This edited volume explores the evolution of Korean political economy from a comparative and historical perspective. Exploring what the Korean model of its political economic evolution means in the context of theoretical debate on the political-economic development, this book compares characteristics of Korean political economy model not only from the Western models but more importantly from other East-Asian countries including Japan and Taiwan. Our project examines not only the recent performance of Korean political economy in terms of its technology strategies in the firm-level and Korean chaebols' transformation and adaptation but also traces historically the evolution of Korean political, social and economic system. This study will offer thought provoking insights to scholars of Korean society.

Using translated Indian newspapers and reports on the Indian press created by British civil servants, this book investigates why World War One was a watershed moment in the history of British colonial rule in India, and South Asia more generally.
This rich and under-utilised archive of newspapers demonstrates that India was awash with commentary about World War One from the moment Britain declared war with Germany in 1914, and charts the gradual change in attitude towards the conflict itself, as well as India's future relationship with Britain, amongst contemporary readers and writers. While established scholarship considers the fact that World War One spelt the end for the British Empire and India's position within it as an established truth, this book uses newspapers and civil servant reports to ask why, and how this came to be.
Offering a detailed reading of archival sources, this book links India's path to independence with reports of heavy Indian casualties in the Middle East, stalemate on the Western Front, and demands for increased autonomy in Britain's other colonies. It also answers important questions; what was it like trying to follow the war's events in wartime India? What developments mattered to Indian newspaper editors and their readers? What debates did the war engender? What did people in India do with the news they consumed? In doing so, it recovers marginalised voices within histories of World War One, helping to decentre a euro-centric approach and build a clearer picture of experiences of this conflict across the Empire.

Deep Timetable is a Nyungar history of Western Australia's rail network. The phrase 'deep timetable' refers to a precolonial communications network of bidi (tracks) and kaleeps (camping places, water sources) that formed the basis of infrastructural colonisation. It alludes to two profoundly different understandings of how places are connected and people related.
Information for the project came from documentary sources, notably employment records kept in the Western Australian Government Railways' archives, but most importantly from over fifty 'Nyungar-on-Nyungar' yarning sessions. In a departure from conventional ethnographic method, participating Elders determined which memory tracks and railway places were visited.
Deep Timetable captures the profoundly ambiguous impact of the spreading rail network on Aboriginal life. Contributing Elders emphasised the positive role rail played in empoyment, housing - and limited escape from Native Welfare surveillance. At the same time, post-1905 government policies of racial segregation, family break-up and child removal, depended critically on the existence of convenient transportation: better connections often meant easier separation.
As a narrative method, yarning re-enacts memory as a journey in the present.Destinations and distances are secondary, what counts is relating, in both senses. Talking about the rail network like this turns it into a network of family survival. Weaving continuities of consciousness between one generation and the next, it shows how a beleaguered community repeatedly found ways to make the system work for them.

This edited volume investigates the shaping, suppression, and circulation of medical and pharmaceutical knowledge in colonial Goa, situating these processes within the region's political, religious, and commercial networks. Spanning from the sixteenth to the early twentieth century, the chapters trace developments from Garcia de Orta's engagement with local plant-based knowledge to the compilation of herbaria used as medical vademecums across Jesuit global networks. The collection also explores the hybrid medical practices in eighteenth century Goan hospitals, the institutionalisation of medical education, and the contested legitimacy of healing practices during epidemics such as smallpox, plague, and cholera in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Rather than framing colonial medicine as a binary between European and Asian systems under a sanitary regime, the contributors draw on earlier historical layers to illuminate the complexities of medical knowledge production in Goa.

This book examines one of the deepest paradoxes of Colombia's transition: how a peace agreement and its most innovative institution, the Special Jurisdiction for Peace (SJP), came to divide the nation so profoundly, even as international institutions and experts hailed it as a pioneering model of transitional justice. Part 1 provides historical context for Colombia's long search for peace, the creation of the SJP, and explains why it generated fear, anger, and political backlash across broad sectors of society. Part 2 centres on the nearly 9 million victims who have borne the gravest consequences of the conflict, through an in-depth analysis of two major SJP macro-cases involving all principal conflict actors. Part 3 examines both the transformative power and the jurisdictional limits of the SJP, especially its uneven capacity to reach the full range of actors implicated in the conflict. The book ultimately asks whether the SJP's attempt to construct a comprehensive judicial truth can do more than illuminate the past: can it also help narrow the moral and political divide between victims and sectors of the elites that benefited, directly or indirectly, from the conflict? Drawing on extensive fieldwork, interviews, primary sources, media, social media, local knowledge, and first-hand observation, this book offers a critical and original account of the SJP as one of the most ambitious efforts anywhere to reinvent justice after mass atrocity.

I Did It for My Country is a revelatory account of Sirhan and the political dimensions of the assassination of Robert F. Kennedy. It illuminates Sirhan's Palestinian background, war-torn childhood, and experience of displacement, considering to what extent trauma contributed to his mental health problems. Michael R. Fischbach uncovers how prominent actors-from the United States and Middle Eastern governments to Jewish and Arab American groups-deliberately depoliticized the assassination by downplaying Sirhan's grievances about American support for Israel. He also examines why US authorities investigated possible Arab co-conspirators and explores how Palestinians understood Sirhan's action, as well as how Sirhan has maintained his Palestinian nationalism during his decades in prison. Drawing on in-depth archival research-including FBI and CIA documents-this book pinpoints a missed opportunity to consider how US foreign policy could affect domestic security.

Christiana Parreira explores the tension between central and local authority in post-civil war Lebanon, drawing on years of fieldwork, more than 140 interviews, and original survey research. She traces the formation of a party cartel system that maintains control at the national level by inhibiting opposition at the local level, intervening in municipal politics to reward loyalty and punish opposition. Central state elites use their control over resource distribution to obtain monopolies on local political power, preventing local governments from acting independently. Challenging prevailing framings of local governments as guardians of democratic accountability, The Art of Not Governing sheds new light on why recently democratized states fail to represent the interests of their citizens.

This book offers a uniquely comprehensive and comparative analysis of the War on Terror through the lens of Arab media-a perspective that remains significantly underrepresented in current scholarship. By focusing on two influential but ideologically divergent media blocs-Al Jazeera Arabic and the grouping of Al Arabiya with state-aligned Egyptian outlets-the book provides critical insights into how media narratives are shaped by political alignment, ownership, and regional rivalries.
What makes this book distinctive is its integration of media analysis with geopolitical inquiry. The book not only decodes the frames and discourses used to portray terrorism and counterterrorism but also contextualizes these within broader power struggles in the Arab world, including the Qatar-Saudi/Egyptian axis and their ties to U.S. policy. It bridges disciplines by combining the analytical tools of media studies with the political frameworks of international relations and security studies. It will appeal to all those interested in political science, media studies, Middle East politics, international relations, and journalism.

After several decades of unprecedented growth that turned China into the world's second largest economy, today China is facing major economic challenges, exacerbated by rising tariffs imposed by its most important export market, the United States. How can we explain the extraordinary rise and sudden faltering of China's economic miracle?
Kent Deng takes a long-term view, charting the development of China's economy from the nineteenth century to the present day. He shows that the policies implemented during Mao's rule from the 1950s to the 1970s led to a growth cul-de-sac with major economic disincentives and mass poverty. This forced Mao's successor, Deng Xiaoping, to reform and open up China's economy with a view to unleashing the economic power of the market. The new model developed by Deng Xiaoping combined state-led import dependency with exports in order to catch up with the West, and success in achieving exports depended on a unique combination of cheap labour, cheap land and low environmental protection which, taken together, gave China an absolute advantage in the global market, enabling it to produce goods very cheaply and export them to Western countries where the costs were much higher. But Deng's economic model is now facing increasing resistance from those countries on which China has relied for its export growth. Since 2010, two doors have been closing on China: the door for goods heading for China (vital for China's modernization) and the door for goods coming from China (vital for paying for China's imports). This is likely to end China's hitherto uninterrupted 'import-export combo' loop. The 2025 tariff war between United States and China is only the most recent manifestation of this new state of affairs in the global economy.
Given the headwinds China now faces, and given that many low-income countries have now modelled themselves on China and begun to supply the world market with low-priced goods, China would need an economic miracle to bounce back to its pre-2010 growth trajectory.

This book provides an overall introduction to the plea leniency system in China from different perspectives, such as judges, prosecutors, lawyers, and victims. Also, the editors organize the book in accordance with the consequential stages of criminal procedure, including the investigation, prosecution, trial and appeal. This book gives a brief introduction to the latest developments of China's criminal justice reform, as well as an in-depth analysis of two core subjects of the entire criminal justice reform, that is, the trial-centered reform and the plea leniency system. Therefore, this book can provide a popular reading as well as an academic reference for international organizations, institutions and researchers who are interested in the development of criminal justice in China.

This edited book establishes a justice-oriented agenda for understanding and acting on disasters in the world's most hazard-exposed regions. Challenging technocratic and event-centred framings, the volume theorises disasters as historically produced and politically mediated, tracing how colonialism, capitalism, extractivism, and uneven governance create and compound risk. Across four parts-foundations; (re)conceptualising disasters; methods; and critical voices from the field-the chapters develop key ideas such as critical vulnerability, structural/prospective amnesia, and disaster populism; advance plural, decolonising methodologies (including talanoa, autoethnography and co-production of knowledge); and offer grounded cases from Aotearoa New Zealand, Japan, the Philippines, Rapa Nui, Chile, Vietnam and the Pacific. In doing so, Critical Disaster Studies in Asia and the Pacific centres Indigenous and local epistemologies, Gender Equality, Disability, and Social Inclusion (GEDSI)-informed practice, and systems-behaviour models for transformative disaster risk reduction. Bringing together leading and emerging scholars across disciplines, this is an indispensable resource for researchers, practitioners and policymakers seeking to move from managing hazards to transforming the conditions that generate disaster risk.

Larry Au examines how Chinese scientists aspire toward global science as they engage in international collaborations to create shared goals and norms around emerging biomedical technologies. He traces how the concept of precision medicine has taken on a new life in traveling from the United States to China, interacting with national politics and conceptions of health and illness from traditional Chinese medicine. Through the case of precision medicine, Au shows how global and national forms of science cooperate, compete, and come into conflict with one another, producing what he calls hybrid science. In China, hybrid science combines dreams of future scientific ascendancy with nostalgia for the past, such as its interest in modernizing traditional medicine. Yet hybridization can result in illegibility and a lack of recognition, devaluing the work, labor, and ideas of Chinese scientists and exacerbating their exclusion from global science.
Offering new insights into transnational scientific networks and biomedical innovation, this book demonstrates how global science becomes entangled with national forms-and changes in the process.

Approaches the history of the Mughal Empire at the level of human experience, through a diverse group of autobiographical narratives.
Starting from 1526, the Mughals ruled over much of India for three centuries, perhaps the most important Islamic empire in the early modern world. This period saw the production of a fascinating variety of memoirs and autobiographies in which residents of the empire reflected on their own lives, on Islam in a Hindu context, and on the relationship of individual subjects to their new rulers. Those written by Mughal royalty-especially Babur and Jahangir-are well known. This book considers the less well-known writings of diverse others, from the poet laureate Faizi to those who were not part of elite society but a few notches below it, such as the lowly envoy Asad Beg and characters like Mirza Nathan and Abdul Latif, who lived dangerously on the Bengal frontier. Also considered are prolific Hindu writers, such as Bhimsen Saksena and the witty Anand Ram Mukhlis, who lived in Delhi through the turbulent 1730s and 1740s. Together, they offer an original and differently critical perspective on the empire-its religious, social, and political tensions, as well as its strategies for overcoming them.
Covering over two centuries of such materials, Mirrors of Empire is a work of cultural history that is also firmly rooted in social history. It incorporates extensive translations from Persian, including materials that are little-known even to historians and specialists, and shows the transformation of the empire from its difficult emergence, to its expansive height, to its phase of disintegration in the middle of the eighteenth century. Gracefully written, the book approaches the Mughal Empire at the level of human experience, rendering it accessible and not a mere abstraction.

Economic competition between the United States and China has been a defining issue of the twenty-first century. But after years of rapid growth, China's economy has faltered. How did its long-term economic outlook change so quickly? And can Beijing change course and preserve China's political ambition for global economic primacy?
In Broken China, Logan Wright offers an unflinching account of how China's economy hit the wall. Drawing on extensive experience analyzing the Chinese financial sector on the ground, he argues that China's economic slowdown is rooted in its financial system, and an unprecedented credit expansion finally coming to an end. Opposing the prevailing myth that its leaders think and plan many years ahead, this book posits that there was no long-term plan that included the credit boom and bust that now constrains Beijing's options. Rather than crisis or collapse, Wright argues, China is suffering from a decay of its economic policy tools. As its domestic and foreign sectors face increasing pressure, the last thing Beijing needs is global pushback against Chinese exports. With no clear path to recovery, China's economy is broken, the consequences of which will reverberate around the world.

Examining the African Diaspora in Africology, this book explores the fundamental issues involving the dispersion of Africans from antiquity to the current era.
One of the most quoted living Africology scholars in the world, Molefi Kete Asante has partnered with scholars of African and Africana studies to highlight the theoretical underpinnings of the idea of diaspora, unpacking the ways in which the African Diaspora has continued to influence the world today.
This volume clarifies the relationship of capoeira to the quilombos of the African Brazilian past by linking the rise of the dance form to the African continent, especially in Angola and Congo. It also demonstrates in a strikingly persistent and informative manner the African diaspora among the Siddi and Ceylon African populations. By examining the self-identification of African people in Colombia and the African Diaspora in Europe, the Pacific, and the Americas, this book centers African agency in the Diaspora, highlighting global connections that have received marginal attention.

This book examines China's grassroots electoral experiments and their transformation into instruments of centralized political control. It provides the first comprehensive, historically grounded analysis of village, township, and consultative elections from the 1980s to the present.
Tracing the rise of "sea elections" and their gradual institutional containment, the book shows how limited democratic practices emerged within a one-party system and were later restructured to reinforce state authority. It introduces the concept of "top-down governance logic" to explain how electoral participation can coexist with authoritarian resilience. Combining long-term field research, archival materials, and comparative political analysis, the book situates China's experience within broader debates on authoritarian governance, democratic experimentation, political reform, and adaptive legitimacy. It demonstrates how elections in China functioned simultaneously as experiments in participation and mechanisms of political consolidation.

In the first major book on the Senate of Pakistan since its creation in 1973, Dilawar Hussain explores its institutional history, membership, constitutional powers and key functions and how these have changed since the introduction of the Eighteenth Constitutional Amendment in 2010.
This book provides empirical flesh to the assumption that, in a federal state, a second chamber is needed to accommodate regional concerns at a federal level. The author explores the institutional history of the Pakistani Senate through its composition, constitutional powers, and key functions as a regional chamber and explains the broader institutional environment in which it operates.
This book analyses the impact of the Pakistani Senate as an overseer of federal policies and legislation of the federal government and appraises the parliamentary performance of the senators in advancing concerns of the provinces at the federal level.
It also argues that the parliamentary nature of the Pakistani federation has strengthened the executive branch in which the Pakistani Senate operates, and has thus undermined its role as a regional chamber. Within a historical and comparative context, the book provides insight into the Senate's 'political legitimacy' and options for its institutional reforms.
Additionally, through the exploration of bicameralism internationally, the book offers a conceptual framework for assessing the institutional strength, institutional design and parliamentary performance of the political institutions. This theoretical, methodological and empirical study is a major contribution to the empirical study of parliamentary behavior and the changing nature of political representation in Pakistan and beyond.
