米国国務省は在外公館からの報告書などを通じて外交関係のある各国の様々な情報を入手し、対外政策に活用する一次資料としてきました。Scholarly Resources刊行のマイクロフィルムRecords of the Department of State Relating to Political Relations between the United States and Japanでは、米国国務省の1930年から1959年までの文書のうち、十進分類番号が711.94（1930年から1949年まで）と611.94（1950年から1959年まで）の日米政治関係資料を収録しております。Archives Unboundでは、米国国務省セントラルファイルに収録される1930年から1949年までの日米の政治関係についての資料をデジタル化して提供いたします。
1945年夏の終戦後、政治的および社会的改革に専念する連合国による占領政策は、1946年に新憲法の日本国憲法公布など、非常に短い期間で日本という国の仕組みを徹底的に変革させました。当時の米国と日本の政治関係に関する米国国務省の記録をデジタル化しております。
