This book provides a comprehensive historical and institutional foundation for understanding the shifting power dynamics within the contemporary Indo-Pacific and East Asia. It examines the region's complex security architecture, focusing on the U.S.-led alliance system, ASEAN-centric multilateralism as well as China-led multilateralism, and emerging minilateral networks to explain how regional stability is maintained. The narrative moves beyond a simple overview, tracing the evolution of these institutional frameworks over decades. The chapters explore how the interplay between traditional bilateral alliances and modern diplomatic forums has created a unique security order. Rather than focusing on just one aspect, the text highlights how these different mechanisms adapt to rising tensions and strategic competition. By analyzing the historical roots of these relationships, the volume provides the essential context needed to understand the deeper rivalries shaping the region today. As the first part of a two-volume study, this research establishes the analytical groundwork for understanding regional order. It serves as an indispensable guide for anyone looking to grasp the foundations of great-power competition before exploring the specific Sino-Japanese visions for the future addressed in Volume II.

Sri Lanka in 1915 was rife with tensions in response to colonialism, ethnic assertion, migration, economic change, and religious revival. The island was also part of an Indian Ocean theatre of the First World War that saw action and intrigue. Against that backdrop erupted the 1915 anti-Moor pogrom, the scale and intensity of which was unprecedented. 1915 often serves as a reminder that communal violence in Sri Lanka did not emerge after Independence in 1948; instead, it has deeper roots within the colonial period. Yet, the narrative that 1915 was the beginning of such violence can also be misleading. 1915 did not mark the beginning of Sinhalese-Moor conflict, but was, in fact, the culmination of recurrent violence between the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. How should we understand the significance of the attacks against Moors in 1915? This book re-opens a neglected chapter in Sri Lanka's history by critically re-examining the deeper roots of ethno-religious violence between Sinhalese and Moors. It explores the role of colonial discourse and policies on public order and trade in bringing ethno-religious groups into conflict with each other, while analysing the impact of Buddhist and Islamic revival on group assertion. Sinhalese and Moors are not flattened to victims or passive subjects of colonial rule. Instead, the book explores their agency and processes of identity formation, and their ability to negotiate with a powerful colonial state. Meanwhile, the book situates Sri Lanka in the First World War, and explores how pressures and assumptions flowing from the global context of the War impacted the colonial state's response to the pogrom, shifting it from initial inaction to eventual excess.

From the forging of a constitution for the postindependence republic to the reign of Narendra Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party today, the idea of India as a nation-state has predominated. Yet the country encompasses a vast diversity of communities, regions, languages, and cultures, calling into question any unitary identity.

In this magisterial account of Indian politics over the past seventy-five years, the renowned scholar Partha Chatterjee challenges common notions of "state" and "nation," arguing for a more capacious understanding of "the people." He examines the varying trajectories of the Indian nation-state, as opposed to what he calls the "people-nation," analyzing the complex connections between the two. Chatterjee offers a persuasive political-economic analysis of the transition from the time of developmental planning to the present era of capitalist dominance. He combines keen analysis of changing caste-class-gender formations in the country's diverse regions with a close examination of the uneven spread of India's capitalist economy.

By looking beyond the nation-state, this book unveils many hidden aspects of Indian politics today-and makes a powerful case for a future in which the federal system respects the equal worth of each part of the country.

This volume brings together a diverse group of Australian scholars who offer a range of perspectives on Australian identity and "being Australian" through the lens of food. It addresses the complex nature of Australia's always-evolving culinary landscape where multiculturalism and enduring Indigenous foodways are entangled with settler-colonial legacies. How has Australian food culture been shaped by the way Australians see themselves and by their cultural assumptions and aspirations in an increasingly globalised world? What role do foods from Indigenous and immigrants' cuisines play in Australian culinary identity - how have they been acclimatized and acculturated, interpreted or adapted, adopted and at times co-opted in Australian and global contexts? And how do Aboriginal Australians and immigrants assert their senses of identity through food?

Through its multidisciplinary approach to these and other contemporary debates around food and identity in Australia from both non-Indigenous and Aboriginal scholars, this book makes a unique contribution to the literature on food and food culture in Australia.

This edited book presents new research and examines perspectives, of predominantly local academics and researchers, of how community development responses might effectively address violent and hateful extremism (VHE) in Kenya. By adopting an expanded definition of violent extremism that encompasses hate speech and other forms of hate, the book investigates the interconnectedness of various forms of conflict and social harm with violent extremism, and explores community development approaches that might counter and help prevent them. It examines context-specific strategies tailored to the unique socio-political landscape of Kenya, highlighting good practices, failures, and key lessons learned from civil society organisation (CSO)-led initiatives. The book promotes multidisciplinary and collaborative approaches, emphasising the importance of partnerships between CSOs, government agencies, and other stakeholders. It contributes to academic, practice, and policy debates on locally-led and context-specific development responses to extremism, providing empirically grounded insights and theoretical reflections to inform decisions at local, national, and international levels. As such, the book will be a valuable resource for scholars, practitioners, and policymakers working to promote peace and resilience in Kenya, as well as other extremism- and conflict-affected regions.

This study examines the intersection of media, politics, and public discourse in Uganda, tracing historical trajectories from colonial print cultures to contemporary digital activism. It adopts a qualitative approach grounded in mediatization theories, arguing that Uganda's media system operates as a field of negotiated hegemony where power and resistance coexist. Across twelve chapters, the book explores print, broadcast, digital, religious, and gendered mediations of political life, revealing how communication practices construct, sustain, and challenge state authority. The findings underscore that media in Uganda is not merely a reflection of society but a central arena where citizenship, identity, and legitimacy are continually performed and contested.

Disasters engage with time in diverse ways and cannot be fully understood as events or processes. Tomas Uson explores how time emerges from disastrous encounters. Building on ethnographic research in the Callejon de Huaylas, he analyses how cities in this Peruvian Andean region have responded to and anticipated extreme events over the past century. Inspired by the Quechua word tinkuy, or gathering in difference, this study invites readers to see disasters both as socio-material arrangements and moments where historical figures gather in conflicting ways: a valuable resource for those interested in disasters, memory, science and technology studies, decolonial perspectives, and Peruvian history.

This Cambridge History is the most comprehensive longue duree treatment of Confucianism to date, bringing a much-needed historical perspective to this major force in art, literature, science and politics. Volume I traces the pre-modern history of Confucianism in three parts, from the earliest times to the fifteenth century. Looking beyond the influence of Neo-Confucian interpretations of the tradition, the chapters provide historically grounded perspectives on Confucianism's origins and practice. They examine how Confucian thought both influenced and was influenced by historical trends across time, including interstate relations and state-building, social structures, religion, gender and the family. Unpacking rigidly doctrinal narratives, this volume uncovers how Confucianism was really applied in dense social networks, bridging the apparent contradictions between the ideal tradition and its actual practice.

Amid global concern over democratic backsliding, Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan are often viewed as exceptions-stable, healthy democracies. Yet illiberal trends have been quietly growing in each country since the early 2010s. South Korea's martial law crisis in December 2024 shocked the world, and all three East Asian democracies face rising threats to elections, the rule of law, and civil and political rights.

Drawing on extensive multilingual research, Christopher Carothers traces the forces undermining democracy in Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan. East Asia's Troubled Democracies identifies the crucial factor fueling challenges in each country: the overcentralization of power in Japan, political polarization in South Korea, and Beijing's interference in Taiwan. In addition, all three countries have seen rising immigration, changing norms around gender and sexuality, and shifting views of national identity since the 1990s. This rapid sociocultural change has provoked political backlash, straining democratic norms. At the same time, as Carothers shows, historical, institutional, and demographic characteristics shared across these three societies have bolstered democratic resilience.

Compellingly written and rigorously argued, this book provides a nuanced corrective to overly optimistic views of the state of democracy in East Asia and reveals how global trends in democratic erosion are playing out in this critical region.

Hedging, not balancing or bandwagoning, is the modal behavior of the non-great powers under uncertainty. Despite its prevalence as a state alignment choice, hedging has remained an undertheorized subject in the study of international relations. This Element presents one of the first theoretical works on strategic hedging in world politics. Tracing the multidisciplinary roots of hedging as an instinctive human behavior, I contend that sovereign actors hedge in ways similar to commodity traders, farmers, fund managers, academic writers, politicians, and individuals in competitive organizations under conditions of high-stakes and high-uncertainties. I then develop a two-level theoretical framework to explain when, how and why states hedge, rather than balance or bandwagon. Using selected Indo-Pacific countries as empirical cases, I conclude that while structural-level conditions largely explain the shifts in alignment decisions (e.g., from non-hedging to hedging, or vice versa), domestic factors explain the variations in hedging choices.

Since the end of the civil war in 1990 and the Syrian occupation in 2005, Lebanon has held relatively free elections and maintained power-sharing arrangements among its diverse ethnic groups. Yet the country is hardly a democratic success story: Even as governance quality remains poor, incumbents maintain an ironclad grip on electoral power. The Art of Not Governing offers a fresh analysis of Lebanon's political challenges that foregrounds local elections and institutions-and delivers a new account of how local politics influence broader patterns of state-building and democratization.

Christiana Parreira explores the tension between central and local authority in post-civil war Lebanon, drawing on years of fieldwork, more than 140 interviews, and original survey research. She traces the formation of a party cartel system that maintains control at the national level by inhibiting opposition at the local level, intervening in municipal politics to reward loyalty and punish opposition. Central state elites use their control over resource distribution to obtain monopolies on local political power, preventing local governments from acting independently. Challenging prevailing framings of local governments as guardians of democratic accountability, The Art of Not Governing sheds new light on why recently democratized states fail to represent the interests of their citizens.

Uncovers the hidden history of conservation, conflict, and resistance on the Mozambique-Zimbabwe border.

Drawing on rich oral testimonies and archival records, this book examines the impact of colonial wildlife conservation policies on African societies and borderlands. Through this exploration, the author shows how colonial "fortress conservation" policies-game reserves, hunting concessions, and land restrictions-disrupted rural life, fueled grievances, and shaped popular participation in the wars of liberation.

By comparing Portuguese and British approaches across a shared cultural and ecological region, this book challenges conventional colonial divides to reveal how conservation became entangled with nationalism, migration, and survival. Extending into the postcolonial era, it also highlights how projects like the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park carried forward legacies of exclusion under new guises.

Engaging and accessible, this book is essential reading for scholars, students, policymakers, and anyone interested in African history, environmental politics, or the complex ties between people, land, and wildlife.

Shows how communities across the Americas transform their grief over murdered and missing trans and non-trans women, girls, and two-spirit people into powerful social movements that challenge state violence and demand justice.

A groundbreaking and transnational examination of gender-based violence, Mourning and Mobilization in the Americas reimagines how we understand the relationship between grief and political action. Lydia Huerta Moreno brings together the work of activists, scholars, artists, writers, and influencers from 1994 to 2023 to chronicle the intersection of activism with the rise of social media and the eventual implementation of legislation codifying woman killing as a crime. Expanding the concept of feminicide to encompass trans women, two-spirit people, and missing and murdered women and girls across the Americas, Huerta Moreno illuminates the deep connections between different forms of gender-based violence across the Americas and weaves together questions of race, class, gender, and immigration status. Through innovative and sensitive analysis of postmortem politics, the book reveals how communities transform profound loss into powerful social movements, from Mexico to Brazil to the United States and Canada and beyond. With a foreword by Sayak Valencia, Mourning and Mobilization in the Americas is a must-read for activists, scholars, and anyone concerned with human rights, revealing how grief can spark resistance against systemic violence and government inaction.

The twentieth-century consolidation of the nation-state as the dominant political institution has meant that political theorists have conceptualised justice primarily through the provision of statist rights. The author shows that the concept of haqq allows us to recognise and move past some limitations of justice as statist rights. Focussing on critical theory, given its sympathetic substantive focus on oppression and liberatory struggles, and methodological emphasis on combining empirical detail with theoretical insight, she argues that dominant strands are locked in a circular debate due to their investment in statist visions of justice. This renders their theorising irrelevant to the concerns of many especially in the Global South, and importantly, truncates imagination of alternatives. Building upon oral histories of refugees from the Tribal Areas of Pakistan and their articulation of haqq, the author argues for approaching haqq as enabling actually existing non-statist justice that foregrounds the agency of the oppressed.

This book traces the shifting contours of caste and agrarian inequality, revealing how older hierarchies are being reconfigured in new forms and how they impact democracy. It offers a compelling ethnographic account of how democratic mechanisms-including political participation, elections, and protest movements-actually function in rural India. Focusing on Indian Punjab, it reveals the often stark disconnect between formal democratic ideals and ground-level realities. Engaging with major debates on clientelism, identity politics, and the criminalisation of politics, the book sheds light on the complexities of political representation and accountability. The book also fills a critical gap in the political anthropology of Indian Punjab, offering valuable insights into the region's current political discontent. This title is also available as open access on Cambridge Core.

This book offers a theoretical and empirical explanation of the intersection of border, diplomacy, and security, with particular emphasis on the border policies and practices of Nigeria and South Africa in the context of border enforcement, cross-border concessions and agreements, visa regimes, migration control, and refugee policies. Primarily focusing on physical frontiers, particularly borderlands, the author draws on the African realist assumption of African international relations and the lived experience of state and non-state actors to explain the divergence and convergence in the border and security practices of the two states, emphasising African agency and experiential realities in the understanding and framing of the continent's experience. The book also examines the limitations to the effectiveness of the two states' border practices and how such factors impact not only their security landscapes but also the regional 'borderless Africa' agenda in the context of the AfCFTA and the continental-wide Free Movement Protocol.

This book analyzes how Japan, Taiwan, South Korea, and China achieved rapid economic development through public policies and technological innovation in East Asia. The work examines the fundamental role of the state and industrial strategies in the process of technological catching-up in these economies. Throughout its chapters, the author explores the historical foundations and economic policies of each country under global geopolitical pressures. The book begins with two chapters addressing the economic rise of East Asia and the main heterodox developmental literatures, followed by four chapters discussing these specific experiences (Japanese, Taiwanese, South Korean, and Chinese), and finally, a comparative conclusion. Finally, the analysis focuses on the role of state-owned enterprises, government planning, and technical bureaucracies in sustaining growth. Written in clear and accessible language, this book is essential for researchers, students, and anyone interested in understanding the role of the state and the lessons of Asian development for the contemporary global landscape.

Since 2015, China has actively promoted "third-party market cooperation" as a new model of international economic engagement. This approach brings together China, advanced economies, and beneficiary countries to jointly develop infrastructure and construction projects, moving beyond traditional bilateral cooperation framework. Official narratives portray tripartite cooperation as a "triple-win" arrangement that combines China's manufacturing capacity, partner countries' advanced technologies, and the development needs of beneficiary countries. While such cooperation promises risk-sharing, resource complementarity, and enhanced project quality, it also introduces new challenges, including higher transaction costs, divergent governance practices, and complex negotiations among multiple actors.

Addressing the central question of why stakeholders choose tripartite cooperation and how three-party collaboration shapes project outcomes, the book makes both theoretical and practical contributions. It integrates transaction cost theory, international relations theory, foreign direct investment theory, and infrastructure natural monopoly theory to advance a novel concept of "semi-internalisation." The analysis provides policymakers, practitioners, and scholars with a framework to understand partner selection, interest alignment, and the evolving dynamics of one of China's significant yet understudied innovations in global economic cooperation

This edited volume investigates the shaping, suppression, and circulation of medical and pharmaceutical knowledge in colonial Goa, situating these processes within the region's political, religious, and commercial networks. Spanning from the sixteenth to the early twentieth century, the chapters trace developments from Garcia de Orta's engagement with local plant-based knowledge to the compilation of herbaria used as medical vademecums across Jesuit global networks. The collection also explores the hybrid medical practices in eighteenth century Goan hospitals, the institutionalisation of medical education, and the contested legitimacy of healing practices during epidemics such as smallpox, plague, and cholera in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Rather than framing colonial medicine as a binary between European and Asian systems under a sanitary regime, the contributors draw on earlier historical layers to illuminate the complexities of medical knowledge production in Goa.
