Leading experts on greenwashing offer a playbook for achieving competitive advantage by combatting misleading claims and building trust.

Greenwashing has reached epidemic proportions, and consumer confidence in business sustainability commitments is falling. Those most affected by greenwashing are genuine green firms, and companies truly committed to sustainability goals can find it hard to communicate their commitments and distinguish themselves in this sea of greenwash. These companies need to confront their rivals head on to win the trust of stakeholders. From Greenwash to Green Trust offers a new paradigm for how to gain and maintain competitive advantage in a world of exaggerated green claims.

Building on more than a decade of research on greenwashing, Tom Lyon and Wren Montgomery offer a three-step approach for companies determined to rise above their greenwashing competitors:

  • Understand why trust has been broken: First, learn how greenwashing works, and hurts, in today's world.
  • Build trust: Then, look in the mirror, acknowledge your own shortcomings, and substantiate your company's commitment to sustainability goals.
  • Leverage trust: Finally, create powerful relationships to outcompete greenwashers and turn integrity into lasting advantage.

In the end, the message of From Greenwash to Green Trust is a positive one. While there are plenty of businesses doing the "right" thing on sustainability, with this novel strategic approach to beating greenwashing, businesses can center transparency and trust-to restore consumer confidence and support rapid growth.

This proceedings volume offers the latest developments in information and communication technologies (ICTs) in the tourism and hospitality industry. Feature papers presented at the International Federation of IT and Travel & Tourism (IFITT)'s 33rd Annual ENTER International e-Tourism Conference held in Breda, The Netherlands, this book demonstrates the breadth and maturity of contemporary eTourism research with strong focus on AI including large language models (LLMs), GenAI as a research instrument, AI-driven personalization, and the ethical implications of automation. The volume further emphasizes digital ecosystems and governance, with research on smart destinations, digital distribution, blockchain adoption, ICT lifecycles in tourism SMEs, and city metrics.

Information and communication technologies (ICTs) continue to revolutionize travel, tourism, and hospitality. Over 30+ years, the ENTER eTourism conference has been at the forefront of providing insight on the use and impact of new technologies for travel, tourism and hospitality practitioners and researchers. However, the rapid development and deployment of new developments, including generative AI (GenAI), service robotics, IoT, and Extended Realities (XR) technologies, among others, call for a rapid and careful reassessment of ICT in tourism, particularly including ethical and societal considerations.

Bridging the gap between visionary research and practical implementation to foster resilient tourism systems that serve businesses, communities, and the planet, this book is valuable to scholars, researchers, students, and practitioners in tourism and hospitality.

This open access volume employs case studies in selected African countries to investigate the emergence and evolution of sustainable entrepreneurship within the continent. Utilizing a comparative approach, it integrates management, neo-institutional, and entrepreneurship theories to fully understand the meanings and practices of sustainable entrepreneurship across diverse African contexts. Though often viewed as homogenous, entrepreneurship practices in Africa exhibit variations shaped by cultural beliefs. Contributions explore three streams: individual (vision, emotion, rationality, and values and norms), organizational (entrepreneurial orientation, MSP, internal culture, routines), and context (opportunities, industry culture, isomorphisms). Drawing insights from experiences in South Africa, Kenya, Nigeria, Ghana, Morocco, Uganda, and Zimbabwe, this book is a valuable resource for researchers and policymakers focusing on the development of sustainable entrepreneurship in Africa.

This first part of a two-volume work offers a comprehensive exploration of China's ambitious "Made in China 2025" initiative and its broader geopolitical implications. By examining China's strategic shift from a low-cost manufacturing hub to a high-tech powerhouse, chapters provide a critical assessment of the initiative's progress and its impact on global economic dynamics.

In this volume, chapters explore the idea that MIC 2025 operates not merely as an acadeonomic development programme, but as a mechanism for strategic decoupling - a deliberate restructuring of global production networks aimed at insulating China from external vulnerabilities.

Through expert contributions, readers will gain insights into the challenges and opportunities presented by China's industrial strategies, including the semiconductor "chips war" and the new global bipolarity centered around technology and innovation. An essential read for scholars and practitioners in international political economy, Chinese studies, and global economic governance, it offers a nuanced understanding of China's evolving role on the global stage, making it a valuable resource for graduate-level courses and research institutions focused on contemporary China. With its interdisciplinary approach, the book provides a holistic view of China's rise and its implications for the future of global economic and strategic competition.

This book explores Chinese engagement in Africa's mining sector within the context of international business. Conceptual and empirical contributions by diverse authors examine mining activities of Chinese companies in several African countries. Emerging from those contributions is a theory of minimal investment, defined as the degree to which the companies invest minimally in African operations, communities, and countries just for them to get by (i.e., function as normal).

The volume presents four conditions that explain why minimal investment persists as a dominant logic of foreign firm behaviour in Africa. Institutions permit it, strategies enact it, heritage legitimizes it, and reactions stabilize it. Minimal investment has produced order, and order is safety both for firms and often for host institutions alike. Optimal investment, by contrast, introduces 'danger' because it changes the status quo, redistributes power, and mitigates African rather than firm risk. The Theory of Minimal Investment (TMI) reveals how underinvestment is an intentional, albeit seemingly rational, historically embedded, and institutionally sustained strategy of engagement.

Coming at a time in which African countries are seeing a surge of Chinese interest in Africa, this book offers a cautionary tale of the consequences of organizations seeking the 'help' of Chinese companies. It will appeal to International Business studies and strategy researchers interested in interorganizational relationships, particularly from the African perspective.

This book demonstrates how live action roleplay (LARP) and immersive scenario-based training are powerful tools for building high-performing organizations, and establishing competitive advantage. Drawing on organizational psychology and experiential learning, it explains how work itself functions as a socially constructed "game" shaped by goals, roles, and culture-and how intentionally redesigning these elements can shift team dynamics quickly and sustainably. Through practical examples and research-backed methods, the book demonstrates how storytelling, shared narratives, and structured roleplay build trust, accelerate team development, and strengthen decision-making under pressure. It tackles common organizational challenges from conflict resolution and emotional safety to leadership identity, goal alignment, and crisis rehearsal, illustrating how immersive techniques compress months of team learning into hours.

Offering a toolkit of evidence-based and experiential practices, this book equips managers, HR professionals, and consultants as well as scholars, academics, and students with innovative approaches for driving engagement, resilience, and cohesive performance across teams and organizations.

Praise for The LARP Effect

"Watching this work evolve has been a reminder of what meaningful scholarship can be: rigorous, imaginative, and unapologetically useful. This book does not ask readers to adopt a framework, it invites them to step inside a system and see themselves clearly. That is where real learning begins." -- Rosanne Roberts, PhD, Research Liaison, ORS, Capella University

"The danger of our modern society is the stripping of stories into abstractions like data, metrics, and models. Despite its best attempts, modernity does not strip stories, so much as disenchant them and render them invisible to us...The LARP Effect shows us how to glimpse the magic of our every day. Though LARP games and their decisions may be fictional, our actual experience of them grants us perspective on the stories we already live and share with one another, in work, life or any other context." -- David Yu, Summer Program for Applied Rationality and Cognition (SPARC)

"One of the most experienced designers in the world, Balzac brings over 40 years of organizational knowledge and storytelling to the business world, reteaching us how to play the game." -- Ryan Hart, Creative Director, Sinking Ship Creations (Blooloop's Top 50 Immersive Influencer)

"This book reframes leadership in a way that actually sticks. Work is a game of sorts, and this book shows how to design it, so people engage, decide, and perform better. It's practical. It's memorable. And it gets to how organizations really work." - Sid Probstein, CEO, SWIRL

"...[Steve's] ability to capture the essence of a problem and translate it into real world action but in a non-threatening play environment is astounding...this book offers the blueprint for transforming your organizational culture through shared, living stories."--Ronald Espinosa, Director, Google Category, Softchoice, Inc

"Dr. Balzac masterfully blends conceptual innovation, clear and engaging prose, intellectual depth, and practical business insights. His unique LARP approach significantly strengthens team unity, boosts productivity, and enhances ongoing team effectiveness." -- Eric Bloom, Executive Director, IT Management and Leadership Institute

This book examines cyberloafing: employees' use of internet-enabled technologies for personal purposes during paid working time. It addresses a familiar but often misunderstood feature of contemporary work: checking messages, browsing news, using social media, shopping online, or engaging in other non-work digital activity while at work. Rather than treating cyberloafing simply as wasted time or misconduct, the book shows that its meaning depends on context. It may signal boredom, overload, weak engagement, poor role clarity, lack of recovery, or, in some cases, more serious withdrawal from work. The book combines theoretical synthesis, measurement development, cross-cultural comparison, and empirical studies. It develops a clear conceptual framework, validates the CBLS-15 Cyberloafing Scale, and examines cyberloafing across different national contexts, including Poland, Italy, and the United States. It also considers how hybrid work, digital monitoring, and artificial intelligence are changing the boundaries between work, recovery, distraction, and disengagement. The practical contribution is a more balanced approach to managing personal internet use at work. The book argues that broad restrictions and close monitoring are often insufficient and may create additional problems. Instead, organizations need better diagnosis, work design, leadership practices, recovery structures, and ethically responsible digital governance.

This comprehensive Handbook presents an overview of the nature and role of firms in contemporary economies. Leading scholars offer a multidisciplinary perspective that integrates classic and contemporary theories, demonstrating how foundational ideas have evolved in response to globalization, digitalization, and shifting societal expectations.

Moving beyond a narrowly economic perspective, the Handbook conceptualizes the firm as a multi-dimensional institution embedded in complex environments. Contributions address core themes such as economic coordination, organizational design, and legal structure, while also engaging with issues of social and political legitimacy. Rather than advancing a single unified model, the volume positions the 'Theory of the Firm' as a broad and evolving research agenda for understanding contemporary organizational forms. It highlights the analytical value of pluralism and the necessity of interdisciplinary approaches to capturing the complexity of modern firms.

The Handbook on the Theory of the Firm is an essential resource for scholars and students in economics, strategic management, international business, corporate law, and governance. It will also be of interest to policymakers and public-sector researchers concerned with how firms interact with markets and with legal, political, and societal environments.

This book invites readers to explore the uncertainty and moral depth of organisational change as a living, relational experience. Theorising how the field of change studies might evolve in coming years, contributors address the fundamental question: can we shape the future through change?

Chapters adopt diverse theoretical and practical perspectives, analysing both the contemporary and future relevance of change studies. Moving beyond instrumental models and towards ethical understandings of the subject, the book is divided into four thematic parts: change towards meaningful futures, change through connection and collaboration, change as social and systemic practice, and change as inquiry, play and praxis. Contributors consider organisations as part of a broader ecosystem in the Anthropocene, presenting new and exciting pathways for studies of organisational change theory.

Scholars and researchers in organisation studies and change management seeking novel approaches and challenging research questions will greatly benefit from the book's forward-looking insights. Its practical suggestions will be of equal interest to change professionals, consultants, and practitioners, as well as leaders engaged in organisational transformations.

The US Army faces an extraordinary people management challenge: managing more than one million service members worldwide who rotate through new roles every two to three years. For decades, the Army relied on a one-size-fits-all, Industrial Age personnel system that treated individuals as interchangeable parts. While effective in a previous era, this approach is increasingly misaligned with a strategic environment that demands adaptability, innovation, and speed. Recognizing that its legacy system was no longer sufficient, Army leaders undertook a rapid and far-reaching transformation to modernize how talent is identified, developed, and employed.

The Talent Imperative tells the inside story of this transformation. Written by leaders directly involved in designing and implementing these reforms, the book blends scholarly rigor with practical insight to explain the Army's approach to talent management as a strategic source of competitive advantage. It examines how the Army's "Triad of Talent"-a talent attribute framework, talent assessments, and talent markets-enhances the Army's ability to place the right person in the right position at the right time, over time, while giving service members clearer ownership of career opportunities the Army values.

While grounded in the military context, the book speaks to a broad audience of scholars, practitioners, and students of human resource management, public administration, and organizational change. In an era defined by competition for talent, the Army's experience offers transferable lessons for large organizations seeking to adapt their people systems in complex, high-stakes environments.

The book concludes by exploring the lessons and personal philosophies readers can draw for their own careers as managers, employees and businesspeople in a changing world.
