This book presents and discusses concepts of schizoanalysis that serve as theoretical tools for analyzing contemporary political processes and modes of subjectivation. Originally developed by the philosopher Gilles Deleuze and the psychoanalyst and activist Felix Guattari, schizoanalysis is a critical political psychology that analyzes psychological phenomena in light of social, historical-cultural, aesthetic, and political issues. It provides an original analytical approach that expands the repertoires of psychology and the human sciences by apprehending phenomena in the resulting relationship between power, desiring investments, and the production of subjectivation - that is, in the articulation between politics, psychology, and subjectivity.

With accessible language, this volume introduces the reader to the dynamics of 'Deleuze-Guattarian' thought, as well as to the specific terminologies that express it, based on eight fundamental themes in the articulation between psychology and politics, which contribute to understanding the current scenario of social effervescence and crisis: power; subjectivity; institutions and codes; capitalism; psychopolitical practices and assemblages; microfascisms; the State and public policies; and social movements.

Due to its didactic nature, this book can be used as an introduction to schizoanalysis as an analytical tool that can be used by researchers to study contemporary political and subjective processes, as well as a didactic text in social psychology and political psychology courses.

This is a revised and updated English translation of a book originally published in Brazilian Portuguese. The translation was done with the help of artificial intelligence. A subsequent human revision was done primarily in terms of content.

Political consumerism is an important form of political participation in which citizens use market choices - boycotting and buycotting - to express political concerns and influence global economic and political institutions. Adopting a comparative perspective, the Element integrates evidence from a meta-analysis (109 studies and 1,300 tests), global survey data (66 countries and 97,000 respondents), and original cross-national research (5 countries and 7,500 respondents). Using each data source, the authors examine the roles of resources (education, income, and information/news), engagement (political interest, ideology, and environmental concern), and mobilization (online group ties and offline organization membership) in political consumerism and how these factors vary across countries in explaining political consumerism. The authors find that organizational membership, group ties on social media, political interest, and political ideology are consistent covariates of boycotting and buycotting, whereas education, information/news, and environmental concern depend on the country, political context, campaign, and activity (boycotting or buycotting).

Both the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic and the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine became major crises for public managers in the Visegrad 4 states of the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, and Slovakia. Each of those states responded in different ways to the two crises, based on their ideologies and levels of capabilities. Of course, the two crises themselves were very different in terms of their impact on the public and the set of public managers that needed to make critical decisions. This work proposes that there are three stages in crisis management, and that theoretical perspective will lay the groundwork for analysis of the four states. Those stages include Risk Assessment, Risk Management, and Risk Communication. Taken together, they offer a portrayal of the Resilience of each state in terms of both public management and the general public.

Islampolitik: The Role of Islam in Modern-State Building examines the interrelationship between Islam and state-building in global modernity. Synthesizing scholarship from the fields of sociology, political science, history, religious studies, Middle East, and Islamic studies, this book brings together theories from both below (subjectivities) and above (governance) into one comprehensive resource.

Islampolitik investigates how modern states draw on religion, specifically Islam, when creating templates for subjectivity formation of individuals and communities as part of their broader governance strategies. The book provides a needed challenge to the long-held perception amongst scholars of governance and modernity: namely that Islam is a source of pre-modern rationales creating obstacles to modern governance and state maintenance processes. The book provides empirical insights into the connection between global modernity and modern frames for identity construction.

The security landscape in Europe has changed dramatically in the 2020s. Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022, as well as the shifting transatlantic relations during the second Trump presidency, have challenged long-standing assumptions about stability and cooperation. This book examines these changes through the perspectives of authors from 23 countries across Europe and Central Asia.

Organized by region, the volume employs Robert Jervis's theory of perception and misperception as a unifying framework to demonstrate how states perceive and react to emerging risks and uncertainties. It shows how national security outlooks are shaped by local concerns and broader geopolitical shifts.

Additionally, the book examines how countries are repositioning themselves in relation to the European Union, NATO, and the OSCE, offering a timely and nuanced account of an increasingly complex security order.

This book is woven around feminist and decolonial critical approaches to make sense of the implementation of Colombia's 2016 peace agreement. Colombia offers an intriguing case: the country presented itself as an international example, a trailblazer in implementing a gender approach and a champion in designing innovative mechanisms for transitional justice and the reintegration of ex-combatants

This book, however, shows the breach between thoughtful, comprehensive, and inclusive policies and the actual practice of implementing them. It provides much-needed evidence of the actual implementation of these policies, which serves as a compelling example for other peace processes worldwide. The book combines strong theoretical feminist and decolonial engagement with in-depth empirical data from leading experts in peacebuilding in Colombia. Its chapters provide a thorough analysis of sustainable peace, foregrounding the contributions of ethnic groups, women, and LGBTQI+ communities. By including reflections from both scholars and practitioners, the book appeals to academic, policymaking, and practitioner audiences.

This offer of leading-edge thinking reframes the debate on national security at the dawn of the Third Space Age

During the First Space Age, President Eisenhower rallied democracies to defend freedom while preserving peace at a time when the hydrogen bomb and intercontinental ballistic missiles threatened humanity. Nearly seventy-five years later, the world stands on the cusp of a third era of space exploration, where space is simultaneously a domain for warfighting, diplomacy, science, and commerce.

Waging Peace in Orbit pays tribute to Eisenhower's multidimensional political-economic approach to national security while offering leading-edge thinking about the dawn of today's Third Space Age. While other volumes critique individual space strategies, this book uses a wider lens, adapting the Pathways to Peace framework laid out in Hans Morgenthau's classic Politics among Nations. By enlisting leading experts, this comprehensive volume examines defense strategy, space commercialization, scientific exploration, legal norms, and war planning, providing a holistic understanding of modern issues in space.

Waging Peace in Orbit enlarges the debate on space security in increasingly crowded orbits for policymakers, members of the military, national security professionals, scholars, and students interested in security studies and space policy.

Fresh insights from a unique new data set inform understanding of Pakistan's strategic thinking

Is Pakistan an aggressive, revisionist state-or a deeply insecure one whose choices reflect anxiety as much as ambition? Outside observers and many scholars have assumed the former, attributing Pakistan's behavior to a strategic culture defined by hostility and risk acceptance. But this conclusion has rested on surprisingly thin evidentiary foundations, often relying on narrow samples of Pakistani sources to showcase continuity while overlooking debate, adaptation, and change.

Insecurity and Ambition seeks to remedy this by using a unique new data set of Pakistan's official and semiofficial strategic literature to examine how ideas, culture, and external pressures shape how the country's strategic thinkers talk about the goals, threats, and strategies that it should adopt as it confronts an uncertain world. Edited by Christopher Clary and Sameer Lalwani, the book features insights from leading and rising scholars, ensuring a balance of local and international perspectives on the most pressing contemporary security issues.

Scholars and practitioners of South Asian security and international relations from various research traditions will gain fresh insights into how Pakistan views India, United States-Pakistan relations, Pakistan's shift toward China, Pakistan's nuclear program, the climate crisis in South Asia, and more.

Was Brexit more than a political and economic rupture - was it a civilisational one?

This book uncovers the cultural and identity foundations of Brexit, exploring how British elites came to see the UK not just as a nation, but as a civilisation state. Moving beyond party politics and policy debates, it traces how leaders and thinkers evoked Britain's exceptionalism - a sovereign, maritime, and Atlantic power with a global destiny rooted in empire. These narratives, mirroring those of civilisation states, shaped the country's uneasy relationship with Europe, and its final decision to withdraw from the EU. By revealing the deep historical and symbolic layers beneath the Brexit process, the book discloses how civilisational thinking is used to strengthen a nation's global voice, but drives it towards isolation.

In an increasingly volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous security environment, military leaders are required to operate under conditions of extreme pressure, uncertainty, and risk. Military Leadership in Extreme Situations: An International Perspective brings together leading military scholars from around the world to examine how armed forces understand, train, and enact leadership in such demanding contexts. This edited volume presents sixteen country case studies spanning six continents, offering unique insights into diverse military systems, operational environments, and leadership traditions. From combat operations and peacekeeping missions to disaster response and hybrid threats, the contributions highlight how leaders are prepared to make decisions under pressure, maintain cohesion, and act ethically in situations where consequences are immediate and profound. Bridging the gap between theory and practice, the book emphasizes adaptability, resilience, communication, and the critical role of followership in extreme contexts. By comparing national approaches and identifying shared challenges, it advances a deeper understanding of leadership as a relational and context-dependent process. This volume is essential reading for scholars and practitioners in military studies, leadership research, security studies, and crisis management, as well as for professionals engaged in preparing leaders for high-stakes environments.

Understanding the world of art - particularly antiquities and archaeological artifacts - requires tracing how objects are removed from the ground, displaced by conflict or economic hardship, and ultimately reappear in the international art market. The odyssey of an artifact from its excavation site to an auction house, a private collection, or a museum display case raises a host of pressing concerns about the fragility of cultural heritage but also the global mechanisms that sustain its circulation. In recent years, growing awareness of a possible link between the illegal antiquities trade and terrorist financing has brought new scrutiny to regions marked by war and instability, particularly in the Middle East. In such places, archaeological sites are especially vulnerable to looting and illicit excavation, with the profits from these "blood antiquities" sometimes flowing back to fund further violence.

Art for War examines how this transformation in perception - from an archaeological concern to a matter of international security - reshaped the global response to antiquities trafficking. Viewing the trade through a security lens, the book offers scholars, policymakers, and students of international affairs a new way to understand how the protection of cultural heritage became entangled with the politics of counterterrorism and global security sparking new debates over art, heritage, and security.

Amid North Korea's advancing nuclear capabilities and the declining credibility of U.S. extended deterrence, South Korea has a strong motive to pursue its own nuclear deterrent. With its advanced nuclear energy program, South Korea possesses the means to develop nuclear weapons indigenously. However, its opportunity to do so is constrained by the prohibitive economic, security and reputational costs of nuclear armament. To circumvent these costs, Seoul is engaging in "nuclear hedging," pursuing the capability to develop nuclear weapons rapidly while stopping short of actual weaponization.

Drawing on Korean- and English-language documents, archival materials, and interviews with South Korean security experts, Lami Kim offers the most comprehensive analysis to date of South Korea's pursuit of nuclear hedging as an alternative to both nuclear restraint and outright nuclear armament. South Korea's renunciation of its nuclear weapons program in the 1970s - and its subsequent restraint - should not be mistaken for an absence of nuclear ambition grounded in confidence in U.S. extended deterrence. Instead, under both conservative and progressive governments, Seoul has sought the ability to acquire nuclear weapons rapidly, if necessary, as an insurance policy. A major contribution to the literature on nuclear deterrence, nonproliferation, and Korean studies, this book delivers timely and insightful policy recommendations for both Washington and Seoul.

This book explores the intricate relationship between time and politics, offering a comprehensive analysis of how temporal strategies have shaped political discourse in Poland from 1989 to 2024. By equating social time with political time, the monograph reveals the continuity of change despite attempts to disrupt it, providing a unique perspective on the socio-political transformations that have occurred since the fall of communism. Key concepts such as the manipulation of temporal strategies, the use of time as a political tool, and the impact of watershed moments are thoroughly examined. The book delves into how politicians have used time to influence public perception, create political narratives, and maintain power. By tracing the evolution of these strategies, the author uncovers the profound effects of temporal manipulation on political competition and societal change. Ideal for scholars, researchers, and students of political science and history, this monograph offers valuable insights into the dynamic interplay between time and politics. It is an essential resource for anyone seeking to understand the complexities of political discourse and the role of time in shaping political realities.

Different nations punish differently, but how can we characterize this difference, and what accounts for it? Punishment and Politics in Contemporary Italy: A Dual Penality answers these questions by focusing on Italian penal policy between 1970 and 2019. It looks at a nation whose penality is neither solely punitive nor solely moderate, but both: a dual penality that challenges our assumptions on the shape and the causes of contemporary Western punishment. In so doing, this book provides an example of how Western punishment can be conceptualized in a manner sensitive to the multifarious, even contradictory, penal impulses within different nations. Using a theoretical and historical approach, this book offers a systematic account of Italian penality that refuses to fall back on notions of "Italian exceptionalism" or simple "convergence" around a Western punitive paradigm. Placing the Italian case in conversation with key theories in the contemporary sociology of punishment, it also provides an innovative mid-level theorization that combines political economy, political sociology, and penology. Punishment and Politics in Contemporary Italy argues that politics-institutions, ideologies, and their dynamic interaction over time-are a crucial variable to understand Italian punishment. Seen through this lens, the nation's dual penality emerges as the penality of a polity characterized by stratified political membership, a contested state, and a hybrid political economy. This book makes the case that punishment scholarship should sharpen its focus on politics in order to better understand how conditions of political membership affect the shape and distribution of punishment across contexts.

This book asks what peace means when the state wages war against its own citizens in the name of security in the war on drugs. Set in Rio de Janeiro, a deeply unequal city where life chances are shaped by race, class, gender and neighbourhood, it questions whose peace is protected, and at whose expense. Tracing the historical racialisation, marginalisation and criminalisation of the favelas, the book shows how this has resulted in complex forms of hybrid governance involving criminal groups, police and the state. It conceptualizes urban violence in Rio as a form of performative, necropolitical state war-making, where a discourse of security sustains deadly and inefficient operations in the favelas. In this violent context, the book explores favela peace formation as a grassroots alternative, in which residents construct new forms of nonviolent politics and envision more just and peaceful futures, offering important insights for rethinking and decolonizing peace.

This book offers a historical review of globalization, an in-depth analysis of its current crises, along with predictions and practical prescriptions for its future development. Drawing on comparative studies of political and financial systems, economic models, intellectual cultures and ideologies, scientific and technological development, and crises management (pandemic, environment, etc.,), it argues that it's necessary to build a new form of globalization which is more conducive to global peace and prosperity. Also this book discusses how the Covid-19 pandemic is a watershed event that will have a significant impact on the future course of globalization. The strict lockdown policies implemented across the world highlight the threat that pandemics can pose to globalization, and have amplified the voices advocating Sino-American decoupling. However, the author is confident that it will lead to an alternative form of globalization instead by highlighting the need for greater international cooperation when facing health crises on a global scale.

In A Liberal Nationalist Theory of Secession, Ruairi Maguire argues that nations can have a right to unilaterally secede from a legitimate, non-usurping state. They are special in this regard. There is a presumption in favour of collective autonomy by nations, establishing this claim by showing that co-nationality can be an intrinsically valuable relationship and that this grounds a strong claim to self-determination. There are no considerations that always defeat the presumption in favour of collective autonomy by nations. For example, unilateral secession from a legitimate state need not wrong citizens of the remainder state by wrongfully taking territory. As such, nations^-^and only nations^-^can have an undefeated right to unilaterally secede from a legitimate state. Maguire establishes the second part of the claim above^-^that nations are special in this regard^-^in two ways. First, he argues against more permissive accounts of self-determination, accounts that attempt to ground a right to secede for any territorially concentrated group capable of performing the basic functions of statehood and governing in a satisfactory manner. Secondly, he argues that despite the fact that other kinds of groups^-^such as religious groups^-^share the features in virtue of which nations have a claim to self-determination, the content of these groups' identities is too narrow to be the basis of a pluralistic political identity. As such, they would wrong members of minority groups within their territory by seceding. This is not true of nations.

Social change requires the emergence of a collective subject that can foster solidarity within and across national boundaries. But how can such a collective come together in our current era of liberal individualism and the pursuit of maximum profit? In The Politics of the Have-Nots, Hae Yeon Choo theorizes how this collective might cohere and mobilize, drawing on deep engagement with grassroots movements in South Korea and its diaspora over the past two decades.

Disillusionment has grown across the globe from the 2000s to the present. Wealth inequalities have consigned the marginalized to the shadows even as economies have expanded. By bridging five separate instances of mass mobilization during this period, Choo demonstrates the convergence of the collective political sensibility of the Have-nots. These are people who have experienced distinct but overlapping forms of violent dispossession, whether by evictions, layoffs, sexual harassment, immigration raids, and even mass shootings. Confronting these diverse forms of violence, the politics of the Have-nots challenge the cultural and material hegemony of neoliberal capitalism. They propose a critical theory of radical democracy based on expansive solidarity, taking on the struggles of others as their own.

While the mobilizations chronicled in this book are geographically centered in South Korea, many were transnational and linked by the collective vision of the Have-nots. Together, Choo shows, they become a powerful vision of the promise of radical democracy and emancipation from the margins.

Contrary to what German historians often claim, the avant-garde movements of the early 20th century did not peter out or even fail. Although the Nazi dictatorship destroyed the Bauhaus, Dada, and their legacy in Germany in the 1930s, it also triggered a wave of emigration. Many of those who were displaced went to the United States, where they contributed to the avant-gardization of the art world, and where subsequent generations were able to continue developing the project that had remained unfinished in Europe.

Walter Benjamin coined the term "politicization of art" to describe the efforts of avant-garde artists who opposed the "aestheticization of politics" by fascism. The cultural centers of the United States succeeded in picking up on the impetus of activist art practices. This study examines the characteristic differences between the art worlds on both sides of the Atlantic, which arose as a result of historical developments and continue to exist to this day.

Arms control is eroding amid a rapidly changing and increasingly uncertain security environment. In addition to a spate of treaty withdrawals and demises that have occurred since 2002, major powers are militarizing space, and private actors are developing technologies at lightning speed. Thus, there is an urgent need for arms control agreements that incorporate multiple actors and weapons to mitigate uncertainty; yet, conditions of increasing uncertainty make reaching such agreements extremely challenging, if nearly impossible. This is what Amy J. Nelson calls the arms control paradox.

Drawing on years of research and policy experience, Nelson explores why traditional arms control strategies often fall short in today's security environment. Most past agreements were built on assumptions of transparency, reciprocity, and predictability that no longer hold in a multipolar world shaped by advanced technologies and strategic opacity. By focusing narrowly on eliminating known dangers through rigid verification and technical controls, arms control has inadvertently neglected uncertainty management-the ability to acclimate to the unknown. This book proposes an adaptive approach: one that focuses on managing ambiguity rather than eliminating it and reflects how real-world decisions unfold under pressure. The Arms Control Paradox provides valuable insights and policy-relevant guidelines for twenty-first-century arms control.

A Critical Archaeology of Politics takes the reader on a journey across various ancient worlds to examine how to reconstruct their politics in a more coherent, imaginative, and accurate way. Drawing on non-Western epistemologies, relational ontologies, and ancient texts, this book attempts to eliminate our present concerns to recognize the often surprising power dynamics that shaped ancient politics. From Neolithic Tuerkiye, the Archaic Mississippi, to Medieval Western Europe and the Maya world, the reader engages with the gods of Land, magical politics, and travelling princes to explore how ancient politicians may have conceived of their world in ways which dramatically differ from our own. By surveying both the promises and pitfalls of anthropological archaeology, students, scholars, and the general public alike learn how to deconstruct their present to better reconstruct political pasts.

Most leading global militaries, led by the United States, embrace military assistance as an essential tool for achieving their high-priority strategic objectives; yet, in spite of its prominence, military assistance activities are poorly informed by coherent strategy, nor are they rooted in underlying theoretical frameworks that help strategists understand and exploit causal mechanisms that can produce desired behaviors and outcomes. As a result, military assistance has struggled to consistently deliver positive, enduring results - and in some cases has proven strategically catastrophic. This book fills a gap in both academic literature and real-world practice: it identifies and elucidates several theoretical foundations of military assistance and offers four distinct strategic frameworks for designing military assistance initiatives. In so doing, the book will offer academics tools to better understand and evaluate military assistance and will offer practitioners a playbook for designing more effective military assistance interventions to address high-stakes global security dilemmas. Finally, it will propose an ethical framework for defense cooperation, offering much-needed guidance in an area fraught with moral risk.

What explains the varying ideological profiles of social democratic parties in contemporary Western Europe? And why have some still accepted austerity after the Great Recession? This book argues that the answer lies primarily in structural conditions: the context-specific configurations of external constraints - economic globalisation, regional economic integration in the Eurozone, and sovereign debt - that shape the political room available to social democrats when defining their electoral programmes. Drawing on empirical evidence from 20 Western European countries between 1990 and 2019, and combining cross-national quantitative analysis with in-depth qualitative evidence on party rhetoric, the book develops and rigorously probes a configurational structural explanation for ideological differences within the social democratic party family. The findings carry urgent implications: where external constraints are most pressing, genuine ideological renewal may be structurally precluded. A must-read for scholars and practitioners concerned with the future of centre-left politics and the state of representative democracy.

This open access book offers the first thorough analysis of the role of civil defense in NATO security discourse and development over the years, pinpointing critical junctures and historical events. Its novel contribution is the analysis of NATO's adoption and implementation of resilience as policy, a strategic concept, and later as a new body, the resilience committee. It explores how resilience shapes the role of civil defense and becomes a natural part of national defense and international security, and provides new insights into the knowledge of this contested concept and its adaptability once it enters a security discourse.

In terms of policy implications, one of the book's key contributions is its careful examination of the intricate roles ascribed by civil administration, civil society, market actors, and the broader populace. By explicitly addressing the social and political dynamics that have shaped NATO both historically and in the present day, it aims to ignite vital conversations around the implications of military alliances on democracy, accountability, and their influence over the internal political affairs of member states. This sheds light on the interconnectedness of these elements and encourages readers to critically reflect on the power structures at play and their far-reaching effects.

This edited book, part of a two-volume set, explores the shifting dynamics of global politics through a geoeconomic lens. As economic instruments increasingly influence international power dynamics, this volume examines the evolving strategies of states, the changing role of international organisations, and the transformation of transnational economic structures.

It re-evaluates how economic tools are now central to global competition and cooperation. In an era marked by strategic rivalry, particularly between US-China, and increasing fragmentation of global governance, the volume assesses how economic leverage is deployed to pursue geopolitical objectives.

Organised in three parts, the book begins with the evolution of global economic and financial institutions, followed by regional case studies that illustrate specific geoeconomic strategies. The final section addresses contemporary global challenges, including technological shifts and environmental crises, offering projections and policy recommendations.

The volume presents global perspectives from a diverse group of contributors, featuring empirical insights and case studies to connect theory with practice. It is accessible to a wide readership and relevant across multiple disciplines, including international relations, economics, and political science.

This book is intended for academics, students, policymakers, and general readers seeking to understand how economic tools are reshaping global governance and power relations.
