Race and Gender in the US Economy is the first economic and legal analysis of the economic status of women and Asian, Black, and Latinx Americans in the United States. Building on his decades of expertise, Gerald Jaynes argues that many economists undervalue the impact that changing antidiscrimination laws had on the behavioral norms of the American people as men and women fought to end discrimination in America's markets and other institutions. These fights often happened outside the economic marketplace-in courts, legislative bodies, and social institutions-and succeeded in improving the economic status of people of color and women.

Blending economic reasoning and data with bold historical narrative, this book examines the changing economic status of minoritized groups within the context of developing constitutional law, extending from the Thirteenth Amendment's abolition of slavery to and beyond the Civil Rights Act of 1964. When the United Holy Church of America moved to curtail women's ordination in 1924, Ida Bell Robinson broke away to found a church where women would not only preach but lead. The Subversive Pulpit argues that Robinson used her agency and autonomy amid the upheavals of the Great Migration to build a religious enterprise defined by radical gender egalitarianism and socioeconomic uplift for Black women and their communities.

Centering Robinson as founder and first bishop of the Mount Sinai Holy Church of America, Dara Coleby Delgado shows how her religious program extended far beyond the question of whether women should preach. Drawing on unpublished denominational records, census data, the Black Press, and other archival sources, Delgado interprets Robinson's efforts to "loose the women" as a practical, economically consequential project. It also examines how iconic magazine editors like Anna Wintour, Carine Roitfeld, and Ita Buttrose are represented in documentaries and fictionalized depictions of their careers. How lesbian feminist theories of sex illuminate public anxieties about sin, guilt, and innocence

Stereotyped as manhating, puritanical killjoys, lesbian feminists have drawn almost as much contempt as the conservative Christian movements to which they are compared. Rather than dismissing this negativity, Lesbian Feminist Killjoys embraces it. In Not Tiger Moms, Miliann Kang explores the racist, xenophobic roots of this trope and how it undermines Asian American mothers, silencing their voices and inhibiting their connections to their children, to each other, and to other mothers, including their own. Through deeply personal and candid interviews, Asian American mothers who were born or grew up predominantly in the United States share stories that upend perceptions of them as both model minority reproducers and foreign threats. Instead, they chart new pathways to and through motherhood, imagining more expansive possibilities not only for Asian American mothers, but for all mothers.

Navigating Disability, HIV, Relationships and Abuse for Christian Women in Nigeria contains poignant stories of formidable women who, because of their gender and disabilities, were sexually assaulted and infected with HIV by people known to and loved by them. Focusing on the Christian women of Port Harcourt, Nigeria, the book brings together the often under-represented voices of women with disabilities and HIV in an under-researched area of Nigeria.

Her Hat Was in the Ring details the fascinating story of the thousands of women who ran for elective office in the United States between 1850 and 1920. Contrary to popular belief, women's right to vote and the right to hold elective office weren't always tied to one another. Whether women could become candidates, and for which offices, was determined by each state. For several decades after 1850, women ran for local and some state offices without themselves sometimes having the right to vote, motivated by the desire to advance women's rights and serve their communities as well as personal ambition.

Drawing on newspapers, state government reports, historical and biographical archives, and other resources, historians Wendy E. Chmielewski and Jill Norgren trace the legal, social, and cultural shifts across the country that made it possible for women to gain election to political office. This history is told through the stories of the trailblazing women candidates who ran in thousands of elective campaigns. Chmielewski and Norgren examine how these women were received in their communities, in male-dominated political parties and legislatures, and what administrative and policy contributions they made once elected.

This book expands our understanding of American women's demand for full citizenship, a struggle that included the successful battle for the right to elective office. In the wake of the Second Intifada and energized by the Arab Spring, young Palestinian designers have used fashion to voice their political consciousness and forge affective communities in the face of Israeli occupation. This book proposes to understand their practices as "queer decolonial fashion," a collaborative aesthetic ethos attuned to gender, sexuality, race, and the environment that transcends nationalist framings of the Palestinian struggle. Making the case for queer decolonial fashion as a model of creative activism, Dressed for Dissent shows how these designers' work-imbricated with body, identity, and land-ultimately emerges as a site where a viable future for a free Palestine can be envisioned, while also offering insights relevant to other settler-colonial contexts.

The fourth decade of the HIV/AIDS pandemic, the COVID-19 outbreak, and landmark struggles for reproductive justice has illuminated interconnected health inequities faced by Black women globally. As the first book-length ethnographic study to focus on Black girls and women living with HIV in the Anglophone Caribbean, Ill Erotics shows how women's everyday lives contrast with widely circulated "end of AIDS crisis" narratives that equate biomedical progres with the end of the epidemic and prioritize individual responsibility for HIV self-management. Jallicia Jolly chronicles how these women navigate the contradictory interventions of the state, biomedicine, humanitarianism, and HIV/AIDS organizations. She argues that the grassroots practice of care enables a Black feminist infrastructure that centers interdependence, sexual agency, and political mobilization while repurposing discourses of shame, isolation, and contagion as ill erotics.

A shocking story of social engineering in the era of Jim Crow

The eugenics movement, in which the state arrogated to itself the right to determine who could and who could not have children, was a dark, shameful chapter in American history. Virginia was infamous as an epicenter of eugenic thought; the case of Buck v. Bell, which resulted in one of the Supreme Court's most notorious decisions, originated there. In Under the Guise of Protection, Erin Bush describes how state programs designed for "delinquent" young women like Carrie Buck-whose sterilization took place while she was an inmate at the Virginia State Colony for Epileptics and Feebleminded-developed in Virginia's distinctive environment of "progressive" ideology and racial segregation.

Buck was far from alone. Between 1910 and 1942, the commonwealth's public welfare bureaucrats and charity workers confined more than 2,300 adolescent white and African American girls at juvenile reformatories. By examining the programs developed at these segregated institutions, in both rural and urban areas, this groundbreaking book sheds new light on the connections between juvenile justice, racial politics, and the tendentious use of "science" in the development of social reforms in the early twentieth century.

Addressing the timely and highly contentious issues of childhood, gender, and sexuality, this book approaches polarised debates by proposing a unique, politically informed framework for gender education in early childhood. Affect's Engine is an immersive ethnography of queer people of color on the social media platform Tumblr during its "peak" years, 2010-2015. Alexander Cho tells the story of Tumblr users and the hurricane of content that they circulated-and that circulated around them. Chronicling a formative time in social media history, Cho shows how a multiply minoritized population utilized Tumblr's unique structure to express, emote, and bond together as a survival strategy for resisting white supremacy and heteronormativity. Paying critical attention to user-facing design, he argues that this was not as possible on other platforms. The same features that drew queer people of color to Tumblr-to feel intensely-also explain why the platform did not succeed financially: its design did not instantiate a version of the good liberal subject-linear, singular, discrete, orderly, public, and market legible. While painting a vivid picture of a vital and bygone internet era, Cho asks readers to take seriously how affect is shaped by user-facing design on social media.

Dating and domestic violence are two the most frequently occurring forms of gender-based violence, both in the United States and globally. A growing body of international law has identified the failure of states to adequately protect people from gender-based violence as a violation of human rights. In order to improve prevention efforts, people must understand the scope, extent, dynamics, and characteristics of dating and domestic violence. Unfortunately, too many people hold dangerous misconceptions about abuse that hinder prevention efforts.

This book is intended to help address misconceptions about dating and domestic violence, thereby helping to inform readers who can and should be involved in prevention practices. The first part of the book shares important information about dating and domestic violence, describing how they are a violation of fundamental human rights as well as reviewing the scope of abuse in the United States and globally, risk and protective factors, characteristics of victims and offenders, the effects of abuse, and barriers to leaving abusers. The second part of the book builds on that foundation to present curricula that can be used in schools and other institutions to teach about abuse, as well as other lesson ideas for various settings. As well, the second part of the book presents a case study of how to build a campus-community collaborative prevention program. In all, the book aims to promote peace in every relationship through a deeper understanding of dating and domestic violence.

Why autocratic leaders have adopted gender-equality reforms as a way to legitimize their rule

Authoritarian governments are often seen as attacking gender equality. Vladimir Putin, Viktor Orban, and Recep Tayyip Erdogan have made well-publicized critiques of feminism. But, as Elin Bjarnegard and Paer Zetterberg show in this book, autocratic regimes are also actively adopting gender-equality reforms, surpassing some democracies in their embrace of such policies. Why have leaders of countries known for violating human rights become unlikely champions of gender equality? Bjarnegard and Zetterberg argue that gender serves as a versatile tool for autocrats seeking to legitimize their rule, deflecting attention from authoritarian practices by promoting policies that seem liberal and even democratic. They call this strategy of political misdirection autocratic genderwashing.

Drawing on data from authoritarian governments in countries including Rwanda, Nicaragua, Singapore, and Uganda, Bjarnegard and Zetterberg show how gender equality policies interact with noncoercive authoritarian strategies to claim legitimacy for autocratic rule. They describe autocratic genderwashing as political theater, shining a spotlight on specific reforms and accomplishments-domestic violence legislation, increased numbers of women in parliament, the creation of women's policy agencies-while leaving authoritarian practices in the dark. Considering the question of whether autocratic genderwashing is successful as a legitimation strategy, Bjarnegard and Zetterberg find that it is more convincing to international audiences than to domestic ones.

In The Battle for White Male Supremacy, Mary McThomas sheds new light on the entwined racial and gender ideologies that have come to define large segments of the American Right and are roiling American law and politics. Individual chapters trace the development, ideas, and influence of several key groups: incels, alt-right vigilante groups, Christian nationalists, and men's rights groups at war with the judiciary. While these groups are often treated as discrete phenomena with distinct histories and ostensibly different goals, all share an interconnected belief system of victimhood and embattled white masculinity. By tracking these similarities, McThomas exposes how racial and gendered belief systems are connected both within and across groups.

What is more, McThomas shows that these groups' beliefs and tactics have moved from the extremist fringes of society to the mainstream of American politics. They've gained broad traction in public opinion and political discourse, and they are transforming law and policy at both the state and federal levels.
