Around the globe, one in five girls under age 18 are married, and this number can double in areas affected by poverty, conflict, and other humanitarian crises. Child marriage, especially when accompanied by early and frequent pregnancy, often has sharply negative effects on female health, fertility, and mortality. In a wider context, child marriage influences population dynamics, economic development, and many other aspects of the cultures in which it is practiced.

Part I of this book features a collection of essays examining the drivers and consequences of modern-day child marriage. Part II profiles 30 cultures that engage in child marriage around the globe, including in countries across Asia, Africa, Europe, and the Americas. This book provides an overall introduction to the plea leniency system in China from different perspectives, such as judges, prosecutors, lawyers, and victims. Also, the editors organize the book in accordance with the consequential stages of criminal procedure, including the investigation, prosecution, trial and appeal. This book gives a brief introduction to the latest developments of China's criminal justice reform, as well as an in-depth analysis of two core subjects of the entire criminal justice reform, that is, the trial-centered reform and the plea leniency system. Therefore, this book can provide a popular reading as well as an academic reference for international organizations, institutions and researchers who are interested in the development of criminal justice in China.

Ben Peterson explores the erosion of communal self-governance in contemporary American society and its consequences: rising social disorder and increased dependence on formal institutions such as policing and incarceration.
Drawing on thinkers such as Elinor and Vincent Ostrom, Russell Kirk, Glenn C. Loury, and James Q. Wilson, Peterson investigates the concept of the "social commons"-the shared moral and relational space we inhabit and shape through norms and actions. Arguing that restoring the social commons requires informal mechanisms of governance that cultivate virtue and mutual accountability, Peterson critiques both abolitionist and punitive paradigms, advocating instead for a middle path rooted in a character-centered approach to community life. He highlights the unique role of religious communities-especially Christian congregations-as vital sanctuaries of moral order capable of renewing the social fabric and offering hope amid chaos.

What underpins the legitimacy of the prison system in the twenty-first century? Despite numerous challenges and setbacks, there is still a widespread belief that prisons can be improved in a socially progressive way. Even today, 'model prisons' are being built that seek to fix the shortcomings and failures of their predecessors, as if past failures were due to a lack of imagination, determination, or resources.

The aim of creating model prisons is not new: it dates back to the early nineteenth century. Ranging from England to Switzerland and Spain, from Russia to China and India, Carceral Utopia documents a rich, global history of ambitious efforts to create model prisons - places of confinement initially lauded for their progressive ideals but later revealed as fiascos.

At the end of this journey through time and space, it will not suffice merely to highlight the gap between plans and realities, or even to dispel the illusion that model prisons could not live up to their claims. We need to ask why, despite so many failures, these institutions are still being built today. Might their many obvious shortcomings conceal a covert success?

This open access book engages with the topic of how ethical values are involved in every intentional human action - both in research, governance and civil society. The question of this book is: what ethical values, challenges, and actions are associated with the commons and commoning? Do commons have a specific ethical and moral orientation? How can we engage with different and plural orientations? While the ethical values of commons may be implied, they are rarely made explicit or linked to ethical claims or theories in philosophy. This book aims to build awareness around the different ethical values, positions, and perspectives linked to commons, common property, and commoning research and practice. Building ethical awareness can help scholars strengthen their tools and skills for analyzing commons. Similarly, improved ethical awareness can give scholars a range of philosophical arguments to navigate and justify links between commons and their ethical values, actions, and outcomes orientations.
