Why are bilateral migration agreements (BMAs) concluded the way they are? "Of Times Ontologically Insecure" combines the newest datasets on both bilateral labor agreements (BLAs) and other types of BMAs to get at the question in how far ontological security seeking behavior explains the conclusion of certain types of BMAs.
Research to date has held that BMAs are signed to avoid costly domestic political debates and pass specific migration policies while avoiding institutional grid-lock. However, these accounts rarely take into consideration the variance in types of legal instruments concluded. Positing that the conclusion of BMAs cannot solely be explained by rational interest-based arguments, this study turns to Ontological Security Studies to analyze the cognitive underpinnings of immigration policy-making on the international level.
The author analyzes how the interaction between domestic coalitions and the government in the United States led to the conclusion of specific types of BMAs with Cuba, Mexico and Guatemala at specific points in time between 1990 and 2020. Anxieties over a border in crisis and a highly polarized domestic public, have led the US to increasingly become ontologically insecure and thus, conclude informal agreements with externalized measures of border and immigration control.

This book offers a comprehensive exploration of the multilingual linguistic landscape in Taoyuan City, Taiwan, focusing on the impact of new immigrants and the diverse range of languages they speak, across urban and peripheral areas. It examines the city's transition from a predominantly monolingual or bilingual Chinese-English signage environment to a vibrant multilingual one shaped by Chinese, English, Japanese, Korean and Southeast Asian languages. Muslims in Milwaukee explores the everyday lives, identities, and activism of Muslims in a midsized Midwestern city. Milwaukee is one of America's most segregated cities, yet within its boundaries, a vibrant Muslim community is reshaping narratives and embodied practices of belonging, civic engagement, and urban placemaking. While considerable scholarship on Muslim Americans has concentrated on larger metropolitan centers like New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago, or on Detroit's historic Arab neighborhoods, this book turns our attention to an understudied city where Muslim communities are small but rapidly growing, and where their experiences unfold within distinct local landscapes of race, segregation, and opportunity.

Drawing on over a decade of ethnographic fieldwork, surveys, and extensive interviews with community members, students, artists, activists, and leaders, the authors examine how local political, economic, and historical structures shape Muslim American experiences and civic participation, situating their analysis within the dual dynamics of belonging on one hand and exclusion and discrimination on the other.

The rise in antisemitic incidents across Europe has reached a new dimension through recent migration from predominantly Muslim countries. In public and media discourses, the role of imams and practicing Muslims has repeatedly come under scrutiny. This book explores the construction of 'languaged' and professional subjectivities in the context of refugee support work in Austria. The author focuses on how transformation processes play out in counsellors' and volunteer interpreters' conceptions of themselves as professionals and speaking subjects when confronted with the political and ethical dilemmas of an increasingly precarised work context. Latinas represent one of the fastest-growing populations in the US, yet Latina faculty in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) careers remain underrepresented. Advancing Latinas in STEM Academic Careers shares ideas, strategies, and best practices in the following areas: (1) work-life issues, policies/practices, mentoring, and climate that affect the pathways/pipelines, recruitment, retention, and advancement/leadership of Latinas in academic STEM careers; (2) challenges and opportunities for STEM Latinas across faculty rank and within and outside academia; (3) best practices and lessons learned in the recruitment and advancement of STEM Latinas; (4) intersectionality issues, particularly those related to gender and ethnic diversity in STEM; and (5) pipeline/pathways for advancing Latinas in STEM.

Academic research in STEM is often conducted without the perspectives of members of underrepresented groups, including Latinas. An increase in the number and representation of underrepresented minorities and women in STEM has the capacity to build more informed public policy formulation, discussion, and implementation. Having an inclusive STEM faculty that advances Latinas exposes students to a range of perspectives and experiences, counters stereotypes students might have about Latinas and BIPOC populations, strengthens the pipeline for Latina/o students, and prepares non-Latina/o students to work productively in an increasingly diverse and competitive workforce. Challenges simplified discourses that describe Chinese as the next global language.

This book analyzes the multilingual and multidialectal practices of Chinese Americans in Los Angeles, a city with a Chinese diasporic population of around 500,000. It describes the contact between different Chineses in a diasporic setting, illustrating how non-Putonghua features are made use of to form distinct identities and speech communities. It demonstrates that localized conceptions of 'Chineseness' hold greater sociolinguistic significance than the transnational narratives of a unified global Chinese. The author argues that a homogeneous global Chinese is unlikely to arise as, analogous to 'World Englishes', different degrees of divergence are found in Chineses around the world. This book will appeal to scholars interested in Chinese language variation, translanguaging practices, language ideology and identity.

Zhongping Chen examines the origins, rise, and reform of the Cantonese-dominated Chinese diaspora in Canada between 1788 and 1898. Combining a diasporic approach with both qualitative and quantitative analyses of Chinese and English documents, including previously untapped archival records of secret societies, community organizations, and family businesses, this book reveals the transnational mobility of Chinese migrants and the expansion of their migration network across southern China, the American West, and Pacific Canada. Chen especially highlights the cross-cultural development of Chinese migration networks through interactions with white and Indigenous peoples as well as Western culture ranging from racism and settler colonialism to constitutionalism. The book features the first intensive examination of Chinese migrants' engagement in the transpacific Anglo-American fur trade, the gold rushes spreading from California to British Columbia, the construction of the Canadian Pacific Railway, and community reforms across North American Chinatowns. Through innovative theoretical approaches and meticulous analysis of archival sources, Chen demonstrates how the Cantonese-dominated diaspora in Canada exerted profound but long-neglected and under-researched influence on sociopolitical changes in Qing China, Canadian society, and the Chinese communities across the Pacific Rim, including American Chinatowns, going beyond the nation-state frameworks in Chinese Canadian and Chinese American studies.

This book offers a rich and innovative study of multiracial social worlds in early-twentieth-century London, Liverpool, and Hong Kong - three port cities linked by their importance to global British shipping networks and circuits of Chinese migration. In these cities, Chinese, Black, South Asian and European people came together to foster multiracial communities which have been largely forgotten, remembered only through sensationalist fictions that reflected white anxieties about racial mixing. Nadine Attewell considers these vibrant multiracial worlds through the eyes of those who knew them best: people of mixed Chinese descent, for whom interracial intimacies were features of everyday life.

Mobilizing a wide range of archival materials, including photographs, community and family histories, and wartime intelligence reports, Attewell reconstructs the social experiences of people like Vera Leung, a working-class woman of Irish and Chinese descent growing up in Liverpool's interwar Chinatown, and Percy Chang, a Jamaican man of Chinese and African descent with a wide social network in Hong Kong. Rather than centering identity as the focus of mixed-race people's struggles, she asks what they did and with whom. Drawing on queer and feminist scholarship and integrating British, Asian, and diasporic histories, Attewell presents new ways of thinking about the everyday meanings of interracial intimacy, and practices of relation and survival under global conditions of colonial capitalist rule.
