Turkey's foreign policy has changed significantly in the last decade. Once a staunch NATO ally and pro-American force in the predominantly Muslim Middle East, Turkey has pursued a rather independent and contentious foreign policy that has put the country in conflict with virtually every major actor in the region, the US and the EU. Many arguments have been made to account for this sharp turn in Turkey's foreign policy, citing both internal and external factors. This book aims to explain whether or not this shift in Turkish foreign policy has its roots in the attitudes and policy preferences of the Turkish public. By analyzing original data from three nation-wide surveys conducted by the authors in 2017, 2018 and 2019, this book answers key questions regarding the public opinion vis-a-vis multilateralism, unilateralism, use of force, Turkey's foreign policy roles, Islam and nationalism, foreign policy activism vs. isolationism, attitudes towards the US, the EU, Russia and other world powers and neighbors. Targeting such theoretical questions in this breadth, is a novelty for the Turkish foreign policy analysis literature. The book will also make inferences on broader public opinion debates and attitudes vis-a-vis topical issues: Are the Turkish public's preferences reflected in the government's foreign policy or is public opinion shaped by the elite's preferences? Which domestic actors are satisfied, which are not with the new foreign policy? Or, does public opinion favor Turkey's involvement in Middle Eastern conflicts? What is the level of anti-Americanism and anti-EU sentiments in Turkey, and on what factors do they depend?

International institutions, from the WTO to the UN Security Council, face mounting legitimacy challenges. Reforms promising greater procedural fairness are frequently proposed as solutions, but do they actually work? 'After Reform' provides the first systematic empirical answer to this question. Drawing on an original dataset of more than 9,500 legitimacy statements made by member states across three major institutions, Vegard H. Torstad evaluates how procedural-fairness reforms shape states' perceptions of institutional legitimacy over time. Through in-depth case studies of participation reform in the UNFCCC climate negotiations, impartiality reform in GATT/WTO dispute settlement, and transparency reform in the UN Security Council, this book shows that reform effects are real but uneven - and identifies the conditions under which reforms are most likely to succeed. With multilateralism under unprecedented strain, 'After Reform' offers acutely timely new theoretical insights and concrete policy lessons for how to design international cooperation.

Both the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic and the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine became major crises for public managers in the Visegrad 4 states of the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, and Slovakia. Each of those states responded in different ways to the two crises, based on their ideologies and levels of capabilities. Of course, the two crises themselves were very different in terms of their impact on the public and the set of public managers that needed to make critical decisions. This work proposes that there are three stages in crisis management, and that theoretical perspective will lay the groundwork for analysis of the four states. Those stages include Risk Assessment, Risk Management, and Risk Communication. Taken together, they offer a portrayal of the Resilience of each state in terms of both public management and the general public.

This book presents and discusses concepts of schizoanalysis that serve as theoretical tools for analyzing contemporary political processes and modes of subjectivation. Originally developed by the philosopher Gilles Deleuze and the psychoanalyst and activist Felix Guattari, schizoanalysis is a critical political psychology that analyzes psychological phenomena in light of social, historical-cultural, aesthetic, and political issues. It provides an original analytical approach that expands the repertoires of psychology and the human sciences by apprehending phenomena in the resulting relationship between power, desiring investments, and the production of subjectivation - that is, in the articulation between politics, psychology, and subjectivity.

With accessible language, this volume introduces the reader to the dynamics of 'Deleuze-Guattarian' thought, as well as to the specific terminologies that express it, based on eight fundamental themes in the articulation between psychology and politics, which contribute to understanding the current scenario of social effervescence and crisis: power; subjectivity; institutions and codes; capitalism; psychopolitical practices and assemblages; microfascisms; the State and public policies; and social movements.

Due to its didactic nature, this book can be used as an introduction to schizoanalysis as an analytical tool that can be used by researchers to study contemporary political and subjective processes, as well as a didactic text in social psychology and political psychology courses.

This is a revised and updated English translation of a book originally published in Brazilian Portuguese. The translation was done with the help of artificial intelligence. A subsequent human revision was done primarily in terms of content.

This book explores the intricate relationship between time and politics, offering a comprehensive analysis of how temporal strategies have shaped political discourse in Poland from 1989 to 2024. By equating social time with political time, the monograph reveals the continuity of change despite attempts to disrupt it, providing a unique perspective on the socio-political transformations that have occurred since the fall of communism. Key concepts such as the manipulation of temporal strategies, the use of time as a political tool, and the impact of watershed moments are thoroughly examined. The book delves into how politicians have used time to influence public perception, create political narratives, and maintain power. By tracing the evolution of these strategies, the author uncovers the profound effects of temporal manipulation on political competition and societal change. Ideal for scholars, researchers, and students of political science and history, this monograph offers valuable insights into the dynamic interplay between time and politics. It is an essential resource for anyone seeking to understand the complexities of political discourse and the role of time in shaping political realities.

Understanding the world of art - particularly antiquities and archaeological artifacts - requires tracing how objects are removed from the ground, displaced by conflict or economic hardship, and ultimately reappear in the international art market. The odyssey of an artifact from its excavation site to an auction house, a private collection, or a museum display case raises a host of pressing concerns about the fragility of cultural heritage but also the global mechanisms that sustain its circulation. In recent years, growing awareness of a possible link between the illegal antiquities trade and terrorist financing has brought new scrutiny to regions marked by war and instability, particularly in the Middle East. In such places, archaeological sites are especially vulnerable to looting and illicit excavation, with the profits from these "blood antiquities" sometimes flowing back to fund further violence.

Art for War examines how this transformation in perception - from an archaeological concern to a matter of international security - reshaped the global response to antiquities trafficking. Viewing the trade through a security lens, the book offers scholars, policymakers, and students of international affairs a new way to understand how the protection of cultural heritage became entangled with the politics of counterterrorism and global security sparking new debates over art, heritage, and security.

Infrastructures, such as the roads that connect our cities and the water mains that deliver to our homes, serve as the backbone of society. This book investigates how policymakers can improve infrastructure procurement in the face of strategic behavior and incomplete information. Focusing on Public-Private Partnership (PPP), the book develops a theoretical framework for modeling contracts that avoid corruption and unnecessary renegotiation. The book employs tools from mechanism design, principal agent theory, and restless bandits to address possible challenges in PPPs, offering comprehensive examples of how to design models to leverage insights in real-world scenarios. The book also examines the limits of incentive design and scenarios where its power is limited. Readers will be able to directly apply these models to their research and practice and use the theories and techniques presented in the book to build their own models and inventive solutions for complex PPP problems.

Different nations punish differently, but how can we characterize this difference, and what accounts for it? Punishment and Politics in Contemporary Italy: A Dual Penality answers these questions by focusing on Italian penal policy between 1970 and 2019. It looks at a nation whose penality is neither solely punitive nor solely moderate, but both: a dual penality that challenges our assumptions on the shape and the causes of contemporary Western punishment. In so doing, this book provides an example of how Western punishment can be conceptualized in a manner sensitive to the multifarious, even contradictory, penal impulses within different nations. Using a theoretical and historical approach, this book offers a systematic account of Italian penality that refuses to fall back on notions of "Italian exceptionalism" or simple "convergence" around a Western punitive paradigm. Placing the Italian case in conversation with key theories in the contemporary sociology of punishment, it also provides an innovative mid-level theorization that combines political economy, political sociology, and penology. Punishment and Politics in Contemporary Italy argues that politics-institutions, ideologies, and their dynamic interaction over time-are a crucial variable to understand Italian punishment. Seen through this lens, the nation's dual penality emerges as the penality of a polity characterized by stratified political membership, a contested state, and a hybrid political economy. This book makes the case that punishment scholarship should sharpen its focus on politics in order to better understand how conditions of political membership affect the shape and distribution of punishment across contexts.

This book offers a comprehensive and interdisciplinary exploration of the complex relationship between innovation, law, and security in the context of dual use technologies in space. As space activities expand rapidly, technologies developed for civilian purposes increasingly carry potential military or strategic applications, creating both opportunities and significant governance challenges. This volume examines these dynamics, providing a holistic understanding of the risks and benefits associated with dual use in space exploration and utilization.

At its core, the book brings together perspectives from legal scholarship, engineering, international relations, and ethics to unpack the multifaceted nature of dual use technologies. It traces the evolution of international space law and regulatory frameworks, while also addressing technological advancements such as dual use satellites and innovations for space debris mitigation. In parallel, it explores the geopolitical implications of these technologies, highlighting how they influence global power structures, cooperation, and competition in outer space.

The volume also engages with critical ethical questions surrounding dual use applications, including issues of responsibility, transparency, and the societal impact of emerging space technologies. Through a combination of case studies, historical analysis, and forward-looking insights, it provides a nuanced perspective on how innovation in space can be governed responsibly.

By bridging disciplinary boundaries, this book aims to support informed decision-making and foster dialogue among policymakers, legal practitioners, engineers, and academics. It ultimately contributes to the development of robust frameworks for managing dual use technologies, ensuring that space innovation advances in a manner that is secure, ethical, and aligned with global interests.

The concept of power has long been a central yet contested part of the study of international relations. But power, like all other political concepts, has a history of its own. This book tells the story of how power among polities has been understood from the early modern era to the present day, arguing that conceptions of power in international politics have been characterized by significant continuities and swift ruptures during this period. It shows how notions of power have spread across cultures and evolved into an apple of discord that has drawn polities together into an international system premised on its uniformity and scarcity. Power Among Polities is the first intellectual history of power in international relations to date.

Why has multilateral peacebuilding in conflict-ridden states emerged as a depoliticized practice that rarely engages with local actors and agendas? And why has depoliticization persisted despite continued criticisms? Claiming Impartiality offers an innovative answer to the puzzling persistence of depoliticization in post-war peacebuilding that focuses on the institutional mandates, interests, and practices of those international and bilateral organizations that design and implement most peacebuilding interventions.

Drawing on and expanding a Bourdieusian field perspective, the book examines international organizations as actors in multiple fields of global governance. Using the case studies of Bosnia and Herzegovina and Timor-Leste, it traces the emergence and transformation of peacebuilding practices by leading international and bilateral organizations during the first two decades of the field's existence. The organizational lens highlights the tensions that exist between the objectives of simultaneously acting as a peacebuilding organization and as a peacekeeping, humanitarian, or development organization whose practices are to varying degrees committed to observing the twin principles of impartiality and neutrality. By thinking through these sometimes contradictory roles, the book offers new insights into how these organizations sideline questions of political agency in favor of expanding their influence into related fields of global governance. Claiming Impartiality discusses the future of peacebuilding and explores avenues for addressing political challenges to peace itself.

This Handbook, an international endeavor in cultural political psychology, integrates global experts' insights to examine the psychological role of sign systems in policy, power, and politics. The focus is on how meaning, derived from action, influences power negotiations, requiring an exploration of the individual and their co-created signs. Addressing the challenge of converting rich theories into practical applications, the Handbook aspires to clarify complex phenomena, promoting a holistic understanding of individuals, communities, and the interplay of symbols, identity, and politics. By democratizing discourse and promoting inclusivity, especially from non-Western and underrepresented contexts, we hope to unravel the world's intricate political tapestries.

This book offers a rigorous and historically grounded analysis of Black women's political thought, activism, and institutional engagement across six decades. This book begins with 1965-a pivotal year in which the Voting Rights Act fundamentally transformed political participation for African Americans and, notably, the year Kamala Harris was born. This temporal convergence serves as the book's organizing framework, illustrating how the expansion of voting rights and the evolution of Black feminist politics created the conditions that made Harris's Vice Presidency possible. Drawing on political science, history, gender studies, and Black feminist theory, the chapters trace major developments in U.S. political life from 1965 to 2025. Topics include the interventions of Michelle Wallace, Ntozake Shange, and Alice Walker, as well as the implications of the Clarence Thomas-Anita Hill hearings for understanding gendered political vulnerability. The analysis also engages the Obama, Trump, and Biden administrations, showing how contemporary movements-including Black Lives Matter, #MeToo, and the resistance to book bans-extend a longer tradition of Black feminist political critique. The text foregrounds key analytical concepts such as linked fate and Black feminist epistemology, making it an essential resource for scholars and students of American politics, African American studies, and feminist theory. By situating Kamala Harris's Vice Presidency within a broader historical trajectory, the book demonstrates that Black feminist political behavior is indispensable to understanding the development of modern U.S. democracy.

With each edition of Black Feminist Politics, Duchess Harris solidifies its position as an essential and enduring text that affirms the vital importance of using a Black Feminist analysis to interpret US politics, society, and culture.

This book offers a groundbreaking philosophical investigation into the political logic of neoliberalism. Moving beyond policy analysis, Hubert Gabrisch uncovers the conceptual roots of neoliberal thinking in the long intellectual arc from classical liberalism to the Austrian School, ordoliberalism, the Chicago School, and Public Choice theory. He shows how the prioritisation of individual freedom over democratic sovereignty-central to neoliberal thought-produces inherently fragile political orders, often resolved through authoritarian or technocratic forms of state power. Through a sweeping genealogical analysis, the book reveals how neoliberal arguments about markets, governance, and risk have shaped modern statecraft, from Europe's post-war reconstruction to contemporary transformations in China and Russia.

Bridging political philosophy, intellectual history, and political economy, this compelling study illuminates the deep tensions at the heart of liberal-democratic orders and explains why neoliberalism repeatedly survives crisis through adaptation.

What explains the varying ideological profiles of social democratic parties in contemporary Western Europe? And why have some still accepted austerity after the Great Recession? This book argues that the answer lies primarily in structural conditions: the context-specific configurations of external constraints - economic globalisation, regional economic integration in the Eurozone, and sovereign debt - that shape the political room available to social democrats when defining their electoral programmes. Drawing on empirical evidence from 20 Western European countries between 1990 and 2019, and combining cross-national quantitative analysis with in-depth qualitative evidence on party rhetoric, the book develops and rigorously probes a configurational structural explanation for ideological differences within the social democratic party family. The findings carry urgent implications: where external constraints are most pressing, genuine ideological renewal may be structurally precluded. A must-read for scholars and practitioners concerned with the future of centre-left politics and the state of representative democracy.

Islampolitik: The Role of Islam in Modern-State Building examines the interrelationship between Islam and state-building in global modernity. Synthesizing scholarship from the fields of sociology, political science, history, religious studies, Middle East, and Islamic studies, this book brings together theories from both below (subjectivities) and above (governance) into one comprehensive resource.

Islampolitik investigates how modern states draw on religion, specifically Islam, when creating templates for subjectivity formation of individuals and communities as part of their broader governance strategies. The book provides a needed challenge to the long-held perception amongst scholars of governance and modernity: namely that Islam is a source of pre-modern rationales creating obstacles to modern governance and state maintenance processes. The book provides empirical insights into the connection between global modernity and modern frames for identity construction.

A Critical Archaeology of Politics takes the reader on a journey across various ancient worlds to examine how to reconstruct their politics in a more coherent, imaginative, and accurate way. Drawing on non-Western epistemologies, relational ontologies, and ancient texts, this book attempts to eliminate our present concerns to recognize the often surprising power dynamics that shaped ancient politics. From Neolithic Tuerkiye, the Archaic Mississippi, to Medieval Western Europe and the Maya world, the reader engages with the gods of Land, magical politics, and travelling princes to explore how ancient politicians may have conceived of their world in ways which dramatically differ from our own. By surveying both the promises and pitfalls of anthropological archaeology, students, scholars, and the general public alike learn how to deconstruct their present to better reconstruct political pasts.

This book asks what peace means when the state wages war against its own citizens in the name of security in the war on drugs. Set in Rio de Janeiro, a deeply unequal city where life chances are shaped by race, class, gender and neighbourhood, it questions whose peace is protected, and at whose expense. Tracing the historical racialisation, marginalisation and criminalisation of the favelas, the book shows how this has resulted in complex forms of hybrid governance involving criminal groups, police and the state. It conceptualizes urban violence in Rio as a form of performative, necropolitical state war-making, where a discourse of security sustains deadly and inefficient operations in the favelas. In this violent context, the book explores favela peace formation as a grassroots alternative, in which residents construct new forms of nonviolent politics and envision more just and peaceful futures, offering important insights for rethinking and decolonizing peace.

How can a small democracy resist the influence of a powerful authoritarian neighbor? Taiwan is frequently praised for its successful economic development and peaceful transition to democracy, serving as a model for other developing countries. However, it faces substantial challenges, both from internal political divisions and external geopolitical pressures. Taiwan's political landscape is shaped by several significant cleavages: national identity and ethnic disparities, economic inequality and class conflict, and generational and cultural differences. The greatest challenge to Taiwan's democracy comes from the influence of China, which has exploited these cleavages through economic leverage, propaganda, and political interference.

Under the heavy influence of Beijing's sharp power, Taiwan's democracy often faces threats of regression. Whenever China escalates its tactics, Taiwan's civil society has mobilized in response, playing a crucial role in resisting Beijing's strategies and defending democratic institutions. Thung-Hong Lin examines case studies - such as the 2014 Sunflower Movement, the 2019 support for the Hong Kong protests, and recent social movements in 2024 - to demonstrate how Taiwan's vibrant civil society is a key source of democratic resilience. This book also situates Taiwan's struggle within the broader context of US-China relations, showing how global geopolitics over the past half-century has shaped the island's destiny.

The book is a significant contribution to the body of existing migration studies study and is genuinely comprehensive in its covering. In addition to the many people in Bangladesh, the global north, and South Asia whose concern is extremely practical rather than academic because they must coexist with the system in order for it to function. The Rohingya situation is a severe humanitarian disaster that necessitates a thorough comprehension of the media's function in influencing public opinion and foreign policy. The effectiveness of media strategies in the Rohingya repatriation process is investigated in this study, which offers insightful information to help governments, media outlets, and humanitarian organizations enhance their crisis management initiatives.

Why do millions of Russians trust state television even when its lies seem obvious? How Propaganda Wins offers a bold new answer. This book argues that authoritarian media doesn't just persuade or intimidate but it serves. Drawing on cutting-edge analysis of Russian prime-time propaganda reporting and extensive original surveys, the book introduces the theory of 'service propaganda,' the strategy of winning loyalty by affirming citizens' identities, validating their worldview, and meeting their everyday informational needs. The result is genuine trust that makes citizens receptive to disinformation, resistant to independent journalism, and willing to accept a brutal war. Comparing Russia to autocracies from China to Hungary, and drawing lessons that reach into democratic societies, How Propaganda Wins is a crucial account of how modern propaganda works and what it takes to fight it.

Russia's devastating invasion of Ukraine in 2022 is a manifestation of a wider phenomenon: Russia's new, post-Soviet imperialism. This book provides a theoretically informed, critical account of Russian imperialism that is attentive to the interplay between economy and ideology, coercion and hegemony, structure and agency. While economic developments go a long way toward explaining the reemergence of Russia's imperialist impulses in the twenty-first century, a purely economic logic cannot account for the dramatic shift in Russian imperialism beginning with the annexation of Crimea and the instigation of a separatist insurgency in the Donbas. Nor can objective geopolitical developments, such as US and NATO military deployments, provide an adequate explanation for this shift. Instead, this book shows how the Kremlin's reaction to the Maidan revolution was rooted in the ideological consolidation of the previous years: the emergence of a total ideology that designates the West as Russia's eternal enemy and Ukraine as the West's geopolitical pawn. Ilya Budraitskis and Ilya Matveev examine Russian foreign policy and the Kremlin's project to remake the Russian people to better serve its imperialist agenda.

Germany is an environmental pathbreaker among industrial societies, maintaining its export-driven economy while reducing greenhouse gas emissions and committing to carbon-neutrality by 2045. Yet it was ordinary citizens rather than bureaucrats or industry who generated its most durable policy solutions. Drawing on a range of case studies from the twentieth century to the present, Carol Hager and Thomas M. Lekan show how local residents combined social and ecological agendas and often defied government officials or corporate interests. These citizens promoted renewable energy, accessible public transportation, sustainable housing, biosphere reserves, and urban green spaces. Each chapter advances a three-pronged understanding of Germany's sustainability culture anchored by a deep sense of place; a 'do-it-yourself' mentality; and the generative power of conflict. By showing how a highly industrialized country became ecologically wiser, this study seeks to re-energize conversations about climate action and green transitions in societies across the globe.

This open access book offers the first thorough analysis of the role of civil defense in NATO security discourse and development over the years, pinpointing critical junctures and historical events. Its novel contribution is the analysis of NATO's adoption and implementation of resilience as policy, a strategic concept, and later as a new body, the resilience committee. It explores how resilience shapes the role of civil defense and becomes a natural part of national defense and international security, and provides new insights into the knowledge of this contested concept and its adaptability once it enters a security discourse.

In terms of policy implications, one of the book's key contributions is its careful examination of the intricate roles ascribed by civil administration, civil society, market actors, and the broader populace. By explicitly addressing the social and political dynamics that have shaped NATO both historically and in the present day, it aims to ignite vital conversations around the implications of military alliances on democracy, accountability, and their influence over the internal political affairs of member states. This sheds light on the interconnectedness of these elements and encourages readers to critically reflect on the power structures at play and their far-reaching effects.

This book examines the renewed geopolitical and socio-economic centrality of the enlarged Mediterranean within the contemporary global order. It explores the major political, economic and cultural transformations shaping the region, highlighting how the Mediterranean basin has re-emerged as a strategic space marked by regional crises, international competition and complex interdependencies.

Adopting a historical and interdisciplinary perspective, the volume analyses the evolving dynamics that have redefined the Mediterranean. Particular attention is devoted to the interaction between geopolitical rivalries, socio-economic transformations and regional instability, and to the long-term historical processes that shape relations between the two shores.

The book is organised into two main sections. The first section, The New Centrality of the Mediterranean Basin: Trends and Dynamics, investigates the broader drivers that are redefining the region's strategic importance. The second section, Hotspots of Crisis and Regional Interferences in the Mediterranean, focuses on specific areas affected by the 2011-2012 uprisings.

The contributions highlight how the Mediterranean has become a critical crossroads of global change, offering a holistic interpretation of the interactions between political, economic and social dynamics that shape the region today.

In recent decades, US voting has not only polarized but also nationalized: state-level voting choices increasingly reflect national allegiances. Such cross-level nationalization can undermine accountability. Yet understanding its sources - and whether it is distinctively American - requires comparative data. The authors assemble a novel data set linking 146,934 subnational and national election returns across 14 European and American democracies over several decades, supplemented with surveys. They find that nationalization has been steady and high for decades in most countries; the US is an outlier only in having nationalized recently. Their findings challenge monocausal explanations emphasizing media or public opinion. Instead, greater subnational authority and stronger subnational attachments predict lower nationalization. They also uncover ties between nationalization and affective polarization. More polarized voters are more likely to cast congruent ballots, though at the country level this link is driven by the US. This title is available as Open Access on Cambridge Core.
