This book explores how adoption evolved in Germany's turbulent twentieth century, experiencing both drastic changes and unexpected continuities.

The history of adoption in twentieth-century Germany has been dramatic and complex. The Weimar Republic's assumption of responsibility for children's welfare in 1922 empowered state authorities to regulate private adoption agencies, to set up their own public adoption offices, and to require prospective adoptive parents to prove their competence to social workers. These policies subsequently allowed nazis, communists, and democrats to frame adoption policies to match their social and political goals and values. Differing conceptions of the best interests of the child and the family, redefinitions of "family", changing criteria for a family's or child's suitability for adoption, abduction, international adoption, and even European integration all came into play, empowering authorities to define, regulate and sometimes even forbid adoptive relationships to that end. The evolution of German adoption and German society reflected each other, showing both fundamental changes and unexpected continuities, and deepening our understanding of both.

A teacher and minister, Thomas Bog Slade, was a prominent advocate for education regardless of gender or class in nineteenth-century Georgia, altering the lives of many and the future of the state.

Thomas Bog Slade was one of the most important reformers in the history of education in nineteenth-century Georgia, yet remains little known to modern students of the subject, especially regarding his significance to the education of women. Born in North Carolina, Slade lived the bulk of his life in Georgia, first as an attorney and then as a servant of the public working for the common good. He founded two schools for girls in Clinton and Columbus, Georgia, was one of the first faculty members of Wesleyan College, in Macon, and led the earliest association of Georgia teachers, campaigning for tax-supported public schools that would be free to all Georgia children regardless of gender and class. Slade was also a Baptist minister who lived the values he professed. He resigned a job as professor over denominational sectarianism but then withdrew from being too exclusive in his own Baptist denomination. This is a story about female education and its connection to the religious history of Georgia as demonstrated through one man, his family, and the thousands of young women from across the country whose lives were changed and went on to continue Slade's passion and spirit for education into their own families and further generations.

This book draws on feminist and more-than-human approaches to re-imagine gender in the early childhood workforce.

Debates, policies and practices around gender in the early childhood workforce have predominantly focused on the under-representation of men and the recuperative outcomes promised through the inclusion of men. Mohandas' research is, however, concerned with the ways a gendered workforce can be re-imagined when the boundaries of research are stretched beyond mere human inclusion and attention is paid to ordinary objects and unassuming relations that constitute everyday life in the nursery. Through an attunement to the atmospheric, a gendered workforce is re-conceptualised as gendered forces that work across bodies (human and nonhuman), spaces, places and temporalities. Through vignettes from the nursery, Mohandas makes visible how each encounter is composed of gendered and more-than-gendered (i.e. racialised, classed and casted) forces, relations, stories and worlds. By employing feminist theorisations that foreground materiality, affect, discourse, place and temporalities, the book offers new ways to deepen conversations and practices around gender in the early childhood workforce.

This project analyzes the works of canonical "preacher-poets" such as George Herbert, John Donne, and John Bunyan, alongside the devotional writings of less-studied women, including Anna Walker, Katherine Austen, Margaret Hoby, and Mary Rich. Importantly, the sermon genre also offers insights into the textual contributions of women in early modern England. This book draws on the rich historical record of the Russian royal court to demonstrate how green spaces have been used as an instrument of diplomatic and political influence. Ekaterina Heath convincingly argues that parks like Pavlovsk are a fruitful new primary source, here revealing the previously obscured evidence of women's political activities. In 19th-century Russia, green spaces gave women voice and agency, frequently taken away from them by the patriarchal power structures. Women, Green Spaces and the Politics of Empowerment in Imperial Russia challenges the preceding narratives of these structures as being solely masculine. It also argues for the need to consider consorts in the analysis of political life at the Russian court. Their soft power strategies were deployed through their gardens, the main tool of political propaganda in the long 18th century.

Ekaterina Heath discusses Pavlovsk's use for building relationships, promoting virtues, mounting political arguments, and writing Russian history. She explores the strategies used by Empress Maria Fedorovna to influence Catherine II and Paul I to maintain her access to power in a precarious political environment. Heath then goes on to analyse Dowager Empress Maria Fedorovna's use of her garden to grow her power after the death of her husband, Paul I, and her son Alexander I's ascension to the throne.
