This book explores how urban spaces and imagery serve as vessels for artistic creation, conveying cultural identity and heritage, by focusing on Macau as a case study. The book examines the role of city imagery in the contexts of World Heritage and intangible cultural heritage, and its transformation into artistic expression. Through field research, artist interviews, and detailed case studies, the book presents the creative processes of 22 artists, revealing how the "mountain-sea-city" imagery is translated into diverse artistic languages and media. By tracing Macau's historical development, spatial patterns, landscape characteristics, and folk traditions, the text demonstrates how urban imagery functions as a multi-layered symbol connecting natural environments, historical sites, and cultural practices. This volume highlights the significance of artistic interpretation in shaping cultural identity, preserving heritage, and fostering urban memory. It also provides theoretical and methodological insights into how art and design can operate as interdisciplinary tools for reinterpreting and re-presenting cultural heritage in contemporary contexts. It is relevant to researchers, graduate students, artists, and cultural policymakers, offering a unique perspective on the intersection of art, urban space, and heritage, and serves as a practical reference for understanding cross-cultural artistic practice and the narration of urban memory.

This extraordinary memoir by Concha Lombardo de Miramon is the only known autobiography written by a nineteenth-century Mexican woman. In it she recounts her life from her birth in Mexico City to the beginning of her long European exile following her husband's execution for supporting Maximilian, the ill-fated Austrian prince who established an empire in Mexico. Now available for the first time in English, translated and edited by Silvia Marina Arrom, it offers rich insight into Mexico's past from a female perspective. Concha provides not only eyewitness accounts of Mexico's bitter civil wars and leading political figures, but also lively anecdotes of daily life that both confirm and question stereotypes about women and gender. Readers will enjoy, and relate to, her accounts of family secrets, childhood mischief, possessive boyfriends, marital spats, practical jokes, daring escapades, and, finally, a love story that ends in tragedy.

Economic competition between the United States and China has been a defining issue of the twenty-first century. But after years of rapid growth, China's economy has faltered. How did its long-term economic outlook change so quickly? And can Beijing change course and preserve China's political ambition for global economic primacy?

In Broken China, Logan Wright offers an unflinching account of how China's economy hit the wall. Drawing on extensive experience analyzing the Chinese financial sector on the ground, he argues that China's economic slowdown is rooted in its financial system, and an unprecedented credit expansion finally coming to an end. Opposing the prevailing myth that its leaders think and plan many years ahead, this book posits that there was no long-term plan that included the credit boom and bust that now constrains Beijing's options. Rather than crisis or collapse, Wright argues, China is suffering from a decay of its economic policy tools. As its domestic and foreign sectors face increasing pressure, the last thing Beijing needs is global pushback against Chinese exports. With no clear path to recovery, China's economy is broken, the consequences of which will reverberate around the world.

Worldwide neoliberal urban planning and securitisation create childhoods marked by segregation, confinement and isolation. Especially in middle- and upper-class milieus, childhood appears as a spatial crisis in which children are patronised and disempowered in the name of protection. Claudia Mock draws on intergenerational biographies and mental maps from Nairobi and Berlin to reveal how security discourses intertwine with bourgeois values and architectures, reshaping childhoods in these cities in surprisingly similar ways since 1960. By identifying bourgeois lifestyles and adultism as integral to anthropocentric urban crises, she calls for cities to be reimagined through intergenerational spatial justice.

In the early sixteenth century, a Persian-speaking Muslim merchant named ?Ali Akbar Khatayi traveled to China and stayed for six years. There he acquired inside knowledge of the Ming imperial court and gained familiarity with the government bureaucracy, the military, and the daily lives and culture of ordinary people. In a treatise presented to the rulers of the Ottoman Empire, Khatayi laid out his observations-here translated in full into English for the first time.

The Book of China is the most in-depth and sophisticated account of China's government, society, and culture written by a foreigner before the era of European global dominance and an incomparable record of Eurasian perceptions of China at the dawn of the gunpowder age. In contrast to travelers such as Marco Polo, Khatayi not only chronicled sights and wonders but also sought systematic explanations for Ming China's wealth and power. He found the answer in Chinese governmental institutions and the universal rule of law, to which administrators and even the emperor himself were subject. His text also provides vivid descriptions of street life, festivals, and places from temples to brothels to the prison where he and his companions were detained. Opening a window onto the colorful worlds of the Ming court and the Silk Road, The Book of China shows how travel and cultural contact could inspire political imagination across continents.

In June 1968, a twenty-four-year-old Palestinian immigrant named Sirhan B. Sirhan assassinated Senator Robert F. Kennedy, marking yet another killing in a decade haunted by political violence. As he was being subdued, Sirhan shouted, "I can explain. I did it for my country," by which he meant Palestine. On trial, he testified that his motives included opposition to Zionism, with particular anger directed toward Kennedy because of the senator's call for arms sales to Israel. Despite Sirhan's confessions, the significance of the Arab-Israeli conflict to the slaying largely escaped notice-or was actively obscured.

I Did It for My Country is a revelatory account of Sirhan and the political dimensions of the assassination of Robert F. Kennedy. It illuminates Sirhan's Palestinian background, war-torn childhood, and experience of displacement, considering to what extent trauma contributed to his mental health problems. Michael R. Fischbach uncovers how prominent actors-from the United States and Middle Eastern governments to Jewish and Arab American groups-deliberately depoliticized the assassination by downplaying Sirhan's grievances about American support for Israel. He also examines why US authorities investigated possible Arab co-conspirators and explores how Palestinians understood Sirhan's action, as well as how Sirhan has maintained his Palestinian nationalism during his decades in prison. Drawing on in-depth archival research-including FBI and CIA documents-this book pinpoints a missed opportunity to consider how US foreign policy could affect domestic security.

Examining the African Diaspora in Africology, this book explores the fundamental issues involving the dispersion of Africans from antiquity to the current era.

One of the most quoted living Africology scholars in the world, Molefi Kete Asante has partnered with scholars of African and Africana studies to highlight the theoretical underpinnings of the idea of diaspora, unpacking the ways in which the African Diaspora has continued to influence the world today.

This volume clarifies the relationship of capoeira to the quilombos of the African Brazilian past by linking the rise of the dance form to the African continent, especially in Angola and Congo. It also demonstrates in a strikingly persistent and informative manner the African diaspora among the Siddi and Ceylon African populations. By examining the self-identification of African people in Colombia and the African Diaspora in Europe, the Pacific, and the Americas, this book centers African agency in the Diaspora, highlighting global connections that have received marginal attention.

This book examines one of the deepest paradoxes of Colombia's transition: how a peace agreement and its most innovative institution, the Special Jurisdiction for Peace (SJP), came to divide the nation so profoundly, even as international institutions and experts hailed it as a pioneering model of transitional justice. Part 1 provides historical context for Colombia's long search for peace, the creation of the SJP, and explains why it generated fear, anger, and political backlash across broad sectors of society. Part 2 centres on the nearly 9 million victims who have borne the gravest consequences of the conflict, through an in-depth analysis of two major SJP macro-cases involving all principal conflict actors. Part 3 examines both the transformative power and the jurisdictional limits of the SJP, especially its uneven capacity to reach the full range of actors implicated in the conflict. The book ultimately asks whether the SJP's attempt to construct a comprehensive judicial truth can do more than illuminate the past: can it also help narrow the moral and political divide between victims and sectors of the elites that benefited, directly or indirectly, from the conflict? Drawing on extensive fieldwork, interviews, primary sources, media, social media, local knowledge, and first-hand observation, this book offers a critical and original account of the SJP as one of the most ambitious efforts anywhere to reinvent justice after mass atrocity.

Inclusive Governance and Marginalized Communities in South Asia: The Case of Bangladesh confronts a South Asian governance paradox: why progressive policies for inclusive local government systematically fail to empower marginalized communities. Drawing on extensive fieldwork in Bangladesh's Rajshahi district--where the authors interviewed Dalits, persons with disabilities, and officials, and conducted community discussions--the book reveals the 'institutional tokenism' in participatory mechanisms such as Ward Shavas and Open Budget Meetings. Although mandated by the Local Government (Union Parishad) Act, 2009, these forums often function as staged performances wherein marginalized voices are recorded but not heard, consulted but not influential. The book identifies three intersecting barriers--elite capture, bureaucratic inefficiency, and symbolic violence--that transform inclusionary spaces into sites of exclusion. Moreover, the analysis presents comparisons with India, Nepal, and Sri Lanka, highlighting shared patterns of performative inclusion despite diverse institutional architectures. Rejecting technical solutions, Panday and Ahsan argue that meaningful inclusion requires fundamental power redistribution and institutional cultural transformation. The book further introduces a diagnostic framework for adaptive inclusion that emphasizes continuous democratic learning, providing scholars, policymakers, and development practitioners with essential tools to identify and dismantle tokenism in their respective contexts.

A remarkable transformation is taking place in the Middle East. As old ideologies from nationalism to fundamentalism falter, many people are embracing a new vision grounded in secularism, gender equality, and individual freedom. Cracks in Tradition is a bold, data-driven account of the rise of liberal values in the Middle East, revealing the depth and breadth of a movement with the potential to change the course of world politics.

Drawing on more than 70,000 face-to-face interviews and in-depth qualitative insights from Egypt and Tunisia, Mansoor Moaddel rigorously analyzes real-world attitudes and trends. He provides a nuanced portrait of a region in flux, where liberal ideas are gaining strength despite the enduring power of fundamentalism and authoritarianism. Challenging entrenched assumptions and longstanding biases, Moaddel demonstrates that liberalism has emerged organically from within Middle Eastern societies, driven by local social, cultural, and historical dynamics. His groundbreaking model of ideological change shows how key domains of social life-governance, gender, and personal autonomy-are being reshaped by new systems of meaning, spurring the spread of liberal values. Provocatively argued and empirically rich, Cracks in Tradition provides a fresh, optimistic perspective on the future of the Middle East and global democracy.

In Buenos Aires' garment industry, workers reshape precarious working conditions through collective organization and throughout their trajectories of migration and garment work. Moving beyond victimizing or criminalizing narratives, Karlotta Jule Bahnsen offers an ethnographic view of migrant workers' negotiations of intersectional inequalities across migration, gender, and labor, highlighting processes of transformation, transnational networks, and the hidden structures sustaining Buenos Aires' urban fashion industry. This unique perspective speaks to scholars of Latin America, informal labor in global industries, migration, and gender, while offering a vivid account of agency that resonates beyond academia.

The Ottoman Empire long used flexible administrative arrangements to govern its vast domains. Starting in the 1830s, however, European intervention in Ottoman affairs resulted in the emergence of a new type of negotiated province. The "privileged provinces," which included Egypt and Mount Lebanon, enjoyed levels of administrative autonomy that were unparalleled not only within the Ottoman domains but also in late nineteenth-century imperial systems more broadly.

Empire by Law reveals the importance of the Ottoman Empire's autonomous provinces, both within the empire and in the history of international relations. Aimee M. Genell argues that these provinces became the key arena in which possibilities for sovereignty and imperial control were negotiated and tested in the Middle East. She traces how the Ottoman state turned to international law to maintain control over parts of the empire that European powers attempted to wrest from it. Genell demonstrates that the concept of autonomy provided an important alternative model for imperial organization among the empire's diverse subjects, even as successive Ottoman governments tried to curtail it. She argues that the Ottoman model of autonomy became the foundation for the mandate system established in the Middle East after World War I, with lasting and catastrophic consequences for the region. Bridging legal, international, and imperial history, this book shows how Ottoman practices of governance shaped the Middle Eastern political order.

This book offers a uniquely comprehensive and comparative analysis of the War on Terror through the lens of Arab media-a perspective that remains significantly underrepresented in current scholarship. By focusing on two influential but ideologically divergent media blocs-Al Jazeera Arabic and the grouping of Al Arabiya with state-aligned Egyptian outlets-the book provides critical insights into how media narratives are shaped by political alignment, ownership, and regional rivalries.

What makes this book distinctive is its integration of media analysis with geopolitical inquiry. The book not only decodes the frames and discourses used to portray terrorism and counterterrorism but also contextualizes these within broader power struggles in the Arab world, including the Qatar-Saudi/Egyptian axis and their ties to U.S. policy. It bridges disciplines by combining the analytical tools of media studies with the political frameworks of international relations and security studies. It will appeal to all those interested in political science, media studies, Middle East politics, international relations, and journalism.

The Great War ended with the Ottoman Empire's defeat, its remaining territories destined for partition at the Paris Peace Conference. However, this settlement was complicated by a global moment of Muslim internationalism, as revolutions, revolts, and wars of independence swept across the Muslim world. Muslim internationalists resisted European imperialism, demanded self-determination, envisioned federations, and sought anticolonial alliances with Soviet Russia. Amid this crisis of empire, European powers grew alarmed by the specter of "Islamic Bolshevism"-any ideological, incidental, or imagined alignment between Muslim anticolonial movements and communism-which they saw as a threat to global order.

Alp Yenen tells the story of a group of exiled "Young Turk" leaders-fugitive Ottoman statesmen wanted as war criminals for the Armenian Genocide-who sought to seize this moment by founding the Union of Muslim Revolutionary Societies. This "Young Turk International" connected Muslim revolutionaries with German revisionists and Russian Bolsheviks, forging transnational networks with Arabs and Indians and international alliances with Turkey, Iran, and Afghanistan to challenge European hegemony. Although their efforts ultimately failed, their story illuminates the lost possibilities of Muslim internationalism and the emergence of the post-Ottoman political landscape. Beyond this movement's spectacular rise and fall between 1918 and 1922, this book explores how imperial security discourses, the agency of nonstate actors, and the consolidation of state hegemony shaped the global order. Based on extensive research in private papers and state archives, The Young Turk International offers a new global history of the post-World War I peace settlement.

In recent decades, organisations such as the African Union have developed significant intelligence capabilities. Yet, existing research on intelligence in the Global South remains limited, and African intelligence institutions are understudied, their innovations under-recognised, and their challenges under-theorised. Tunji Namaiko focuses on the Continental Early Warning System (CEWS), whose operationalisation started in 2006, arguing that this system represents the most ambitious, integrated, and wide-ranging form of multilateral intelligence cooperation in the Global South. Namaiko demonstrates that despite sovereignty concerns, African states have institutionalised intelligence cooperation in a way that links intelligence directly to conflict prevention and peacebuilding, rather than merely to foreign policy or military objectives. This study connects theory, policy, and practice, offering new insights into how intelligence functions in regional integration processes. Between 1975 and 1983, Guatemala's hydrocarbon development became deeply entangled with state-led violence during the country's civil war. The United States' efforts to secure favorable access to Guatemalan oil intersected with-and in some cases redirected-the trajectory of U.S. foreign assistance and human rights policy.

In the first book on U.S.-Guatemalan hydrocarbon relations, Richard M. Balzano exposes the arms-for-aid diplomacy and duplicity in the Reagan administration, who actively supported the Guatemalan government as they inflicted violence on their own citizens. US-Guatemalan Petro-Diplomacy in the Twentieth Century makes several original contributions to the existing scholarship on Guatemalan energy development and inter-American resource imperialism. Balzano challenges the notion that Guatemala was a peripheral concern in Reagan's Cold War strategy in Central America, arguing instead that it played a pivotal role in shaping U.S. regional policy.

Present in the heart of modern Palestinian literature is a pervasive sense of rootedness, sustained and nurtured by a deep care for land stewardship and embedded in a spatialized history. In Rooted Movements, Amanda Batarseh examines the epistemology of Palestinian Indigeneity based in a radical relationship to place. Against a colonial logic that often centers displacement as the chief lens through which to understand Palestinian connection to place and spatialized existence, Batarseh argues that Palestinian literature poses Indigeneity as a dialectic relying as much upon rootedness as on ideas of movement.

In elaborating this tension, Batarseh develops a methodology of reading Palestinian literature that foregrounds how Palestinians negotiate space and removal through liberatory mobilization and not as a symptom of zionist, colonial violence. Reading the poetry, creative nonfiction, essays, novels, and films of writers in Palestine and in exile-from Ghassan Kanafani to Naomi Shihab Nye, Hussein Barghouthi, Raja Shehadeh, Ibtisam Azem, and Randa Jarrar-she exposes the limitations of focusing on the geopolitical borders of a modern nation-state and offers alternative imaginaries not bound by colonial spatial control. Instead, the Palestinian poetics of space Batarseh articulates engage rooted movement as an Indigenous expression of deep-seated and enduring connections to place. Palestine, this place, is not static, enclosed by military boundaries, or frozen in time before or after the Nakba, but generative and looking toward a Palestinian future.

This element offers a fresh and distinctive viewpoint on the historical-archaeology of monarchic Israel during the Iron Age (ca. 1000-720 BCE). It provides an easy-to-read archaeological overview of main finds from key sites in the northern parts of the southern Levant, which opens the door to beginners as well as to experts into the world of biblical archaeology. It further discusses methodological questions pertaining to the identification of political entities in the archaeological record, and the ways in which material remains and textual sources interact. This book does not presuppose Israel as a well-defined and long-lasting political entity but aims to uncover its underlying social and political hierarchies and interactions, thus portraying a more nuanced image of monarchic Israel: the communities from which it consisted, the socio-political infrastructure that facilitated its emergence and maintenance, and the ways in which political hegemony was exercised within it.

This book examines the role of trade fairs and religious festivals in shaping dynamic relations between the Ottoman state and its diverse populace during the reign of Sultan Abduelhamid II. It analyzes the influence of historical conflicts, provincial power struggles, and public demands on the evolution of public gatherings.

Through case studies and examples from diverse provinces that showcase instances where local agents actively participated in decision-making processes, Fairs, Festivals, and State-Society Relations in the Ottoman Empire, 1876-1908 analyzes the influence of historical conflicts, provincial power struggles, and public demands on the evolution of public gatherings in terms of location, content, dates, scope, security, and entertainment. As performative spaces, fairs and festivals facilitated the construction of new national identities and collective consciousness because thousands of people from all walks of life gathered in these meetings and were exposed to state-endorsed and privately produced political messages across the empire. Semih Goekatalay demonstrates that the transformation of collective gatherings took place as a result of ongoing negotiation between political elites.
