. The second examines the exploitation and alienation that epitomize the logic of capitalism from the plantation economy to the present. And the third deploys retroactively the logic of dividuation to the plantation, a logic that draws its inspiration from neoliberal financial capitalism as well as from anthropological accounts (which distinguish the dividual from the Cartesian-Kantian individual). This book argues that reducing individuals to dividuated components continues to enable a dehumanizing capitalist mindset to fixate on abstracted labor power rather than seeing laboring individuals.

Exploring the movement of peoples, perfumes, and spices across vast distances in this period of medieval history across Asia, the Middle East, and Europe, this book examines the role of Arab merchants in trade between and among the Caliphal and Carolingian elites.

The study of the trade in perfumes and spices highlights the relationship between the South Asian subcontinent and the Caliphate. It is shown that the societies involved in this intercontinental maritime trade intermingled through the demand for goods and products which allowed for the transmission of ideas and learning. Crucially, the Eurasian end of these trading routes were tapping into pre- existing networks of trade as there is evidence that there were links of trade between East Asia and the near and Middle East as early as the seventh century B.H./ first century A.D. Thus, the book challenges the Eurocentric worldview which fails to take into account that the Europeans in the late medieval period came into a pre- existing trading network.

Historical research into female entrepreneurs has become a burgeoning field in recent years. However, there is still a lack of studies of businesswomen based on their personal documents, and such documents seem to be rare. This book examines the history of the transformation of the small town of Kozani, situated in modern Greek Macedonia, into a vibrant commercial hub and self-administering community during the period of Ottoman rule, c. 1400-1821.

Beginning with a comprehensive examination of the foundation myths as recorded in local amateur historical works, the book then proceeds with a reconstruction of the foundation of Kozani as a small village during the chaotic Ottoman conquest of Macedonia in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. It then examines the history of the village using extant Ottoman and Greek documentation, as well as available Ottoman and European travelogues and geographical treatises. Key moments are highlighted in the socio-economic transformation of the village into a thriving commercial hub and religio-political and administrative centre during the sixteenth, seventeenth, and eighteenth centuries. To that end, it discusses the taxation status of Kozani and more particularly the establishment and administration of the malikane life-term tax-farming system. The book also examines local myths about communal strife, applying the scheme of bilateral factionalism to explain the repeated waves of intra-communal violence that almost tore the settlement apart.

While white workers and managers resisted integration, activists' efforts gradually secured a wider range of job opportunities for Black people. The saga of Yankton County's attempt to bring the first railroad into Dakota Territory in 1873 covers 25 years of territorial history, leading up to statehood for South Dakota in 1889. Garry investigates the array of unusual facts and occurrences within the story of the Dakota Southern, which was the first railroad stretching into the Territory. Lawsuits worked themselves all the way up to the Supreme Court. The most notorious shooting in the territory occurred in connection with railroad disputes The failure of Yankton to pay interest on the bonds used to finance the railroad-a failure initially prompted by a court injunction against such payment-may have delayed statehood for the entire territory.

But the primary focus of this railroad story revolves around the way it highlights the predictions and observations of two of America's most noted thinkers: Alexis de Tocqueville and James Madison. It shows the tension between Tocqueville's impressions of the enterprising, risk-taking, and association-minded nature of Americans and Madison's warnings about a federal government exercising unprecedented powers and having expanded beyond adequate checks. It works through the abstract observations of Tocqueville and Madison with tangible examples that are still relevant today.

The surprising history of education technology and its political, financial, and social impact on higher education and our world

From AI tutors who ensure individualized instruction but cannot do math to free online courses from elite universities that were supposed to democratize higher education, claims that technological innovations will transform education often fall short. Yet, as Anne Trumbore shows in The Teacher in the Machine, the promises of today's cutting-edge technologies aren't new. Long before the excitement about the disruptive potential of generative AI-powered tutors and massive open online courses, scholars at Stanford, MIT, and the University of Illinois in the 1960s and 1970s were encouraged by the US government to experiment with computers and artificial intelligence in education. Trumbore argues that the contrast between these two eras of educational technology reveals the changing role of higher education in the United States as it shifted from a public good to a private investment.

How apprenticeship shaped the English economy

Apprenticeship dominated training and skill formation in early modern Europe. Years spent learning from a skilled master were a nearly universal experience for young workers in crafts and trade. In England, when apprenticeship reached its peak, as many as a third of all teenage males would serve and learn as apprentices. In The Market for Skill, Patrick Wallis shows how apprenticeship helped reshape the English economy.

Some historians see apprenticeship as a key ingredient in the industrial revolution; others agree with Adam Smith in seeing it as wasteful and conservative. Wallis shows that neither of these perspectives is entirely accurate. He offers a new account of apprenticeship and the market for skill in England, analyzing the records of hundreds of thousands of individual apprentices to tell the story of how apprenticeship worked and how it contributed to the transformation of England. Wallis details the activities of apprentices and masters, the strategies of ambitious parents, the interventions of guilds and the decisions of town officials. He shows how the system of early modern apprenticeship contributed to the growth of cities, the movement of workers from farms to manufacturing and the spread of new technologies and productive knowledge.

In this groundbreaking study, Wallis argues that apprenticeship succeeded precisely because it was a flexible institution which allowed apprentices to change their minds and exit contracts early. Apprenticeship provided a vital channel for training that families could trust and that was accessible to most young people, whatever their background.

The strange and contested evolution of the management of banking risk

Banks in America are private institutions with private shareholders, boards of directors, profit motives, customers, and competitors. And yet the public plays a key role in deciding what risks are taken as well as how, when, and to what end. Public-private negotiations over financial governance has evolved into an essential ecosystem of banking risk management. In Private Finance, Public Power, Peter Conti-Brown and Sean Vanatta offer a new history of finance and public policy in the United States by examining the idiosyncratic way the nation manages financial risk across the public-private divide. Covering two centuries, from the founding of the Republic to the early 1980s, Conti-Brown and Vanatta describe the often-contested, sometimes chaotic, engagement of bankers, politicians, bureaucrats, and others in the overlapping spaces of the public-private system of bank supervision.

Conti-Brown and Vanatta trace the different supervisory frameworks that evolved over time, from the imposition of private liability on bank shareholders to the development of the central bank to the creation of federal deposit insurance. Negotiations took place at federal and state levels, but, over time, the federal government assumed most of the responsibility for managing financial risk. Moreover, federal supervisory officials began to undertake more varied tasks, including monitoring racial discrimination and managing financial concentration. Conti-Brown and Vanatta introduce a diverse cast of characters-bankers, politicians, bureaucrats, and others-and show how they navigated two hundred years of financial panics, scandals, and crises to build the system that structures modern America's banking system.

In the first half of the twentieth century, a major change occurred in Egyptian nationalist understandings of imperialism and economic sovereignty. Where once the volatilities of foreign markets and capital were seen as the main threat, over time large landowners and their imperial allies were targeted as the principal obstacles to the country's industrial progress. The perceived locus of imperial domination shifted from the realm of circulation to the realm of production. Harvests of Liberation situates this transformation in the midcentury dynamics of agrarian capitalism in Egypt.

Ahmad Shokr tells a story of decolonization through the lens of cotton, Egypt's prized export. He follows a range of actors-colonial advisors, nationalist leaders, agrarian reformers, merchant-financiers, landowners, and rural workers-whose interactions moved the levers of the cotton trade from institutions that facilitated accumulation on an imperial scale to new sites of control within the nation-state. Amidst depression and war, the transformation of Egypt's cotton economy prompted nationalists to embrace policies of land reform and industrialization and adopt a new conception of history. Ultimately, Shokr argues, these efforts set the stage for the construction of a postcolonial republic under Gamal Abdel Nasser, where national liberation became equated with national development.

In The Roots of Flower City, Camden Burd explores the economic and ecological significance of Rochester plant nurserymen over the course of the nineteenth century. As the first boomtown in the United States, Rochester was an embodiment of nineteenth-century market economies and social reform movements. Connected to the eastern seaboard by the Erie Canal, the city's unique economic, cultural, and environmental conditions fostered and sustained a vast and influential commercial plant nursery industry that attracted the nation's most prominent horticulturists and nurserymen.

Rochester-area nurserymen built parks and rural cemeteries, landscaped homes and schools, and promoted horticultural pursuits regionally and nationally. As their influence grew, many of these horticultural entrepreneurs developed into the city's elite and played a leading role in shaping Rochester's economic, social, and physical landscape. Most significantly, nurserymen enthusiastically participated in the American imperial project, selling and distributing fruit, shade, and ornamental trees, shrubs, and flowers across the continent, transforming landscapes and ecologies far beyond New York.

The Roots of Flower City tells the remarkable history of Rochester's outsized influence on the homes, estates, towns, and cities of nineteenth-century America as it weathered economic downturns and competition from other regions. One threat, however, proved to be too much to overcome. As Burd details, the spread of the destructive San Jose scale through the transcontinental plant trade prompted federal legislation that would lead to the decline of the Rochester plant nursery industry in the last decade of the nineteenth century, ending a sustained era of success and ecological impact.

After a turbulent modern history of conquest and colonialism, Mexico has developed as an economy that may be emerging but still displays significant levels of poverty, particularly in relation to its neighbor to the north, the United States.

Drawing on archival data, decades of new Mexican historiography, and considering issues of political economy, this book explores how Mexico ended up in the relative economic position that it did. Beginning with Hernan Cortes and the invention of the Conquest of New Spain, it explores the economic history of Mexico through the lens of political economy, incorporating environment and demography, politics and power, and industrialization and inequality. The aftermath of the Conquest brought about a complete restructuring of the economy as a result of death from disease, the introduction of European-style agriculture, and a more intensive exploitation of the peasantry. The eighteenth and nineteenth centuries saw "reform" followed by a series of crises and rebellions under which sustained economic growth was impossible. Globalization and the expansion of agricultural exports provided some opportunities in the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries, but they failed to provide the booming rural population with a sustainable means of supporting domestic demand. The so-called Mexican Miracle-the period of rapid growth in the 1950s, 1960s, and early 1970s-disguised a failure to address the economic inequality embedded since the colonial period. As this book clearly demonstrates, this inequality was sometimes challenged in Mexican history but never decisively addressed, let alone reversed.

Seeds of Exchange examines the US and Soviet exchange of agricultural knowledge and technology during the interwar period. Maria Fedorova challenges the perception of the Soviet Union as a passive recipient of American technology and expertise. She reveals the circular nature of this exchange through official government bureaus, amid anxious farmers in crowded auditoriums, in cramped cars across North Dakota and Montana, and by train over the once fertile steppes of the Volga.

Amid the post-World War I food insecurity, Soviet and American agricultural experts relied on transnational networks, bridging ideological differences. As Soviets traveled across the US agricultural regions and Americans plowed steppes in the southern Urals and the lower Volga, both groups believed that innovative solutions could be found beyond their own national borders. Soviets were avidly interested in American technology and American agricultural experts perceived the Soviet Union to be an ideal setting for experimenting with and refining modern farm systems and organizational practices. As Seeds of Exchange shows, agricultural modernization was not the exclusive domain of Western countries.

This book provides an overview of American aviation from 1903 to 1941, covering major developments in aviation technology. It focuses on the role of the military and selected firms. Under the fiscal constraints imposed by the post-war military drawdown and the Great Depression, the US military sacrificed quantity aircraft procurement for gains in quality. Until foreign powers began huge rearmament programs, US military aircraft were some of the most advanced in the world. They held numerous international performance records before the US fell behind other powers that had gone on a war footing. It offers new insights into the contributions of immigrants and foreign technologies to American aviation, while examining the relationship between the government and the aviation industry. It also highlights factors that enabled America to field some of the war's most advanced warplanes, which ultimately helped win the Second World War.

In recent decades the study of the ancient economy and ancient warfare have both been transformed by ground-breaking new studies and methodological approaches. Offering a selection of cutting-edge research on the interlocked themes of economics and war, this edited volume explores how armed conflict affected markets and economic opportunities in ancient Greece.
