There is a long history of sororities such as Alpha Kappa Alpha (AKA) and Delta Sigma Theta (Delta) participating in activism and social justice efforts-from the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s to Kamala Harris's recent political campaigns. But radical movements like Black Lives Matter have posed more challenging questions for these organizations.

This volume traces the experiences of seven African American abolitionists who travelled to Ireland during the tumultuous years after the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850: Eli Stokes, William Allen, Isaac Davison, William Mitchell, William Troy, James Cheeney Thompson, and Robert Maxwell Johnson.

Despite their diverse life stories, many of these visitors shared deeply held evangelical beliefs, with the ambition to save souls being central to their mission. This aspiration resonated in an era when Christianity and civilisation were widely conflated. Although this book focuses on these seven men - clergy, academics, lecturers - it also examines their interactions with other activists, authors, and actors, and how they negotiated the complex intersections of politics, culture, religion, race, ethnicity, physical appearance and gender. Moreover, through the involvement of Canada and Africa, notably Liberia, they gave the abolition movement a transnational presence. Each of these abolitionists attracted extensive press coverage during their time overseas, and three published successful biographies, yet they have largely faded from view in the historiography. Nonetheless, individually and collectively their contributions to ending enslavement and to Black advancement were considerable.

Germany's past in relation to Blackness is often dismissed as peripheral: its colonial enterprise lasted merely three decades, and, until the end of World War Two, the Black population in Germany was small. Yet debates about Blackness, especially in the 1920s, were part of wider discussions in which social and political problems were articulated through race-problems the Nazis later claimed to have answers for.

Through a deep exploration of Germany's imperial experiences in Africa, Stefan Ihrig reveals that ideas about Blackness played a significant role in German history, even when there were few Black people in Germany or, as under Hitler, Africa largely fell outside the regime's predatory gaze. This book explores ethnogenesis, integration in host societies and bonding in the Indian diaspora of Girmitiyas - a population of over 1.3 million British-Indian indentured labourers recruited in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries
to work in plantation colonies across Asia, Africa and the Caribbean. Focusing on Girmitiya communities in Suriname, Guyana, Mauritius and Fiji, it examines both the similarities and divergences in their ethnic formation, integration into host societies, and diasporic bonding. Examining the power of testimonios in illuminating political injustice in Latin America from the Cold War to the present.

During the Cold War, testimonio emerged as a powerful genre of political nonfiction in Latin America. Artists created first-person narratives of censorship and state violence, highlighting broader circumstances of oppression carried out by local right-wing oligarchies in collusion with the US empire. Decolonial Witnessing explores the continuing vitality of testimonio in the twenty-first century, as it has evolved into narratives contesting neoliberal dispossession and dispoasability.

Healing emerges not solely within religious borders but within contested spaces where identity, belonging, and survival are continually renegotiated. Often, people blend, cross, and draw strength from diverse practices, relationships, and lived experiences.

This book uses a Lefebvrian spatial framework to explore the 'production' of Ritsona refugee camp in Central Greece. Lefebvre's multifaceted and reflexive conceptualisation of space allows for a macro analysis that locates the camp within the global structure and layout of society, but simultaneously facilitates a more localised exploration of space as an interplay between people, social practices and the built environment of the material camp.
The first half of the book contextualises the camp and examines the broader processes and structures implicated in its production, exploring the emergence of the camp as an idea, and of the birth, development and proliferation of the material camp as a technology of control. The second half of the book, meanwhile, engages with the production of camp space at the level of the everyday and from the perspective of camp residents themselves, and is structured around concepts of domestic, neighbourhood and public space.

Major cities in China have witnessed unprecedented expansion towards outer suburban areas through various forms of mixed-use, clustered development. The peripheries of Chinese cities often comprise diverse residential communities, such as urban villages, workers' dormitories, privatised work-unit compounds, and new commodity housing estates, where local residents and migrants from different backgrounds coexist in a transition period. Chinese migrants now have more housing choices within such areas, but residence in specific neighbourhoods can affect social status, thereby impacting migrants' pathways to integration into the city. This book offers a detailed examination of migrants' integration processes through these peri-urban neighbourhoods.

Immigrants in the United States are overrepresented among essential workers in agro-food production. In the dairy industry alone, immigrants constitute 51 percent of the labor force and produce 80 percent of the country's milk. Whereas most food production in the United States today is controlled by large corporations, at least 97 percent of US dairy farms are family owned and operated. Based on five years of ethnographic research in "Dairy City," Kansas, Alisa Garni tells the story of people who traded suits and office jobs abroad for dangerous work on US dairy farms, the white dairy farmers who rely on them to keep their family-owned operations afloat, and the rural communities that were dying before recent immigrants arrived.
