This book highlights the connections and consequences of China's regional foreign relations and the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), a key part of which is China's involvement in hydropower projects.

The connective nature of hydropower infrastructure illustrates the integrative component of China's dam development in the Mekong and establishes the foundation for the creation of a region. Laos, Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam have all played a role in absorbing the economic benefits of Chinese hydropower development in the Mekong basin either directly or indirectly. Rather than portraying the BRI as a coercive tool, the book shows recipient states have agency in choosing to participate.

Analyzing the BRI from the bottom up, this book creates frameworks from hydro-politics, Chinese politics, environmental politics, regional politics, and international relations.

This book highlights the pivotal role of water infrastructure as the bridge between water availability, supply, and stability, essential for achieving water security. Water Security in Sub-Saharan Africa: Digitalization and Sustainability of Water Infrastructure focuses on three strategic areas: digitalization, sustainability, and investment paradigms for water infrastructure. Its goal is to achieve and stabilize water security in Sub-Saharan Africa through transformative infrastructure solutions.

This book seeks to address the challenges of water scarcity by advancing water security in Sub-Saharan Africa through sustainable digital water infrastructure. It develops comprehensive frameworks that integrate digitalization and sustainability principles into water infrastructure design and management. Beginning with an exploration of water security dynamics and underpinning theories, the book examines the concept of water infrastructure through case studies. Using the Delphi technique, it proposes a sustainability framework encompassing cleaner production, water efficiency, green infrastructure, and the circular water economy. Additionally, the book explores the integration of Fourth Industrial Revolution technologies, such as the Internet of Things (IoT), Artificial Intelligence (AI), and Blockchain, into water infrastructure. These advancements culminate in a synthesized framework for sustainable digitalization, which is analyzed across various investment paradigms, considering urban-rural dynamics.

This groundbreaking book is the first to comprehensively integrate digitalization and sustainability into water infrastructure management. It aims to support informed decision-making for achieving water security in Africa. By offering cost-effective solutions for water operations and maintenance, real-time monitoring, and strategies for water efficiency, the book promotes optimal water allocation and improved water quality. Furthermore, it seeks to reshape and repurpose water-related policies, aligning them with digital and sustainability principles to enhance their effectiveness. The book also outlines strategies for attracting critical investments to the water sector, providing a roadmap for sustainable water security in Sub-Saharan Africa.

This book is a must-have for policy makers, investors, researchers and practitioners within the water sector for optimal utilization and security of water resources.

This book examines how the palm oil industry may align its business practices with circular economy principles, amid growing environmental scrutiny and regulatory pressures.

The book discusses the potential industrial benefits of adopting circular economy principles before reviewing the current state of business practice in the Malaysian palm oil industry. It highlights factors that influence the adoption of sustainable practices, including taxation, small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), waste management and valorization, and digital technologies like the Internet of Things (IoT). In doing so, the contributors provide strategies and insights for other palm oil-producing countries to transition toward more sustainable business practices.

This book is an essential resource for academics interested in agriculture, supply chain management, sustainability, and environmental studies. This volume will also be of interest to policymakers and professionals in the palm oil industry.

Great Power Politics, Elites and Energy explores the dynamics between great power politics, elites and energy, utilizing a critical political economic and historical materialist perspective that moves away from a Western-centric viewpoint and dominant International Relations methodologies.

The book highlights the reality of national ruling class competition and domination that is at the core of the dynamics of the international system, and the dependence on ever-increasing amounts of energy to bolster state power, a great power politics that locks in a power-up and ongoing usage of fossil fuels, when a power-down and energy transition is actually what is required. The way in which elites dominate their own society, and can dominate other societies, is fully theorized, together with the fundamental clash between Chinese and US political economic models and elites. The internal dynamics of China, the USA and Russia are investigated through historical materialist analyses which take full account of their specific historical development. The book links the imperative of economic growth for both elite legitimacy and relative national power to the dependence on ever-increasing amounts of energy required for that growth, rejecting the fallacy at the core of eco-modernism. It covers the inability of the international community to act effectively with respect to the energy transition while the dynamics of great power politics play out, and identifies possible interim measures.

Great Power Politics, Elites and Energy provides a provocative alternative to both mainstream international relations and eco-modernist scholarship in its representation of the dynamics of the international system. It will be of great interest to students and scholars of international relations, politics, environmental studies, sociology, economics and public policy.

Pluralism and Progress in Economics analyzes the dynamics of growth research by introducing the concept of research routines - meso-level patterns of communal practice functionally coordinated by symbolic representations.

This book tracks the development of neoclassical growth theory through four distinct stages: exploration, extension, elaboration, and exploitation. It argues that scientific change in growth research is a processual development driven by diaphoric learning, where a community of researchers creatively uses existing conceptual tools to grasp previously unrecognized causal dependencies in data. This book further evaluates the conceptions of scientific progress, identifying the limitations of conventional criteria in distinguishing genuine advancement in economics from analytical "game-playing." Pawel Kawalec proposes an ontic criterion of intensive progress, which validates an emergent research routine based on its isolation of ontologically novel causal structures. By distinguishing between derivational and ontological unification, and drawing on Robert Solow's criteria of model choice, this book defends progressive pluralism and piecemeal realism. It concludes that the coexistence of diverse models is not a sign of relativism but a mature response to the world's ontic complexity, providing a robust "library of models" essential for contextualized economic applications.

This book will be of interest to experts and graduate students specializing in economic growth models, the history of twentieth-century economics, the history and philosophy of science, and science and technology studies.

This book explores the evolving nature of economic and social policy in the United Kingdom over the last decade.

The book relies on a computational, text-as-data, analysis of thousands of official documents produced by the British government between 1983 and 2024. The primary focus is on understanding evolutions in the recent, post-2016, period, and in particular on how this period may differ from previous eras. Three key conclusions emerge: First, the rise of a more activist, interventionist, and state-led approach to economic policy; second, the parallel rise of a distinctive form of activism in social policy; and third, the rise of a host of institutions designed to constrain and outsource the authority of the executive, which was already underway before 2016. The take-away point is that the United Kingdom has moved, in the second part of the 2010s, to a post-neoliberal model that has its own internal logic and is supported by its own distinctive set of institutions.

The book will be of great interest to readers in political economy, political science, public policy, and quantitative research methods.

This book examines how Ukraine's agricultural system can move from resource-intensive production toward more sustainable, resilient, and agroecological pathways. It shows why this transition matters not only for Ukraine, but also for global food security.

Combining agricultural economics, environmental governance, and resource management, the volume offers an integrated account of the forces reshaping Ukrainian agriculture. It analyzes the country's natural resource base-chernozem soils, water systems, forests, and biodiversity-alongside the historical evolution of farming structures, land policy, and the environmental and social trade-offs of industrial agriculture. It also situates these issues within the wider context of war, post-war recovery, and the strategic choices that will shape the future of Ukrainian agriculture. The book addresses soil degradation, nutrient imbalances, pollution, war-related contamination, climate risks, and landscape fragmentation, while also examining how digital and precision technologies, sustainability metrics, data systems, reporting frameworks, climate finance, and scenario analysis can support a more governable transition. By linking environmental diagnosis with policy design, investment priorities, and institutional change, the book offers readers a clear framework for understanding both the vulnerabilities of the current model and the pathways to long-term agricultural resilience.

This book will appeal to scholars, students, policymakers, and practitioners in agricultural economics, environmental policy, sustainable development, rural studies, and food system governance.

In an era where evidence-based policymaking defines the credibility of governance, Value of Statistical Life in India offers a landmark contribution to the economics of risk, labour welfare, and regulatory design. This ground-breaking volume presents one of the most rigorous empirical estimations of the Value of Statistical Life (VSL) in the Indian context, addressing a critical gap in public policy analytics.

Focusing on occupational risks within India's manufacturing sector-particularly in Gujarat- the book systematically examines compensating wage differentials (CWD), insurance mechanisms, and Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) frameworks. Through advanced econometric modelling and a global meta-analysis using mixed-effects regression techniques, the authors situate Indian VSL estimates within international standards, aligning domestic policy discourse with practices in developed economies such as the United States.

Transcending descriptive analysis, the book offers a robust analytical foundation for cost-benefit evaluation, regulatory impact assessment, environmental risk governance, and labour protection reforms. By advocating the institutional adoption of VSL as a cornerstone of policy appraisal, it provides a transformative framework for integrating economic valuation into safety and health legislation.

Scholarly, in depth and strategic in relevance, this volume is indispensable for academics, policymakers, multilateral agencies, and regulatory authorities committed to strengthening risk governance and advancing labour welfare in emerging economies.

Over the past three decades, Central and Eastern Europe has experienced rapid economic transformation, accelerated by accession to the European Union and deeper integration into global financial markets. While improved access to credit has supported rising living standards, it has also increased households' exposure to financial fragility when economic shocks occur.

This book investigates the financial fragility of households in the region, offering new insights into how households cope with economic shocks and structural change. Despite shared experience of post-socialist transformation, Central and Eastern European countries display significant economic, social, and institutional diversity. This raises important questions: Do households across the region differ in their levels of financial fragility? Which socio-demographic groups are most vulnerable? What factors shape household resilience to economic shocks?

Combining conceptual discussion with comparative empirical analysis, the book examines the determinants and dynamics of household financial fragility across the region. It explores changes in household financial conditions - including consumption patterns, debt dynamics, savings behaviour, and subjective financial well-being - and identifies cross-country differences in vulnerability using comparative and cluster-based approaches. The analysis also discusses how external shocks, including the global financial crisis of 2008 and the COVID-19 pandemic, have shaped household financial stability. By linking structural transformation, institutional context, and household-level outcomes, the book fills an important gap in the literature and offers new insights into the challenges of strengthening household resilience in the face of economic shocks.

This book will be of interest to researchers, policymakers, and students in economics, finance, consumer economics, and European studies who seek a deeper understanding of household financial fragility in Central and Eastern Europe.

Public finance is often considered a discipline where numbers, efficiency, and productivity talk. And while gender budgeting, a field of public financial management (PFM), has gained increasing attention in recent years, the personal stories of the women driving this work have remained largely invisible. This is the first book to share unprecedented insider narratives from the women shaping public finance and public policy.

It brings together the stories and conversations of 22 professional women from around the globe who are all working in the fields of PFM and gender budgeting, a space largely dominated by men. These authentic first-person accounts provide rare insights into both the barriers and breakthroughs experienced by women in a field traditionally dominated by technical discourse and masculine perspectives. It demonstrates how women's presence at decision-making tables directly opens the discussions on inclusive, sustainable, and effective public finance outcomes. It provides:

  • Authentic insights into gender representation in PFM and how it can be advanced within the structures of public finance-from ministries of finance to donor agencies and civil society.
  • Encouragement and strategic guidance in navigating leadership, reform fatigue, and institutional resistance, particularly women and underrepresented groups.
  • A storytelling approach, helping readers to relate to this largely technical area.
  • Concrete examples of successful reform and personal stories of resilience, valuable for professionals creating capacity-building programs, applying change management, or shaping institutional culture.

This important book is for public finance professionals, civil servants, economists, gender policy advisors, donor agency staff, civil society organizations, and graduate students in gender studies, public policy, governance, and development programs, providing both inspiration and practical pathways for creating more equitable financial systems worldwide.

Centered on Algeria, Morocco, and Tunisia, this book interrogates the complex entanglements between extractivism, state power, class formation, and geopolitical reorientation in North Africa. While the global energy transition promises economic diversification and sustainable development, the international contributors to this volume show how "green extractivism" often reproduces older structures of dependency and inequality, and therefore authoritarianism consolidates.

Rather than fostering transformation, rent economies adapt, stabilize, and reconfigure themselves through new sources of rent and new modes of social control. The book makes three core contributions. First, it offers a historically grounded and theoretically informed understanding of rent economies in the Maghreb, tracing how colonial legacies of resource extraction evolved into postcolonial patterns of rentier governance. Second, it introduces a class-analytical perspective to debates on extractivism, arguing that rent not only finances authoritarian regimes, but also shapes dynamic social coalitions, "state classes," and cycles of contention and co-optation. Third, the book develops a comparative approach to the political economy of green transformation, focusing on the interplay between domestic rent regimes and external pressures from global markets, international donors, and climate politics. By anchoring each case study in concrete struggles, everyday experiences, and contested claims to resources, the book reveals how global transformations are mediated, resisted, and reappropriated from the following.

The book will be vital reading for those interested in political economy, development studies, and Middle East and North Africa (MENA) studies. It will particularly appeal to scholars working on extractivism, rentier states, authoritarianism, postcolonial development, and the political sociology of class and class struggle.

Bridging academic theories and practical insights, the authors analyse how and to what extent policies, firms and markets influence economic activities across various countries and industries.

Chapters present an updated perspective on industrial economics worldwide, shaped by technological change, geopolitical tensions and sustainability imperatives. Contributors highlight the growing importance of ecosystems and collaborative frameworks in driving innovation and competitiveness, assessing international and cross industry case studies that demonstrate diverse policy approaches and institutional conditions. Evaluating the renewed role of industrial policy alongside technological and geopolitical pressures, authors illustrate how these factors shape structural change, modern state interventions and long-term economic development goals. Examining the interplay between economic analysis and policy instruments, this book is a valuable resource for navigating the current and future landscape of industrial economics, emphasising the need for renewed approaches towards a 'just' industrial policy.

A Modern Guide to Industrial Economics will benefit scholars and students of economics, innovation and technology, public policy and international political economy. It is prime reading for policymakers and practitioners seeking a deeper understanding of the contemporary factors influencing industry dynamics and long term development.

The Moral Economy of Plant-Based Futures explores the complex interplay between plant-based social movements and the evolving global economy, offering a timely analysis of how these movements respond to and shape calls for reduced meat and dairy production.

While meat and dairy production and consumption are increasingly being held responsible for climate change and general environmental destruction, questions of how social movements respond to and are affected by global calls for a reduction of meat and dairy products remain underexplored in relation to markets. Drawing on extensive fieldwork in Telangana, India, and California, USA, the author adopts a multi-sited, sociomaterial approach to investigate how moral issues intersect with economic arrangements, revealing how movements influence markets and vice versa. It establishes an empirically based, interdisciplinary research agenda for exploring how the plant-based moral economy is understood, practised and contested at different social levels across both the Global North and South, and advances a broader theorization of the moral economy of plant-based futures.

An examination of the interaction of moral issues with economic arrangements, which combines a social movement's perspective with a moral-economy approach, this book offers a compelling lens for exploring how movements make markets. It will therefore appeal to scholars and students of sociology, anthropology, geography, development, movements and globalization with interests in food, the environment and the moral economy.

This comprehensive book explores project managers in publicly funded projects, offers a theoretical model to define and evaluate their role, and provides guidelines for future study. Morgan Boyce and Albert Link present data from across the US, arguing that the goal of project managers is to anticipate and alleviate unanticipated challenges.

Analyzing projects funded by the Small Business Innovation Research program at the US Department of Defense and National Institutes of Health, the authors describe the impact of project managers on entrepreneurial firms' research projects. They argue that these impacts are generally positive, and are felt in terms of commercialization, patenting and publishing, but also in related technical areas and through identifying potential markets for developing technologies. The book concludes with policy recommendations for improving the role of project managers, especially in the area of network development.

Public Sector Support of Scientific Inquiry is an essential resource for scholars and students in economics, business management and innovation policy makers. Public sector project managers as well as their funding supervisors will also benefit from its actionable recommendations.

Authors adopt an innovative understanding of monetary policy interventions, analysing inflation targeting strategies and the roots of income and wealth inequalities. Evaluating the tension between central banks' independence from political pressure and dependence on the views of financial markets, the book highlights the need for institutions and policies that benefit society as a whole. Ultimately, contributors argue that the purpose of monetary policy is to contribute to the betterment of communities or society, rather than markets or individuals.

Rigorous and insightful, this book is a crucial resource for students and scholars of economics and finance and also politics and public policy. It is prime reading for central bankers and politicians seeking a deeper understanding of the common good and how monetary policy impacts everyone in society.

This book explores Asia's remarkable economic transformation by examining four key nations-Japan, Korea, China and India. It presents how these countries sustained high economic growth, leading to prosperity.

This book analyses the four economies through the four pillars: (a) free and open markets, (b) accountable government and effective policies, (c) education and human capital development and (d) saving and investment, leading to capital accumulation. The analysis reveals that the experiences of the four countries are highly divergent. Against common knowledge that the Asian miracle was based on export-driven, government-led and infrastructure investment strategy, these countries achieved high economic growth by building the four pillars of their own which reflected their history, culture and initial economic situation. Noting that the present global economic environment makes a copy-and-paste tactic impossible for developing economies to follow, this book offers broader insights on institutional reform and the timely exploitation of critical opportunities, which will be of interest to other developing nations.

Written by an experienced economist and policymaker, this concise book will appeal to students and researchers of development economics, political economy and Asian studies. It will also appeal to general readers interested in learning more about global economics and history.

This visionary book provides a philosophical framework for pluralistic economics, prioritising workplace health and social sustainability over profits. Ulf Johanson and Emmanuel Aboagye demonstrate that narrow economic gazes have consistently shaped how value is calculated, frequently obscuring profound moral consequences.

Johanson and Aboagye propose that economics too often focuses on tools for calculation and accounting, leading to excessive consumption and a negative impact on occupational health and safety. Drawing on examples from diverse work environments, they argue that constant reflection on ethical principles and societal norms must be present when economic decisions are made. Chapters advocate for a new democratic economic model which aims to build a world where the economy serves humanity, enabling people to live with less fear and uncertainty.

Pluralistic Economics is a prescient resource for scholars and students of business and management, finance and economics. Governance policymakers and business managers will also benefit from its human-focused insights and practical suggestions for improved workplace dynamics.

Elgar Research Agendas outline the future of research in each area. Leading scholars are given the space to explore their subject in provocative ways and map out the potential directions of travel. They are relevant but also visionary.

This Research Agenda assesses why outcomes of innovation often disproportionately damage human wellbeing in periphery countries compared to highly industrialized ones. It questions why this pattern is so persistent, and why innovation and development appear to remain mutually exclusive.

International experts treat innovation as a multidimensional process, whereby actors' agency, dignity and imagination heavily influence developmental outcomes. Chapters question predominant Western approaches to development, examining both its characterization and means. Contributors provide a contextualized geographical analysis to emphasize the interconnected nature of innovation policy and evaluate the role of institutions, including states, universities, organized citizenry and sectoral policies. The book addresses how rising inequality and authoritarianism impact global innovation, advocating for transformative change amid an increasingly turbulent environment of unsustainable practices.

This timely Research Agenda is a key resource for scholars and students of economics, development studies, and innovation and technology. Sectoral policy advisors and sustainable development professionals will similarly benefit from its comprehensive approach and actionable recommendations.

People often 'miswant.' They buy goods that do not make them happy and refuse to buy goods that would make their lives better. In The Price of Happiness, Cass R. Sunstein focuses on people's 'willingness to pay,' which is the foundation for free markets. He argues that willingness to pay deserves respect, and high honors in the annals of history, when buyers know what they are getting. It's when buyers lack information, or suffer from behavioral biases, that they might miswant. Special conundrums also arise when we try to monetize goods we don't normally consider in monetary terms, like pristine areas, human dignity, and social media. Exploring behavioral biases and their effect on human welfare, Sunstein shows how behavioral economics can be used to increase human happiness.

This book explores the interconnected challenges of economic development, social progress, and environmental protection in India's mountainous regions. While these regions have recorded steady growth, rising per capita incomes, and improvements in education, their economies continue to face deep structural constraints, including persistent inequalities, limited employment generation, distress-driven migration, gaps in access to healthcare, and growing ecological stress. Using a mountain development framework that integrates socio-economic advancement with environmental sustainability, the book critically explores the tensions between growth and long-term sustainable development. A distinctive strength of the volume is its comprehensive coverage of all Indian Himalayan states, offering an integrated perspective not previously attempted in a single study. It will serve as a valuable resource for students, researchers, and practitioners engaged in sustainable development, economics, disaster management, education, minority studies, and South Asian studies. This is a must-read for anyone seeking to understand mountain economies, and its insights are equally relevant for similar mountainous regions across the world.

This comprehensive Elgar Companion examines the conceptual and empirical relationship between democracy and development, analysing different political regimes adopted by sub-Saharan African countries in the post-independence period. Leading experts survey their governance and development through both macro and micro lenses, drawing on specific case studies and broader, continent-wide analysis.

Interdisciplinary in scope, the book also explores various issues such as party institutionalization and ideology, women's political leadership and participation, military coups, foreign assistance and the role of the African Union, all in relation to democracy and development. Reflecting on the diversity of the African experiences, the contributors propose that the utility of democracy lies in the extent to which it can deliver political goods to its citizens, and that achieving this requires a reimagining of the state which reincorporates indigenous governance and institutions. Analysing the implications of democratic backsliding, chapters advocate for a thinking state anchored by developmental elites, the establishment of strong and accountable institutions, and a shared value of development.

The Elgar Companion to Democracy and Development in Africa is a crucial resource for scholars and students of politics and public policy, economics and development studies. Policymakers and civil servants will also benefit from its practical insights and future-oriented perspectives.

The contributions of Amartya Sen and Cambridge Social Ontology are two important streams in the Cambridge tradition of political economy. Despite significant commonalities, the nature and limits of their convergence remain largely unexamined. Ontology, Ethics and Economics provides the first comparative analysis of these two schools of economic thought. It argues that coherence across economic, social, and ethical theorising can only be achieved when grounded on a solid ontological foundation. While Sen's work has reintroduced crucial ethical dimensions to economics, his reluctance to address ontology systematically has generated tensions that account for the wide and often contradictory interpretations and applications of his work. Offering an explicit account of social reality and its moral implications within a distinctive philosophical framework, this book shows how ontological inquiry can restore political economy's emancipatory orientation and its capacity to offer a genuine alternative to contemporary mainstream economics.

How do domestic socioeconomic conflicts and imperial legacies from the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries continue to shape contemporary governance? This book offers a groundbreaking dual perspective on bureaucratic development. It challenges Max Weber's prediction of uniform bureaucratic rationalization by revealing that public administrations exhibit fundamental and lasting differences across advanced capitalist countries. This divergence originates in historical conflicts between social groups, producing outcomes that remain embedded in current institutions across various European countries and the United States. Moreover, using innovative research designs, including assessments of Poland and Romania's historical divisions based on rigorous spatial methods, Jan P. Vogler demonstrates that bureaucracies imposed by empires over a century ago still affect government efficiency, meritocracy, and state-citizen relations today. Beyond in-depth historical analyses, he provides key insights for policymakers: bureaucratic reforms that ignore historical legacies will likely fail, enabling readers to understand why bureaucracies differ so markedly across seemingly similar countries.
