Changes to the meaning and nature of work, capitalism, and democracy during and after the New Deal have been contested from the mid-twentieth century to the present day. Rather than rehashing the familiar, tidy story of a Democratic coalition coming together in the 1930s only to be felled by conservative movements in the 1970s, this volume instead emphasizes that the prosperity many white American families enjoyed did not stop the fights over whose work would be recognized, how corporations would be regulated, and whose democratic rights would be protected, both on and off the job. Cultural representations of the ideal worker, legal battles over workplace rights, political standoffs over inflation policies, dire warnings against too much regulation, and abuses of the tax code indicate there never really was a consensus on how democratic the country, its economic system, and its workplaces would be.

As the collected essays suggest, backlash does not seem the right word to describe the challenges left-leaning politicians, environmental activists, and immigrants faced in the late twentieth century, when managing supply chains became far more lucrative than manufacturing the goods being shipped around the world. Using the broad categories of work, capitalism, and democracy to reinterrogate the past, contributors contend, is the only way to understand today's conflicts over the future of how Americans will work, how capitalism will function, and how the country will be governed.

In the nineteenth century, France embarked on the colonization of whole swathes of Africa and Asia. What drove this policy, and what methods did it use to establish and enforce French domination? What disruptive effects did this have on the colonized societies, and what did it mean for their economic and social development? Today, can we say they have been completely decolonized? Empire on the Cheap offers new answers to these ever-controversial questions.

Drawing on extensive archival work and statistical analysis, Denis Cogneau offers a richly detailed description of the colonial states and how they functioned, with a particular focus on issues of taxation, military recruitment, capital flows and inequalities. He shows that the Empire cost France little until the wars of independence following World War II, and that capital from France did not trickle down to the colonies. The French Republic proclaimed its 'civilizing mission', but its rule did not lead to the development of the occupied countries, and instead established violent colonial regimes with ambiguous and sometimes conflicting goals. Such regimes mainly benefited a small minority of French colonists and capitalists. Yet, even after winning independence, nationalist elites in the former colonies most often maintained an authoritarian and deeply unequal state order.

Examining both the evolution of the colonized societies and what has become of them after independence, Cogneau makes a major contribution to our understanding of imperialism, past and present.

This book presents the analysis of leading economic historians on the long-term economic development problems which made Spain a backward economy before industrialization later took hold. This book begins by revisiting the thesis of the failure of the First Industrial Revolution with updated data and methods and analysing the modernization of key manufacturing activities, with contributions from specialists in the history of these industries. By contrast, the next sections of this book explore the Second Industrial Revolution in Spain which appears to have been a remarkable success during the 1914-1973 period. The contributors in this section look to explain the reasons why the experience of industrialization was so different this time around. Over the past thirty years, the history of technology has been so extensively renewed that many once-canonical narratives have been invalidated.

This collective work takes account of several of these major recompositions: ancient periods were never eras of technical stagnation; techniques are not "diffused", but interpenetrate and reinvent themselves as they travel; invention is not an individual epiphany, but a gradual and often collective process; far from neutral, the material is endowed with its own agentivity; the notions of capitalism, gender and the environment are fertile contributions to the history of techniques, and have served to invalidate many naiveties.

These recent works have put an end to the discontinuous vision of a history made up of straightforward technical ruptures, in favor of more complex descriptions that provide a better grasp of the real dynamics of today's world.

Management in Interwar Britain engages in a debate about the quality of management and the extent of organisational innovation across British business in the interwar period. It has been prompted by the recent publication of several articles that offer a revisionist view of this debate, contradicting what has been the dominant narrative for many decades. The revisionist claims are based solely on an assessment of the impact of Rowntree's Lecture Series and the Management Research Groups, leading those scholars to conclude that a vibrant community of interest emerged after World War One. The chapters in this book are aimed at evaluating this thesis, as well as its methodological base. Covering sectors as diverse as manufacturing, banking and retail, each author has conducted extensive primary research in order to evaluate the case-study's position in this debate. The key theme emerging from this work is that while there is evidence of innovation as firms and industries struggle with the macro-economic challenges of that era, the persistence of a 'proprietorial' form of capitalism proved to be a major constraint on progress. Another important conclusion relates to the forms of external advice that British firms tapped, given the increasingly important role of accountants, bankers, consultants and management experts. Above all, the essays reveal a highly nuanced scenario, with both continuity and change occurring in different guises; it is a situation that demands much more empirical research before a definitive conclusion can be reached.

In the early twentieth century, the Ford Motor Company built an industrial empire with massive factory complexes and associated infrastructures. Henry Ford's 1915 plan to decentralize industrial manufacturing relied on moving key technical processes closer to sites of resource extraction while distributing elements of production. In Fordism and the City, Jay Cephas analyzes key infrastructures-from factories and mills to roads, rail lines, and canals-to trace the impact of automated, assembly-line production on the urban and rural landscapes of Michigan. The overwhelming scale of the Ford Motor Company's plant in Dearborn, the idyllic setting of its small village factories throughout the Rouge River corridor, and the remoteness of the company's iron ore mines and hardwood forests in the Upper Peninsula all played an important role. Under the rubric of "the industrial city," Fordism sought to replace conventional urbanism, reconfiguring factory production and then making its practices visible and intelligible to a consuming public through an industrial aesthetic. In doing so, Cephas shows, Fordism functioned as a normalizing force that helped to usher in the new industrial society.

An examination of how the unsustainable consumption of meat in seventeenth-century Rome both symbolized the extent of papal power and sparked the outbreak of civil war

In 1644 four norcini or pork butchers were accused of killing not pigs, but seven of their fellow citizens, stripping the meat from the bones, then combining it with pig to make sausages, which were then sold to Romans from their shop behind the Pantheon. In the multiple pamphlets describing this supposed crime, the authors of this accusation blamed residents of Rome themselves, who had become so obsessed with meat that they turned a blind eye to such horrendous acts. This fabricated story points to an underlying reality-that in the early seventeenth century, a series of popes dramatically increased the amount of food and wine consumed by Romans, culminating in a per capita consumption of over a pound of meat per day during the reign of Pope Urban VIII (d. 1644).

The Barberini Butchers traces the efforts and activities of a range of actors who strove to bring meat to the Roman table. Bradford A. Bouley shows how Rome's preoccupation with food was the result of papal policy in the aftermath of the Reformation; food, and especially meat, served as religious and political propaganda, symbolizing the correctness of the Catholic faith and demonstrating the extent of papal power. Bouley details the dramatic reorganization of Roman foodways needed to satisfy this demand for meat, as large herds of animals had to be funneled from the countryside to the city. This consumption was ultimately not sustainable, triggering a crisis that fueled sensational rumors of murder and cannibalism and eventually, Bouley contends, sparked the outbreak of civil war, as vassals rebelled against papal oversight.
