This book argues for an approach based on values when trying to make sense of shifts and changes that occurred in French politics during the last four decades. Values play a pivotal role in structuring political views and policy preferences. They influence citizens' attitudes and behaviours as well as reflect long-lasting political cultures and cleavages. After presenting the data collected within the European values studies, on which the six contributions included in this book build, we explain how these contributions highlight some major French political dynamics by scrutinizing key driving forces such as the individualization process, generational replacement or ideological consistency in economic and cultural beliefs, and by re-assessing how attitudes toward democracy, religiosity and nationalism shape political attitudes. Challenging dominant narratives of value crisis, this book sets up an agenda for future research on French politics through the lens of value change.

Das Thema Geschichte gehoert zu den Grundbedingungen der menschlichen Zeitlichkeit. Sie hat bei der Menschwerdung des Menschen eine entscheidende Rolle gespielt, nicht allein, was die Evolutionsgeschichte angeht, sondern gleichzeitig die Bewusstseinsgeschichte und die gesamte Wirklichkeitsgeschichte. Von einem Anfang und einem Ende der Geschichte kann ebenso wenig die Rede sein wie von einer Gesamtgeschichte, die im Wirklichen selbst ihre Ursache hat. Die Geschichte ist inzwischen im Wirklichen selbst aufgegangen und gibt alles wieder, was darin geschieht bzw. sich vollzieht. Umstritten ist, ob es dafuer bestimmte Regeln und Grundlagen gibt. Selbst der sogenannte Urknall ist wohl eher als Einzelgeschehen zu bewerten denn als Erklaerung fuer ein Gesamtwirkliches, das damit begonnen hat. Dasselbe koennte auf die universelle Gueltigkeit von Naturgesetzen zutreffen, die fuer alles gelten, was im Wirklichen geschieht. Sie folgen einer Hochkomplexitaet, die sich im Laufe der Wirklichkeitsgeschichte ausgebildet hat und in Form eines Universalspiels ablaufen, an dem saemtliche Wirklichkeiten beteiligt sind. Daraus ergibt sich ein Geschichtsuniversalismus, der allem zugrunde liegt, was wir als Realitaet wahrnehmen und die zugleich das sich darin vollziehende reale Dasein ausmacht.

Between 1890 and 1945 thousands of manuscripts made in Europe before 1600 appeared on the market. Many entered the collections in which they have remained, shaping where and how we encounter the books today. From 1965 to 2005, the United Teachers of New Orleans (UTNO) defied the South's conservative anti-union efforts to become the largest local in Louisiana. Jesse Chanin argues that UTNO accomplished and maintained its strength through strong community support, addressing a Black middle-class political agenda, internal democracy, and drawing on the legacy and tactics of the civil rights movement by combining struggles for racial and economic justice, all under Black leadership and with a majority women and Black membership. However, the devastating effects of Hurricane Katrina provided the state government and local charter school advocates with the opportunity to remake the school system and dismantle the union. Authorities fired 7,500 educators, marking the largest dismissal of Black teaching staff since Brown v. Board of Education.

Chanin highlights the significant staying power and political, social, and community impact of UTNO, as well as the damaging effects of the charter school movement on educators.

The year of the four emperors in AD 193 shows the cosmopolitan interconnectedness of the Roman Empire, yet scholarship has long framed the Severan dynasty in a narrative of descent stressing their North African and in particular their Syrian origins. Objects of knowledge exist within material, immaterial, and conceptual worlds. Once the world is conceived from the perspective of others, the physical ontology of modern science no longer functions as a standard by which to understand other orderings of reality, whether from ethnographical or historical sources. In Worldmaking and Cuneiform Antiquity, Francesca Rochberg extends an anthropology of science to the historical world of cuneiform texts of ancient Babylonia. Exploring how Babylonian science has been understood, she proposes a new direction for scholarship by recognizing the world of ancient science, not as a less developed form of modern science, but as legitimate and real in its own right.

Im Band werden Faelle metaphorischen Sprachgebrauchs im Altgriechischen aus den Quellbereichen (source domains) Temperatur, Gewicht und Geschmack gesammelt und analysiert, die zur Aeusserung von Emotionen dienen. Der metaphorische Sprachgebrauch stellt in den letzten Jahren einen Schwerpunkt der Forschung verschiedener Disziplinen dar. Denn im Gegensatz zum frueheren, traditionellen Verstaendnis von Metaphern als dekorativen und eher dichterischen Stilmitteln wurde in der neueren Forschung gezeigt, dass es sich bei Metaphern um einen Bestandteil alltaeglicher Sprache handelt und dass sie kognitive Prozesse darstellen. Im Bereich der klassischen Philologie konzentrierte sich die bisherige Forschung auf literarische Texte. Von besonderem Interesse fuer die Untersuchung des metaphorischen Sprachgebrauchs im Altgriechischen ist aber auch die Heranziehung der dokumentarischen Texte, die aufgrund ihres besonderen Charakters und ihres engen Bezugs zur alltaeglichen Lebenswelt der Schreibenden einen Einblick in die gesprochene Sprache vermitteln koennen.
