Schneider, Florian, Studying Political Communication and Media in East Asia: A Playful Textbook. 452 pp. 2025:4 (Amsterdam U. Pr., NE) <745-628>
ISBN 978-90-485-6445-3 paper ¥21,105.- (税込) GB£ 74.95

Communication is at the heart of politics, and certainly in East Asia, where vibrant media systems and cultural industries connect with political processes that range from the democratic to autocratic. If we are to understand East Asian societies, and 21st-century politics more broadly, we need to take media and communication seriously. This textbook provides a flexible toolbox of methods and theories for studying political communication. Taking its examples and exercises from Japan, Korea, and the Chinese-speaking world, it walks readers through core issues, media contents, and communicative modes. Readers will learn how to systematically analyse the politics of media environments, written and spoken words, images and visual designs, moving image, space and spatial interactions, (video)games, and more. The chapters can be used individually or, optionally, as a playful 'gamified' course that offers learners a first-hand experience of how complex 'information societies' incentivise behaviour.

非同盟の世界
Heine, Jorge / Fortin, Carlos / Ominami, Carlos, The Non-Aligned World: Striking Out in an Era of Great Power Competition. 220 pp. 2025:4 (Polity Pr., UK) <745-673>
ISBN 978-1-5095-6434-7 hard ¥13,931.- (税込) US$ 64.95
ISBN 978-1-5095-6435-4 paper ¥4,922.- (税込) US$ 22.95

Non-Alignment is back with a vengeance. In recent years, the number of countries embracing this venerable approach to foreign policy has increased exponentially, making it a force to be reckoned with in world affairs. The war in Ukraine, the expansion of the BRICS group, and the conflict in Gaza have given a special impetus to its rise in a new form: Active Non-Alignment (ANA). This has gone hand-in-hand with the growing power and influence of the Global South in world politics. In this agenda-setting book, Jorge Heine, Carlos Fortin and Carlos Ominami, explain the origins, dynamics and significance of ANA, for the future of world order. Far from a transitory expression of the current state of affairs, they argue that ANA is here to stay. It provides a powerful guide to action and a fine-tuned compass for the Global Majority, that is, the countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America, to strike out and prioritize their national interests, whilst navigating the perilous waters of a troubled world in the throes of change.

ISBN 978-3-031-83036-5 hard ¥37,132.- (税込) EUR 159.99

Some climate change events that are presently plaguing these locations are extreme weather events such as flooding, food insecurity, disasters and droughts. The book provides case studies and interventions that can be a source to others who are seeking to find solutions to these adverse climate change events.

ISBN 978-981-9623-35-8 hard ¥53,379.- (税込) EUR 229.99

前近代ユーラシアにおける嘆願と権力関係
Zaret, David, Petitioning and Power Relations in Pre-Modern Eurasia. (The Past and Present Book Series) 176 pp. 2025:8 (Oxford U. Pr., UK) <745-719>
ISBN 978-0-19-895573-3 hard ¥23,654.- (税込) GB£ 84.00

Petitioning was the main route by which the agency of subjects engaged the authority of rulers. Most studies explore it as a practice for sending requests to central and local representatives of state power in empires, kingdoms, and city-states. Yet the practice occurs in other fields of power, for example, in medieval papal governance, seigneurial regimes and other types of lordship, e.g., queenship. Petition-and-response was the inverse twin to command-and-obey, and just as inherent and indispensable for managing pre-modern power relations. Requests by petitioners were endlessly diverse. Petitions were the universal request form for subjects who sought assistance with every conceivable problem or opportunity. In addition to resolving conflicts with other subjects or officials, there were requests for appointments, promotions to higher positions or social ranks, exemptions, pardons, privileges, pensions, salary increases, charitable relief, and more. Some petitioners were docile and ingenuous; others were ingenious, even predatory petitioners whose initiatives reveal high levels of agency. This is the first truly comparative analysis of pre-modern petitioning across Eurasia. Across a wide range of historical case studies and cutting against the grain of the dominant, one-dimensional social science perspective on pre-modern power relations, David Zaret shows petitioning in pre-modern Eurasia to have been a dynamic tool of state, and not (as is often assumed) merely an instrument of protest or imitation of religious prayer. Comparative study shows the practice to have been remarkably uniform, and one whose ubiquity and prominence are astounding for its diverse socio-cultural contexts: there are Sumerian, Akkadian, and Aramaic petitions in ancient Mesopotamia, demotic petitions in Egypt when Pharaohs ruled, then Greek ones after imposition of Ptolemaic rule. Other contexts for the practice include Zoroastrian Persia, Hellenic and Roman cultures of benefaction, Christianity, Islam, Daoism, Confucianism, and the syncretic mix of Shinto and Buddhism in Japan. In so doing, Zaret bridges literatures of two fields and makes important contributions to both - historical research on petitioning, which is often confined to case studies, and theories of power relations, arguably the most heavily plowed field in social theory - to offer revisionist perspectives on the fluid nature of power and politics in the pre-modern world.

Gaitanidis, Ioannis et al. (eds.), Therapy, Spirituality, and East Asian Imaginaries. (Health, Medicine, and Science in Asia) 302 pp. 2025:2 (Amsterdam U. Pr., NE) <745-102>
ISBN 978-90-485-5901-5 hard ¥34,355.- (税込) GB£ 122.00

In the context of modern global exchanges, an imagined and essentialised notion of 'East Asia' has served as both a source of inspiration and a catalyst for new connections, extending beyond the geographic boundaries of China, Japan, and Korea. This volume explores the global circulation of practices, technologies, and ideas identified as 'East Asian' in alternative therapies and spiritual practices since the 1970s. Case studies range from the incorporation of traditional Chinese medicine into Brazilian naturopathy to self-development seminars promoting Korean national identity. Rather than focusing on questions of authenticity, the book uniquely interrogates how and why the cultures of China, Japan, and Korea have been invoked over the last fifty years to promote specific therapeutic, spiritual, and political agendas worldwide.
