This book re-examines drug control through the lens of health and human rights. It offers the first comprehensive and systematic analysis of the international drug control regime from its inception to the present day. It traces the development of this system through a detailed examination of all major treaties, conventions, and institutional mechanisms. Written accessibly and drawing on archival research and documentary analysis, this book explores how colonial legacies have shaped international drug control, from the 1909 Shanghai Opium Commission to the present-day policies under the UN, which are discussed in relation to good health and access. It provides an in-depth investigation of the key negotiations, alliances, and geopolitical interests that have influenced drug governance, highlighting how securitisation and prohibition have often taken precedence over public health and equitable access to essential medicines. This work will be of interest to scholars and policymakers in history, international law, international relations, global governance, drug policy, and post-colonial studies. By offering an unprecedented level of detail and synthesis, it fills a critical gap in the literature and provides a much-needed reference for understanding the long-term impacts of international drug control.

This book examines the role and significance of Alternative (Education) Provision (AP) in England, with a central focus on the inclusion and well-being of disadvantaged young people who are increasingly educated outside mainstream settings. Drawing on the author's 35-year involvement as an AP student, practitioner, leader and researcher, it offers a rare insider-informed perspective combined with a critical application of Bourdieu's capital theory.

The distinctiveness of this title lies in its critical reframing of AP through the lens of capital theory, showing how social, cultural, human, and material resources are mobilized in ways that may sustain inequality while also opening spaces for agency and transformation. It situates AP within its historical, political, and policy contexts, exposing the hidden mechanisms that shape children and young people's experiences and unfolding futures.

Although rooted in England, the analysis speaks to an international audience. Equivalent forms of AP exist in Australia, the USA, and across Europe, where debates around school exclusion, youth and social justice, and educational inequality share striking similarities. The book analyses the legal conditions for the use of insurance in waste management. The main focus of the study is the regulations of the EU and selected European countries, supplemented by a comparison with the legal regulations in the USA. The choice of the EU as the main subject of the research is due to the concept of rational ecological waste management developed in EU law. However, national and international legal instruments regulating waste management are not precisely reflected in insurance concepts covering waste risks. It proves necessary to develop a conceptual apparatus related to the definition of insurance waste risks. It seems valuable to define the role of insurance in a comprehensive waste risk management system at local and regional level.

The book examines the legal conditions for the use of insurance as a method of waste risk management. Therefore, part of the book is devoted to the application of EU environmental and waste management rules to the interpretation of financial collateral requirements and the use of insurance as a financial instrument. A special place in the book is occupied by considerations devoted to a less well-known insurance activity than the insurance contract, namely the insurance guarantee. Its qualities are increasingly recognised in the insurance market. The book draws attention to the attractiveness of the insurance guarantee for solving problems arising from the financing of waste management. The book will be of interest to both lawyers and economists, academics and practitioners in the insurance and waste management industry.

This book examines the role of law in women's involvement in and their exit from indoor prostitution. It examines the historic development of the existing legal framework and the resulting polarised contemporary legal and policy framings of prostitution which have produced and reproduce two distinct 'ideal' legal subjects - the vulnerable victim and public nuisance that is the street prostitute and the agentic, entrepreneurial indoor prostitute.

Addressing the origins of these two subjects of prostitution and examining the discursive frameworks which have led to their solidification in law, this book aims to provide a robust, methodologically and theoretically sound evaluation of the law's construction of indoor prostitution and the contested legal frameworks which emerged in response. Analysing empirical data from 53 women, 8 practitioners and three case studies of the law in action, and adopting a critical realist methodology, this book provides a detailed socio-legal examination of the law surrounding prostitution from the perspective of those it seeks to regulate. It is intended to provide evidence and guidance to support legislators and policy makers, and support for practitioners advocating for women involved in indoor prostitution. This work is timely given attention to the regulation of prostitution locally, regionally and globally, and the potential gender equality implications of different regulatory models.
