Preacher-Poets demonstrates that early modern sermons had a larger impact on early modern literary texts and culture than previously assumed, analyzing the role of gender in theological and non-theological texts. This book argues that the sermon genre was a critical force in early modern culture by illuminating its role in shaping literary texts and examining the role of gender in order to connect sermons to the broader early modern cultural discourse.

This project analyzes the works of canonical "preacher-poets" such as George Herbert, John Donne, and John Bunyan, alongside the devotional writings of less-studied women, including Anna Walker, Katherine Austen, Margaret Hoby, and Mary Rich. Importantly, the sermon genre also offers insights into the textual contributions of women in early modern England. Women's sermon notes and devotional writings often replicated the sermon genre's features, challenging assumptions that Protestant theology uniformly perpetuated patriarchal norms. Rather, sermons provided a framework within which women engaged actively with Protestantism. This book also further situates sermons within the broader performative landscape by connecting them to the works of Ben Jonson and William Shakespeare, revealing the sermon genre's cultural impact in seventeenth-century England.

While the early modern sermon has gained some traction in literary studies, it has yet to be discussed at length as a major influence on early modern literature and culture. This book should be of interest to scholars, graduate students, and undergraduate students of early modern literature, history, theology, and gender studies.

A groundbreaking biography of Margaret Bondfield, the remarkable political pioneer and working-class woman who rose to become the first female Cabinet Minister in the 1929 Labour government.

Rising from modest semi-rural, semi-industrial origins in the West Country, and years of apprenticeship in shops in Brighton, Bondfield became the first woman to chair the TUC, one of the first female Labour MPs, the first woman to hold government office (1924) and in 1929, the first female Cabinet Minister.

Most of her life was lived in the public eye, but what lay behind her public achievements? In this remarkable book, historian Nan Sloane looks beyond the public facade to reveal Bondfield's hidden personal story, from her complicated personality with a difficult background, a private life which was either secret or non-existent, and a lifelong struggle with imposter syndrome.

Drawing on newly uncovered archival material, including Bondfield's own diaries, this is a fresh and vitally needed reassessment of Margaret Bondfield's influential life and contribution. A vital and timely biography that restores Bondfield to her rightful and prominent place in British political history.

Gender and Policy Analysis: An Interdisciplinary Approach presents a groundbreaking interdisciplinary exploration of how gender policy is shaped, implemented, and challenged in a rapidly evolving global landscape. The volume draws together leading scholars from sociology, political science, economics, law, and other fields to analyze the persistent barriers and emerging opportunities for gender equity. It addresses the challenges of integrating gender perspectives into policy-making, emphasizing the importance of intersectionality, representation, legal frameworks, and economic empowerment. Through focused case studies-from women's labor force participation gender balance in civil aviation, to the gender pay gap in sports and barriers for women in STEM and renewable energy-the book illuminates the nuanced realities faced by women and marginalized groups across diverse societies. It also examines recent legal developments, such as the 2025 U.S. executive order defining gender in binary terms, revealing the contentious debates at the heart of contemporary gender policy. Aimed at academics, policymakers, and advocates, this volume offers practical insights and innovative approaches for designing and implementing inclusive, forward-thinking gender policies aligned with global Sustainable Development Goals. In doing so, it fosters a comprehensive understanding of gender equity as both an ethical imperative and a catalyst for sustainable societal advancement.

This eminently timely volume offers a critical examination of the educational experiences of white working-class boys, interrogating the impact of neoliberal education policies, hegemonic masculinity and the increasing influence of digital culture on how they engage, or disengage, with schooling.

Foregrounding the voices of young men compiled over five years through participant observation, semi-structured interviews, and a novel reflexive ethnographic data saturation cycle, the book challenges dominant narratives surrounding young, white working-class boys in education, positioning their disengagement as an outcome of intersecting structural inequalities, policy frameworks and shifting cultural narratives. As a result, the book explores how emerging hyper-masculine digital subcultures and a lack of school engagement have led many to seek status outside of formal education. Particularly focused on policy recommendations, the book speaks to international debates such as those in Australia, the United States and parts of Europe, around neoliberalism, educational exclusion and marginalised youth, offering comparative insights and global relevance despite its English empirical setting.

Offering a fresh, intersectional analysis of masculinity, class and educational inequality, the book will be of direct relevance to scholars, researchers and postgraduates in the field of the sociology of education, research methods in education, neoliberalism and education policy more broadly. Policy makers concerned with the influence of social media on young men in schools will also find value in the volume.

Digital Feminist Activism in Turkey explores how feminist movements navigate the promises and pressures of digital politics in an increasingly authoritarian environment.

Across the globe, feminist activists have turned to digital platforms to mobilise supporters, expose violence, challenge misogynistic policies, and build transnational solidarities. Focusing on Turkey, this book approaches digital feminist activism through the lens of labour, foregrounding the often-invisible emotional, organisational, and technological work that sustains online resistance. It examines how activists communicate, organise, and create counter-publics under conditions of censorship, surveillance, and political repression. By analysing the structural constraints and strategic adaptations that shape feminist digital engagement, this study highlights both the empowering potential and the exploitative dimensions of digital activism.

This book will appeal to scholars and students of gender studies, social movements, media and communication, and Middle East politics, as well as activists and practitioners interested in the evolving relationship between feminism and digital labour.

Exploring Death, Diaspora, and Gender in the Coptic Community: Going Home explores the dynamics of death and gender in diasporic Coptic communities. Theologically and socially, the Coptic community is obsessed with death-incorporating numerous musings on the afterlife into music, teaching, ritual, and art. This accompanies a fixation on martyrdom that pervades Coptic culture. Additionally, all of these aspects of Coptic life are deeply gendered in ways that communicate a theology of gender that bleeds into the world of the living. The author explores Coptic death rituals, paradigms of martyrdom, and representations of contemporary sainthood, providing an analysis of their impacts on Coptic women and queer Copts. Ultimately, these death practices reinforce theologies of gender and the body that promote problematic gender hierarchies.

The book uncovers the untold stories of Korean women performers who navigated successive waves of conflict as cultural laborers in military entertainment, offering insight into the intersection of war, gender, and culture in East Asia.

Imperial Entertainers: Korean Women Performers from Military to Global Stages, 1937-75 uncovers the untold stories of Korean women performers who navigated successive waves of conflict - from the Pacific War to the Korean and Vietnam Wars - as cultural laborers in military entertainment. The author traces how these women became central figures in a dynamic entertainment market that emerged across the Asia-Pacific region amid U.S. Military expansion. Through extensive archival research and intimate interviews with former performers, this book reveals how these women skillfully balanced multiple roles: representing South Korea's new identity as a free nation, performing "Americanness" for military audiences, and pursuing their own personal and professional aspirations. From their early performances in EUSAK (Eight United States Army Korea) clubs to their later success in Vietnam War-era entertainment circuits, these entertainers formed a unique labor pool that circulated throughout the militarized zones of Asia. While their performances served American military interests and Cold War cultural diplomacy, these women were not merely passive participants in U.S. hegemony. Instead, they actively shaped their careers, challenged cultural boundaries, and carved out spaces for individual agency within the constraints of military entertainment. By examining these entertainers as cultural laborers with transnational military networks, the author offers new insights into the intersection of war, gender, and cultural labor in East Asia.

This handbook explores Buddhist women's lives and agency from ancient times to the present in Japan.

The book examines lives and representations of Buddhist women by utilizing a thematic approach, with each theme representing a network of interrelated gender roles, norms and hierarchies that determine the conditions under which women "lived" and "live" Buddhism. The contributions highlight what it meant and means to be Buddhist and a woman in the context of gendered power-structures as expressed in the realms of spatial organization, medicine and healthcare, music and sound, embodied gender and sexuality, and visual and material culture.

Exploring a topic which has previously been under-represented in scholarship, this will be a valuable resource to students and scholars of religious, Japanese and gender studies.

Queer Trauma in Children's Anglophone Literature and Cinema examines how contemporary English-language novels and films represent trauma in queer childhood and adolescence.

Drawing on Ann Cvetkovich's concept of queer trauma, the book challenges pathologizing models that frame trauma as a private wound. Instead, it reveals its cultural, political, and intersectional production through family expectations, social pressures, bullying, discrimination, and the policing of gender and sexuality. Through close readings across twenty-first-century literature and cinema - including widely taught works such as A Little Life and films like Just Charlie - the study foregrounds quieter, cumulative harms that shape early queer life while tracing how suffering, survival, chosen ties, creative expression, and community-based healing intersect. It develops an accessible framework, "queer trauma of early lives," that enables readers to understand these narratives without reducing queer youth to clinical case studies.

Queer Trauma in Children's Anglophone Literature and Cinema is ideal for undergraduate and graduate students, as well as researchers in gender studies, literary and cultural studies, film and media studies, and childhood studies.

Ifi Adadiume contrasts the collectivist, humanist culture of traditional African matriarchal heritage with the corrupt and oppressive culture of the imperialism that is the heritage of contemporary elite-led women's organizations. Amadiume examines the activities of such organizations in Nigeria, making comparisons with those in Britain and South Africa as well as in international movements; looking at Beijing International Women's Conferences, she explores internationalism as an instrument of class reproduction.

Here Amadiume provides a detailed account of the structures and workings of local government in Nigeria and Britain as she raises theoretical and policy issues about civic groups, civil society and the nature of the late twentieth-century state. Finally, she draws lessons from her own experiences working in local government to suggest measures for true gender equity and the democratisation of politics in our increasingly multicultural and multiethnic societies.

Bringing Amadiume's groundbreaking insights to a new generation of readers, this Essential Amadiume edition asks hard questions of modern feminist movements that are still too-often sidelined in Western-centric debates.

Across Polish film history, the contributions of women have often been overshadowed by their male counterparts. While figures like Wanda Jakubowska, Barbara Sass-Zdort, and Agnieszka Holland have garnered recognition, many others remain marginalized and their work alarmingly under-researched. This open access book redresses this imbalance, providing a comprehensive analysis of women's engagement in Polish cinema from as early as the 1930s up to present day.

The volume provides an in-depth exploration of the careers and achievements of women both in front of and behind the camera. These include actresses such as Nora Ney, Jadwiga Smosarska, and Lena Zelichowska; producers like Maria Hirszbein; directors such as Maria Zmarz-Koczanowicz, Krystyna Janda, Natalia Koryncka-Gruz, Urszula Urbaniak, and Izabella Cywinskal; as well as scriptwriters, editors, and amateur filmmakers. In doing so, it challenges traditional film historiography, uncovering the systemic neglect and patriarchal structures that have long suppressed women's contributions to the industry.

The case studies presented also revise the Western perspective on Polish and Eastern European cinema, challenging the misplaced notion that it is primarily a politically engaged, male-dominated auteur cinema. In doing so, the volume initiates the long-overdue process of rewriting the vernacular history of Polish cinema.

This book explores the intersections of gender, religion, ethnicity, and class in the fragile borderlands of Jammu, Kashmir, and Ladakh against the backdrop of the abrogation of Article 370 in August 2019. It contributes to existing research in the fields of gender, intersectionality, borderland studies, and peacebuilding by focusing on women - an extremely vulnerable group - particularly during situations of conflict. Drawing on primary and secondary resources, this study is largely based on field research - including during the launch of Operation Sindoor and post-Galwan militarisation of Eastern Ladakh's border villages - in the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir.

The book takes an interdisciplinary approach, incorporating the voices of women from Jammu, Kashmir, and Ladakh. Through narrative inquiry, it features in-depth personal interviews and case stories, providing a well-rounded gendered perspective of the region.

This book will be useful to the scholars, students, and teachers of political science, sociology, anthropology, economics, and development studies. It will also be an indispensable resource for scholars of peace and conflict studies as well as practitioners of peacebuilding. In addition, it would be of interest to general readers following the developments in the erstwhile state post-abrogation.

Gendered dynamics have always been crucial in determining the experience and patterns of migration. The roles and responsibilities assigned to men and women within households and communities, created by cultural norms, social hierarchies, and economic systems, have dramatically influenced their experiences, vulnerabilities, and contributions during these movements. This book examines the intricate relationship between gender, migration, and climate change to shed light on one of the most important socio-economic issues of the 21st century. It explores the gendered aspects of migration brought on by climate change, recognising the vulnerabilities, adaptability, and resilience of women, girls, and marginalised genders in the face of climate-related disruption.

The book looks at how migration brought on by climate change alters the socio-economic environments of both sending and receiving groups. It focuses on how these changes either promote or impede social fairness by differentially affecting gender roles, economic opportunities, and access to resources. It looks at how migration fuelled by climate change exacerbates already-existing gender inequities, emphasising important issues like job accessibility, household and community decision-making authority, and the uneven cost of adjusting to economic and environmental shocks. Policy frameworks and tactics targeted at fostering gender-responsive resilience and advancing climate adaptation are assessed, acknowledging the pressing need for inclusive and equitable approaches.

By weaving together rigorous analysis, empirical case studies, and policy evaluation, the book encourages transformative solutions that promote equity, inclusivity, and sustainability. It invites scholars, researchers, and decision-makers to reimagine migration governance and climate adaptation strategies, ensuring that gender equity remains at the heart of global efforts to build a just and resilient future.

Are the growing numbers of superheroines we see on screen truly breaking boundaries and providing new models of female representation, or do they instead fall prey to the pitfalls of postfeminist representation and toxic fandom dynamics?
Lauryn Angel applies a critical feminist lens to the influx of female superheroes within the Marvel Cinematic Universe and DC Extended Universe and compares them to their comic book counterparts to interrogate both the promises and perils of this cinematic landscape and its fanbases.
Rather than promoting equity and diversity, Angel posits, many of these characters become stuck in the mire of one-dimensional tropes that perpetuate the idea that feminine experiences are one-size-fits-all. This inaccurate representation is compounded by toxic fans-also known as anti-fans-of the superhero genre who argue that any female superhero is nothing more than a cog in the "woke" agenda. Ultimately, Angel finds that the most positive representations also prompt the loudest outcry from anti-fans, further complicating the minefield of competing motivations around the prominence and accuracy of feminist representation in a postfeminist landscape.

This book examines the women whose contributions significantly shaped housing management, policy and design. It highlights how these women leveraged their experiences, opportunities, and, in some cases, social and economic advantage to promote progressive models of housing and community building. Their contributions extended beyond just improving housing. Their work created community, cultivated civic responsibility and demonstrated that housing was, and is, an important component of an equitable society.

Organized by housing models, the book places each woman within her historical context and explores how they navigated constraints to contribute to housing reform. This trajectory spans from Catharine Beecher's influential writings on domesticity in the 1850s, to Mary Gannon and Alice J. Hands founding their architecture firm in the 1890s, to Lillian Moller Gilbreth's scientific management and her development of the "kitchen triangle" in the 1920s. It continues through Catherine Bauer Wurster's central role in drafting the United States Housing Act of 1937, Hillevi Svedberg's collective housing designs in the 1940s, and Renee Gailhoustet's visionary planning of Ivry-sur-Seine in the 1960s and 70s, culminating with Catherine Furet's public housing work in the 1990s and early 2000s. Many of the women knew or directly influenced one another, yet their perspectives and methodologies often differed, reflecting the diverse ways in which women shaped housing.

By illuminating these pioneers' achievements, many of whom were underrecognized in their own time, this work offers a reappraisal of women's roles in shaping the housing environment. This book encourages readers to reconsider the history of housing, by looking at it through gender and interdisciplinary perspectives.

Queer Intersectionality is a comprehensive exploration of the complexities and diversities of the queer communities and their lived experiences in South Asia. The volume draws on a wide range of theoretical, cultural, and social perspectives while offering a critical analysis of how queer identities are shaped up and resisted in different regions and subregions of South Asia. The chapters explore not only the challenges faced by queer individuals but also their resilience, resistance, and creative strategies for survival and empowerment. By bringing together voices from activists, scholars, and community members, the book highlights the dynamism of queer intersectionality in South Asia and challenges the dominant narratives of sexuality and identity in the region. This open access book assembles geographically diverse analyses of case studies from around the world to demonstrate how women interact with global drivers of change to create new governance structures, subvert existing governance structures, or adapt their informal structures to reclaim their commons. Drawing upon case studies from Bangladesh, Peru, the United States, Tanzania and Kenya, and Chile, the book's authors address the question: How do women reclaim their culture and resources from the impacts of global change by enacting processes of formal and informal governance? The authors argue that women are essential actors in processes of both environmental and economic governance. Yet, their labor often goes unrecognized as power dynamics between and across genders shape access, control, and care of a resource or property and both state-level policymaking and international development frequently reinforce women's marginalization. However, women's work underpins economic, environmental, and community sustainability and they persist to overcome, subvert, or circumnavigate forms of enclosure in the commons. As both an ode to women's work and a call to policymakers and development agencies to recognize women's labor, this book illustrates how women draw upon knowledge, care, and culture to improve social, economic, and ecological well-being.

This open access book begins by setting out a conceptual, political, historical, and personal framework that serves to anchor the Mexican visual culture it goes on to address. To this end, it also provides a brief overview of feminist thinking from the late nineteenth century to the present day, which has nourished these visual artists. The notion of uprootedness runs through the entire work, as does the idea of nomadism and nomadic-critical subjects. Eli Bartra addresses loosely defined traditional, modern and contemporary art, including photography and film, as components of the visuality of this corner of the Global South. The book goes beyond recognised figures such as Frida Kahlo, who have dominated Mexico's visual culture almost exclusively, though it does not dismiss them. It thus offers a visual mosaic that presents the work of photographers, filmmakers and a few artists whose creativity has no qualms about crossing boundaries; one comes from China, another looks out over the Mediterranean, another is based in Guanajuato, another lives in Queretaro, and there is even a European who walks the desert in northern Mexico, unearthing wounds.

After the conclusion of the 36-year long civil war in Guatemala, a Commission for Historical Clarification (CEH) was established in order to clarify human rights violations which took place. This organisation recommended a process of public memorialization of the victims in coordination with civil society organizations. Memorialization of this kind took both formal and informal froms: murals and graffiti as well as museums and public shrines. Based on extensive fieldwork this book deploys visual methodology and feminist theory in order to assess these efforts of memorialization in a gendered context. Multiple sites of memorialization are examined in relation to female representation as well as women's political activism in the process of constructing public memory and performance. This study offers a landmark contribution to memorialization studies by examining such practices in the Guatemalan context.

Through African case studies, this book explores how gender and sexuality are articulated on social media.

While the representation of gender in mainstream media has been studied for many decades, this book fills a gap by focusing on social media platforms like Facebook, X, Instagram, and Tik Tok, and examining representation, commodification, and sexuality on these platforms. The contributors hold a mirror to society and reflect on the issues in our current world of empowerment, where sexuality and gender preferences are respected, and sexual rights are protected by constitutions in progressive democracies. Through their research, Shepherd Mpofu, Kealeboga Aiseng, and the contributors strive to alter the male gaze, commercial benefits of commodification, and African culture as benefited and influenced by patriarchal societies.

This book examines the Court Beguinages, a fascinating group of semi-monastic female communities that were endemic to cities of the Southern Low Countries from the thirteenth century into the twentieth.

Their members, called Beguines, played fundamental social and religious roles in their communities, and they also became major patrons of art and architecture, building vast complexes and filling them with paintings, sculptures, prints, textiles, and all sorts of other decorative objects. As the first comprehensive and primary source-driven account of Court Beguinage visual culture, this study explores the historical importance of these institutions and reveals how the Beguines used buildings and images to support devotional practice, shape public perception, raise funds, and negotiate power relationships during the Counter-Reformation.

Unconventual Women in the Habsburg Low Countries is intended for scholars and students of early modern history, art and architectural history, cultural history, religious history, and women's and gender studies.

Winner of the Choice Outstanding Academic Book of the Year

In 1987, more than a decade before the dawn of queer theory, Ifi Amadiume wrote Male Daughters, Female Husbands to critical acclaim. Here Amadiume boldly argues that the notion of gender, as constructed in Western feminist discourse, did not exist in Africa before the colonial imposition of a dichotomous understanding of sexual difference.

This new Essential Amadiume edition illustrates for a new generation of readers the specifically Western origins of the gender essentialisms to which much current gender theory reacts. In showing how those notions have been projected onto other cultures through colonialism, and in exploring traditional west African practices that conceive of gender otherwise, it re-opens other alternatives to them.

This book uncovers the history of exclusion and erasure of women's work within the Mumbai film industry and highlights the challenges women face at every stage of filmmaking, from pre-production to distribution.

Drawing on semistructured interviews with women and men working in the Mumbai film industry, as well as observations of industry events, film festivals, and film shoots, the book provides a comprehensive examination of the effects of streaming platforms on the creation and distribution of Hindi films made by women and about women. Through analysis of the obstacles and battles that a female filmmaker faces at every level, the author explores the factors that hinder women's entrance and tenure in the contemporary Mumbai film industry and the impact of streaming platforms on these barriers. In addition to this ethnographic research, the author employs close textual analysis of selected films to demonstrate how women's interventions in cinema function as acts of feminist epistemology, not only bringing new stories to life, but also transforming how films are made and how meaning is created.

This book will be of interest to scholars working on gender in Indian Cinema Studies and will broadly speak to academics in Film & Media Studies, Women & Gender Studies, South Asian Studies, and their intersections.

This account by Bassma Kodmani details her passionate fight for democratic change in Syria. It is both her personal testimony and a unique historical document. As a westernised Syrian intellectual who, in 2011, became a figure of the Syrian opposition in exile, her candid narrative sheds fresh light on this conflict with its multiple twists and turns drawn from her direct involvement over a decade. Kodmani participated in and initiated meetings and negotiations with diplomats and politicians from around the world. Her testimony covers the exclusive behind-the-scenes revelations about conversations with local and international officials and follows the mutations of the Syrian conflict. The missed opportunities, broken promises and the changing positions of some of the world's most important leaders revealed in this book illuminate the regional geopolitics of the Syrian conflict that are still unresolved today. An important source for scholars in Syria studies, Kodmani's personal reflections add a human element to the political analysis.

This book centres lesbian lives and perspectives to provide novel understandings of LGBTQ+ research, culture, and society, showing that understandings of these issues are often distorted by an androcentric approach to knowledge production. In addition to providing fresh empirical insight into the politics of LGBTQ+ spaces, the book also provides a commentary on the limiting consequences of not adequately incorporating women's experiences into research and provides new insights into the shaping of (in)visibility and belonging in LGBTQ+ social spaces.
