How to Suppress the Careers of Female Social Scientists. Volume 1: A Feminist Ethnographic Anti-manual from Chile. 307 pp. 2025:5 (Springer, GW) <745-808>
ISBN 978-3-031-84131-6 hard ¥32,490.- (税込) EUR 139.99
This book is the first of a series of five volumes that analyze and denounce the gender inequalities and violence faced by Latin American female social scientists in academic settings. The five volumes will present and discuss the results of an ethnographic research project conducted in four countries - Argentina, Brazil, Chile, and Mexico - to analyze gender inequalities experienced by Latin American women in five dimensions of academic life: undergraduate education, graduate education, labor insertion, professional performance in stable positions, and gender violence faced at work. This first volume narrates the creation of the research project, from the formulation of its methodological strategy to the application and analysis of its first case study in Chile. It presents the theoretical-methodological perspective adopted in the whole project - a feminist ethnography that draws on the intersubjective role of female experiences to denounce situations of power inequality - and analyses the testimonies of 50 female academics working in 12 universities in nine cities of Chile. The title of the five-volume set, How to Suppress the Careers of Female Social Scientists, pays homage to the seminal work of Joanna Russ about gender inequalities faced by female writers, How to Suppress Women's Writing, and this first volume is both a "manual" and an "anti-manual". On the one hand, the first two parts of the book serve as a "manual" that situates the Chilean case, clarifies the methodological construction of the research project and discusses the limitations and possibilities of feminist methodologies in the social sciences. On the other hand, the third and fourth parts of the book are ironically presented as an "anti-manual" that explain how the careers of female social scientists are destroyed by intersectional gender-based inequalities and violence, even in social contexts that are open to equity policies.

Media's Investments in Untruths: Gender in Business Fraud Stories. 80 pp. 2025:4 (Palgrave Macmillan, UK) <745-917>
ISBN 978-3-031-85279-4 hard ¥8,120.- (税込) EUR 34.99
This book examines the gendered nature of business fraud by examining media representations of four entrepreneurs (Sam Bankman-Fried, Elizabeth Holmes, Bernie Madoff, and Anna Sorokin) who swindled money from wealthy investors and everyday people. From a feminist political economic perspective, the book asks how the intersections between gender, age, socioeconomic background, and the country of origin matter in media portrayals. By examining fictionalized television shows, films, and news reports about the four fraudsters, the book considers: what kinds of "truth" do media texts unveil through story narrative, character development, and mise-en-scene? How were financial crimes seen to disrupt an orderly and rational market? How were fraudsters redeemed or not in media texts? This book will interest media studies scholars who examine gender, finance, and economics.

African Women's Histories in European Narratives: The Afropolitan Krio Fernandino Diaspora (1850-1996). 280 pp. 2025:6 (Leuven U. Pr., BE) <745-931>
ISBN 978-94-6270-461-9 paper ¥11,992.- (税込) EUR 39.50
The Krio Fernandino women, pioneers of Europe's African diaspora in the 19th Century.Little is known about the African women who came to Europe from the 1870s onwards, nor do we dare to imagine them as wealthy, elegantly dressed individuals with refined tastes and fluent in several languages. The Krio Fernandino represented a multisited, multilocal, transnational, transcontinental and Afropolitan community that lived between Africa and Europe from the late 19th century onwards. This book explains how the Krio Fernandino, and particularly their women, transcended the barriers of race and gender in colonial Africa and in Spain. Aixela-Cabre highlights a fascinating journey across cultures and continents, unearthing a compelling narrative of African women's empowerment in their home continent and in Catalonia. This research highlights a women's history that resonates on regional, national and transcontinental levels; a genuine Euro-African and Afro-European legacy to be preserved for future generations. This book will be made open access within three years of publication thanks to Path to Open, a program developed in partnership between JSTOR, the American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS), University of Michigan Press, and The University of North Carolina Press to bring about equitable access and impact for the entire scholarly community, including authors, researchers, libraries, and university presses around the world. Community Health Practitioners and Child Sexual Abuse in the Family, 1970s-2010s. (Genders and Sexualities in History) 294 pp. 2025:4 (Palgrave Macmillan, UK) <745-950>
ISBN 978-3-031-80051-1 hard ¥11,601.- (税込) EUR 49.99
This open access book is an innovative history of community health practitioners' responses to the seemingly intractable problem of men (and on rare occasions, women) sexually abusing children within the private family home. It is situated within a social history of the development of British community-based health professions in the last decades of the twentieth century. Drawing on archival research and newly gathered in-depth oral history interviews, the monograph argues that expectations placed upon community-based doctors, nurses and mental health staff since the 1980s in relation to predicting and preventing the sexual abuse of children by men they know are incongruous. Beneath a surface acquiescence to the need to protect children from such abuse or to intervene early lie cultural, social and structural barriers that prevent its fulfilment. The book is a first in specifically interrogating the recent history of the role of community health practitioners within the modern 'child protection workforce', and contributes to growing scholarship on the history of emotions in the medical professions.

Urban Women: Life, Love, and Work in the Medieval Low Countries. 232 pp. 2025:6 (Leuven U. Pr., BE) <745-958>

Exploring women's stories of work, protest, and power in the medieval Low CountriesThe Middle Ages-a time often cast as a dark period when violence reigned and men dominated society. Women, as the deeply rooted cliche would have it, played scarcely any part. But this book tells a different story, one in which women step forward as the main characters. In the southern Low Countries, townswomen held substantial rights, which they used to conduct business, voice their opinions, and assert their will.Urban Women presents a different and lesser-known image of the late Middle Ages, from 1250 to 1550. The authors trace the lives of women protesting, marrying, making love, working, and engaging in the daily life of Low Countries towns. In doing so, this book gives voice to wealthy businesswomen, laborers, religious women, criminals, and sex workers, spotlighting the remarkable figures who shaped a "women's town" within a man's world.

Kazyulina, Regina,
Women Under Suspicion: Fraternization, Espionage, and Punishment in the Soviet Union During World War II. 208 pp. 2025:6 (U. Wisconsin Pr., US) <745-962>
ISBN 978-0-299-35250-9 hard ¥19,294.- (税込) US$ 89.95
For two years during World War II, Nazi forces occupied large swaths of the western Soviet Union. In response to devastating losses on a contested front, Stalin first permitted and then encouraged women to join the Red Army and the resistance. Simultaneously, female civilians in occupied territory found themselves in an untenable position: they could resist the occupiers and face the possibly fatal consequences or engage in sexual barter, with all the risk, shame, and disapprobation that entailed. In Women Under Suspicion, Regina Kazyulina probes these "choiceless choices" with sensitivity and nuance. Officially, women in the Soviet Union enjoyed a degree of equality unknown elsewhere in Allied countries at the time. However, long-standing norms of gendered behavior and stereotypes that cast women as morally weak, politically fallible, and sexually tempting meant that women in the army or living behind enemy lines were viewed with skepticism, seen as weak points easily exploited by the enemy. Concerned about sabotage, espionage, and ideological corruption, authorities categorized women who fraternized with the enemy-or who were suspected of doing so-as "socially dangerous," a uniquely Soviet legal designation that exposed the accused to prosecution, imprisonment, and exile. Even without official oversight, women rumored to be involved with German occupiers were reviled, and treated accordingly, by their neighbors. By reading official reports against the grain and incorporating rare personal documents, Kazyulina provides a multifaceted study of the realities for non-Jewish Soviet women-in the army or resistance, or at home in occupied territories-during and after Nazi occupation.

Gendered Practices of Rulership at the Court of Wuerttemberg, 1568-1634. (Studies in German History) 272 pp. 2025:9 (Oxford U. Pr., UK) <745-967>
ISBN 978-0-19-895739-3 hard ¥27,878.- (税込) GB£ 99.00
Gender history has alerted us to the fact that it is misleading to assume transhistorical features when it comes to issues such as childbearing, mother- and fatherhood, and gendered systems of labour division. Instead, all of these are culturally inflected and thus variable across time. Gendered Practices of Rulership at the Court of Wuerttemberg, 1568-1634 explores the ways in which socially constructed differences between men and women supported the dynastic practice of power in the early modern duchy of Wuerttemberg. The book investigates three generations of the Wuerttemberg ducal family from the late sixteenth to the first half of the seventeenth century. In five chapters, five gendered practices are examined. They include the gendering of courtly space, of high ceremonial events, and of dynastic marriage and concubinage, as well as the gendering of kinship practices. The history of the Wuerttemberg dynasty in this period, allows for the observation of a range of approaches to the practice of power. It is documented by rich archival sources - many of which are analysed here for the first time - and thus provides opportunities for comparison between different ruling couples. Duke Friedrich I rarely saw eye to eye with his wife Duchess Sibylla von Anhalt (r. 1593-1608), and he engaged in numerous extramarital affairs, even seeking to institutionalise concubinage. This couple's son Duke Johann Friedrich enjoyed a much more harmonious relationship with his wife Duchess Barbara Sophia von Brandenburg (r. 1608-1628), with the couple amicably sharing many tasks of rulership. The book, however, does not merely seek to show how individual men, women, and couples engaged in dynastic rulership through gendered relationships. Instead, it also seeks to identify the types of gendered work the dynastic system relied on in order to remain functional over a long period of time. To do so, examples of failed relationships are at least as useful as those of marriages built on common understanding. As a result of this methodological shift, aspects of life at court emerge that have previously escaped in-depth discussion; for instance, the emotionally cohesive effects of gendered court topography, as well as the crucial emotion work dynastic women were expected to perform in their marital relationships, and which had wide-reaching political consequences.

Following our desires, sharing pleasure: sounds easy, right? And yet our sexualities are conditioned by expectations, prejudices and taboos that make it difficult to listen to our own bodies, let alone anyone else's. Bel Olid clears away the taboos and invites readers to explore pathways to more connected sexualities and more pleasurable relationships. Because perhaps the first thing we need to learn about sex is to unlearn. Unlearn the desire we've been taught we must feel, unlearn the shame. Forget the bodies that we've been obliged to like, forget the behaviour presented as the only type possible. And then, with fresh eyes, look deep inside and ask ourselves what we want, what we like, what we feel like discovering. Listening to our desire, and listening to the other person too. Daring ourselves to doubt, explore, make mistakes, stop at any time. Let's step into the ocean of possibilities.

Feminism has been defeated.Once a politics, feminism is now a philosophy, an epistemology, a method. Once for women, it is now for everyone. Once in pursuit of liberation, it now seeks only inclusion. In Feminism, Defeated, Kate Phelan traces the depoliticization and ultimately, the defeat of feminism. She recovers the second-wave view of men and women as sex-classes, enemies, political kinds, a view more radical than the contemporary view of men and women as social constructs. She also describes how poststructuralism displaced this view and replaced it with another. In this view, the sex/gender binary constructs men and women, and excludes the gender nonconforming. As this view replaced the second-wave one, the injustice of men's oppression of women was replaced by that of exclusion, and the goal of women's liberation was replaced by that of inclusion. Thus did feminism become the trans-inclusionary movement as which we now know it, and Phelan shows that this shift was not the progression of feminism; it was the betrayal of it. In this highly original and persuasive study, she argues that the recent emergence of a new gender-critical feminism presents a moment of opportunity to reclaim feminism's political project.

While transgender lives are at the forefront of contemporary politics, what do we really understand about the complexity of trans experience? Trans people who go through various aspects of gender transition experience shifts not only in their gender, but also with regards to other categories of identity such as race, social class, sexuality, disability, and more. Centering the stories of trans people and their loved ones, Sojka and de Vries investigate how intersectionality operates at various levels of social meaning - the individual, the interpersonal, and the structural - in the experiences of transgender people. Collectively, they present an argument about why gendered and racialized processes, in intersection, are central to understanding trans lives.

Transgender Rights vs. Women's Rights: From Conflicts to Co-Existence. 228 pp. 2025:5 (Polity Pr., UK) <745-977>

"Trans rights are human rights!" "Women's rights are human rights!" Yes, but the human rights of two groups often conflict. The only way to resolve these conflicts is through calm, rational, public debate. Freedom of expression protects the right of women to question certain demands by trans rights activists, even if this might offend. Raising conflicts between transgender rights and women's rights is not "transphobic", because disagreement is not hatred. The concept of "transphobia" should be defined narrowly as statements or acts indicating hostility or prejudice towards transgender persons. If the right to speak about conflicts is protected, and we start by acknowledging the broad areas of agreement about the human rights of transgender people, we can turn to the substance of these conflicts.Should it be possible for an individual to change their legal sex? If so, how easy should it be? Should it be changeable only after a diagnosis of gender dysphoria and a waiting period? Or should it be sufficient to "self-identify" as a person of the opposite sex? Or should sex be removed from birth certificates, so that there is nothing to change? Robert Wintemute carefully examines these conflicts, considers the differences between transgender rights and lesbian, gay and bisexual (LGB) rights, and proposes ways to achieve co-existence between transgender rights and women's and children's rights.

Hughes, Claretha,
Women's Career Development in Virtual Remote Work Environments: Models, Theories, and Frameworks. 156 pp. 2025:5 (Palgrave Macmillan, UK) <745-307>
ISBN 978-3-031-85393-7 hard ¥34,811.- (税込) EUR 149.99
This book examines the challenges and opportunities that women face with their career development aspirations while participating in virtual remote (VR) work. The historical workplace disparities experienced by women, such as pay gaps and underrepresentation in leadership, have been exacerbated by the pandemic. Already penalized for motherhood, the ability to work virtually and remotely offered an opportunity to democratize the workplace, giving women greater flexibility in managing their non-work responsibilities while fulfilling their work obligation. Nevertheless, VR work also has a tendency to make women more invisible and, therefore, less likely to have networking opportunities and more likely to be overlooked for promotions. The author explores these challenges and opportunities faced by women in the era of VR work and addresses some human resource development (HRD) issues that contribute to the talent retention of VR women workers and offers models, theories, and frameworks to examine the challenges and opportunities women encounter in VR work environments. This book will appeal to HR scholar and scholar practitioners interested in the ongoing hurdles confronting women in the professional sphere, despite the new opportunities presented through VR work. It also appeals to gender studies scholars who are interested in VR work's effect on women.

Human Trafficking and Sexual Exploitation around the World: Law, Ideology, and the Experiences of Sex Workers and Clients. 298 pp. 2025:4 (Amsterdam U. Pr., NE) <745-488>
ISBN 978-90-485-6073-8 hard ¥34,355.- (税込) GB£ 122.00
Sex work is often called the oldest profession in the world. It manifests itself in a plethora of forms. A move to private locations is now taking place: contacts are established via the Internet and meetings take place at appointed places. This makes it more difficult to monitor forced work, and exploitation therefore risks remaining undetected. This book presents empirical findings regarding exploitation in various countries, considering sex workers, traffickers and clients, and the fight against human trafficking. Countries differ vastly in their legislative approaches, ranging from highly repressive to very liberal. This volume asks whether the ongoing process of making and changing laws is sufficiently effective in fighting human trafficking. Other interventions could obtain better outcomes, such as promoting more independence among women and helping trafficked individuals to get out. Less ideology and more attention to the facts of exploitation and sex work might help to achieve these aims.

Famous as the author of A Vindication of the Rights of Woman, Mary Wollstonecraft was a wide-ranging and controversial moral and political philosopher. She engaged with many of the most polarising issues of her day: criticising social hierarchies, advocating for educational reform, analysing the French Revolution, and challenging men's political dominance. In this illuminating introduction, Alan Coffee argues that the originality of Wollstonecraft's feminist arguments is best understood within the context of a systematic and comprehensive philosophical system built up from a set of 'simple' theological and moral principles. An effective way to approach this is through the concept of freedom as independence. Drawing on all of Wollstonecraft's works, including her novels, reviews and letters, Coffee shows how the ideal of independence illuminates and unites many of her intellectual preoccupations and her contribution to contemporary debates, such as on the structural nature of social injustice and the republican notion of freedom as non-domination. This gripping account of Wollstonecraft's work sheds new light on one of the most important eighteenth-century thinkers.

Prevention Science & Targeted Methods for HIV/STI Research with Black Sexual Minority Men. 174 pp. 2025:4 (Springer, GW) <745-237>
ISBN 978-3-031-85129-2 hard ¥23,206.- (税込) EUR 99.99
Despite substantial advances in HIV/STI treatment and prevention for general population health, sexual health disparities persist for Black gay, bisexual, and other Black sexual minority men (SMM). Strategies to build trust and overcome barriers are not well-established and solutions remain elusive. The contemporary prevention science landscape also requires updated perspectives in light of changing social policies, technological advancements, and prevention options. This book is the first to provide a comprehensive overview for sexual health prevention science using years of significant research from Dangerfield II et al. involving U.S. Black SMM in light of existing studies. This book identifies knowledge and practice gaps and proposes recommendations for innovative methods for academic collaboration with communities of practice. Researchers, clinicians, and public health practitioners will be guided through the sexual health research and intervention process using targeted contemporary studies to enhance their practice. This book serves as a valuable resource for enhancing the skills of emerging prevention scientists and clinicians. It also offers innovative strategies for experienced prevention experts to refine techniques and address persistent health disparities in sexual health outcomes. The book targets audiences across disciplines, including public health, sociology, psychology, nursing, medicine, anthropology, and population science and can be applied to marginalized communities globally. By bridging research, practice, and innovation, this book serves as a transformative resource for addressing sexual health disparities and empowering collaborative solutions to advance equity in the U.S. and around the globe.

This book illuminates the largely neglected contribution of unpaid, primarily female household labour to economic production and living standards in Japan from the early modern period to the eve of World War Two. The difficulties involved in measuring time devoted to housework and other forms of household labour in the past have meant that most attempts to assess the process of industrialisation have failed to recognise the ways in which such labour is essential to the sustainability and welfare of the population. In this context, Japan presents a significant example of a historical case of industrialisation occurring within an economy that continued to be dominated by the institution of the household. This short study argues that this must have led to a particularly significant underestimation of Japanese living standards in the past, with implications for comparative and global analysis, and to neglect of the key role of women in the historical economy. Providing a nuanced yet concise analysis, this book will be valuable reading for scholars of economic history and feminist economics, as well as introducing important comparative angles for researchers in Japanese studies and gender studies more widely.
