This book explores educational reform in China through the author's roles as a state-designated foreign expert, assistant professor, and senior editor. Based on fieldwork in urban and rural areas, it examines the integration of authentic literary materials into EFL instruction during a transformative period of curricular innovation.

The research spans diverse regional contexts-from capital city Beijing to semi-rural Zhaotong in the southwest and Zhuhai, a special economic zone in the southeastern coastal region-and compares key educational institutions at the university and secondary levels. Through transcript excerpts of recorded classroom conversations, focus group interviews, and surveys, it amplifies the voices of mainland Chinese EFL teachers and students. Teachers reflect on their approaches to teaching L1 literature and adapting it for EFL courses, while students engage with literary texts by a major Chinese American author, gaining awareness of cultural and generational gaps that shape their own lives. This rich ethnographic narrative provides empirical insights into progressive pedagogy within applied linguistics contexts.

This monograph is intended for researchers and practitioners in applied linguistics, TESOL, education, and Chinese studies, as well as lay readers interested in contemporary mainland Chinese classroom practices, particularly of literature.

Introduction to English Across Contexts offers a structured, integrated approach to understanding the English language, combining insights from applied linguistics, pragmatics, sociolinguistics, discourse studies, and cultural research.

Organised into three thematic parts, it explores language as a code (focusing on its structural regularities and patterns of use), as interaction (examining the role of context, intention, and social dynamics in meaning exchange), and as representation (exploring the ways in which language constructs and conveys knowledge and reality). The book bridges gaps between these dimensions, enabling users to grasp how grammar, interactional goals, and meaning-making intersect in real-world communication. By combining established models with an emphasis on usability, the volume equips readers with analytical tools to understand, evaluate, and produce texts with greater clarity, appropriateness, and awareness.

Designed for undergraduate and postgraduate courses, the book provides students, researchers, and educators with precise terminology, practical models, and analytical tools. It is an essential resource for understanding English in academic, professional, and cultural settings.

Digital Health Discourse offers a comprehensive overview of how health and illness are talked about, represented, and negotiated across contemporary digital platforms. Bringing together linguistic, discourse-analytical, and multimodal perspectives, it explores a wide range of digital contexts-including health query interfaces, online support groups, websites, social media, mobile health apps, and patient feedback systems-to reveal how digital technologies shape notions of health knowledge, expertise, responsibility, and care in the digital age.

The textbook foregrounds the role of platform affordances, participation, and design in structuring interaction, while attending closely to broader social forces such as medicalization, commercialization, neoliberalism, and inequality. By combining theoretical discussion with rich, detailed examples from existing research, it equips readers with the conceptual tools needed to critically analyze digital health communication and understand how everyday online interactions not only reflect but continually shape and reshape contemporary health practices.

Through detailed case studies, the book demonstrates how to conduct discourse analyses of interactions that use language and other visual resources, involving both health experts and non-professionals, including those with lived experience. Readers are invited to complete practical tasks designed to inspire their own research into the ever-expanding domains of digital health communication. Essential for researchers and postgraduate students in the fields of language and health, health communication, and discourse analysis.

This book explores the mediation and contestation of medical evidence in Wikipedia.

Existing scholarship in the medical sciences has highlighted Wikipedia as a key tool for medical 'knowledge translation', understood as the process of accelerating the wide dissemination and implementation of the latest scientific evidence in healthcare. Little is known, however, about the people, practices and politics involved in the production of Wikipedia's medicine and health-related content. To address this gap, this book draws on theories and methods developed in the humanities field of translation studies and over a decade of empirical research into Wikipedia to examine the social, cultural and political dimensions of medical knowledge translation in the online encyclopedia. In doing so, it not only elucidates the complexity of factors that shape what knowledge gets translated, who by, why and how. It also shows how positioning medical knowledge translation within a broader continuum of other interlingual, intralingual and inter-epistemic translational practices can open up novel transdisciplinary perspectives on the critical challenges of improving health, health literacy and healthcare worldwide.

The book is ideal for health humanities researchers and students interested in the deep entanglement of medical evidence, media, power, identity and culture in today's digital age.

This study addresses a longstanding gap in our knowledge of Malacca Creole Portuguese during the Portuguese, Dutch, and early British colonial periods, while opening new avenues for further research. Drawing on contemporary documents, published sources, and rare linguistic materials, it presents a coherent account of the emergence of the creole under Portuguese rule and its subsequent shaping and persistence during the Dutch and British periods. Historical sociolinguistic parallels between Batavia and Malacca allow a reconstruction of the creole's form in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Unpublished nineteenth-century documents further reveal the profile of the creole-speaking community in the 1880s and enable a comparative analysis of the language in 1883.

This book explores examples of 'toxic language', the linguistic manifestations of societal conflicts and aggressions, that have arisen in Asian contexts.

By highlighting toxic language, a panoramic concept borrowed from computational linguistics, the book assesses hate speech, harassment, discrimination, cyberbullying, sarcasm, irony and other kinds of offensive, impolite and harmful language that targets individuals, groups and communities based on their gender, race and other factors. With extensive data collected from local and global social media platforms, such as YouTube, Twitter, and Weibo, and offline settings, including political debates, video bullet comments, and song lyrics, this book leverages pragmatics and sociolinguistics to analyze the specific constructions of toxic language, its culture-specific development, and its dynamics in relation to contemporary Asian societies.

Representing authentic data from Asian contexts including Brunei, China, Indonesia, Japan and South Korea, this book will be a valuable resource to students and scholars of Asian society, culture and language as well as researchers working in pragmatics and sociolinguistics.

Dictionaries are complex, many-layered works: not only are they shaped by the cultural discourses of their time; they also actively shape the ways in which we perceive the world. Tracing a historical journey from eighteenth-century Europe to the present day, the contributions in this volume examine a rich variety of English and Romance dictionaries. Whether monolingual or bilingual, general-purpose or specialised, dictionaries emerge as indispensable components of the dominant discourses that we so often take for granted. This book sheds light on how dictionaries acquired this influential role.

This book offers a holistic view of the complex dynamics of interpreter-facilitated legal interviews, elucidating insights into challenges and opportunities for effective communication in legal settings in today's multilingual world.

The volume sheds light on an underexplored area of research at the intersection of language and the law in its focus on legal interviews, a key dimension of legal communication. Xu adopts an ethnographic approach to data from authentic interviews at several legal aid institutions in Australia, supported by survey data with lawyers and interpreters from across Australia. Drawing on these different data sources, Xu explores the ethical, technological, and communicative challenges in interpreter-mediated legal interviews, from deviations in ethical standards by untrained interpreters to the difficulties of remote interpreting. In so doing, the volume puts in starker relief the importance of professional training, ethical practices, and proactive approaches in facilitating effective communication and access to justice for all clients in multilingual legal settings.

This book will be of interest to students and scholars in translation and interpreting studies and language and the law, as well as related areas such as legal studies and immigration studies.

East and Southeast Asia are home to remarkable linguistic diversity, yet this diversity is increasingly under threat as political, economic, cultural, and other social transformations reshape the region. This volume brings together two introductory chapters and ten country-focused studies-covering Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Thailand, the Philippines, Singapore, and Indonesia-to identify patterns of language endangerment and marginalization, and to showcase ongoing revitalization efforts. A distinctive feature of the book is its use of Lee and Van Way's (2016) Language Endangerment Index (LEI), which provides a common framework for balanced comparison across the communities examined.

This collection proposes the notion of "translation awareness," bringing together insights from different sectors to lend greater awareness to the nature, role, and effects of translation in contemporary societal life.

The book sets out translation awareness as a unifying term around recognition by various agents, from organizations to institutions and individuals, of the importance of translation. The book is organized around three thematic sections showcasing sectors where awareness of translation processes can be critical. The first section looks at public service translation and interpreting, in which translation has a direct impact on social welfare and facilitating access to key services. The second part focuses on technology and the ways in which translation is increasingly mediated by emerging digital tools, while also addressing awareness of translation in research. The final section explores paraprofessional translation, in such areas as corporate and healthcare communication, where translation can be essential but is often overlooked. Taken together, the volume showcases how "translation awareness" can elucidate important insights on the role of translation in society, encouraging future work into its further conceptual development.

This volume will be of interest to scholars in translation and interpreting studies as well as related areas, such as language and communication studies, multilingualism and health literacy.

Learning Intermediate Japanese through Anime builds Japanese learners' linguistic proficiency while deepening their cultural and historical understanding of anime.

Designed around anime-themed readings, dialogues, and activities, the textbook helps learners develop skills in reading, writing, listening, and speaking as they explore anime as a significant artistic and cultural form. The book is structured around eight key topics: the origins of anime, the anime industry, anime as technology, anime as design, anime as genre, anime as language, anime pioneers, and anime fandom. Each lesson focuses on a different language skill such as describing historical events in the passive voice, interpreting and presenting data, explaining processes, describing visual and narrative elements, summarizing information, forming arguments, making comparisons, and expressing opinions. Through this integrated approach, learners gain both practical Japanese language skills and a critical framework for understanding anime as a dynamic and influential part of Japanese culture.

This textbook is intended for students of Japanese language at intermediate high to advanced low level on the ACTFL proficiency scale and CEFR level B1 to B2.

Accompanying online resources include audio recordings of readings from the book and sample grammar worksheets to facilitate classroom planning. These materials can be accessed at www.routledge.com/9781041089636.

How can textual criticism illuminate the history of Biblical Hebrew? This book addresses that question by examining the linguistic profile of secondary readings in the Classical Biblical Hebrew, or pre-exilic, corpus. By analysing variants preserved in the textual tradition of the Hebrew Bible, it shows that textual fluidity is not an obstacle but a valuable resource for describing the linguistic history of Biblical Hebrew. The study demonstrates the importance of textual criticism for a finer description of the periodization of Biblical Hebrew. Combining philology and linguistics, the book offers a new perspective on the relationship between textual transmission and the linguistic history of the Biblical Hebrew.

This book elucidates the communicative practices of multilingual international students in university classrooms, charting how they employ not only speech but also a rich set of nonverbal semiotic resources for successful communication.

Matsumoto scrutinizes multilingual multimodal interactional sequences in which distinct multimodal features, such as gesture, laughter, or mobile technology, play key roles in enacting agency in multilingual international students. Supported by data drawn from face-to-face classroom interactions as well as virtual settings that were crucial means of communication during the COVID-19 pandemic, the volume argues that, in expanding the borders of what we consider "classroom interaction," we can uncover new insights into learner agency and interactional norms in multilingual university classrooms.

This volume is intended for students and scholars interested in multilingual international students, multimodal and multisensory communication, applied linguistics, language education, and classroom discourse analysis.

This monograph uses critical discourse analysis to examine warning posts shared within an online community of self-identified escorts in the UK. Combining the discourse-historical approach with the narrative practice paradigm it examines how escorts position clients and themselves across three levels: as characters within stories, as members of a professional community, and in relation to broader societal discourses surrounding sex work.

The monograph shows how escorts collectively name, categorise, and circulate knowledge about problematic client conduct from boundary violations and economic harm to verbal abuse and privacy violations, developing sophisticated community practices for managing occupational risk in the absence of formal institutional protection. It examines both stories that explicitly name harassment and those describing experiences that align with legal and scholarly understandings of sexually harassing conduct, identifying what the book terms the grey areas of sexual harassment in sex work: forms of conduct that constitute significant violations of dignity yet remain inadequately captured by existing frameworks.

Moving between the specificity of individual linguistic choices and the broader structures of stigma, legal precarity, and gendered inequality within which escorts' narratives are embedded, the monograph ultimately argues for a contextually grounded and community-informed understanding of workplace sexual harassment and contributes to broader conversations on gendered violence, labour precarity, and sex worker rights.

This book examines creative new ways in which legal and administrative information are communicated to diverse audiences. Using a range of theoretical frameworks, it explores these transformations within broader societal issues such as legal activism, access to justice, and citizen participation.

Increasingly, there has been widespread recognition that non-specialists need to be able to understand legal information. Although plain language campaigns have made considerable progress in ensuring that legal texts are now less dense and more readable, such measures are often shown to be insufficient. For this reason, many institutions such as parliaments and courts have made considerable efforts to present this information in more attractive digital formats, and to disseminate the core messages via other media including video and virtual reality. In addition to addressing the social and political trends underlying these changes, the volume provides evidence of various cognitive and multimodal strategies used in different languages and cultures, investigating discourse practices in Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America and North America.

The collection will be a valuable resource for academics, researchers and professionals working in the areas of law, public administration, communication, and applied linguistics.

This book provides a detailed grammatical and lexical description of Maku (Maku), a language isolate formerly spoken in a remote region of northern Brazilian Amazonia. Based on materials collected by researchers since 1912, it documents a language that became extinct around 2000 with the passing of Kuluta (Sinfronio Magalhaes). Maku represents a remnant of a historically diverse and complex ethnolinguistic landscape, largely erased through the expansion of neighboring groups and colonization. The volume includes seventeen annotated texts and is accompanied by approximately 1,000 audio recordings, allowing direct access to 500 examples from the grammatical description, nearly as many vocabulary items, and ten texts, all recorded from Kuluta, providing an invaluable resource for linguists and researchers of Amazonian languages.

This book explores the grammaticalization of the French verb voir ('to see') and its derived forms (voici, voila), offering new insights into how lexical entities integrate into grammatical paradigms.

Through diachronic and synchronic corpus analysis, the study traces the evolution of voir into diverse paradigms, including verbal categories (aspect, mood, and voice), pragmatic markers (presentatives, focus constructions, discourse markers), and particles (vu, vu que). By adopting a paradigmatic approach, it demonstrates how grammar consists of structured sets of elements sharing common syntactic and semantic features, moving beyond traditional linear models of grammaticalization. The research highlights how grammatical reanalysis leads to functional diversification, illustrating the dynamic interplay between syntax and semantics in language change. The volume provides a precise and systematic framework for analyzing linguistic change, demonstrating the broader applicability of paradigmatic structuring to understanding the integration of lexical items into grammatical systems.

This book will appeal to linguistics scholars interested in grammaticalization, historical linguistics, and language change.

This sixth volume co-published with the International Federation for the Teaching of English offers a timely examination of English as an inspirational and emancipatory subject in times of global crisis, exploring how teachers enable students to face contemporary challenges while remaining resilient, critical and optimistic about the future.

Positioned in the post-Covid world, the book presents 24 chapters from IFTE countries and beyond, addressing urgent contemporary themes including the climate crisis, misinformation and censorship, nationalism and populism, education in neoliberal environments, and the impact of social media and AI. Contributors explore how literature provides endless sources of hope and fear, utopias and dystopias, offering young people vital reflective space in an age of ultra-anxiety and existential crisis. Topics covered include teacher preparation and resilience, the significance of literature in fostering critical thinking and personal response, and the dystopian challenges of patriarchy, racism, censorship and antidemocratic pressures. The volume recognizes work that is distinctive and local whilst celebrating international innovations and best practices, demonstrating how English remains the subject where urgent issues can be explored and the joy of human expression celebrated.

This international volume serves as an essential resource for English teachers, teacher educators, researchers and policymakers seeking to understand how the subject offers a rich environment for overturning despair, maintaining optimism and improving social justice in education.

This book presents the concerns, concepts and methodologies of Ecological Discourse Analysis (EDA) based on the shared positions and practices of previous undertakings of discourse analysis. EDA is regarded as an emerging paradigm in discourse studies which undertakes ecologically motivated study of discourses that influences ecological relations.
The authors propose a multifaceted ecosophy that incorporates Chinese ethical and philosophical traditions and ecological principles. The ecosophy of 'Diversity and Harmony, Interaction and Co-existence' describes the features of ecological dynamics, providing a basis for the evaluation of the ecological meaning represented in discourses. This ecosophy contributes to such efforts with its origin in Chinese philosophies, therefore offering new opportunities for East-West dialogues on ecological values.
An ecogrammar built on Systemic Functional Linguistics is provided as the analytical tool and is applied in the analysis of textbooks, news reports and advertisements. The book also examines the provision of EDA for other fields of study, inspiring research possibilities that are beneficial for an ecological future and inspiring interdisciplinary and multi-methodological studies to be integrated with EDA.

This book investigates the linguistic features and translation strategies of English-to-Chinese film translation from a comparative, corpus-based perspective.

It establishes an English-Chinese parallel corpus of 50 Oscar-winning or -nominated English films, alongside a reference corpus of 215 original Chinese films. This provides a foundation for exploring how translated film dialogue can be made more natural and colloquial. Focusing on character usage, vocabulary, syntactic patterns and cultural elements such as honorifics, idioms and vulgar language, the analysis reveals the distinctive differences between translated and original Chinese film texts. It also compares official dubbing translations with online fan subtitles. Using quantitative metrics such as frequency, lexical grade and multiplier values, the book provides practical translation strategies and stylistic benchmarks for English-Chinese film translation.

This book will serve as an invaluable reference for researchers and students of translation studies interested in English-Chinese translation, audiovisual translation and corpus linguistics. It will also provide translation professionals with a valuable guide to improving the quality and audience acceptance of film translation through evidence-based strategies and methodological approaches.

The Austrian naturalist and explorer Johann Natterer (1787-1843) earned his renown as one of the world's greatest collectors of indigenous artifacts and natural treasures-mainly expertly prepared specimens-which he dispatched to the Imperial Court in Vienna. Yet, a parallel endeavour, scarcely known beyond specialist circles, was no less ambitious. Over the course of eighteen years of travel through the Brazilian interior and neighbouring regions, Natterer undertook a meticulous documentation of the languages spoken by the indigenous nations he encountered. The results of this extraordinary enterprise are presented here for the first time.
In this volume you will find transcriptions with English translations of more than seventy annotated vocabularies, recorded by Natterer among a broad range of Amazonian peoples and preserved in the University Library of Basel (Switzerland). Remarkable for their authenticity and faithful representation, these materials provide an exceptional view of the linguistic and cultural diversity that existed in Amazonia when most of its languages were still unknown to the wider world.

The open access publication of this book was funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation. When Tunisians travel east, Levantine speakers are often struck by expressions like "eating in their food" or "whistling in a little tune." What accounts for this distinctive usage? This book explains why Tunisian Arabic requires the preposition fii ('in') before a direct object in specific contexts. Examining three key constructions, it shows how fii-marking arises from the interaction between case licensing and event structure. It further argues that fii serves as a structural repair strategy when accusative case cannot be licensed canonically, offering a clear and insightful syntactic account of a remarkable feature of Tunisian Arabic grammar.

This book offers a comprehensive treatment of the philosophy of translation and its concern with the problem of truth across the work of nine authors.

The volume is grounded in the idea of the philosophy of translation as the philosophical discourse about translation written within the European and Anglo-American traditions in the last two centuries. Each chapter presents the central tenets of one author on translation and the concepts of language and society underlying those tenets within the wider body of the author's work. The book examines the discipline's origins with Friedrich Schleiermacher. Subsequent sections explore the truth of art and hermeneutics as discussed by Walter Benjamin and Hans-Georg Gadamer, the problem of meaning and truth as conceived by W.V.O. Quine and Donald Davidson, and the political and ethical dimensions of translation as seen by Jacques Derrida and Barbara Cassin - with a brief consideration of translation theorists Antoine Berman and Henri Meschonnic. While translation theory focuses on the how of translation, the philosophy of translation explores the what of translation and, in turn, provides tools for future challenges.

This book will be of interest to scholars in translation studies and philosophy of language as well as to those working in the history of ideas, and the political theory of language.
