From the Maghreb in North Africa to the Levant in the East, the COVID-19 pandemic dramatically impacted politics - and the promise of democratic governance - within the MENA region. In this edited volume, Anis Ben Brik assembles a group of scholars to explore how the Middle East and North Africa grappled with an unprecedented global health crisis that transcended medical dimensions and continues to manifest profound social, political, and economic implications for its people.

Featuring timely original research, including in-depth case studies and cross-country comparisons, contributors take us inside a region already grappling with complex political systems, social structures, and historical legacies. They show us how the pandemic triggered widespread democratic backsliding in the region, as countries like Egypt, Iran, and Saudi Arabia began to adopt emergency measures that extended well beyond the immediate public health crisis, including increased censorship, arrests of activists and journalists, and the suppression of political dissent. Contributors also examine how the pandemic impacted perceptions of political legitimacy within the region, shaping people's support and opposition to emergency measures, legislation, and regimes and governments themselves.

Ultimately, the book captures the ways in which a global state of emergency created even more opportunities for political abuse and suppression, enabling authoritarian leaders to further consolidate their power within the region.

In the wake of the Second Intifada and energized by the Arab Spring, young Palestinian designers have used fashion to voice their political consciousness and forge affective communities in the face of Israeli occupation. This book proposes to understand their practices as "queer decolonial fashion," a collaborative aesthetic ethos attuned to gender, sexuality, race, and the environment that transcends nationalist framings of the Palestinian struggle. Making the case for queer decolonial fashion as a model of creative activism, Dressed for Dissent shows how these designers' work-imbricated with body, identity, and land-ultimately emerges as a site where a viable future for a free Palestine can be envisioned, while also offering insights relevant to other settler-colonial contexts.

This book analyzes China's food safety co-governance with Chinese characteristics through the Asymmetric Party-State-Society (PSS) Triangle Structure, combining theoretical analysis with 67 interviews conducted between 2018 and 2024. It traces how this framework took shape and matured from the 2008 melamine scandal to the present.

The framework positions the Communist Party at the apex, providing strategic direction; the government at the base, translating directives into enforceable standards and enforcement; and society at the pivot, participating within state-defined boundaries. Every twenty years for over a millennium, the Ise shrines have been rebuilt from the ground up, and hundreds of shrine treasures replaced. At Ise, the aspiration to timelessness that is the essence of all monuments has been pursued through endless repetition rather than construction in durable materials. Spanning from Ise's prehistoric beginnings to the present, A History of Timelessness explores the manifold circulation of goods this massive enterprise has engendered, as well as the political and ideological purposes the ritual rebuilding has served. In the late nineteenth century, the state took control of the shrines and recast them as an embodiment of modern imperial power. Yet, rather than resolving their status, nationalization awakened new anxieties around Ise's permanence and ephemerality and new contests over shrine buildings and materials. Through an exploration of Ise's tumultuous history, Jordan Sand rethinks the temporality of monuments and the materiality of the state.

This volume offers a new explanation as to why Latin American and Caribbean governments respond so differently to the growing presence in the Western Hemisphere of the People's Republic of China. The remarkable journey of a group of Black emigrants from the American South to Liberia after emancipation

In October 1865, six months after the Civil War ended, more than one hundred of the Black residents of Lynchburg, Virginia, left their homes to cross the ocean and begin their lives anew. Their destination was Liberia. They risked everything for the chance to live as full citizens, educate their children, own land, and make a good living-all of which they felt they stood a better chance to do outside the United States, despite their newfound freedom. Why did they leave so soon after the dream of emancipation had finally been realized? And what happened when they ultimately disembarked in West Africa? Out of Virginia tells their story.

In this deeply researched and powerfully written book, Joe Stinnett explores the complex motivations and circumstances that compelled hundreds of Black Virginians to leave the United States and recounts in vivid detail the world they encountered and how they fared after their arrival in Liberia. It also demonstrates in a way few books have done before the local, grassroots nature of the expatriation movement in nineteenth-century America. Theologies of Remembering reveals how Indonesia's two largest Muslim groups, Nahdlatul Ulama and Muhammadiyah-self-identifying as respectively traditionalist and modernist-actively engage memory as a framework for theological thought and practice. By reimagining their pasts to respond to new contexts, they articulate what it means to be a traditionalist or a modernist in the present and imagine possibilities for the future. Verena Meyer draws on interviews with group members, Islamic intellectual and narrative traditions, and critical theory to show that processes of remembering facilitate manifestations of the divine that destabilize binaries between the historical and transhistorical as well as linear understandings of temporality. Observing how constructions of the past are called into the service of sometimes conflicting demands, she argues against the pervasive idea that Islamic modernities have lost their tolerance for ambiguity and paradox. Tensions among incommensurable memories are generative for articulating elusive theological insights and complex positionalities among both traditionalists and modernists, prompting us to rethink these familiar distinctions in modern identity politics.

This book examines merchant networks from the unique perspective of moving backward in time from a specific outcome-the founding of an American commission house in Brazil in the early 1800s-to uncover a century-and-a-half's worth of the transnational networking that led to its existence.

Individuals, their networks, and the times in which they lived constitute this study's methodological framework. Navigating complex genealogical pathways along four generations of a Huguenot family, originally of Chatellerault, reveals a continuity of long-distance, private merchant networks based primarily, but not exclusively, on kinship connections among diasporic Huguenot, Walloon, Flemish, Dutch, and German Calvinists, and notably symbiotic interactions with Portuguese Jews. This saga features many other Atlantic world locations including London, Amsterdam, Antwerp, Lisbon, Hamburg, Bremen, New York, and Pernambuco. The Pernambuco firm constituted an early fixed platform for New York, New England, and Mid-Atlantic merchants to access Brazilian markets. Concurrently, other American houses at Bahia, Rio de Janeiro, Montevideo, and Buenos Aires collaboratively networked to promote common interests. Revealing these evolving connections adds to our relatively insufficient knowledge of the Western Hemisphere's role in globalization processes.

Egypt's central position in the Middle East made it enviable among leading imperialist powers, with competition unfolding across cultural, diplomatic, and economic spheres. Furthermore, the Egyptian case is of exceptional interest within the region because of the interplay of several countries and numerous colonies of foreigners. The Italian community, second in number only to the Greek, was deeply integrated in the Egyptian economy and society, yet existing historiography has largely overlooked the consequences of this multinational coexistence.

This book examines Italian economic initiatives in Egypt from the late nineteenth century to the Second World War, focusing in particular on the banking sector as the cornerstone of Italy's economic strategy, both as a driver of investment and as a key instrument for broader economic expansion. Drawing on largely unpublished banking and diplomatic sources, the book traces the history of Italian banks in Egypt, from the first venture established in Alexandria in 1887 to the arrival of major Italian institutions in the early twentieth century. It explores both the ambitions and failures of Italian economic interests in a rapidly changing international context, exploring relationships between Western powers and Egyptian society during a period when growing nationalism would eventually force Britain to recognize Egyptian independence. It investigates projects by major Italian banks and the resident Italian community, analysing their links with other foreign colonies and the indigenous population.

Examining the evolution of South African activists' attitude toward the state of Israel

In recent decades, scholars and activists have increasingly drawn on the language of apartheid to describe the sociopolitical situation in Israel and Palestine. In South Africa today, Israel is notorious for its collaboration with the former white minority regime. This prevailing association, however, belies a more complex relationship between radical South Africans and the state of Israel that existed from the 1940s to the 1960s. During these years, Israel and Zionism divided opinion within South Africa's anti-apartheid movement.

Shifting Solidarities traces the transition among anti-apartheid activists from support for a Jewish state in 1948 to anti-Zionist and pro-Palestinian stances by the 1970s, showing how various ideologies-from Trotskyism to Pan-Africanism-shaped changing attitudes over time. Both an intellectual and a diplomatic history, the book illustrates how for several decades many South African radicals thought of Israel as a potential ally and admired its struggle for independence and postindependence achievements, but eventually came to see it as an apartheid-like state perpetuating the same kinds of injustices they had confronted for years.

This volume brings together established scholars and early-career researchers to foreground African contributions to labour studies. Spanning historical and contemporary developments, it examines youth employment, gendered labour, migration, informality, labour politics and emerging forms of work across the continent.

Over the first two decades of the twenty-first century-a period marked by profound global transformations and recurrent crises for many Latin American economies-two countries appeared to stand out for their sustained growth and notable improvements in social indicators: Bolivia and Peru. Despite divergent policy orientations, income derived from the large-scale exploitation of natural resources became the central pillar of economic growth in both countries. This book explores the political economy of Bolivia and Peru by situating their development trajectories within the changing global context of the twenty-first century and argues that the recent boom represents not a structural break, but rather a renewed phase of a long-standing extractivist accumulation pattern dating back to the colonial period.

The book examines why, despite having formally escaped colonial rule almost two centuries ago-and notwithstanding an unusually favorable international environment-both Bolivia and Peru remain highly dependent on primary commodity exports. Drawing on a comparative framework that combines world-systems analysis and political settlements theory, it assesses how global economic pressures were mediated through distinct domestic coalitions, institutions, and strategies of rent distribution. While national policies to overcome natural-resource dependence differed markedly in discourse and design, the analysis shows that neither country succeeded in fundamentally transforming its position within the global economy. Instead, the underlying pattern of surplus extraction from peripheral economies by core actors persists, albeit through reconfigured mechanisms.

Far from the Model Minority centers the voices of five undocumented and mixed-status Chinese immigrant families in New York City and their sending communities in Fuzhou, China. Challenging dominant narratives about Chinese Americans and the model-minority myth, these families have experienced multigenerational exclusion from educational pathways and developed mobility strategies focused on attaining "face."

In China, low social standing led them to prioritize immigration and remittance work over education, as overseas success became the primary way to garner face. Yet in the United States, undocumented status and poverty created new barriers to their and their children's acculturation, and the intersection of undocumented life and the culture of remittances often undermined the intended face gain for families back home and reinforced social stagnation. Based on four years of ethnographic research, Jia-Lin Liu's work explores how these transnational families respond to enduring structural exclusions by reimagining achievement and dignity across borders.

Entering its second decade, the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) has shifted toward a more people-centred orientation, emphasizing cultural interaction, human connectivity, environmental sustainability, and digital integration. Wealth inequality is both extreme and persistent across much of the world, yet it remains poorly understood relative to income inequality and poverty alleviation. Bringing together original research on Brazil, India, and South Africa, this volume examines the processes through which elite groups accumulate and maintain disproportionate control over assets - through historically embedded social hierarchies, institutional arrangements, and political-economic processes. These middle-income, semi-industrialised societies combine extreme wealth with persistent poverty, making them revealing sites for analysing how inequality is actively produced, not merely inherited.

Across nine chapters, the book traces the historical formation of wealth shaped by colonial legacies, racial and caste hierarchies, land regimes, and state formation, before analysing contemporary processes of elite continuities and reproduction. These include financialisation, asset ownership, legal and regulatory frameworks, urban development, and corporate control. Rather than treating elites as a numerical category (the "top 1%"), the contributors analyse elites as historically constituted and institutionally embedded actors whose wealth and power are produced within existing accumulation regimes, and who in turn act to stabilise, adapt, and extend those regimes over time.

The volume develops a relational, comparative political economy of wealth inequality, showing that processes illuminated in the Global South also deepen analysis of wealth concentration globally. Demographic Anxieties examines everyday encounters between Palestinian patients and Jewish Israeli doctors and argues that, alongside spectacular and disastrous forms of Israeli state violence, we must also consider more quotidian forms of surveillance and control. Written from an anticolonial feminist perspective, it asks what Palestine, as a site of knowledge production, enables, complicates, or demands from a transnational feminist approach to reproductive justice.

Songdo, South Korea, is one of the earliest and most ambitious smart city projects. Mythical narratives have painted it as a promised land of the future where the problems and struggles of the present have been efficiently transcended-or concealed-by technology. In City in a Future Tense, Chamee Yang interrogates these myths and traces Songdo's story to show how it emerged out of a complex interplay of governmental rationality, cultural aspirations, and collective anxiety about the future. Drawing on Korea's developmental past and relentless drive toward a technological future, visions of freedom, security, and connectivity converged with new techniques of governance to shape a distinctive urban form. By challenging the reduction of the smart city to a mere government policy, stage of capitalism, or ready-made solution to urban problems, Yang offers a new way of understanding the smart city as the contingent outcome of multiple, competing futures-a reality that is still pending.
